"...DOESN'T QUITE LOOK LIKE IT ~ BUT, THEY DO MAKE A MAGNIFICENT SANDWICH..."…read more
On the road at 6am this morning - school hols over for us - left the mighty interesting West, back out to the East...
I don't usually go looking for food in the morning, but at about 10am, I got a real craving for a nice sandwich...
Ah the simple 'sandwich' - A really good one is actually quite hard to find.. if rarely or ever found..!!
I remembered this place near Swinburne Uni on Burwood Road Hawthorn - FOODWELL BAKERY CAFE - it's got a bit of a look of yesteryear about it - thought I'd try there - as good a place as any...?
Walked in, and immediately thought I might'a made a bit of a mistake - A lovely young woman poked her head out behind the door - Oops, too late to walk out....
I ordered for myself, and my eldest, he's not back at uni yet - 2 Chocolate Milk Shakes [$5.50 ea] and 2 Hot Chicken Schnitzel with Full Salad Sandwiches [$9.20 ea] [Could'v had tuna, salami, ham, egg or cheese]
To my surprise, I had a choice of about 6 breads and 4 types of Rolls..
I chose a rustic looking, crusty, seedy, wholemeal, high-tin loaf - she removed the loaf from the baker's stand and hand-sliced 4 large thick slices..
She went out back and brought in 2 huge freshly cooked crumbed chicken schnitzels on a platter - No to butter; Yes to salt & pepper; Yes to mayo [could have had mustard, green pickles, chutney, aioli, thousand island, dijonnaise..]
I had a choice of salad - decided on iceberg lettuce, cucumber, tomato, red onion, beetroot, carrot, sprouted alfalfa [could'v had avo, capsicum, gherkin, chilli..]
Another woman came out to make the milk shakes, so all'd be ready at the same time.. Paid by card - $29.40..
Got home; knew these things were gonna be big cos the carry bag holding the paper bags weighed a ton...
Seriously, they were enormous.. ginormous, in fact..
Honestly, if I'd known how huge they were gonna be, I would'v ordered the 1 only, a 1/2 each was heaps, the size of your usual big sandwich..
I was starving, and could only eat half - The big boy finished his, but it's nearly 8 hours later, and he hasn't come out fossicking around for another thing..
[That certainly doesn't happen when we buy at that well known green & gold sub franchise - Anyway there's just no comparison - It's like talking about apples and rubber tyres..]
These, today, were scrumptious - the fillings fresh; the bread to die for...!
The shakes were thick, creamy and filled right to the top - how often do you see that...?
And friendly, efficient, no BS service...
I will so definitely be going back...
