They let my family adopt a cat who they claimed was 3 years old. Turns out she was 10 with heart failure? I've heard so many stories about how horrible they treat the cats there but it makes perfect sense now. i will never set foot in this place again. it's shameful. read more

My husband and I are seniors. Util two weeks ago,we had a dream of a dog. We adopted her. She was reported as a lab/pit mix of 3 years old. She was 11 years old when she died. There is a hole in our hearts and in our home, so we went to this Hillside SPCA. We fell in love with a dog they showed us and tried to adopt him. They told us that that was fine, and we were told they would call us the next morning "first thing." We were never contacted again after numerous requests for a returned call left on a tape. We are seniors. They never called our vet or our references. We can only guess why they apparently do not want us, but this is our second heartbreak in the 2 weeks since our dog died. Seniors, make SURE they will ACTUALLY allow you to adopt a dog no matter what they tell you to your face. read more

This review is regarding the cats only; I didn't visit the dog building. I visited the shelter because I saw Hillside was hiring and was thinking about applying. As an animal lover, what I encountered broke my heart. There is no way to describe the overcrowding and neglect occurring there. Upon entering the shelter, I was immediately hit with the pungent stench of urine. (If you haven't visited other shelters, this is preventable with proper cleaning and adequate litter and boxes.) There was urine on the floor, and litter boxes that were only about 1/4 full of litter. In the room were dozens of cats, and all but about 3 of them were free-roaming. Not having everyone caged sounds nice in theory, but you can't let ill cats roam unless you want communicable diseases spreading. And my god, are the cats there sick. I lost count of how many cats are missing eyes! This can be a complication of things like untreated infections...And innumerable cats (probably half) showed symptoms of upper respiratory infections: sneezing, wheezing, congestion, eye discharge. One poor cat had green puss in both eyes, so much that he could barely blink. The image continues to haunt me!! Another little cat had absolutely filthy fur and a tail with practically no fur on it and also had respiratory symptoms. The staff I encountered were kind to me. I'm left wondering if they think they're caring well for those cats or if they know how horrible the conditions are? As an animal lover, I couldn't last more than a couple minutes in that place. The level of neglect was heartbreaking...if these were private owners, I'd be reporting them to animal control, it's that bad. This place is seriously like walking into hell. read more

I fell in love with the photos and description of a random black cat I stumbled upon on pet finder. I applied, not thinking I would actually get approved. But I did! I was in contact with them via email for over a month before I finally was able to pick up my baby. He was sick, and they made sure he was healthy and ready to go, continuing to care for him the whole time. I drove 2 hours during torrential thunderstorms, to this beautifully located animal shelter in the mountains. Signed some paperwork, paid a very cheap adoption fee of $55 (of which they will send you back $25 after you send them proof of neuter). I'd have paid hundreds. The staff clearly took very good care of all the animals there. They even gave us a bag of toys before we hit the road. He is priceless, and the best cat I've ever owned. Absolutely perfect! I was looking to give a dog a home for Christmas just so my other dog can have a buddy to play with. Well I went to Hillside and brought my dog with me and he was getting along with other dogs. I was in search for a male dog for my male dog to be accompanied by. But it turns out, they will not let me adopt a dog simply because my dog (age 8 and a purebred Irish Setter) is not neutered. Even though I was adopting a male dog to accompany my male dog, they would not allow me to adopt because my 8 year old purebred is not neutered. Makes no god damn sense. My friends family got a dog from hillside a while back but they had to unfortunately return the dog because it had attacked the neighbors dog and they couldn't control him anymore. When they went to return the dog, the one lady called his mom a scumbag and a horrible person for returning a shelter dog. WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE read more

