This is a small-ish YMCA located in Midtown Sac. I have been here twice now for the pool, which is good sized but also is kept way too warm for lap swimming (85 degrees!!!). The weight room and cardio/machine room are also pretty small, but the equipment is mostly good, with squat racks, barbells, etc. There's a large gymnasium with basketball. I am a bit dismayed by some of the other clients, who act somewhat rude and entitled. I also had an encounter with one rude staff member, but the others have all been nice. All in all, this place is o.k., but I could see myself getting tired of dealing with the other members too, and the pool temp really needs to be brought down. read more

My grandson been taking lesson for 9 months and he could swim the 1/4 length width of the pool forward & coming back freestyle. what an accomplishment. He able to drop in 12 feet water & swim to the side of the pool. He not afraid of water ever since he could walk. Now he 5 1/2 yr. My husband and I went to the YMCA on 21st and W Street to get a tour. We hadn't been in there for maybe 40 years when our children used to take swimming lessons. Jordan was our tour guide and answered all the questions we could remember! Jordan told us about the YMCA 360 app so we were able to log into that instead of carrying the keychain to check in! We came back the next week and worked out in the weight room and the bicycle. It wasn't too crowded. But I asked them questions about their classes if I needed to register or not, and I did not get the name of the worker that day. But she was very helpful to register me for this stretching class. And I wanted to know about the water arthritis class and she said we do not need to register for that. The workers were very helpful and didn't make us feel like we were burdening them. read more

I was visiting from San Jose and decided to check out this YMCA while I was in town. Wow, it was so empty and all the equipment is brand new. I was able to get an awesome gym session in with no wait for cardio or weightlifting equipment. I played some basketball and racquetball too because why not? The employees were super nice and let me in on a fun fact: former CA governor, movie star, and Mr. Olympia Arnold "Governator" Schwarzenegger himself used to work out in this same building in the 2000s! First of all, they ain't foolin nobody with that upside down W in YMCA. We know it's the young white christians association with that cheap ass rebrand. it's been like that since the 80's when they let my 9 year old ass sleep outside on the ground in a sleeping bag at their summer camp with NO BUG SPRAY (I woke up with hundred mosquito bites on my face) and it's still like that now when I email about the teacher discount that they advertise on the website but manager Karen (who can't ever find her inbox, said in a phone conversation a week and 2 unread emails later that they'd honor the discount since it's on their page) reverses course after she apparently sees my photo. A photo of my id she asked me to forward in another email that she also didn't respond to lol. no I found out my money was no good there when I visited today on my day off. She was at the "new" capitol gym. I waited a little bit for her to get off the phone so she could come and give me a whole song and dance about how she now couldn't set me up with the 10% discount. She said it was only for "first responders". Not her pullin out a laminated copy of the policy to show me teachers not on there lol when I reminded her of her words that since it was on the website, she would honor it. She did the backslide. "I was in the car." "I was confused." "I was picking up my daughter." But she was answering a work phone call lol She tried to blame the website offer on a rogue phantom front desk employee lol yall listen, the way this conversation turned unserious. Unless these front desk people can control the whole YMCA page from their phone. I know she was scrambling because I ain't never even seen half of these kids look up from they device when a member comes to check in (I took my kids there for a couple years doing swim lessons). You mean to tell me they on their iPhone writin code this whole time? Get out lol Needless to say we're just gonna have to find somewhere else to swim. It's not even the 10% that bothers me as much as it's the lack of effort. I feel sorry for the front desk dude who sat there quietly while she blamed him and his coworkers for the deal. I'm sure nobody there is gettin paid enough for that. YWCA need to spend some money on people who want to work because it doesn't look promising. But anyway, that's not my business. An oldie, but a goodie. This fits my personal need. This gym is OLD. Don't get it twisted, there are some good benefits to membership here. I had to put my 'regular' gym membership on hold since I hurt my knee. I was looking for a pool and a month-to-month membership option. BOTH of which they option. Paying for memeberships is easy. You pay on the 5th or 20th of each month, and you must cancel 15 days before your next due/payment date. Right now, and from what the staff said, most of COVID they have had promos to waive the registration fee. This is usually $49 dollars (I think, or close to). It was cheap to sign up and I have an easy way out when I'm ready to head back to my gym home. There is NO elevator, so when my injury was at its peak it sucked to walk down the two floors of stairs. I can't imagine how those who truly need the elevator would manage her. The facility is old, but it has the things I could ever need. If it was packed with people, then it could be an issue. But it hasn't been for the last 1.5 months, so I have had no issues. They have the cardio room upstairs and some of the main leg machines in there too. Downstairs you have all the weights, a stretching area, access to the pool, and the fitness rooms (which I haven't tried yet.) There is also an outdoor area where I've seen people play pickleball, do Thai Chi, and other various activities. They have women's and men's bars, for those who need them. They have spray bottles, paper towels, and hand sanitizer everywhere which is nice. The pool has pool things that may be helpful for you if you don't have your own - pool weights, kickboard, and other leg floaty things. They separate the pool into lanes - slow, medium, and fast -- until specific hours when they open most of the lanes for families to enjoy a half or more of the pool. Check the schedule of how it all works. The staff has been awesome. It's usually the same few faces every time I go. Even those who helped me on the phone were really nice and helpful. Go try your FREE first visit to see what I'm talking about. And, why did I JUST realize the YMCA stands for Young Men's Christian Association? What, I have questions! But if you look at the website for this location, it is all about community and health, which makes me feel better. Cheap and old, I ain't mad at it! read more

