When I told the ophthalmologist, mid-procedure, that my eye wasn't numb and that she was hurting me, she kept going anyway. It was painful. I called afterwards to say I needed more than Tylenol for my pain, but they refused to call anything in for me. They didn't see me as a person. Zero concern for my pain level. What do you call it when someone who has the ability to relieve your pain refuses to do so? I wouldn't recommend Sabates to anyone. read more

We do not recommend the Barry Road Office. My husband had his eyes checked for new glasses. Took perscription to Walmart, had them made, husband could not see with perscription so Walmart remade with different frames, still could not see. Returned to Sabates, they checked his eyes, stood behind their exam same perscription, husband still could not see! Went to different Eye Doctor, they checked his eyes and came up with a totally different perscription. Walmart remade lens with new perscription and husband can see. If a patient/customer cannot see .... something is wrong! We do not recommend Barry Road location. read more

I went back once. My husband went back three times. Neither one of us can see out of our glasses. Their solution is to read the markings on the glasses from the lab and compare with the prescription. Never have they asked us to read a chart. Will not be returning. Hope no one is driving around me until my insurance will pay for another pair from somewhere else. read more

Made an appointment for a routine exam for my daughter, which she has gotten for the last 15 years. Doctor TRAN ran multiple exams leaving me with a $500 bill and causing my daughter to be at the facility for 3 long, unnecessary hours. She called me three times during her visit as no one explained to her what they were doing. After speaking to the doctor herself, she agreed to update the medical code to routine visit, which she did NOT, and is now no longer with the practice 4 months later. Teresa in billing was rude, unhelpful, and quite frankly, unprofessional while defending the billing code. I have spoken to Jody at the Independence location shortly after the visit, but now she is no longer returning my call. I am appalled by the unprofessionalism displayed by this business I have frequented for nearly 20 years. Please attend visits with your children to ensure they are not taken advantage of, either. read more

On November 21, 2022 I purchased two pair of lenses (regular and sunglasses) from Sabates Eye Center for $1,000 as I came out of my doctor examination. This was just for lenses that were to be fitted in my not-so-old frames. I was told that it would take about two weeks. The price seemed unusually high, but my eyes were still dilated and I couldn't read the many pages of fine print presented to me. Also, I think the lady's explanation of the cost was intentionally confusing. So after listening to a long drawn out spiel she finally came up with a price and it seemed best to order the lenses there and be done with it. Less than 24 hours later I realized that I could get the lenses at Visionworks for half the price so I called to cancel my order. I was told their policy was to only refund one half ($500) of my money. This is contemptible and they should be ashamed of themselves. I reminded them that I have been a lucrative and faithful patient of Sabates for over twenty years. But still I was told very cavalierly that this was their policy (even within 24 hours) and that they had already started grinding the new lenses. What a lie! I even left a phone message for Dr. Nelson Sabates but he never returned my call. How disgraceful! I have never seen a more unscrupulous refund policy. I have always been pleased with their care and have given them great reviews. But my opinion has changed. During the last year they performed two different surgeries on my eyes. The first to remove scar tissue on my retinas, and the second to remove cataracts from both eyes. My insurance would have paid 100% of the cost for the basic cataract surgery, but I opted for the "Presbyopia & Multifocal with LenSx" that promised the greatest likelihood of not having to wear glasses. My out-of-pocket cost for these implants was $6,000, but I thought it would be worth it. Concerning the actual surgery, I was on eye drops for most of the year because of swelling. My doctor told me that I might need a third surgery to remove even more scar tissue, but apparently he changed his mind and never brought it up again. My distance vision improved slowly after the cataract surgery, but for close vision I still need glasses for most printed material, including my cell phone, so I am constantly taking glasses on and off. This is no real benefit for $7,000 (including the $1,000 cost for lenses) and a major disappointment. Special Note I discovered that in January of 2022 Sabates Eye Centers (SEC) was acquired by EyeCare Partners. I cannot say whether all my eye surgeries after the acquisition, and their shameful refund policy, were a result of them changing their business model and the way they treat patients/customers. I just know that I can no longer recommend Sabates Eye Centers, EyeCare Partners, or any of their affiliates to anyone. read more

Dr. Pikey is a wonderful surgeon - with a new lens in the left eye. My vision is tremendously better. I really recommend him. Sometimes there can be some adminstrative mix ups with staff as this center is big with many locations - but I am very happy with my doctor!!! read more