Hillside is GREAT! These people have to see dying animals every single day, and yet they still do everything they can to save as many animals as possible. I am such an animal lover, I don't even swat flies! I could never witness a dying animal because I care so much about animals. The people at Hillside sacrifice a lot of emotion to do the tremendous job they do! I adopted a little cat named Kayla 2 years ago, and she is the happiest little thing ever! She only drinks spring water, and gets fed a little too much! I've given her the best home that I can, and I never would have found her if it wasn't for Hillside. I had her checked at the vet (as required) shortly after adoption, and she had no health issues. She is perfect! I've noticed that animals are NEVER the problem, in my experience, it has always been the owner that neglects, or abuses an animal. If you seriously want a cat, go to Hillside, and adopt a cat that you would die for. Be prepared to feed it when it's hungry, give it affection when needed, and take it to the vet when it's sick. Do not abuse an animal when it does something you don't agree with. Accept the fact that animals will be animals. They can't understand English, and they will eat off your plate if you put it in front of them. They will scratch your couch if they do not have a scratching post. They will urinate on your floor if they don't have a clean litterbox. Hillside would not be overwhelmed with animals if the previous owners would've made the right decision in the first place. Spay or neuter your pet, and raise it right. Know what you are getting into before you adopt! Pets are not toys. They are living creatures JUST LIKE YOU, and they have feelings! Where do i begin. This place is horrible. We wanted to get another dog to add to our family. We thought we found one perfect for us. The shelter flat out LIED. The dog was a polar opposite of what they described. The dog tried attacking me and was very mean towards me. We thought it be best to bring him back. When i brought him back we both were extremely upset it didn't work out. The one guy was very understanding. Took a very long time for someone to help or ask if i needed help when multiple staff members walked past me. I didn't catch the name of the manger who was doing the paperwork. She ask why he was coming back. I explained what what happend and she flat out called me a lier. What kind of person does that. By all means stay very far away from this place . Place is confusing when you first get there. Got to wait outside to meet a dog. The pens look disgusting. When you go into the meeting room oh man that just as disgusting. Once you get past the smell and dirty couches. I thought the best to rescue a dog but this isn't the place to do that. They don't know there animals at all. They just say what you wanna hear to get the dogs or cats out the door. read more

SPCA's operate as non-profits. Many people believe that non-profits are not businesses. THEY ARE. When a shelter turns animals away because there is not enough room, I would say this business is in deep trouble. Hillside SPCA is a "No Kill" shelter. That's a wonderful thing. However, when you make that promise, you had better make certain that you have the ability, financially to quickly find WAYS to get the animals coming through the shelter, adopted QUICKLY. This takes the ability to bring in donations quickly. Without outstanding PUBLIC RELATION skills, knowledge on how to hold successful fund raising campaigns and a DEDICATED Board of Trustees and a STELLAR Executive Director who is on staff FULL TIME with a degree that will effectively bring in the monies needed, there is no way a NON PROFIT can survive. I know. I was an Executive Director for a non-profit organization. From what I've heard, seen and read over the past 10 years with regards to Hillside SPCA, I would say, at this point, I would recommend, to ANY BUSINESS, that is serving as a PUBLIC CHARITY, when you can no longer serve the PUBLIC, as the CHARITY you propose BE, you should consider closing your doors. read more

I would advise people not to go here, but since they have a large quantity of animals I would feel like I would be doing them a disservice. My family and I went there to adopt a cat. Two of us had previously volunteered at this shelter and were looking forward to adding a new member to our family. We eventually fell in love with one particular cat and were ready to begin the adoption process. However I was turned down because I'm "too young". I am a 20 year old man. It's worth noting this is not mentioned anywhere on the website, and is probably some BS the lady made up on the spot. Why were we not informed of this before we entered? Why let us meet and bond with an animal and then tell us we're not eligible? Absolutely ridiculous. It is also worth noting that there are absolutely no measures in place for COVID-19. None of the workers wore masks, gloves, or anything. Which is extremely unnerving as the disease can spread through fur. The room they keep these cats in is not cleaned and is soaked in cat urine. It was so bad my father had a headache within a minute of being in there. There was a pale of dirty mop water on the counter, and there were cats drinking out of this. This cannot be safe or healthy for the cats. The cats are not separated which would be fine, but there were noticeably sick cats mixed in. There were also extremely territorial cats mixed together and on our visit we heard a cat fight. Cats like this should not be mixed together. Now I didn't see it happen but I did hear a loud smack after these cats were separated. I really hope they didn't smack any of their cats. There were friendly staff there, but there was also unfriendly staff. One woman was very friendly and helpful I wish I got her name. A young woman bumped into one of us without apologizing and spoke to us with an attitude. And the woman in charge was extremely unpleasant, condescending, and rude. She has absolutely no idea what she is doing and should not be in this line of work. Unless the management at this shelter changes I will not be returning. read more