I recently joined the YMCA and I was pleased to find many classes that fit my needs. I especially enjoy the Pilates, QiGong, Core and Group Power classes. The instructors, Tia and Hallie are knowledgeable about physiology and technique with clear instruction on form. Tia also brings a light-hearted approach that makes the class fly by. I have to say, I love going to the YMCA! The people are very helpful, nice and the location is great! It's very clean as well. I especially enjoy the Zumba classes with Jackie, Celeste and the rest of the instructors. I just retired and needed some exercise and I really enjoy the Zumba classes. They gave me a one day free pass to see if i liked it and I joined after my trail class. They have so many other exercise options too. I'm a daily swimmer and a healthy person. I only joined for the pool, but quickly changed to a different gym. The pool is disgusting. After a couple weeks of swimming I got very sick with something akin to bronchitis. Thought I just had a cold so I paused swimming to get better. Start swimming again and a couple weeks later: bronchitis again! The reason? Cyanogen chloride from the pool because it contains so much urine. (Google it if you don't believe me: "Cyanogen chloride forms when chlorine from the pool reacts with nitrogen in urine. It acts like tear gas, roughing up the eyes, nose and lungs, and it's classified as an agent of chemical warfare.") I absolutely would not let a child swim there or anyone who is vulnerable. As soon as you walk into the pool area you are hit with the smell of chlorine. Even though I shower, I smelled awful like chlorine all day long when I was swimming at the Y. Do yourself a favor, save your lungs and eyes, if you swim regularly pay a few more dollars a month and swim at one of the private gyms in the area. Also, petty crime was an issue in the locker room. I had my goggles stolen, caught the guy and got them back, reported it, and the Y did nothing to address it. That kind of thing is not tolerated at other gyms. read more

I love this gym, it feels comfortable and neighborly. I've been a member of all the others, including the exclusive Capital Athletic Club. The group fitness classes are my favorite. I love them all, especially the women fitness trainers: Jackie, Tia, Traci, Molly, Hallie, Kang, Theresa and now a new trainer Jen. In fact I have joined personal training with Jen. I'm excited about my new fitness journey. What is also important is that I don't feel judged, they are all here to help me become more fit. From someone who loves overpriced group exercise, I'm pretty critical of fitness classes and these are quality! Classes include: barre, yoga, kettlebells, spin, bootcamp, Zumba, and Pilates. The facility includes a full cardio area, full indoor swimming pool, full basketball court, a weight room, and multiple group fitness rooms. There are large locker rooms with full amenities. The courses I have taken have changed my life for the better. My core strength has benefited from Pilates classes with Tia. Tia has a way of leading you through the exercise so that you don't even think about the physical challenge. While she is celarly anb athlete, her life is awash in music, and she shares her passion with her classes. She is also very compassionate on a personal level. I think it was thanks to a steady attendance at 7 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays that I was able to hike through caves and up hillsides in the desert in Jordan. As a retired senior, I have chosen a particular lane from which to experience the Y. I have only gone to 9am or 10am classes Monday through Friday.That said, the variety of classes is just what I need: mild to moderate flexibility and strength building; supportive rather than competitive environment; friendly positive energy. I've only been going 2 months, but I am already feeling more energy and strength. I am particularly enjoying Tia's instruction. Not only is she knowledgeable, but she's a bit like Mary Poppins ("A Spoonful of Sugar Makes the Medicine Go Down"). I am appreciating the other instructors I have experienced as well--Jackie, Elias, and Autumn. I am looking forward to the variety of classes I still have to experience. read more

Our whole family goes to the YMCA! It is fun for the whole family - kids and adults. We've been going for over 38 years. We've all swam in the indoor pool and done variety of work out classes in the classrooms. My kids were lifeguard certified at the Y too. Ms. Pat is my kids' instructors. Now my husband and I have retired and now we're back at a welcoming gym. We've really enjoyed the variety of classes - from water arthritis with Ms. Pat and her great energy with the other senior citizens from 10:15-11:15am MWF. On Tuesdays/Thursdays from 10:15-11:15am there is water aerobics with Ms. Teresa and she is a wonderful instructor with so much joy and energy! There are water activities for a range of abilities and topics. On land, there is a strength and balance fall prevention class run by Jackie and Elias who are both excellent instructors. There are zumba classes on Mondays with Silvia from 6:30-7:20pm and Celeste on Tuesdays at 11:30am-12:20pm. Thursdays at 5:30pm are with Molly and it really gets the blood pumping! It's a great work out. On Fridays we do Zuma gold at 10:30am with Jackie and that's such a fun class. On Saturday there is Zumba at 10:00am-10:50am with Kang and the variety of music she brings keeps us on our toes. There's a new World Cardio Dance class with Traci and it's been so fun. There's also Sunday Zumba class with Celeste at 10am. If you want to stay fit and have fun, come join us! All the instructors are so knowledgeable and the classes make it feel like you're just having fun. The price for all these quality and fun classes in addition to a well maintained facility makes the YMCA a community staple and an amazing part of my family's health. read more

