The store wasn't busy that day and I could see her from where I was standing even though she couldn't see me; but the peace of mind I felt in that second knowing that she didn't panic and made a deliberate and clear call that only I could answer, was priceless. Been going here for several years now and previously had trained for years at World Taekwondo and…read more UCMAP at UC Berkeley (practicing Taekwondo and Yongmudo) and gotta say this dojo is absolutely INCREDIBLE!! Kimo-sensei and Ray-sensei are fantastic headmasters who have a deep knowledge of the art and are phenomenal at teaching it while prioritizing a very safe and healthy dojo environment (which is critical in a dojo - those of us who have been practicing long enough will know). The other senseis and fellow practitioners here are incredibly friendly, kind, fun, helpful, respectful and chill, so coming to practice is an absolute joy and we learn a ton in each session (if I usually come tired or in a bad mood/with anxiety I feel energized/happier/calmer by the end of each session, it's awesome.) I love how self-defense oriented this art form is and Ray-sensei does a great job connecting and relating techniques to real life applicability. We also practice healing arts at least once a term, where we learn techniques for resuscitation and how to treat a plethora of other ailments (as is an integral part of this art form) so overall it is very well rounded. It's a really fun and safe space for newcomers and I highly recommend it, everyone is so friendly and patient and willing to teach and assist. They do a phenomenal job of making sure everyone is mentally in a good space, and will make sure egos or destructive behavior is learned to be tempered/put aside so everyone is happy and safe training here.
