Pleaded with Ms. Police Officer til I turned green, said I needed to pick up my dog's Rx- before CVS Pharmacy closed. She had no time for sad stories. After that, put ticket in my bag and off I went to the pharmacy. Could've/Should've done a number of things including pay it off and move it along. But I was determined to fight the damn ticket in court. H...o...w...e...v...e...r- few things took a left turn from my part after that: lost my summons, no time to go to court, back-to-back work schedules, delayed my hearing, etcera. But I also didn't want it to affect my driving record or result in a suspended license. In any case, I missed the deadline badly, it cost me and had to take action fast. Front desk officer, directed me to the Traffic Clerk's window and I paid ticket+fees. The clerk was real cordial and didn't feel I was being brushed off- in reality, the sister helped me in every way. In the end, I fessed up and gotta be a bit more light-footed on the gas. Paying that ticket, hurt my pocketbook but listen- I admitted my guilt. And coming here was a breeze.

Parking is available right next door, and not too expensive -then free directly across the street after your are picked. Would be nice if they had more than one parking machine in the courthouse as time may need to extended depending on where you fall in the jury pool. The courts operate on a union schedule, so prompt start at 10:00am, lunch from 12:30 to 2:00 pm, then done promptly at 4:30 each day. Only pick is the truly ho-hum coffee shop in the building, although there is a terrific deli/restaurant around the corner. The civil case was short - only three days, and so I am free for the next 6 years after serving. Wheee!

Today was my day at the Bergen County Courthouse located in Hackensack, where I was able to see its interior beauty. Designed by architect James Reilly Gordon ca. 1911, this courthouse is a fine example of the Beaux Arts style, reflecting monuments of classical Rome and the Italian Renaissance. The building is capped by a copper-coated dome with a cupola and surmounted by a statue. The interior dome of the rotunda area of the courthouse is modeled after the Pantheon in Rome and topped with Tiffany-stained glass. Since this building is rich with history, if you get a chance to be inside, go to the 2nd floor and follow the sign to the rotunda.

Recently served jury duty here. They do make it as painless as possible providing free Wi-Fi and…read morecharging stations with lightning and USB-C charging ports. If jurors forgot their juror summons they were able to have it reprinted on site. There is a large jury holding room and a jury lounge off to the side. The lounge was less crowded so I waited there most of the time. The speaker system was set up so you could hear the announcements from either space. Jurors were repeatedly thanked by the people making the announcements and the informational videos for taking time out of their busy schedule to serve. It was nice to feel appreciated. About 30 minutes after arrival time juror ballots and information cards were collected. If your ballot was pulled your name would be announced and you would report to a juror room. There they take attendance and jurors would fill out questionnaires if required by the judge. Then the jurors would be escorted to the courtroom where the juror selection process would take place. Then selection starts with jurors who wish to be excused for scheduling issues such as travel during the trial period or other reasons for not being able to serve. After that 14 jurors (12 main and 2 alternate) are chosen and questioned by the attorneys. Then the jurors are chosen from the 14. If necessary the process repeats with another round. Jurors not chosen needed to report back to the holding area. Back at the holding area jurors would wait until released. Jurors were released for lunch from 12:30pm to 2:00pm. The day ends at 5pm unless released earlier. Before being released jurors received a letter as a proof of service. The juror selection process seemed long and tedious. Not sure if it can be streamlined somehow. Upon returning to the holding area after lunch it was not clear that the jury pool was already released (probably before lunch when I was away during juror selection). I ended up waiting around for 45 minutes before finding someone to ask and getting my proof of service. Posting signs in the juror holding area or text/email notifications would solve this. Interestingly there was a mobile mammography unit parked outside of the building. You could get a mammogram if you were insured, had a referral from your doctor and didn't have a mammogram in the last year. It was a good way to multitask when waiting around in the holding area if it was a need. As for food and snacks there was a cafe downstairs that I didn't visit. There were signs to get a free coffee by signing up at a link revealed with a QR code.

After years of litigation, multiple judge changes, and repeated exposure to ongoing abuse dynamics, I have experienced a level of instability and lack of accountability that no parent should ever have to endure. Instead of creating safety and structure, this court process has often felt enabling and retraumatizing. I came to the court seeking protection and support, but the lack of enforcement and meaningful intervention has allowed harmful dynamics to continue. It has been emotionally exhausting, financially draining, and deeply discouraging. Families deserve a court system that is competent, consistent, and focused on protecting families--not prolonging harm.