I was told not to go to hillside, because they were "difficult to deal with", but I wanted to adopt a dog and give a home to one I found on their website. Filled out an application, including veterinary info, and was denied on the basis that one of my cats wasn't seen by a vet in 2009. That cat is as healthy as a cat can be and is up to date on her shots. There was no need for a vet therefore there is no record. That cat doesn't live with me, it lives with my daughter. Over the years my family has rescued half a dozen of cats, paying for every need and delivering them to shelters, and I have emailed Hillside pictures of some of them. the one criteria because of which they refused me was that my cat wasn't seen by a vet ! I'm sure they do what they can, but the day I was visiting, the temperature was below freezing and dogs were outside, obviously unhappy and constantly barking. read more

I have never dealt with an animal with such a complete lack of courtesy. I filled out an application, provided references, everything they asked. The next step was them contacting me regarding my application. Waited 2 weeks and never heard a word back. Been trying to follow up on the status. Well its been a month now - they wont return emails, they wont return calls, they wont return instant messages via Facebook. Apparently they could care less about getting their animals adopted. Have you ever made a mistake? I made my mistake on April 9, 2013 Have you ever made a mistake? Well I admit it, I made a horrible mistake that ate me up inside to the point where my conscious was making me physically ill. I gave up a little dog to the Hillside SPCA after rescuing her a month before. I allowed my patience to become rundown & I simply gave up on her. I felt defeated. Her name is Penny & she was rescued by me and my husband from a hoarder who kept her in a crate most of her young life. So after we thought we couldn't take it anymore we made the hard decision to hand her over to see if they could find a better home with someone who had more patience than we did. I went there, broken down & in tears, and handed her over to Barb along with a $100.00 donation. Barb promised me that they would find her a good home but she also knew I was very torn over giving Penny up so she gave me her word that if we changed our minds within a few days that we could come get Penny back and that they wouldn't do anything for a few days to make sure we made the right decision on surrendering her. Well, after realizing what I did to this sweet little girl, I called less than 48 hours later to speak with Barb about coming back up there and taking Penny back & giving her the loving home that I had promised Penny I would do the day we met. I spoke to a shelter worker who informed me that Barb was off until Saturday so I told her my tale and how I made the biggest mistake of my life and that I wanted to come back up there right away and bring Penny back to where she belongs. The worker told me she was already adopted but the tone in her voice told me otherwise. I knew Penny was still there but I didn't know what to do about it. I figured I was stuck until Saturday when I could speak to Barb. I called into the veterinary office that I have used for years & spoke to them about what I did & how I ended up losing Penny because she was already adopted out. I was told to stick by the phone and that they would call me right back. We quickly hung up & I sat here for a few minutes waiting to see what was happening. My phone rang & it was the vet office calling me back to tell me that they spoke to Barb & I could go up to get Penny. Why did the shelter worker tell me she was adopted already?. Didn't they want this little doggie to actually have a home. I don't know of any shelter that would think a life within shelter walls could be a better alternative than an actual home for a pet. From other horror stories I have heard & read about Hillside, I realized my experience with them was also going to be turning into one of these horror stories. At this point I wasn't only angry, I was becoming terrified. I left within 5 minutes of speaking to the vet to go retrieve Penny. I get there and I was treated lower than dirt. I felt as if I was on trial for being a child molester, all because I made an honest mistake while being totally mentally and physically rundown. They tried giving me a difficult time over getting Penny spayed while overlooking the fact that she needs a surgery for a medical problem. Both were already on the book to be done through my vet's office. I was still forced to use their phone to make the appointment. I was told I was not allowed to call from my cell phone so I was led into a private office to be forced to use their phone. I called the vet's office & I was asked if they were making me call from their facility. I answered "yes". I was then asked if they were in the room with me, again, I answered "yes". I was then told to hand the phone over to the worker which I did right away. The rest of the phone call between the worker & my vet's office took about 30 seconds. After that it seemed to me like the stalling they were making me endure was coming to an abrupt end. It took about another 10 minutes or so until I was reluctantly handed back my Penny girl. I had another $100.00 in my pocket that I was going to donate because of them helping me out the way they did but after being lied to and treated as if I was the lowest form of life imaginable, I kept the money & decided that I will no longer donate anymore bags of dog food or money to them ever again. I made a mistake in more ways then one but I learned something these past few days..... the most important one being that the horror stories about their staff not being honest with people are true among other problems. So, if you ever feel you have no choice but to surrender a pet for any reason, please, do yourself & your animal a favor and take it anywhere but there. They don't care that people are human and can (& do) make mistakes every once in a while but they will be more then happy to treat you like dirt while looking down their noses at you. The happy part of my tale is this: Penny saw Smokey (my 8 year old dog) and Smokey saw Penny & they were so very happy. read more

