Everyone wants what is best for their baby and nursing is something that most parents desire for health and emotional bonding reasons. Sadly, it doesn't always come naturally and learning how to do it can cause a lot of feelings of inadequacy and frustration for a first time mom. After being removed to the hospital from our birthing center and a 37 hour labor, I was exhausted and shaken up to say the least. My experience with the lactation consultant at Hoag did not make this any better, as she told me my baby didn't latch and that I would likely need to use formula. This both scared me and broke my heart. So, my husband started seeking out a lactation consultant on Google and fate led us to Reka - thank God!!!!! Reka was at our home the same day. When we welcomed her in, I felt completely comfortable with her. She was so professional and warm and seemed to be confident that we would be able to get on track with nursing. She was right! Unfortunately, my milk didn't come in fast enough to keep my baby satisfied right away and we had some rough days and nights for the first three days. Reka was by our side every singe step of the way making sure that my baby was fine and that we were doing everything we could to ensure that my milk would come in shortly. Reka went above and beyond for us. When my pump seemed to be spilling milk from the bottom of the flange, Reka sought out new flanges and even borrowed a pump from her friends collection to see if that would help. She got us a bag of lactation tea from an herbalist friend of hers and dropped these things off to our home! She was available by text and was always super responsive when we ran into nursing issues. On day 4, my milk came in. Because Reka had already showed me and my baby how to master positioning and latch, my baby nursed like a pro right away! It honestly felt like we had never had a problem with nursing at all. If you are having any nursing issues at all, Reka is the answer!!! I highly recommend her. Very disappointed in this experience. This happened about a year ago and I still feel a bit upset about it. It was a total waste of time. First appointment was good. 2nd was canceled day of. She was not able to reschedule for another 2 weeks. Gave me a specific day that I was not available. I threw out. Couple of dates. No answer. I reach out again a week later , no answer. I reach out again and finally get a new appointment. 2nd appointment come around and it's ok. 3rd appointment comes around and she cancels on me again and informs me she can no longer help me because of personal problem. Tells me she made notes and I am welcome to find another lactation consultant in their network. I only get 3 free consultations through my insurance and she wasted 2 of them. I needed help because my son was not gaining weight. Meanwhile she is giving me the runaround and wasting valuable time while I as a new mom am feeling anxious because I don't know what I am doing wrong. I had the hardest time breast-feeding before seeing Reka. My baby was diagnosed with both lip tongue and cheek ties. Every time she fed I was in excruciating pain and had to constantly feed due to her ties in order for her to get a good amount. I was feeding about 20 times per day. As soon as Reka came over, with in minutes she improved her latch and for the first time breast-feeding was not painful!! I saw Reka during last summer, when my preemie came home from his two week stay. I was struggling with breastfeeding because as with my firstborn, i have a very low supply and was also worried about a tongue or lip tie. She professional and personable. I felt safe receiving help from her--like she understood and listened. I had seen two prior LC via my insurance who pretty much gave me the company line and didn't really listen. Must of the reviews here sounds like she's a wonderful lactation consultant and she probably is, what I do know is I send her a desperate daily tex message asking desperately for her help since I am struggling with feeding my preemie baby. I can see she read my messages but not one call from her or reply to my message. If you're too busy is totally understandable but at least reply saying you have no time to schedule a consultation a little bit of empathy and professionalism wouldn't be a bad thing at all. read more

I had contacted Réka for some breastfeeding help. My son was a couple weeks old and I wanted help with breastfeeding and pumping. She was really helpful with the advise she had given me. However she had told me that I can text her with questions whenever and she will be able to answer. I've texted her about 4x since she visited me and all she does is reads my messages and doesn't answer. This is my first time breastfeeding my son and I'm trying everything in my power to make it work with pumping and formula for supplementing til I build more more supply. He's now a month old and I'm still trying to gain my supply with pumping 8x a day and nursing him as often as he will take it. There are sometimes when I just feel like I'm not doing it correctly and I contact her for advise and she ignores me. read more

