Basing this on two things... Yesterday I needed some minor help with a camera I just bought. He took care of it at no charge. I had bought some black and white film many years ago but that was about it, everything digital since 2008. I doubt he recognized me except maybe from seeing me read on a table out on the plaza outside. Six years ago or so, a friend had dozens of her own 3-D metal sculptures, basically all black. Large and highly 3 dimensional. She asked if I could photograph them for her and I said no, since one window captured all the blue sky light and the other one faced the sun so light balance was impossible. I tried and showed her that I couldn't do what she needed. She called S L and the owner came over with lights and reflectors and took pictures of all the sculptures. You could see the depth of shadows very clearly in every shot with no color tone at all. She was very happy with the work. read more

I went there to print a headshot and things went real south real fast. The person working there was very rude and dismissive. I get it, I am not the professional (it's not my job, right?) and didn't know what resulotion pics had to be in order to be printed. I sent him what I had, which had worked in other places by the way, but it wasn't good enough resolution for them, which I get. What I DON'T get it being left there for 30 minutes trying to figure out what is the minimum for the photo to be ok, which this person NEVER ASSISTED ME WITH and didn't help me at all with. When I finally said that I was surprised because other places were fine, he literally WAVED ME OFF THE STORE. I left the following Google review and their reply was SLANDERING ME. I will attach here a screenshot of my review and of their reply. I am all for supporting small businesses but for $25 for one print you may want to at least NOT BEING SLANDERED. read more

I wanted DVD's of my daughter's wedding and was surprised to hear from the videographer that they are no longer offered as a matter of course to customers. We enjoy DVD's at home and just find it simpler to pop in a disc. We also know many elderly customers who enjoy themselves So when I found S&L Photos and explained the situation and brought a USB with me, Brian was able to download the video and burn some DVD's for me. The price was reasonable and I am happy, as are my relatives, including the bride and groom. read more

The staff here is incredibly rude and unprofessional. I come to this store (which is very limited and overpriced) simply for convenience as it is two blocks from my work. I come to print photos and have them placed in frames. The first time I came the staff refused to print photos and place them in a frame unless I purchased the frame at the store. I recognize that this is a small business in Manhattan and so to stay in business they need to cost their services at a rate to allow them to survive. So, I purchased a frame (despite the cost) for the convenience of getting this project done and they did a good job. When I returned for a similar project today, they rudely told me that (1) none of my photos were correct dimension and had been cropped (which was not true) and (2) that they would charge me $5-10 to simply print an individual 4x6 photo. I needed this to print for my child's preschool and so opted to move ahead despite the insane cost and was then told that since I did not tip them on a prior visit that they were upset with me. I literally could not believe what I was hearing and the discussion turned into a shouting match. By the way, this all happened in front of other customers. I have never experienced this degree of unprofessionalism and hostility in a business in my life. I have no idea why this happened when I spent over $200 on prior visits to this business for work that could have been done for half the cost elsewhere. Avoid this business at all costs. They do not deserve the minimal business that they currently have. read more

They took terrible pictures, there is something wrong with the lighting in the studio and they are rude about it

Way too expensive for low quality prints. If you try to print one photo, see how it looks, and then print a second photo, they tell you that it's something like $4 for the first photo and $1 for every photo after, but if you try to print one photo and then another separately right after, it'll be $4 each photo ($8). I had two photos printed there recently. They came out dull and washed out even though that's not what they looked like on the computer. I figured they were bad photos and I did a bad job editing them. I decided to try a different photo place. The photos came out looking just like they looked on the computer. You can see the difference in the pictures I've attached where S L Express' photo is on the right and a different photo place on the left. read more

I've quite literally never had my disposable photos come out worse. Even the CVS unprofessionals who cut my photos crookedly did a better job than this. The guy / owner was very nice and friendly in the store. He was also prompt in turnaround time. However, more than half of my photos came out unusable, blurry, and distorted in brightness and hue. I doubt it's my skills or lack thereof, because I consistently use disposable cameras and their film in the same way. They absolutely ruined the coloring and resolution of my photos then blamed it on me. Absolute garbage, the owner is a scam artist, ruined my film, refused a refund after giving me pictures that looked like they were made on windows 7. I mean look at the picture attached... huh??? Why does it look like it got screenshotted down a rabbit hole and ended up in my lap like this. This place is truly amazing! I dropped off a disposable camera yesterday and received the Dropbox link a few hours later. The quality of the photos was incredible! Everything was crystal clear, even photos that I had taken in low light. I'd gotten my previous camera roll developed at CVS - same price as S L but took 2 weeks and the quality was mediocre. I saw the bad reviews before coming but I thought to myself it is just an id photo how can it go bad? They take the picture with a camera I had 15 years ago. It's red under my eyes and my face is lit up and it's just very very bad colors..... ended up paying 60 dollars for 2 50x50 and 2 50x60mm pictures. Wouldn't come again. read more