For a place that is supposed to help animals find a loving home they treat you like an idiot for wanting to adopt one. I am a stay at home mom of 2 children, own our home, have a dog who is at the vet regularly for check ups, who we pay health insurance for every month and buy him 70 bags of dog food bc he has food sensitivities, goes along with us everywhere, sleeps in our bed, is a huge part of our family!. Needless to say I consider ourselves pretty good pet owners. We took the decision to get a cat very seriously,we did our research, got everything ready, got a cat tree, litterbox, cat bed, ect..even installed a cat door from kitchen to laundry rm so she could have her own space. We decided on a kitten so she could grow up with the children and be used to being around kids. Back to the shelter, we've been there several different times looking everytime the lady in the front is very rude and short with you. When we went this past time we were sent to their small rm the one lady eyeballed me up and down like I ran a cat slaughter house. We spent an hour or so picking out a kitten, when we went to the other space there are cats everywhere sneezing, puss in their eyes, one cat was even bleeding from its nose. The lady who is usually in front office asked what I was looking for when I said we def want a kitten she huffed under her breath and says "Well that's not gonna happen!" I must have looked appalled and she goes "we don't adopt kittens to any one with children." Really!? Maybe you should have told me that BEFORE we spent hours there. I couldn't believe the ignorance in her voice like what was I thinking trying to adopt an animal from her shelter... silly me...that's what I thought it was there for. We drove right up to ruth steinhart in pine Grove, and adopted a kitten. the cats were clean and very well taken care of, the people were so friendly and helpful, it was a great experience! On a side note my parents adopted a cat from hillside a yr ago when they took her to vet she had 105 fever, ear mites, and was severely matted. Also when I was in there with my 4yr old one worker went on to yell about the "Sh1t"all over the place. I was fuming when I left, the worker in the cat section is just extremely rude. Bc of her a kitten there missed out on a very long happy life :/ read more

