Good course with solid variety. Best part are the uncrustables at the snack stand. Huge.

My review does not concern the course itself, which is well kept, and which I have been playing for many years. However, I played a few days ago, and my group was harassed for several holes by the rangers, for no good reason. They wanted us to skip a hole, even though there were no golfers waiting on us. They claimed we were playing too slowly, although the group behind us were at least a full hole back. The rangers were rude to us and argumentative, ruining the enjoyment of our round. Then, when they came a hole later, they thanked us for speeding up, and making up the "15 minutes" we were supposedly behind. (We did not change our pace of play at all). I have been playing this course for years, but if this is how they treat paying customers going forward, I won't be back. Be warned! read more

I wont lie, the course itself is nice. But, there are much better places you can go for $70. What turned me away was the customer service. To start the people at the desk were rude and kind of rushed us out the door although we were 10 minutes early for our tee time. The ranger came up to us around hole 7 and told us we were playing "significantly slow" and told us that typically hed ask us to leave but this time hes gonna "let us slide". I understand if we are playing slow but that is no way to address someone about it. That wasnt the first time we were bothered about our pace either. Funny thing is we finished our 18 in 4 hours which is standard. I am a new player so I will admit that I play slower than average but still dont agree with the way we were approached about it and overall left with a terrible taste in my mouth thanks to the staff alone. I played Rutgers on the 14th of July for the first time in about 20 yrs, it is nice to be back playing there. I would of gave you Five stars, but the Fairway markers, that are difficult to see when you are 20 yards form them, so I'm guessing the yardage, I know a lot of courses put up wooden post just off the fairway so you get a good idea of the yardage. I thought long and hard about what to make my 500th review. I wanted it to be a food place, but we haven't gone out to anyplace nice (and new) recently. I've seen others review Yelp, but I don't want to go there right now. Then I thought maybe it doesn't have to be a food joint...I figured I'd review one of the places I've spent a LOT of time at over the years and came up with the Rutgers University Golf Course...http://golfcourse.rutgers.edu/ The Rutgers University Golf Course is one of my favorite courses to play in all of NJ simply because it used to be my home course - and I've played here more than any other golf course, easily 100 rounds. The RU course was where I played my very first round way back in 1991 (shot an honest 123-awful) with my friends' grandfather's clubs-wooden woods with wodden shafts. It's also been rated the #6 College course in the country (http://www.pga.com/golf-courses/quick-nine/quick-nine-americas-best-college-courses) I've had the opportunity to see some amazing changes implemented at this course since that first round including the addition of numerous bunkers, changed or new tee boxes, and even the removal and addition of trees to change the course a bit. For the number of rounds that they put through here each year it remains in amazing shape-throughout the summer. Rutgers has an amazing turf-grass management program through their environmental school so it's a great place to put knowledge to good use. Onto the course...If you're a nervous golfer (especially with a hook) the first three holes won't be good for you as they're along a road-and I've seen people hit cars (in fact, I hit one when I was in college-I used to be a terrible golfer). This course isn't terribly long, but it does have a few long holes and it will challenge you if you aren't able to play the ball to correct positions on the course. The 7th hole is a challenging, long dog-leg over a stream and the12th is just plain long and requires a monster-shot, also over a creek to make it to the green in two. The tenth always kills me as your approach is to a small fast green that is elevated and crowned so it is tough to keep the ball on the green (only hole on this course I haven't birdied). 17 and 18 are nice finishing holes-a long par 3 over a stream and with a pond long right and 18 is just a grip it and rip it to a nice big green. Along one stretch on the front nine you play almost in the shadow of the Rutgers Football Stadium...which is pretty cool too. As with any course, the more you play it the more you learn where you can cut corners or play to spots so you're next shot is lined up-giving you a shot at birdie...and there are plenty of shortcuts on this course. However, some of the tougher holes are the ones where you simply have to keep the ball in the fairway. Pro shop is small and limited, but they have a nice little driving range next to the parking lot, and they have a decent little grille area at the turn where they make excellent hot dogs. Can't tell you about the rest of the food since I always get the hot dogs. No alcohol sold on this course so the best I can say is to sneak a few in your bag...or if you take a cart you can probably hide a small cooler. I still play this course whenever I can. read more