I was about to give up breastfeeding my 3 week old. I thought I had thrush or he had a tongue tie because it hurt soooo bad. I was devastated because I had wanted to breastfeed for at least a year and I loved the bonding. A friend recommended I call Reka because she was able to help her with her baby. She came the next morning with all of her supplies. I literally cried when she asked me how we were doing and she hugged me and told me it would be ok. She assessed my babies mouth and told me it was not tongue tie or thrush (assessed my nipples too) but gave me a treatment option in case I ever get the real thing. She observed me breastfeeding and corrected his latch and taught me how to nurse in better positions so that I wasn't constantly tired and had back pain and felt like I had carpal tunnel and even taught me different positions so that I could rest. She weighed my baby before and after and discovered that milk production was also not an issue! Even taught me paced bottle feeding so that the baby could do both if I needed help or when I went back to work. As an added bonus she helped me with tips to calm my fussy baby! She is great. A week later I am in no pain and could do this for years. (I hope) baby and mama are happy! I highly recommend you see Reka if you need any help! Worth every penny. read more

If you're looking for a LC, go with this woman! I saw 4 LCs (two in the hospital and two afterwords) and found all of them to be less than helpful. I was about to give up on b'feeidng but decided to give it just one more shot with an LC and decided to go with Rèka since a friend recommended her. She was awesome. My little guy and I had not been able to make bf'ing work and by the time I saw Rèka he was six weeks old and would scream at me whenever I tried nursing him. It was emotionally exhausting for me and for him. By that point I had read a bunch and tried a number of different thing to make bf'ing work, none of which were successful. Rèka was super patient, non-judgemental (as all LC should be but I found are not!) and continually brainstormed ideas as to what the issue might be and strategies to help. She checked his latch (no one had actually checked up to this point) and introduced me to "supplemental nursing system". She had us try it and it worked :) In all honesty I think my own anxiety and frustration had TONS to do with my baby's trouble at the breast. I think Rèka's calm and understanding approach really helped me chill out. Attempting to nurse in a calm mood is (I think) ultimately what got my baby to latch and I couldn't have done it without her help read more

She arrived on time and is very responsive and considerate to your situation and made herself available to help as soon as possible. I was concerned about latching and not producing enough milk and turns out I had a great supply! She supported me with affirmations and lots of helpful information. She even brought over the breast friend and scale and helped us learn how to use our Moby wrap! She is very knowledgeable and I felt awesome when she left! I now feel confident in breast feeding my newborn son and scheduled a 2 week follow up with Reka to follow up with how we are doing on her tips on pumping and latching. Reka SAVED ME!!!!!! Yesterday morning was one of the worst mornings I've had in a long time. My beautiful baby was 4 days old and I was an emotional wreck dealing with severely engorged breasts which was making it impossible for me to get my baby to latch on. Not only was I completely distraught over my baby getting enough to eat but I was in extreme pain due to the engorgement. I knew I needed help immediately. I had tried googling solutions but as a first time Mom I was just completely overwhelmed and SCARED. I found Reka via Yelp. I was grateful to see her wknd availability and called right away. Reka picked up immediately and listened to me crying on the other end of the line about what was going on and made an appt to come to my house in an hour! Réka was an immense help with breastfeeding challenges that we had. Because the hospital insisted that I breastfeed my newborn every 2-3 hours (I had no milk and almost no colostrum), I had a cracked nipple and a hungry baby by the time I was discharged. Réka saw me that same day. She helped me to piece together a plan that would feed my baby, help my milk supply to come in, and allow my nipple to heal. She taught me different nursing positions and had a few gadgets with her that made the process way easier (hello nipple shield!). Réka was extremely knowledgeable and fact-based (I get most of my pregnancy/medical info from medical journals via PubMed), while being very caring and supportive. Yes, breastfeeding involves many gray areas and opinions, but Réka was never doctrinaire. She knows it's a balancing act! My baby and I are now doing great with breastfeeding. My son was born early at 4 lbs 8oz with hypoglycemia, and as a result he struggled with latching. I spent countless hours with lactation consultants to no avail. Reka was recommended to us by our midwife. As first time parents we had many questions and concerns both related to breast feeding and not. Reka had offered to visit us on the same day I originally contacted her but since our situation wasn't dire, she came the next morning. Reka spent 2 1/2 hours with us showing me how to feed laying down, how to hand express milk, how to use my pump and how to get our daughter off of using a nipple guard. Before her visit I was using the guard on both nipples and I was able to immediately stop following her visit. She answered many questions about diet, burping, feeding schedule, safe sleeping, etc. At the end of the visit she gave us a comprehensive page of notes so we could look back if we forgot anything we learned. Although she could have easily scheduled a follow up visit with us, she told us we likely didn't need one. My husband, who was skeptical how someone could spend 2+ hours talking about breast-feeding ended up very engaged and asked many questions. He was very happy in the time we spent with Reka.
