We've gotten a patio with plantings and two shade trees through Rutgers. They are a little more expensive than their competitors which we knew, but we loved the whole experience of the design and thought they were very professional. The reason why I wouldn't recommend this company is the quality of their support is subpar. Many of the plantings died within the first year even though they get watered daily. The trees don't grow, whereas trees we bought from other landscaping companies in the area are already taller than our house. The patio has loose pavers and the low voltage lighting doesn't work everywhere. Some lights work, others don't. When I asked about the lights, they said it's a supplier issue from China, however they've installed other patios in our neighborhood with lights. I guess it's only a supplier issue for warranty issues and not new installs. The issue with the loose pavers however is the reason I'm writing this review. When I called to asked them to come out and take a look, they told me they can't take support calls like this over the phone instead I would need to email them. I don't understand how a company that I paid thousands of dollars to for a patio won't talk to me on the phone. I now have to wait days for a reply via email. Ridiculous Also, they are going to reply to this review asking me to call them and speak to management. That's a waste of time as when I call the person on the phone will say "send us an email". The selection was even better when we visited yesterday - vegetables, peonies, lilacs in bloom. We took home two additional shrubs after further consultation with Nancy who looked at photos of the spots we needed to fill and advised on beautiful options that would work in our conditions. They were able to recommend plants based on my preferences and yard conditions. Rutgers came out to remove my small lawn and add topsoil with a topping of mulch. This was after Dave Smith came out to work with us on what to do with this long, narrow, shady part of our small in-town property. He has a cost effective solution and helped us to plan for the winter with a tentative plan for next spring with this space. The woman talking to us about landscape design for our yard told my husband his name was weird (it's not a traditional American name, if that makes it weird). She was also pretty dismissive of what we wanted and treated us like we were outsiders to the area that didn't understand that seasons change. My husband is from here. We've had multiple great experiences with Rutgers this year. We have a house surrounded by open farmland/grassland and have our share of deer. In addition, the geology is difficult, with shale, clay and standing water in certain places. The employees at the nursery have provided outstanding advice and options. If they didn't have an answer at their fingertips, they always got back to us. We did pick up some Joe Pie weed for our watergarden and thoroughly enjoyed it all summer. During one of their sales, we purchased beautiful grasses and then went back and ordered five Little Moses Burning Bushes in 5 gallon pots. Planting them ourselves went well and they are beautiful. Every visit and phone call to the nursery was positive. Staff was helpful and definitely went the extra mile for us! - We highly recommend this nursery. read more

i had the opportunity to visit the nursery several times this summer. Each time I was immediately greeted and individually helped. My purchases were relatively minimal but the ENTIRE staff was gracious and accommodating. My sister is a regular customer and said this is the customer service she always receives. A neighbor recommended Rutgers Landscaping, and I eventually managed to get one of their guys to come out to discuss our landscaping project, which involved improving drainage, improved plantings, and patio work. He said he'd put together a design plan for us and then we could discuss getting the work done, but 3 months later I had heard nothing. After emailing, texting and calling various people at their office the guy came back to me and said "your project scope isn't a good fit for us right now". I guess that's fine, but why did he make us wait four months before telling us? I don't know. Maybe they're a good company, but they weren't for us. Totally wasted our time. read more

I asked for an estimate as I've been a customer for years, however, since it was outside their service area they refused. I needed the estimate for submission to my insurance company due to truck jumping a curb and damaging a tree. Simple request was refused. I have spent a smal fortune with them, but am now taking my business elsewhere as they couldn't even accomodate a simple request. read more

Rutgers work on landscape installations is good but nothing special, and the hassle of trying to get them to address installation issues is frustrating to say the least. They will say that they want you to be happy and that they stand behind their warranty, but they selectively address issues (either by dismissing concerns or failing to tell the installation team what needs to be done) and when they do address something, they send the same people back who made the mistake in the first place. Even when I escalated to the nursery manager, Jeff, I got nowhere and it caused more problems than it solved. The last insult was that they brought out the Techo-Bloc rep, Ryan, to tell me that there was no problem with their installation despite the pooling water, cracking border, and washed out sand shown in the pictures. You can judge the quality of their work for yourself, but I am staying away from Rutgers and Techo-Bloc for any future projects. Incidentally, we asked for a quote on natural stone during the project and said that we would prefer it to Techo-Bloc and the designer Kyle never gave it to us. He said that when he went to do the quote it was "too expensive" despite never asking me what our budget was and initially telling us it should not be that much more than Techo-Bloc. read more

I had a similar experience to one of the other reviewer's. I was concerned with drainage when installing a patio. I was told everything would be fine and I had nothing but problems. When I called, I was told the drainage issue could be fixed and I would need to pay more. The designer seemed inexperienced and not knowledgeable. I do not recommend them, unless you know exactly what you want and how it should be done. You cannot leave anything up to the company as they are not experts in the field. read more

These are very nice pleople, very helpful. I think that their stock tends to be deep but not all that broad. But if you need a LOT of a plant or a bush, this is the place to go. They keep the plants well watered so you are buying decent material. They offer landscaping design services, just bring in some photos of your property and they can suggest a complete planting design (for a small charge). They also sell some Large plants and trees, much bigger than you will find most places. We purchased several good size trees from them three years ago and all are doing quite well. read more

My company bought 32 trees from this company which they planted and within 2 years three trees died. I called and spoke to the owner and he stated that this was good that only three trees out of 32 died and it is passed the warranty period and I was "s_ _ _ out of luck". I did let it go for a little while and decided to call the "save a tree foundation". They stated that the trees that died because they were installed to deep. I called the owner again and he agreed to come take a look and that he could not believe the Save a Tree people and that he was more knowledgeable. We made an appointment and he did not show up. I called him two weeks later and he said because I live 40 miles away it is policy that he would visit within 3 weeks of the complaint. Bottom line is that I ripped the trees out and replaced them. After purchasing 32 trees and having Rutgers plant these trees you would think that the owner would at least try to accommodate the problem. Buyer Beware. Used their landscape designer and plants to replace damage from superstorm Sandy, also needed advice on drainage. The landscape design is rather plain doesn't look that nice, and the concept didn't really fit our home. The drainage solution made the problem worse. They didn't respond to repeated calls to return to fix problems. The landscape designer seemed inexperienced and was more interested in selling things than making an attractive design that fit into an existing landscape. Would not recommend. Plants are alright quality, if you are do-it-yourself. read more

About 6 years back we had paver steps installed in our new home. Over the past 2-3 years the steps began sagging and separating from the house. We didn't anticipate it would get as bad as it did. So when we finally contacted RL&N, we thought they would say.. sorry, too late, not our problem. But they came out, took a look and said..."yeah, that shouldn't have happened." They re-installed the steps without a charge and couldn't have been nice. THEY STAND BY THEIR WORK!!! read more

We went to Rutgers to get an initial proposal to build a patio for our house, and I have to say that the level of customer service they provided was really outstanding. They were able to work on various layout proposal for our patio, they sent various quotes and 3D layouts for us to get a visual which was very helpful. Rob did a excellent job taking care of our needs, he was patient as our decision process took a couple of more months before the final decision to start with the project. From start to finish, Rob was very courteous and very quick on getting back to us with multiple changes and adjustments to the project. Rutgers supported us on getting the township approvals as well that took some extra time. Once we signed the contract they quickly started the job, executed on the time frame that they had estimated. Their team of people did a great job while working in our house, professional, hard worker . At the end we were very satisfied with the job, they built a beautiful patio, according to the agreed specifications, they even made a few landscape changes we requested after the job was done.
