Nice place to pray and socialize. They have a great middle eastern grocery store as well. The new church is huge and beautiful

About three years ago I decided to give my life back to God and I was trying different churches out but something always pulled me back here because it felt like home. Now years later I have made this my home church, gotten baptized and also committed my three children to Christ. Such a great community.

Reviewing churches is definitely a dicey area, because so many people could be offended or forced to relive childhood spiritual trauma. I'm trying to stay away from divisiveness. I want to help local church hoppers. Fairfax Community Church reminds me of a "mocha choco ya ya latte" (as my funny friend S would say). From the parking lot traffic control, to the dome-shaped coffee lounge, to the public text-message screen in the lobby, and even the mostly white families in attendance, I got the feeling we were at Fair Oaks Mall. But instead of a store, I found a snazzy Christian soft rock performance and a suburban dad preacher guy. I was really impressed with the computerized daycare/Sunday school pickup. The website boasts a pizza night - which is honestly something that drew me: free food (regardless if one tithes). The church is affiliated with the Church of God (of Anderson, Indiana), and hosts activities that feature Willow Creek megalo-church's Association. Not to say that God is Left or Right of some theological/political/social divide, but that the people who organize religious activities have certain inevitable biases. I can't figure out where to put this church, but it's probably moderate to conservative, at least compared to me. It was definitely an interesting and entertaining experience. No adult education on Sunday, at least that I could tell. From the website, it seems there are multiple small groups. This is a good place to be an anonymous churchgoer, because it's pretty crowded and there are two contemporary services in a row.

Great Hindu temple with South Indian deities and delicious dosa!…read more In the center, there's a large statue of Sri Venkateswara or Tirupati Balaji, which is another form of Lord Vishnu worshipped in the South. There are a handful of deities that are more prevalent in the North like Ganesha, Hanuman, Durga, etc. Even though I'm North Indian, I enjoy coming to the temple and worshipping all the deities. There's a wonderful cafeteria downstairs with scrumptious masala dosas, warm tea, and some other apps. There's a great Deepavali annual celebration with fireworks and puja for a few days along with a special Thali and other types of food offered during the festivities. There are events at the temple which you can easily find online. The Thali is a bit different than a traditional Thali with a ginormous Puri, which is more like a Batura, the dhal/kitcheri was quite tasty. The channa chick peas were a bit undercooked and the rice had a spicy kick! While the Thali was fun to try, I'd stick to the Masala Dosas. The heated tile floor downstairs will keep your feet nice and warm. Don't forgot to bring socks for sanitation/hygiene in the bathrooms. My favorite local Hindu temple and always look forward to returning for some worship and dosa!

Inside the temple across the main section, there a small murti. To go to that murti, you have to go along the railing. It is Janmashtami and my mom went there to pay her respect. As she was walking along the railing, this pujari shouted at the top of his lungs that that area is closed. It was extremely disrespectful. My mom came back and I confronted this pujari about his rude behavior. He just kept shouting back at me "you know you are wrong". The area in question did not have any sign saying it was closed. No one could tell it was closed unless told. Even telling us politely that this area was closed would have sufficed. This so-called pujari is supposed to preach the word of god but does not have a clue how to have a word with another human respectfully. It was an utterly disappointing experience from the last person you would think in a temple. Shameful!! To be fair, the temple itself was clean and beautiful.

We've attended their Easter Helicopter Egg Drop for the third year, this year. It's an overcrowded event held on the NOVA Manassas campus. There are too many children racing and parents getting in the way of kids getting to the Easter eggs. They have lots of volunteers and people directing traffic. But, the crowd control with the kids was out of hand this Easter and my child got lost in the mad rush for the eggs. They make the kids wait sooo long until they can run across the field. Check in begins at 10 am (which is quick and painless). The drop is supposed to start at 11 am. The helicopter doesn't appear until much later and then has to make many passes over the field. The kids rushed the field too soon after waiting so long and my child was separated from us. There isn't a plan in place for situations like this. We were next to another child that was separated from his family. He was older than our 4-year old and he was less anxious. Eventually we found our child (because of yelling her name and it might have been mentioned over the bullhorn (that you can't understand when spoken through)). The other kid was taken by a police man up and down the crowd to look for his family. After three years of long waits and now the lack of procedure, this will be our last egg drop. And it was so cool - to watch this helicopter drop the eggs. It must cost the church a fortune.