After an insurance change (sigh), I went to this center for the first time, yesterday. I'm surprised at the number of poor ratings, as I was treated with courtesy and professionalism from the moment I entered the room. Even when I called to make the appointment, Telissa was most helpful in accommodating my somewhat weird, in and out schedule. The waiting room is large and comfortable. I was called back fairly quickly to start the round of testing. After having my eyes dilated, I went to wait in another waiting room and then saw the doctor. This movement from one room to the other was fairly quick. While waiting for the dilation, they have TVs available. I saw Dr. Pika (not sure of the spelling) and found him to be a good listener. I felt like I got my questions and health concerns answered so I went away happy. While the doctor did say I need new glasses, I appreciate that no one tried to strong arm me into buying them that day, at their location. They do have what looks to be a pretty well stocked area for choosing glasses but I just didn't want to spend the time shopping yesterday. Within about a half hour from start to finish, I was walking out the door, with another appointment made for next year. Not bad! read more

My first appointment here has me feeling like a herded animal in line. It's a rush process of hurry up, complete the task and move to the next customer. My appointment was scheduled for 9:00 AM. The check In is automatic. At 9:14 the tech did a quick "eye check" to see which line I could read on the eye chart with my glasses on. The tech told me I had 20/20 vision. The tech did the eye pressure check and took photos of my eyes. This took approximately 6 minutes. The tech administered eye drops to dilate my eyes, took my glasses to be read, and directed me back to the waiting room. At 10:38, the eye doctor entered to complete the exam for my 9:00 AM appointment. He stated my script was the same based on the ability to read the line and that would be my continued script for glasses. At 10:52 I was in my car. I did comment on the long wait when the doctor entered my room. He of course apologized and said they probably should spread the appointments out as He reviewed the various scheduled appointments (every 5-10 minutes). There was no looking thru the goggles to adjust vision completed during the exam. Simply read a line if the eye chart and call it good. Also, you are required to pay a $50 "deposit" at check in, regardless of insurance coverage. The receptionist stated my health plan covered the visit but they still require the $50. Billing will refund the $50 "sometime." Overall, the eye doctor (Dr Shah) wasn't horrrible. The tech is rushed to move people thru the process and very task oriented. If you want any type of personalized customer service or a timely visit this is not your place to go. For me, this was a very disappointing eye exam. read more

My one star rating is for the disappointing Sabates optical department not for the fine eye care given there by Dr. Sniekowski and Stoecklein. They deserve 4 or 5 stars. After my wife and I had our exams at Sabates last February, we tried to use our Aetna-Coventry benefit and could not even get close to our $350 benefit allowance. So we left and ordered my wife's glasses with Zenni.com on line for $100. In August I received a $25 birthday voucher from Sabates and we went back once again. Nope you can't use your birthday gift if you have insurance.....what? Guess what my last quote was $419 after the $350 insurance benefit allowance and that was using my old frames. Those $769 Lens did not including sun darkening. Today we went to Discover Vision Centers, talked to a very nice lady with 20-years with them who carefully explained what my benefits would allow, helped me select what I felt were nice, but basic metal frames and my total cost was $56 out the door which included a complete set of tinted, no line progressive lens and frames. $56 complete versus $419 for Lens alone at Sabates, what gives here? Discovery Vision has mine and my wife's forever business. read more

What started as painful, frequent headaches last summer quickly morphed into a potentially frightening diagnosis. A routine eye exam (at a small vision shop in Oak Park Mall - stay away!!) revealed that my optic nerves were swollen, a condition caused only by the presence of a tumor or a condition called pseudotumor, in which tumor-like symptoms occur but no physical tumor is present. I was immediately sent to Sabates Eye Center for a follow-up examination and MRI. I had absolutely no experience with vision centers or ophthalmologists prior to this event and arrived at Sabates scared out of my mind. The doctors and nurses were not only friendly but incredibly reassuring as they dilated my eyes and further examined my optic nerves. I left with a prescription and a follow-up appointment with one of Kansas City's two neuro-ophthalmologists, Dr. Billie Wallace, and I've been seeing her at the Barry Road location since. Although Dr. Wallace put me through the ringer, test-wise (complete with an MRI and spinal tap) she was thorough in her diagnosis, which ended up being pseudotumor. She has a friendly yet no-nonsense attitude that lets you know she's being truthful and up-front without being rude or abrupt. The nurse practitioners at Sabates are also wonderful. In fact, I randomly stopped by to see if they would print out my medical records for some insurance needs. Despite the fact that I had only had a handful of appointments over several months, all of the staff remembered me and immediately greeted me as I came in and were happy to comply with my request. Dr. Wallace and everyone at Sabates Eye Center turned what could have been a horrific experience into one that ended positively, and for that I'm eternally grateful. Even if your eye needs are less severe than mine (and I hope they are!), I recommend Sabates Eye Center for exams or any sort of vision care. The center employs a fantastic group of people, and now I even look forward to my appointments so that I can catch up with everyone. read more