All I can say is that after donating a lot of money to this shelter, I will not donate another penny to Hillside SPCA in Pottsville, PA. Their manager is the most rude, disrespectful, and unprofessional woman that I have ever met. I found a dog there as a companion for Austin. The first time I went was great but they wanted me to bring him up for a visit with her. Sure thing.... I brought Austin up and the 2 dogs hit it off great. I offered to pay the adoption fee right then and come back after I brought Austin home and could come back and the manager said "absolutely not". So I said ok I'll come back tomorrow (Sunday). As many of you know the ice storms down in SEPA made travel a nightmare. I tried but no luck so I emailed them with no reply. This morning I sent another message saying I would be there in an hour to pick her up. I got a response saying that she got adopted so I decided to call and check for myself and a volunteer said "no, she's still here" so I drove all the way up. When I got there they left me waiting for about 30 mins outside in the cold until a volunteer said is anyone helping you? I said kindly that I've been waiting to pick up my dog and she finally helped me. I saw the dog still there playing with other dogs so I was stoked. They gave me the paper app which I filled out and then the helper came out and said. I'm sorry our manager said the dog was adopted. So, naturally I asked to speak to her. After waiting another 15 minutes the manager came in and verbatim said "she's adopted, you're not getting her". When I asked how is this possible she said that someone else came and made a down payment on her. When I said that I tried to do the exact same thing and made multiple trips from Delaware for the dog and they wouldn't let me pay up front she said "That's the way it is, you're not getting her" and told me to get off the property. I will not, and I would encourage others to do the same, ever give another penny to this shelter. It overall, was a terrible experience and the manager should be fired... Just my opinion. I adopted my beautiful cat from Hillside in March. The staff was friendly and seemed to really care about finding a good fit between the pets and the future owners. They even got in touch with my cat's past owner and forwarded me her medical information for my vet. It's a shame that such a great place has such negative reviews on Yelp-- I'd recommend anyone looking for a furry friend go to Hillside. read more

I had adopted at Hillside and 6 years later when my husband died I had to bring my beautiful companion back. I was a sobbing mess but was promised she would be shown first to people and within 2 or 3 days they let me know she foun a wonderful home with someone that had adopted before. It made my moving and transition bearable. They consider their pups lifetime family members and treated mine like one and made me feel okay about having to let her go rather than the guilt and heartbreak I walked in with. I agree with the other review, I wouldn't give this shelter a star, recently my neighbor lost her home, she had all her pets taken to SPCA because the police called them to take them, she never gave up her pets for adoption, I adopted two dogs from Hillside SPCA, I had a lot of respect for them, I lost it all when they took this women's pets, I saw her walk her dogs everyday, we had talks about our dogs, if there was an issue with her home, help her with the home, not take her family away, it's traumatic to place animals in a shelter,I saw these animals, they were healthy and clean and cared for, I'm not one to judge anyone. Two is my limit for dogs. For her she gave her life for her pets. If these pets were so abused like the papers said why did almost all of them get adopted in less than a week. She had full bred, well behaved, friendly, loved pets, that's why they were adopted so fast, not because she was a horrible pet owner. I hate this town, I came here for the same reasons she did, this was cheaper living and it's a big change. I never saw anyone get taken advantage of like Pottsville took advantage of her. You made her homeless and took away her family. Dogs and cats feel. They have relationships with their playmates, they are brothers and sisters. All the workers especially Barbara who runs the shelter should be ashamed of themselves. All they saw was a gold mine when they took her pets away. I haven't seem Leslie for a while. I saw her the day they were taking her dogs, she was crying and asking them not to take them, all this rescue did was make a good person who loved what she had and took care of their needs. I will never donate to the rescue again, I will support shelter pets in other ways. How about help people if something is wrong rather than mark them as abusers when clearly these pets were their whole life. You broke the law Hillside SPCA, you can't sell pets without a consent form. I heard a story from a woman in Ashland who told me her dog got lose and Hillside picked up her baby who had tags and could have been easily returned but instead got sold and later Barbara told this woman she didn't deserve her dog because she allowed her dog to get loose, that's horrible! Just like Leslie's dogs, this was an easily adopted dog, I believe in Karma, I believe you will get yours. Shame on you for what you have done to these two families. My wife fell in love with a little Pomeranian when we visited Hillside SPCA. They had no adoption applications, so they took our info. The next day they called while I was at the dentist to bring our dog down to make sure the dogs would get along. When I got home I called down about the visit, but the dog was going to the vet to be spayed. The day after my wife found a message on the answering machine( my wife works nights and sleeps during the day) telling us to call before coming down for the dog. This morning, with the $140 fee in my pocket, I called to see what time I could pick her up. They told me they gave her to someone else. They didn't think we wanted her was the excuse, even though we had been in constant contact with them. I guess the first one to cough up the money gets the pet. The workers are dedicated, the animals well-kept, but the heartbreak for my wife due to incompetence is inexcusable. After adopting three shelter pets over the years from other places, Hillside has dampened my enthusiasm to adopt any others. read more