A week ago I became a part of the YMCA community after several years of inactivity. The front desk staff have been extremely helpful and supportive. I am greeted each visit with a friendly hello and hot water or coffee offering if attending gym before 11AM. In the past my go to workouts and exercise routine consisted mostly of free weights, weight machines, elliptical or treadmill. Due to my long absence of physical activity, I decided to introduce exercising back into my life by starting with pilates, Tai Chi and Qigong . I have fallen in love with all three. Tai Chi Instructor Ron was both encouraging and patient with new learners and Tia is nothing short of amazing. Her sincerity, professional expertise, genuine concern for each student to exercise without injury along with her kindness, great music playlist, storytelling and fun facts definitely is a welcoming invitation to be both a part of her classes as well as pat of the YMCA community. September 4, 2024, This is in regard to the YMCA's reopening of the Capital Athletic Club building in downtown Sacramento as a YMCA in collaboration with CADA. I visited yesterday, and want to let folks, especially former CAC members who might be considering joining, know the following. The men's locker room/spa will be closed and there will only be ONE MIXED-GENDER locker room. I asked how they intend to provide privacy and security. They had no answers. All but one racquetball court is being repurposed for other uses, including one to be used as a meeting room. I pointed out that R-ball was a very popular activity among the former members they may be hoping to recruit, and the response was an "Oh well" shrug. There will be no towel service, so you must bring your own (true of most gyms, but those facilities are generally less expensive). There will be no parking validation program, which was a rare perk at CAC for sure, but just be aware and plan to pay to park if you must drive there, and add that into your membership cost. The pool will not be heated (please verify this - I'm not certain, but that's what I understood). And, to add insult to injury, the pricing is essentially the same, and maybe more than CAC, if you take into account parking and the loss of services. ($75/year to join, $78/month for adult + $10 for a permanent locker (bring your own lock); senior discount of $10/month for age 70 and older). read more

This is the best workout and Pickleball exercise venue I've ever used. Tia's an amazing QiGong/Tai Chi leader and Jackie does an outstanding job with the stretch and balance class. The Pickleball clinics and open play are easy to use and everyone is so welcoming. Classes are genuinely designed for seniors and I really feel like I get all the elements I need to stay healthy and safe. I especially enjoy seeing all the use by families. We come just for swimming lessons and the prices are great. Instruction isn't as good as Dolphin swim club. I think giving kids some freedom to just swim might be better than pounding on the basic fundamentals like kicking and floating. Of course those elements are important but at some point you need to just go for it. Especially when it's not a new learner. The most noticeable and uncomfortable aspect of this indoor pool is how incredibly hot and stuffy it is in the area. So much that it's hard to breathe. Getting a cross breeze in there would be heaven. It's almost unbearable, even during cold months. I fret to think what it's like in the summer when temperatures are really up there. Maybe they open a window? The only benefit for me is the proximity to home. I will likely switch back to dolphin for summer lessons. Checking things out otherwise, there seems to be a lot of activity going on. It feels like an inner city rec center. Kind of old school. read more

Best decision (and investment) was rejoining the Y off 21st street in Sept. 2021. Love the stretch class Wed/Fri mornings 9-10 with Teresa. It meets in upstairs basketball court which allows everyone plenty of room to spread out (not walking downstairs is great too!) I appreciate Teresa's level of detail in explaining the movements. I also like her flair for dance and choices in music. She incorporates a little of everything into her stretch class (yoga, dance, stretch, zumba, pilates to name a few) which for me makes it unique, fun and energizing. I also love Autumn's gentle yoga class mon at 11:30am and her level of instruction as well. Both teachers are very skilled, friendly and welcoming. I utilized the pool when it was warmer for lap swimming and availability of days and times is a huge plus. Members are very co-operative and easily share lanes when needed. I feel totally blessed to be back at the Y and highly recommend it for anyone on the fence about joining (or rejoining). read more

The YMCA offers a range of activities for all levels of physical fitness, from kids to seniors. The pool is big and the other swimmers are friendly. There is a huge gym for lots of different classes and activities and smaller rooms too. There are 2 areas for strength training, one with machines, and the other with free weights. The pickle ball courts are very popular in the mornings. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. I have really enjoyed Tia's classes. She knows everyone's name and has effective stretches and exercises, and lots of good stories. read more

I was looking for a local gym with affordable rates and found the YMCA. I regret not coming here for the past few years. This place rocks! Sure it's not fancy or state of the art....but the classes are amazing and I look forward to coming here. The best part is you can feel the community vibe while you are here. I've made lots of new friends and am more in shape than I have been in a long time. I especially love Halle's strength training classes, Elena's Barre class and Corrine's Zumba class.