I cannot say enough good things about this place. I'm actually just leaving there now... I was so impressed by this man's customer service I literally could not wait to post a review. He spent a good hour with me helping me create a couple pieces for my mother and mother-in-law and was so courteous and professional. It is clear that he's passionate about what he does and is so attentive to detail, from selecting the right color matte to windexing the frames. My pictures and their frames came out so perfect. What a disappointment: this store is conveniently located in my neighborhood of nearly 30 years, is well merchandised and has all the right equipment to take care of most imaging needs. What it lacks is customer savvy and, dare I say, humanity. I called to see if my photos were ready; when I asked if they came out alright I was told "We cannot discuss that on the phone." When I arrived I was handed the photos and I said I just wanted to look at them. The counterman (owner, manager?) said I had to pay before I looked at them. When I asked why, he replied "Because people run away". To preface, I had told the same person when I dropped off the film I understood that nothing may come out properly since it was expired film (and I offered to pay upfront but was declined). The transaction reminded me more of shopping on Rikers Island than Lenox Hill. So much for trying to support local photos shops with dreadful attitudes. read more

This HAS to be the worst shop EVER. Let me give my reasons and bear in mind that I am a VERY patient person and always give someone the benefit of doubt I bought a card reader since I wanted to transfer the newborn baby pictures of my friend asap and send it to her eagerly awaiting family. I am a semi professional photographer taking wedding/event pictures for family and friends. As soon as pugged in the card reader along with my flash card, it was not recognized by my Macbook pro (yes, I read, it is compatible). When I put it back into my camera resigning to the fact that I will have to do the transfer later, the camera indicated that my card is damaged and not readable. We are talking about my very trusted Nikon D300, which I have used all over the world. I immediately went back to the shop, very upset of having not only lost all my pictures but also about having my $80 worth 8GB card ruined. The store manager was very rude refused to help and shrugged his shoulders and told that he was just working there and it is not his problem. Asked me to come the next day and talk to the store owner. He in the meantime, tested his own card and declared that the card reader was indeed defective. The next day, I told the store owner that I understand that he is not directly responsible for the loss of my pictures and the destruction of my Flash card, but damage has been done and I am lost $80 AND precious memory (It might be recovered by software out there and I need to shell out another $40). Since he has insurance, I requested him to at least replace my card and not even with the expensive 8GB but at least 2 or 4 GB which costs $20. The store owner laughed at my face and claimed that I HAD DESTROYED the card reader with my crappy computer. He does not trust me and insulted me for 5 minutes. When I told me that I am very disappointed and I would not do any more business with him, he said, GLADLY, please do not come back and I DO NOT CARE IF YOU TELL YOUR FRIENDS AND THEY ALSO NEED NOT COME BACK. This is THE WORST I HAVE EVER BEEN TREATED in a shop. He was very very very impolite and kept claiming that I destroyed the product and I should be grateful that he might give the money back. He mocked me, made fun of me. I do not think ANY customer should be treated this poorly and it is beyond just being treated badly, it is the fact that he insulted me and accused me. I am giving this place 5 stars ONLY because Steve was SO awesome! I accidentally got wrapped up with the older "gentleman" at first, and the experience was terrible. I could get into details, but I don't care for Yelp slander. Just save yourself the trouble and go to Steve. Steve not only did an amazing job cropping, printing, matting and perfectly framing our engagement photo for our wedding, he also did for us right on schedule which is so important when your wedding is that same week. Really terrible place with bad attitude and service. They don't let you see sample unless you pay in cash, and they don't tell you the first time it prints sample it costs $4 and the next time you start printing they will charge you another $4 starting fee and reminder - they don't tell you upfront - also lying and shouting at potential customers. If you don't want your day ruined don't go there. Terrible clerk there!!!! I don't have cash with me so I said if I see the quality of the first sample I can continue to pay. The person says he cannot let me see picture until I pay him in cash - reasoning what if I don't pay, but I don't even need the sample picture. I need 30 more. And he doesn't tell you need $10 min for credit card charge. Words cannot express I upset with the place. What a time loser. read more