Adopted my first dog from Hillside a few years ago. They are wonderful as are most people and organizations whose lives are devoted to saving animals lives. The Hillside SPCA has single handedly saved thousands and thousands of dogs and cats since they opened their doors. The first reviewer obviously does not realize that once you surrender an animal to a shelter it is not YOURS anymore. The organization can do whatever they think is in the animals best interests. Also, the $100 you kept in your pocket only hurt the homeless dogs and cats at the Hillside not the staff. Not to mention that non-profit organizations like this run solely on donations----donations/fees that pay for the housing and feeding of the dog YOU surrendered. The staff are making minimum wage....they are not in it for the money. read more

I went to volunteer my time at the SPCA to walk and play with the dogs, but discovered that the staff was very rude and actually yelled at us multiple times. We asked where we should walk the dogs and they said just down the hill with no detailed instructions. There is various grassy trails as well and I was on the grassy trail with the dog and was standing there while my dog was sniffing in the grass. A staff member walking a dog came onto the trail and proceeded to scream, I REPEAT SCREAM at us that it is a one way trail. Just to note, there is no signs saying it is a one way trail, we were not told that at all when we asked where to walk the dogs, and I wasn't even going the wrong way, I was just waiting for my dog to stop sniffing. She could have just politely said, " just so you know this is a one way trail" because it was obvious that we didn't work there and wouldn't know that unless told. Also, there is a white dog there that is often let out without a leash and is friendly and I was petting him while waiting for the young guy staff member to get us a dog to walk. I went to go pet the white dog again while waiting to give our dog back. The white dog was by a picnic table and I went to walk over and the lady staff member had a bunch of the dogs out without leashes. She yelled at me again saying "Go back behind the corner, I am not kidding go back right now" again screaming. I was not in her way at all, not even close to actually, was not close to any of the other dogs, was allowed in the picnic table area, and the dogs were not paying any attention to me anyways other that the white dog that was near the picnic table. In my opinion, if she was worried about having the dogs out while people were there volunteering (which many were that day) they should do that stuff after or before the hours that are allotted for volunteer walkers, or just ask politely. If they want people to volunteer and donate, the staff should not treat the public like they do. I love animals, which is why i enjoy volunteering, but I will never volunteer or donate to this shelter due to the fact that the staff was extremely rude, particularly a woman in her 20's or 30's with blonde hair wearing bright colored athletic clothes. I heard before the staff was not all that great from friends, but now I know for myself. I have volunteered at many animal shelters and never encountered staff like so.... I just feel bad for the dogs. I would be a sad dog too if I lived in a shelter with people like that taking care of me. read more

This shelter is pathetic. My fiancé and I have to been on the search for the perfect dog to bring into our home and we made the journey to Hillside SPCA with high hopes. We discovered a very confusing and chaotic establishment. We were lead to a wire fence that encaged dozen of dogs in one large group. None of the volunteers knew which dogs we were referencing too as there were too many and most of the volunteers ignored us. Upon asking to enter the shelter, we were denied. That is highly suspicious to me. All the dogs were put away before the scheduled closing time and we were left staring at an empty gated yard. What a way to run a dog shelter! We did not get to see most the dogs. It's obvious that these people hardly care if these dogs find good homes. A real disappointment. read more

Since the 1970's my family has adopted several dogs from this shelter. In my adult life, I have adopted 2 dogs from them. They are a wonderful NO KILL shelter. They will keep an animal for it's life, wherein other shelters will put it down because it's been there too long. It's not a fancy new building, but this shelter is clean, well-maintained, efficient, well-run, and has many volunteers who take care of the animals. Walking them, socializing, etc. All of their animals are well-socialized, they are all together, not separated and crammed in runs and cages. The volunteers and staff really care, and are very protective of their animals, as they should be. We donate regularly to this shelter and we know our money is going to good use. There are no high salaries and overhead. The manager, Barbara Umlauf, could not do a better job. She remembers every single animal who has come through their doors, no matter how long ago.