I'm happy that I'm not the only one who had a shitty experience here. Billi Wallace was hands down the WORST Doctor I've ever had to visit with. I was blind in one eye and scared I would never be able to see correctly again. I had been to four other doctors that could not help me. She acted as if I was playing games with her when I said I was unable to see the chart items. She was rude and insinuated that I was pretending. I nearly lost it on this chick. I was afraid I was going to lose my job b/c of all the time I'd taken off work for various doctor's visits trying to find a resolution. I was afraid my entire life was altered due to this loss of vision. I hope karma pays her a visit someday. Doctors are supposed to HELP, not stress them out and treat them like garbage. read more

Nelson Sabates recommended cataract surgery on both eyes. I have photo toxicity in one eye due to his surgery. The 3 specialists he sent me to said, 'the eye he didn't operate on has a small cataract and my eye would have permanent damage if operated on.' Warning 4 lawyers said I have a great case but wouldn't take the case because of retainer. Hmmmmm why would someone need to keep so many lawyers on retainer if he was decent. I understand medical mistakes sadly happen but my mistake was trusting this guy. read more

I went to the Independence Office to get a full medical examination of my eyes. I walked out with a prescription & an order for two pair of glasses per the drs. suggestion. It took almost 2 weeks to the glasses. One pair was usable 2 days before they fell apart. The other pair lasted a week. I ended up going to a glasses shop & ordered a pair which were much less expensive & a one day turn-around. The new glasses didn't help. I still couldn't see to drive or work. A friend recommended another Dr. That Friday I went in for an exam & the following Monday my cataract was removed. Now I can see great! I ordered new glasses from the glasses shop. The lens were replace free because the precription was changed. I went to Sabates expecting the same but was surprised when the examing dr called back chewing me out because I had the nerve to say he missed the diagnosis. In my opinion I would never send anyone to Sabates. Unfortunately I spent several hundred dollars and recieved nothing but worthless glasses. read more

I made my appointment and as a new pt to the location at 7701 State Line. I was asked to arrive 15 minutes early. I waited an hour, and noticed another woman at the receptionist desk complaining about her appointment running late. She was scheduled at the same time I was and was also still waiting. I asked if it was routine practice to double book appointments and was told yes. I ended up leaving. It would be nice if they valued my time as much as they apparently valued theirs. The receptionist's explanation as to why they were running late was "well, they have to dilate everyone's eyes". As if this is something that was unexpected? Sorry. I only went here to get glasses, did not see a physician. I decided to go there because I had to go where my insurance would cover the cost the best. I was told I had to pay upfront ($180+ after insurance) to order the glasses and here three weeks later I still do not have them. Each time I have had to make contact with the company, they have not called me to advise me of the problem. But each time I called, I was told the lenses "broke" in the lab (three times they have broke in the lab now). I am very leery now about whether the lenses will break once I do finally get them. When I asked if I could cancel the order, I was told "he didn't think so." Whether it was their fault or not, I will not do business here again. I am not sure if they realize how much business they've lost because out of our family of 5, four of us wear glasses. read more

When I called to confirm what I believed to be my scheduled appointment, I was told that I was actually scheduled for a different day. That's ok, mistakes happen--I could have just as easily been the one who had the date wrong. Avoid!!! First they insisted I didn't have insurance, which I do. Had to call VSP myself to prove it. Booked an appointment with an MD for a refraction exam because I was concerned there might also be medical issues. What I got was a young technician who whipped through the exam so fast that I was not able to focus on the chart or follow what she was asking me. When she failed to match my prescription, she called in Dr. Billi Wallace, who has be the worst doctor I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with. She too raced through the exam and treated me as if I were a piece of trash. I left with a "possible" diagnosis of cataracts, a directive to use over the counter eye drops and no new glasses prescription. I was told to come back in a month to see another doctor. I don't think so!!! Best advice - ask your primary physician for a referral to a QUALITY optometrist or ophthalmologist. Sabates is dreadful and not worth the stress! read more
