I thought long and hard about what to make my 500th review. I wanted it to be a food place, but we haven't gone out to anyplace nice (and new) recently. I've seen others review Yelp, but I don't want to go there right now. Then I thought maybe it doesn't have to be a food joint...I figured I'd review one of the places I've spent a LOT of time at over the years and came up with the Rutgers University Golf Course...http://golfcourse.rutgers.edu/ The Rutgers University Golf Course is one of my favorite courses to play in all of NJ simply because it used to be my home course - and I've played here more than any other golf course, easily 100 rounds. The RU course was where I played my very first round way back in 1991 (shot an honest 123-awful) with my friends' grandfather's clubs-wooden woods with wodden shafts. It's also been rated the #6 College course in the country (http://www.pga.com/golf-courses/quick-nine/quick-nine-americas-best-college-courses) I've had the opportunity to see some amazing changes implemented at this course since that first round including the addition of numerous bunkers, changed or new tee boxes, and even the removal and addition of trees to change the course a bit. For the number of rounds that they put through here each year it remains in amazing shape-throughout the summer. Rutgers has an amazing turf-grass management program through their environmental school so it's a great place to put knowledge to good use. Onto the course...If you're a nervous golfer (especially with a hook) the first three holes won't be good for you as they're along a road-and I've seen people hit cars (in fact, I hit one when I was in college-I used to be a terrible golfer). This course isn't terribly long, but it does have a few long holes and it will challenge you if you aren't able to play the ball to correct positions on the course. The 7th hole is a challenging, long dog-leg over a stream and the12th is just plain long and requires a monster-shot, also over a creek to make it to the green in two. The tenth always kills me as your approach is to a small fast green that is elevated and crowned so it is tough to keep the ball on the green (only hole on this course I haven't birdied). 17 and 18 are nice finishing holes-a long par 3 over a stream and with a pond long right and 18 is just a grip it and rip it to a nice big green. Along one stretch on the front nine you play almost in the shadow of the Rutgers Football Stadium...which is pretty cool too. As with any course, the more you play it the more you learn where you can cut corners or play to spots so you're next shot is lined up-giving you a shot at birdie...and there are plenty of shortcuts on this course. However, some of the tougher holes are the ones where you simply have to keep the ball in the fairway. Pro shop is small and limited, but they have a nice little driving range next to the parking lot, and they have a decent little grille area at the turn where they make excellent hot dogs. Can't tell you about the rest of the food since I always get the hot dogs. No alcohol sold on this course so the best I can say is to sneak a few in your bag...or if you take a cart you can probably hide a small cooler. I still play this course whenever I can.

Good course with solid variety. Best part are the uncrustables at the snack stand. Huge.

Also to be noted, there is a halfway house built into the clubhouse where you can call in on the 9th hole and ask for hot food to be prepared upon arrival.

Positives: Well-kept for a local course. The greens rolled true, and the course was in good shape…read more Negatives: Horrible service. The pro shop looked at me like I had three heads when I said I didn't have the county course membership (there's 5 courses in the county). It felt as though they were blatantly accusing me of being stupid. I told them I am literally not from here and while I'm visiting, I wanted to play a round. Then I told them I would like a golf cart and again they made a snide comment about how I was "doing the county a favor" because I didn't get the discount that members get. I was pretty dumbfounded. But I just wanted to enjoy a nice day on the course, and I did end up doing that. One more thing: the course is not beginner friendly. I like a challenge but it was narrow with trees everywhere and there were so many uphill, blind shots that it started to get frustrating. On the second hole there was a tower with stairs to climb up so your playing partners could watch your ball for you. A nice touch, but that goes to show how blind some of these shots were. Whatever! I would still recommend the course itself because I had fun. Just know what you're getting into.

The first few times I played here I was still a pretty bad golfer-and this isn't the best course or a bad golfer. The course is basically cut out of the forest so there are trees everywhere. You'd think TNT would make ma the this course, right?? Wrong, this is one of the courses that taught me to a) play out of the trees accurately, and b) play 'smart' golf. If you can keep the ball in the short grass you can have a great round here as there really aren't any hard holes on the course. A couple of blind tee shots, a couple long dog legs, and some elevation changes, but overall this isn't a tough course for a decent golfer. The finishig holes are fun, but pretty easy as long as the water doesn't bother you. The first time I played here I was pretty clueless and couldn't hit my fairway woods. 18 lines up towards the clubhouse and I pulled out my 3 wood for my second shot (or third more likely) except I actually hit it square...and blasted the clubhouse. I was horrified, but my friends thought it was hilarious. I haven't been back here in a few years...maybe it's time to go back to my roots when I pull the clubs out this year?

I was so surprised that the place was pretty busy on a Saturday at 930am. The demographic was quite diverse from families with kids to people with friends and to couples. Lots of people brought their own clubs too. (Don't worry, they provide clubs and label them with large beginner ones too). The bays were comfortable. They had heating when it was about 50 and drizzling outside and I felt comfortable and warm. The games were easy to set up. I feel like I didn't fully grasp how to play and was just swinging the ball out there for the fun of it (still somehow ranked 2nd place among my friends :P) Our attendant was super helpful and checked in on us frequently to make sure we had everything we needed. The menu wasn't as expensive as I had imagined which is a plus too. The food did take a little bit of time to come out. Wish they provided water for the bays and napkins. I appreciated my time and can see the appeal. I'm glad there's one opening closer to me so hopefully I can go again and get a better grasp on the game!
