It's too bad. The store is nice, but wow, does the service suck. There is only one cashier for 10 people. I have never seen the self-checkout lanes open. People are unhappy working there! I contacted Safeway via their website about a month ago: Yesterday morning (7AM) before going to work, I went to your store in Greenbelt (7595 Greenbelt Rd, Greenbelt, MD 20770) to get the Buy 1 Get 2 Free Oscar Meyer hot dogs. There is no Safeway near my house, so this one near my work is the only one I get to. They were out of the hot dogs and forgetting the sale ended that day, I didn't get a rain check. I couldn't have gotten one anyway since the customer service does not open until 10:30AM!! When I went this morning, I was disappointed to realize the sale had ended, so I talked to a manager to see if he could help me. (At 7AM, so customer service wasn't open; He was being a cashier.) All he said was, "Then it's not in the system." I asked for a raincheck and he said no. Now you may be thinking that he followed the rules and I should have gone out of my way to go back again later in the day yesterday to get that raincheck. But other stores that I shop at have such superior customer service, why should I bother going back? Managers at Weis, Giant, or Shoprite would have helped me and all have their customer service open much sooner than 10:30AM. So I am cutting Safeway off my list of stores. After the repeated offences of terrible customer service, this was the last straw. Every time I come here, I ask myself WHHHHY! The service is good but the food is terrible. The produce is always touch and go. Half the fruit is spoiled with soft spots and the same goes for the veggies...and the prices are still high...oh, and the lines are always long! There are always a lot of staff wandering around but only 2-3 people on the register! Don't expect more to get on when the lines get super long either, they'll just watch while you wait! It's sad because this place is very close to my house, but I take the drive to Wegman's in Woodmore or Harris Teeter in Laurel. I was sexually harassed by a male cashier and a customer on different occasions and when I reported it to the female assistant manager, she was condescending and dismissive. I have had female cashiers laugh at me and speak of their private intimate lives in front of me, including their 'tinder dates', information I would not care to hear from even my closest of friends. The store is always understaffed, less than a decent standard of clean, and the salad bar is also a disgrace. Once, when I was ill and dizzy, broke out in a sweat and almost passed out, the cashier was laughing at me instead of showing any concern. She said some offensive stuff about my nationality and I believe she should seek employment elsewhere that does not involve customer service if she can not keep her offensive comments to herself. The selection and the deals are pretty good, but the wait times for checkout are absolutely terrible. They almost never have more than two registers open, and if you go at a busy time, the lines are more than halfway to the back of the store and you're guaranteed a twenty minute wait or longer just to check out. The self-check out is faster, but not by much since it frequently has problems and someone needs to wait for assistance. It's not too bad if you go early in the morning before work, but I rarely get up early enough to spare that kind of time. I MUCH prefer the Co-Op in old Greenbelt, and will only go to Safeway if I can't find what I need there. read more

Just because I gave the Safeway three stars doesn't mean that it's a bad Safeway. And fact I actually like the Safeway and that it's never busy and the prices are very good. That being said I eat a lot of specialty products many of which they don't carry at this location. I eat mostly vegan and gluten-free and they don't carry the top brands daiya, some udis etc you catch my drift. If I just need to go to the store to get the necessities this is a good option because I know that I will find things for Less. But if you're expecting to get everything on your list including a hard to find product then you may have to go somewhere else. read more

Avoid this bakery like a plague if you need to order custom cake or any cake you need the bakery to make for you. Years ago this same bakery forgot to bake my birthday cake several times! and messed up my cake orders, year after year, so I stopped ordering cake from them. Years passed, and this year I decided to try them again rather than drive farther to another bakery. The very light-skinned heavy set woman that took my order said they didn't have a cake book for me to select the type of cake I wanted. She said they take custom cake orders (to my surprise because many times in the past they refused to do custom cake and customers have to choose an option from their cake book). So I told her what I wanted and showed her the picture. I asked if she wanted to keep the picture, but she said she remembered and didn't need it. She wrote my cake description down on the order form. The day I picked up the cake, she brought the cake out and was preparing to leave for the day. The simple two tier cake was missing the single large flower and the ribbon. I pointed it out to her and asked if she could add at least add the flower but she was very reluctant as she was to even take my order on the day I came to place the order. She said she forgot to add the flower and she couldn't do it anymore, and it was obvious she didn't care. Customer service gave a discount for the cake. I got home to find out the icing was not whipped icing like I asked for, the bottom layer was not a quarter sheet cake but covered in so much icing to make it look like the size of a quarter sheet cake, and the top tier that was suppose to be chocolate was vanilla. This will be the last I will ever order cake from this Safeway. Even after many years, with different bakers and different cake decorators, this Safeway bakery still can't get it together. read more

