It has a 500-seat main auditorium and a studio space and boasts stage facilities that quite a few main-scale theatres would be envious of. In fact, it's a shame that the main house only seats 500, as the stage is large enough to accommodate some fairly large gigs that would attract a large audience. The cafe/restaurant out front serves a very high standard of pre-theatre nosh too and offers great views over the Clyde. A nice place to sit with a coffee and gaze at the scenery.

If we're ever back in the area, I'd like to stop in for a meal as there were a lot of great options to choose from on their menu and it smelled heavenly. There is a pretty big entry way where people can hang out during intermissions or before the shows. The toilets were bright and clean and easy to get to. The inside of the venue is great and we had really great seats. Four rows from the stage, dead centre. The only thing that was tough (and completely my fault) was needing to use to the toilet (too many pre-show drinks, ha!) during one of the opening shows. Being in the centre of the row of seats made for interrupting a bunch of people who didn't seem too thrilled about it. I was able to sit in a different row when I got back, for a few songs until the bad was done playing so I kept from interrupting any more people. All in all, the acoustics were great and the overall feeling of the venue was wonderful. Loads of seats and nice staff members to help you get to your seats. I would definitely come back for another show if we were to get tickets again.

However, it is a place that is best enjoyed in the evenings, as it is making a real effort to offer something different for Shawlands. Monday night has a computer game tournament, and there is live music from Thursday through to Sunday- Sunday being an open mic night, that usually serves up some local comedy. Friday and Saturday see it turn into a trendy pub, with a graduate aged crowd: busy, but the screens have Sex and the City all Friday night and the atmosphere is lively and safe. The actual fittings are swish: this has been a comedy venue in the past, and retains some of that cool atmosphere. The last time I went in, it still had canvases of comedians up on high. It's also possible to escape the crowds by going to their balcony. At the least, it gives a clear view of the action downstairs. The bands are local and mostly do covers. Saturday is blues night, there is a DJ on the Tuesday evening, with cocktails on special.

The night itself wasn't organised by the bar but someone outwith who hosts a regular music showcase. The evening felt very uorganised, and although, little of this is down to Sweeney's, the staff were of little help. We arrived early. The decor is eclectic, the pub definitely has a personal touch. I really liked the musical and instrument motifs by the stage area. There's also some quirky signs by the bar. Although, it did all a bit funky and mismatched to me. When we walked in, instruments in hand, we made our way from one half of the bar to the other; one which has the stage. Although the bar staff in the first room had explained we'd to head through to the second, nobody welcomed us or explained what would be happening when we got there. Other than a heckle from some folks at a table and a 'What will you be playing for us?!', we were left to it. We took a seat and, noticing no other instrument-in-hand folks, wandered exactly what the plan was. So we ordered drinks, and then I introduced myself and the band. At this point, more musicians were in the bar. Phew! The barman explained that the person who runs the night was running late. Understandably not their fault, what could they do? But then time went on and on. And there was no update from the bar. We just waited and waited. We'd presumed we were first since it had been listed that way without a mention of running times but after waiting till after the night should have begun (when the organiser finally arrived), we found out we were second. By this point, we just wanted to play; play and go home. In addition, the monitor mix wasn't great and the organiser had mistakenly thought there was two of us, so Sweeney's only paid two of us for performing. The general feeling was that there's venues out there doing amazing things for local music. The best and memorable gigs for us have had great hosts behind them. We just didn't feel this way about Sweeney's, and that's a pity.

Aside from it being a really great place for a gig, the bar area has a really nice vibe. It's relaxed and friendly and I don't remember it being too expensive. I like that the band have to walk past the crowd to get to the stage and although the main hall seems rather small, it is just the perfect sort of cosey for an intimate gig. It's versatile too. - I went to see the comedian Daniel Sloss and the main hall had been rearranged to suit the night. I felt like I was in a different venue! Tolbooth doesn't match the size of venues to be found in Glasgow or Edinburgh, but it sure does pack a punch.

I've learned fiddle tunes, songs, creative writing, and discovered that I love free jazz in this building. Highlights of my adult years have included Treacherous Orchestra, Lau, The Weekend jazz/alt music festival (sadly discontinued), Distil Showcase of new compositions, Jenna Reid Band and The Nordic Fiddlers Bloc. As long as I live in the central belt I'll be happy to support this trad venue, with its fantastic sound engineers and everything it does for traditional music. It's one of few venues outside the big cities that brings Scotland's best trad musicians to the masses, and continues to host both the beset of up-and-coming artists and established names like Breabach and Dick Gaughan. Nothing but praise for this noble wee venue that punches well above its weight.

It was a Wednesday night but i assume they only had karaoke on then because it was Christmas. The bar is pretty old fashioned inside, with the bar in the middle of the pub and tables surrounding it. We ordered some vodkas which were reasonably priced (just slightly more expensive than The Brandon Works) and sambucas. Instead of the normal clear shot, the barman gave us Luxardo Sambuca cream, a kind of coffee tasting liqueur, which blew my socks off. Safe to say the rest of the evening is a tad blurry. The locals were really friendly, the karaoke host was lovely and had some great banter with us, we even got up to belt out a bit of the classic Kenny Rodger's The Gambler! The pub always has entertainment on, with bands playing and themed parties for special occasions. It also has quite a sizeable beer garden which is perfect for summer. I would suggest that they make a website for irregular punters like me to see what is on and when. Other than that, it seems like a great wee pub!