I cannot speak highly enough about this place! Steven is an angel and gifted with film. I have gotten dozens of rolls developed with him over the years and they bring me to tears every time I look at them in my email. He can give you meaningful, patient pointers when it comes to settings, film choices, developing, anything you may have questions on. The colors pop and the quality represents, to me at least, a perfect nostalgia summer dream. He always gets them to me within a few hours with a convenient Dropbox link; prices are slightly higher than a CVS but worth every penny. There is a sign inside that will make you smile: "when you buy from a small business, an actual person does a little happy dance inside." By far my favorite small business: I will never go anywhere else! Highly recommend! read more

I signed up on yelp just so that I can vent and warn others about the terrible experience I had at this place. Firstly, their customer service is probably the worst I've come by in NYC. I developed 100 photos for an album I was working on as a gift for my brothers wedding. The quality of the photos was horrible. All the colors were washed out and the paper was so flimsy. When I asked them about it they said its my pictures ( I took the pictures with a brand new SLR and after taking extensive photography courses). I asked for a white border- they can only do it on 4x6 on anything bigger they have to trim. I told them I would trim the edges to my liking and they said they aren't "allowed" to do that. What does that even mean? They charged me $0.79 for 4x6 and $4.99 for 5x7. How is that logical?? They didn't ask me if I wanted Matte or glossy. They just started printing out on glossy. When u asked them for matte they told me it will only be ready in two days because they have to change the paper and it takes the machine half an hour to warm up to the new paper. It was 3:30pm, they closed at 6pm that day. I told them there is ample time- they answered its not worth it for them to start up the machine now for 1 customer. At that point I had already paid (close to $100) since they ask you to pay immediately- otherwise I would have stormed out. When I confronted the guy and said "its not worth it for you to start up the machine when you have enough time for a paying customer?" he replied "we have 98 stores throughout the city." I guess that means that they don't care about their customers- they have enough stores around the city to make a profit with or without you. Did I mention that the salesman was arguing with me while eating macdonalds in front of my face? Basically lazy, unpleasant staff with below average, overpriced products. First of all, I can do the same thing myself or go to a drug store for cheaper, but I just can't believe how rude this man was to me. My husband went to get our wedding pictures developed here after having the same proofs done at Costco. They charged him $75 dollars for about 70 pictures and the quality was terrible! It looked like it was printed from a printer hooked to a computer. Since we had the SAME pictures printed earlier we knew it wasn't the quality of our photos. I went back to try to figure out what went wrong and the owner told me it was my pictures. I explained to him that I have the same pictures printed somewhere else and they came out great and I didn't understand why he printed it on that paper. The owner proceeded to take a glass of water and DUMP IT ON MY WEDDING PICTURE to show me that these are the best pictures because they are waterproof?! It was the most bizarre experience ever. After he continued to argue about the quality of my photos and tell me that they "weren't worth his time" I told him I wasn't happy and asked for a refund and he told me he wouldn't give me one and to "BRING IT ON". Stay away from this place- they are overpriced, rude and can't produce quality product! read more

Needed a picture printed and put in a frame quickly. Dropped in here because i was around the corner. Fantastic service, accommodating and pleasant. They helped me pick out the right frame after I chose one that I thought was fine, but they were right when placed with the photo. PASSPORT PHOTOS- NO WAY I brought my three year old in for a passport photo. Owner was so short and rude. Two tries and told me to go elsewhere. Had no time for me. I would have thought he would be more patient considering he often has his child with him. Also in the world of digital photos and the internet you would think he would want the business of passport photos. Ive given this store a lot of business printing photos for me in the past. The photos I had printed here were completely washed out and pale. I went back with a set of the same photos printed at CVS around the corner to compare and they could not have cared less. "We don't give refunds." I like supporting small business'/franchise but not worth it here. Just go to CVS (2nd ave & 72nd street). Plus, CVS was about 1/3 the price. read more