Prices are 30% higher if you don't get the Safeway card. Minus one full star. Entrance is limited to one door by about 9pm and the parking lot is odd compounding the difficulty in parking near the entrance. Store is nearly dead by this time. Minus one star. $5 for a huge box of good chocolate chip cookies. We went thru three boxes at work in one week, about 150 cookies. Each box we finished by end of the work day with each person eating about 5. Plus half a star! read more

It is like communist Russia in here. Incredibly long lines with people waiting a half hour to check out. I have never seen this before in any other grocery. I called management while waiting in line and asked why they don't open up more cashiers since it was only one cashier and the others were self check out. And the guy said it was because they have a cap from upper management on how many people they can hire. Which I find utterly disgusting. These corporate pigs are just fine taking our communities money, but forget actually providing jobs and giving back. They used to be so much better. I can't wait for this hellhole of a market to close so we can get a real market instead. And please fire that fat as hell, complacent lazy Manager guy who just sits and sleeps at the front of the store and sends his employees to do simple tasks he could easily do if he actually moved around for once. read more

It's a grocery store. It's got a decent selection and ok prices if you come in with your card and coupons in hand. It has a Starbucks and free WiFi inside. I don't buy too much produce in here because it can be kind of hit or miss with the freshness and moldiness of the produce. I think I got one bad fish from here because after eating it I got sick, but I've frequently bought fish here so I just chalk it up to bad luck that one time and inspect the fish more closely. I'm not bothered by the "rude" staff because you got some good ones and some bad ones like any other place and I'm not a delicate flower that needs my existence acknowledged everywhere I go. I like this store more than any other grocery store in the area... I only go here if I need actual groceries... If I need something like milk or cereal or just a few things I go to Target. I always use the self checkout lines in Safeway no matter how full my cart is-I seem to work the self checkout faster with a full cart than some people do with 3 things. It has a starbucks inside, and a few ladies at the deli counter are nice. Parking is always a pain, and the parking lot is always full of crazy people. It's located in a shopping center so the parking is "competitive". Ha. read more

I had a great experience in the Safeway after going to 3 Giants, 2 CVSs and 1 Walmart looking for dry bean black eyed peas to prepare for my Holiday party. I was so frustrated, because the Safeway was out of stock as well, but the ladies at the deli counter convinced me to purchase the Glory brand canned black eyed peas. One employee stated she had been forced to do the same, but the Glory brand was very good and still could be doctored to my desired taste. She was absolutely correct! They were a hit! On my way out I looked at a pumpkin strudel cheese cake and the bakery employee was right there to quote me a price and convince me it would be a great addition to the cakes I had baked. I absolutely hate this Safeway. There is never any staff around to help. I would come here daily for the salad bar and it would never be cleaned or stocked properly. I'd always have to waive down someone in the deli to request simple things on the salad bar such as lettuce or eggs. Some employees would just be rude and tell me they are out of lettuce or look aggravated that I'm bothering them with a request of lettuce. What even worst is that the salad dressing bottle are never clean or wiped down and always have a residue and oily feel to them. And they are never stocked properly the always have oil but not vinegar. I've asked countless times and it has yet to be restocked on the salad bar in the past 4mths :(. At that point I just stop coming to this Safeway all together... And will not return, I'd rather drive out of my way to Harris Teeter in Laurel then go to Safeway. This Safeway was within walking distance from where I lived for most of my formative years, and having a Korean mom who refuses to get on the Beltway or drive anywhere too far, this Safeway was our grocer of choice. Even today, I find their selection to be fantastic, their prices fair, and their sales excellent. Several things I like about this Safeway: 1) Koreans can't make an F sound. Yeah, that's right. Puck you, man! So most Korean moms will call this place Say-Puh-Way-ee. 2) There aren't any signs for it, but there's free WiFi! After trying it out at the Laurel location, I decided to turn the WiFi on and lo and behold, SafewayWiFi. It's free and after using it for a few weeks, I've found WiFi to be awesome for comparison shopping, looking up recipes on the BigOven iPhone app, and killing time in line (see below). 3) You can get Embassa Chipotle Peppers in Adobo Sauce here, which is a key ingredient for the famed Chipotle Lime Sauce. 4) There's usually a healthy frozen lunch entree on sale here every week. When Lean Cuisines are on sale for $2 a pop, people swear I'm storing up for a nuclear winter or something. 5) Olivia D. will disagree, but I LOVE Safeway cakes. They also have Carvel ice cream cakes, which I love! Especially those little black crunchies and the blue frosting that turns your lips purple. 6) They now have self-checkout lanes. Why have someone scan and bag your groceries for you when you can do it yourself for free?! A couple things I don't like: 1) The lines can get insane here. That's what the free WiFi is handy for. One negative side effect of this is that people will stare over your shoulder at whatever it is you are reading. Get out of my grill man! 2) They're moving to all organic produce. Yeah, organic is all the rage, but I'd prefer to have a choice. What if I don't want to pay $2-$3 for a lb of green peppers and would rather pay dirt cheap prices for the pesticide-ridden variety? My favorite grocery store in PG County. When you don't want to deal with the Asian ladies in the parking lot at Lotte/(Super)Grand Mart and don't feel like paying premium prices for Whole Foods, head to Safeway for your eat-at-home needs. read more

