We spent time walking around, trying different foods, and just enjoying the scenery. The alcapurrias and other fritters were delicious, and there were plenty of places to stop for a snack or drink along the way. It can get crowded on weekends and parking takes some patience, but that's part of the experience. If you're looking for a place that feels authentic, laid-back, and full of Puerto Rican culture, Piñones is definitely worth a visit.

Great visit to Castillo San Felipe del Morro on a Sunday morning…read more Arrived when they opened up at 9am and there was no wait to get in. Spectacular views of the castle itself as well the surrounding areas. Lots of history about the castle displayed through some great exhibits. Lots of walking, hills and some stairs throughout...so be sure to wear comfortable shoes. Great gift shop. Friendly and helpful staff throughout. Admission fee is $10, but grants access to Castillo San Felipe del Morro as well as the nearby Castillo San Cristobal up until the following day...so be sure to take advantage and visit both within that period. There is a reasonably-priced nearby parking garage (Ballaja Parking Garage) just a short walk to the entrance. There is also free street parking along Bulevar del Valle in the early morning hours.

This historic Spanish fort was built in the 1500s & played a major role in defending San Juan from sea attacks during the colonial era. Walking through it, you can really feel the weight of that history. The thick stone walls, open courtyards, tunnels, and lookout points all reflect how strategic & intense life had to be back then, especially w/ the constant threat of war & invasion. What really hit me most emotionally was just being there & taking it all in. Standing on the grounds overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, it was easy to imagine what it must have been like centuries ago(soldiers watching the horizon, waiting for ships to appear). There's something powerful about physically being in a place that played such a major role in PR's history. It was honestly a really memorable moment for me. Not just b/c of what I learned, but b/c of how it felt being surrounded by so much history in 1 place. It gave me a deeper appreciation for San Juan & the stories built into the island itself.

Colorful cement houses with some only partially built or partially remaining after previous hurricane damage. It's an interesting contrast to the beautiful historic buildings of Old San Juan that it bumps up against with a several hundred year old wall separating them. There are a few bars along the main road thru La Perla, but it's not very safe for tourists as night. It would be much wiser to go to the bars in Old San Juan only a block or two away.

Some more info about this spot/Place- this spot is on Route 187 between Isla Verde and the Rio Grande. means - if you are planning to Visit Playa Flamenco (which is a Must do- cause it is one of the top beaches in the world) and if you are coming back to San Juan to catch a flight then I would suggest taking this route 187. a couple of reasons for this- 1) Pinones area which is famous for its street/roadside small/decent food joint - you don't wanna miss if you are a foodie 2) Scenic Route 3) You wanna save money on toll skipping Route-66 (no sense paying rental company for its transponder and $10/day)

She said, "We will call you once you see our number at 9 pm; for your reservation, please return." It was 7:57 pm, and i had plenty of shopping that I wanted to do; so, I happily agreed to 9 pm. Well, 9 pm never happened because i received no call or text. Maybe I'm too trusting, or it was assumed that, since I'm deaf, I couldn't afford to eat there. Whatever their excuse for not reaching out to me was, it was utterly disappointing, but life is full of disappointments, and I added them to my Yelp list. While Puerto Rico is part of the United States of America, I can't help but feel like the Deaf population here is likely to be taken as bottom-wage earners, so my above-mentioned impression is likely correct. As mentioned in past reviews, a majority of countries that I have visited, apart from most North American and European countries, treat their Deaf population as less than or subhuman, as if the ability to hear is connected to intelligence. These experiences make me appreciate living in the continental United States, where people like Marlee Matlin, Phyllis Frelich, and many others have kicked down doors so we can be seen as equals.

You'd get a text message reminder a day before the tour and they would ask if you have food restrictions or allergies. You'd also get a reminder where the meeting spot is. We met at Banco Popular, introduced ourselves and went our merry way to the 5 different food spots. Pablo ordered the food before hand so that when the group arrived at the different restaurants/places, the food was ready and we did not have to wait that long. Our first stop was Cafe Cuatro Sombras where we had coffee and croissant ham/provolone cheese/guava butter. I liked this croissant with a hint of tanginess/sweetness from the guava. Noncoffee drinkers had options of lemonade and tea. Second stop was Señor Paleta. There's no indoor seating here so we had the delicious parcha (passion fruit) popsicle. Yum! Very refreshing, great for this warm weather! Third stop was Cafe El Punto. This place has a lot of artwork by local artists. We had ceviche de pescado and alcapurrias de la casa which were nice. Fourth stop was El Patio de Sam where we "made" our own mofongo. We had fried plantains and garlic butter, mashed them in a mortar and pestle, and added the chicken before turning the mortar upside down to get the mofongo. This was flavorful and had more moisture compared to another mofongo we had. Last stop for dessert was Vaca Brava. We had flan which was nice. We enjoyed the food, the tour, and the conversations.
