Existing fragments of a wooden bowl dating to 700 BC were recently discovered in an Etruscan tomb. The Egyptians undoubtedly turned the legs of chairs and stools and other objects. (An illustration of a lathe carved on an Egyptian tomb wall dates back to 300 BC.) Turning was certainly known in Grecian and Roman times. The Zick family, from Nurenberg, Germay, produced in the 16th and 17th centuries, many of the exotic and seemingly impossible pieces seen in museums today. The Copenhagen museum has in its collections objects made by Christian V and Frederick IV, both kings of Denmark. Two French kings Louis XV and XVI, were ornamental turners and collectors. It was almost like going in a museum of local art. I had a chance to spend some time talking to the owner while there and it was inspired by her late sister who was a gifted artist. She had one piece of art left from her sister on display in the store. The owner is a former occupational therapist who decided to commit to pursuing a dream that will include art lessons and the art of cooking later this year. Less than a year old, this is a gem of a local owned business you must stop in and see if in town.