Store is fairly clean. Hit or miss employees. Had cashier complaining about people shopping at 9:30 at night. "These people don't have lives, who shops at 9:30"? With a response from the manager, "when people smoke they get the munchies and now they're shopping". Rude and unprofessional by both employees. Seems like they only have one line open after a certain time no matter how many people are in line. Multiple times I've waited in line for 20 plus minutes. Only reason I still come here is because of its proximity to my house. A lot of People in the area a terrible drivers. Parking lot can be a death trap. I've seen multiple people on different occasions using the car next to theirs to rest a cart on, both when loading groceries into the car and leaving it there when they're done. read more

I wish I could give this store 0 stars. I purchase expired mayonnaise from this location recently. After soaking to the manager, he told me that usually you can eat mayonnaise after its expiration. I work near this Safeway, so it's become my go to store when I need to pick up something quick before going home. Or it used to be. The issue is that it's no longer quick. Every time I go here recently there are only two cashiers open and lines twenty people deep. Even self check out takes 25 minutes. From what I've heard from the disgruntled employees is that this Safeway has made cut backs and are keeping it staffed at a bare minimum. The cashiers are working a long shift with no breaks. It's gotten to the point I would rather drive all the way to the Harris Teeter in SE DC than come here. read more

I moved into the area recently and, desperate for a local grocery store, decided to try this place. Now I can't wait to find another place. The store is awful. I can only echo what has been said about the service being horrible. I forgot my Safeway card (the one that gives you a discount that makes the prices only slightly higher than everyone else's) the other day. When I got the card they took my phone number in case I didn't have the card with me. What they didn't tell me was how pissed off the cashier would be because I asked her to type in the number. She treated me like a crook. She either couldn't figure out how to enter the number or was afraid of breaking her nails, so I wound up paying the full amount. I would have been a bit more lenient, but this was after being told to "just wait" at the deli counter because the kid working there was on the phone to his girlfriend and then had to wash his hands (don't ask). I spent 20 minutes waiting for this kid to get back to work. I am looking for another grocery store in the area. This store is terrible. read more

This not the first time the Pharmacy has openeded more than 15 minutes late. I called customer service while standing in line with 5 other customers to get an estimate of the time the pharmacy opens. The young lady hung up the phone when I asked for estimate . Several employees have walked past us and no one has taken the time to inform us on the time of opening . People in line are frustrated and complaining about the horrible service. I will gladly take my money to giant less then a mile away. read more

I have recently decided to start shopping elsewhere and here is why: 1) They have good specials but often it all sells out quickly. 2) Without the specials, the prices are higher than other places. 3) And this is a BIG one. The lines are ridiculously long. I have never been and not had to stay in a line that went a long ways into the isles. This also makes shopping some of the isles more difficult. 4) The self check out lines seem to be unmanned, broken or having some technical difficulties. All of that being said, the store is usually clean, and the parking lot well lit (if you are going at night). The non-checkout employees seem to be very helpful and polite. But those pros don't make up for all the cons. read more