Solid golf course With cart you are looking at approx $75 A bit steep Course is always in excellent condition I just don't find it all that interesting Not much scenery, a few dog legs and that's it I do like the fact that the Rangers keep players moving, you can easily play a 4 hour round. The range is above average and there are putting greens to warm up. read more

This has got to be one of my top two favorite public courses to play! The price is always right and the course is extremely well maintained for a public course. I absolutely love that they force pace-of-play. You know that you are always in for a 4-Hour round. And if you're hungry, I always recommend a hot dog at the turn lol! read more

Great price for students. Less than $15 on weekdays and a great twilight rate on weekends For the average golfer this is a great place to go. It's not too challenging and is an easy walk with rates that are about the same as the average county course. Staff is friendly and quick to get you out on the course. There is a small pro shop with Rutgers apparel and gold equipment. Also to be noted, there is a halfway house built into the clubhouse where you can call in on the 9th hole and ask for hot food to be prepared upon arrival. Greens don't always read true and could use some rolling, but overall definitely worth the money. read more

This is an average golf course for the money .. The layout is kind of boring - course in decent shape. What really turned me off tot his course was the very rude behavior of the ranger. Probably in his late 60s this guy was rude and followed me around the entire first 9 holes .. Turns out he couldn't leave till the last cart was turned in and he badgered me to speed up even though course was empty .. Unacceptable behavior and I won't golf here again. Much better option in area for similar price - management needs to remind this cranky old guy that customer service is key. read more

This course keeps getting expensive every year. They charge $34 for the cart plus $52 for 18 holes. You can pay much less and play on other courses. read more

I came here today for the first time ever. Nicely maintained course. Not too difficult. A few greens I did find challenging. Only negative experience about the course was my friend and i were being constantly warned by the Ranger to pick up play. They paired us with two 73 year olds... who were slowing everything down. My friend and I eventually just played faster than them... and stayed ahead of them. Shockingly... the Ranger never bothered us again! I did have a great time... and definitely will be back for another round. read more

Excellent course!-always in great condition both course and carts( best carts in the state)--staff is nice- lunch area is small but adequate - great driving range with sand,pitching and putting areas-reasonably priced-enjoy!!! read more

I enjoyed going here. The courses were superb and expansive. I love the greens where you can't quite see the flag from the tee - there are more than one here. The greens are maintained well and staff is pleasant. My only gripe is the need to add bathrooms. This is a common problem at golf courses, but it would seem easy enough to fix. read more

Solid course. Seems to have a good "walking" culture - walkers far outnumbered cart riders every time I've played, and there are no restrictions on walking. They are Nazis when it comes to pace of play, which is a GOOD thing. If you are slow or clueless at golf, please go elsewhere. I've never experienced a weekend round there that took more than 4 hours 15 minutes. Has a few boring holes on the front nine, back nine is far more difficult. Course yardage maxes out at around 6,300 yards or so. The tree near the ditch on the right side of #10 needs to go. Fees are fair for NJ. No complaints about the conditions. They have one of the nicest port-o-johns I've ever experienced on a golf course. It has a sink with running water! Though unless you are near this john, the one right next to it, or the clubhouse, you are sh*t out of luck as these appear to be the only bathrooms on the course. Tough to near impossible get a morning weekend tee time as an "outsider" but that just speaks to the popularity of the course. read more

Golf range was all we tried, but prices were good for various size buckets of balls. The range itself is very wide open with a large number of little astroturf tee areas. Greens arranged throughout range well marked as to distance. Nicely maintained. Bring a hat :) read more