While I live 1/2 mile from this Safeway, I rarely shop here. I mostly shop at the Giant Food at Eastgate Shopping Center. I shopped here recently and it seemed a bit under stocked and a tiny bit messy and sloppy. Not very many registers open, except for the small self checkouts. I don't particularly like their self checkouts, they seem a bit cramped. You have to bag each single item as soon as you scan it. I prefer Giant's self checkouts because they have the long conveyor belts so you can scan everything all at once. Overall this Safeway isn't bad but I will probably only shop here once in awhile instead of each week. read more

This is my default grocery store. I live down the street, and while I'd like not to shop here, it's the closest. Here's the rundown: 1) parking lot is usually packed, unless you park on the side closest to greenbelt road. people drive like crazy lunatics around here. speeding from Wendy's to CVS. they don't let you actually get out of the parking lot so others can get in. it's a mess. 2) the lines are always freaking long, unless you go during the day when other people are at work. yes they do have self-checkout, but don't even try these if you're using coupons. 3) service, in terms of check out and returns, is less than mediocre. There used to be a Korean American woman who worked checkout, and she was by far the most friendly. Where did she go? I miss her. 4) service, in terms of produce, is ultra friendly. There are usually two produce guys who'll just go around to shoppers and ask how they're doing. 5) prices are more expensive than giant, shoppers, superfresh--unless you hit a special. the specials are usually great. 6) bakery and ready to go food selection is nicely put together. 7) it's clean and easy to navigate. read more

Staff at this pharmacy always seems to care that your waiting when your in front of them. However, I've never waited longer for medicine in my entire life. My doctor send my prescriptions in at 3:30 I get there at 4:45 the man behind the counter says he just received them that he's working on them but there will be an hour wait. I went back to The counter at 6:10 because they still hadn't called me mind you he told me it would be one hour at 4:45, he told me that he had only completed two of my four prescriptions and that he was working on them right now and that he would be with me right away that being said I continue to wait it wasn't until 7:15 PM that the pharmacy called me telling me my medicine was ready. I only use this pharmacy because it is right by my doctors office which happens to be an hour away from my house my doctor prefers that I use this pharmacy because they always have the stock of the medication that his patients need. I realize the time that I should up to the pharmacy is in their teak busy hours however it does not matter what time I have shown up there it could be first thing in the morning lunchtime early evening you get the picture you're going to wait a ridiculously long time either way. Something needs to change someone isn't doing their job and if I'm sincerely wrong then you guys need a much bigger staff!!! Figure it out, because you have extremely important jobs! This is one of the worst grocery stores I've ever seen in terms of management. Whoever(s) runs this story is irresponsible and does not respect the surrounding community or his/her own employees. The self-checkout lines are almost always broken, which means there are incredibly long lines because there are usually one three or four lines open even at peak hours. The cashiers work their hardest, but I get the feeling some of them aren't trained very well: they frequently can't deal with the coupons without calling someone in, which of course creates even longer lines. Meanwhile there is a Starbucks carrel in the store that is almost never busy, and the employees there usually stand around chatting when they could be working the registers - and btw, there is an actual Starbucks in the same shopping center! It's 8:30 AM and my wife just texted me: one line open (no express lines) and a line going down the aisle. The cashier is dealing with a customer who is upset that they won't accept some kind of payment, and this is taking forever to resolve. The manager (or someone) was just sitting behind the customer service counter chatting, apparently; couldn't care less about the waiting customers, or to open a new line. We've emailed to complain and have been sent back a form email. It doesn't seem that anyone cares to do anything about this - which is unfortunate, because they serve a diverse community that relies on them. But my guess is that that there is a lot of cost-cutting going on here in the name of valuing their customers. I've been to other Safeways and they were fine - I really like going to the one on New Hampshire ave at Hillandale - it's well-staffed and clean. But this store is a bad reflection of their corporate identity, and I will drive further down the road to go to another store just to avoid them. You should too. For Greenbelters: I recommend you go to the Co-Op at the Roosevelt Center: its as efficiently run as the Safeway is poorly run. Nothing is going to change about this store. This store has long lines, bad produce, and old dairy items. I unknowingly bought a dairy product over a MONTH past its "use by" date. It ruined my entire dinner, and i only knew it was bad when the dinner came out of the oven absolutely reeking, at which point I checked the labels on every thing in the dish and found the culprit. I had to throw it all away and order $30 worth of pizza for my family. When I returned the item and asked for a refund of the item and the cost of the dinner (parts of which were purchased elsewhere), the person I spoke with (while very polite) insisted such a move couldn't be "justified." Really? My whole dinner ruined by YOUR store? He eventually offered a gift card that just about covered what the dinner cost, and I appreciated that, but what a mess. read more

The shoppers for online service never give you coke if it is on sale. You do have coke in a different size stop lying. This time they tried to give me diet coke. I was told they would not redeliver it I had to buy another whole 30$ worth of groceries to get my coke that they messed up not me. Fraudsters. I said no forget it cancel my entire order they said OK. But they did not process my cancelation. They are dumber than a box of rocks and liars. So they show up to my place trying to push groceries on me I already canceled. I refused the groceries. Then they still charged me for the groceries I did not receive. Fraudsters. So I had to call back again and complain and demand my refund. It is not my fault their con artist people they pay to do customer service get paid for nothing because they wont process cancelations. I CANCELED THE ORDER. They better process my refund on the full order as I did not receive anything. I will have to look at my statement everyday because they lie. Lets see if they process my refund this time. I will be contacting the Attorney General and Consumer Protection Agency if these fraudsters do not refund my money. I have had enough of this bullocks and I after 10 yrs of being their customer because the new management and way of doing things is VERY BAD I AM DONE. I will never buy from this store again. After working 15 hours I come to this grocery store and have to deal with a miserable and rude cashier, who can't even acknowledge me, scans my groceries while tweeting, and gives me an attitude because I ask for my receipt. The girl never looked at me nor said a word. When she was having issues with the transaction she didn't say anything. I couldn't tell if I was finished, so I asked her. She said "No". Another staff came to override and she still said nothing to me. When She starts scanning the next customer I realized I was done and had to ask for my receipt. This isn't the only rude cashier here. It's your average grocery store, although they are selling more gluten-free items which is great. HOWEVER, that's as far as "great" goes for this store. The staff at the pharmacy and Starbucks are some of the rudest I've encountered. The pharmacist barely looked me in the eye when I asked about medication for my son. He shrugged his shoulders a lot and gave me matter-of-fact responses. Clearly, my question annoyed him. The "Rudest Staff" award definitely goes to the Starbucks staff. I walked up to the counter and was immediately met with 3 sets of "what-the-hell-do-you-want" looks. I ignored these, it was early in the morning and I was barely awake, too; hence the coffee run. One of them asked me in a bare whisper if I wanted whipped cream and I responded "no". I have no idea why she even asked me because she was not the one making my coffee and the woman who was making my coffee didn't care about my response. So, my "no" fell onto deaf ears and I paid for a cup of coffee I didn't ask for. But, since I am not one for confrontation I decided to just ignore it - after a few walks around the store, I couldn't let it go. They are paid to make coffee to their customers' specifications. But really, it was about the looks they gave me when they first saw me, with such attitude and disdain, as if I had just insulted them, spat on them, and plucked them in between their eyes, I would have gladly sipped on the coffee and enjoyed the guilty pleasure of whipped cream on a drink. When I went back to the counter, the same 6 eyeballs rolled and looked back at me is if I were absolutely insane. The woman who made my coffee took it from me, took a wet spoon, and scooped out the whipped cream, all the while muttering things under her breath that her friends could hear and whispered back to even though I called them out on it (quite remarkable, really, that they could communicate like that). I told her "no, that's not ok" and she asked if I really wanted her to make the coffee again. I said yes, and she made it, this time with a smile on her face which led me to believe that even though I was watching one of her friends probably put some dirty soap water or something in my drink (just a speculation, maybe I've seen too many movies). Bottom line is: be weary of the kiosks that line this store. You're better off staying in the middle and checking out yourself (Patricia at the self-checkout is very nice!). read more

Their prices are higher than other local chains, so I think the produce should be fairly decent; however, it still looks as if it should be in the half-price "past the sale date' bin. The cashiers were hired as if to take part in a competition for the fattest and sloppiest ever people. yesterday, April 25 7 pm, the cashier by the name Terrea showed simply outstanding (but not unusual at this store) service - 15 minutes for one client with 9 items (I counted, had time you know!). What she did meanwhile - without looking at us she was simply talking to some young guy, her relative, discussing his tax filing. No "thank you", no "how are you", nothing like this, forget it!!! the most unhappy people work here and make us, customers, the most unhappy to even get in.
