When you walk into this place you feel as if your back I'm time and as you explore you feel as if your the lord or lady of the manor. The place has beautiful vaulted ceilings and amazing character. My gf and I went here for a candle lit concert and it was fabulous. The small group was very intimate and the music echoed perfectly through the room. The windows are a little drafty due to age but wow what an amazing time. As you walked around it was very dimly lit and the candles formed a perfect ambiance for romance. The place itself along with the violins, viola, and cello made the evening romantic. The staff was friendly and happy to help and the artists were fabulous. read more

The bride had a room in Hotel 340, which is the upper floors of the building. It was clean and well maintained, this is an old historic building after all! The ceremony was on the main floor in the lobby. All the chairs were covered, and a wall of white fabric surrounded us. Absolutely stunning. Then we were sent to the second floor where the bar was. The walls were all paneled, and you could just see the wealthy old men sitting in overstuffed leather chairs smoking cigars. The dining area and dance floor was impeccably set up.The food was catered by a private company, so I won't cover that here. The serving staff was professional and fast. Everything was perfect! I came here for a friend's wedding. And let me tell you this place is so beautiful. I love everything about it from the entrance door, to the balcony and bar. The details on the ceilings, wall and floor makes you feel like your in the old era. The staff was very helpful and super nice. Anyways my friends had their ceremony at the main lobby which was very beautiful, you could watch it up at the balcony too. On the third floor is where the bar and reception take place. The reception was amazingly decorated. The food was delicious too. At the end of the night we all had fun and this venue is truly a charm in St Paul. read more

This spot is one of a kind. It is HUGE and beautiful. I found everything I could have wanted and more. The weight room is set up for olympic lifting and regular weight lifting. FUN! The lap pool is gorgeous and the water is really clean. It is an adult only club which helps keep things nice. It isn't crowded, but seemed to have a lot of fun folks there doing their own thing. Imagine mustering up the will power/guts to attend yoga after a LONG hiatus. You prep and design your whole morning around it. You get to the gym, check-in, then they tell you "oh, there aren't any group fitness classes today, because Labor Day is tomorrow...". WHAT? Who cancels classes THE DAY BEFORE labor day? SPAC does. 1 star: -lack of communication about group fitness schedule, including not posting these changes on the website, or updating the phone app with information. 2 stars: -general lack of classes and lack of variety of class times. -paying for parking. -having to pay extra for various group classes. 3 stars: -location - kind of good, kind of meh. 4 stars: -fun decor. 5 stars: -super friendly staff! -pretty updated and clean! We signed up when there was a promotion, and if it weren't for that, I don't know if the gym would be worth the cost. Would probably be a great hotel to stay at or have an event at, though. So with that, I think they get 3 stars. read more

Hands down the best gym in Saint Paul. However, I must preface that by saying I have had a life altering change in my physical well-being over the last 6 months and I attribute much of this to the Saint Paul Athletic Club's warm and inviting staff and the overall atmosphere. SPAC is the first gym I have ever been excited to go to and continues to play an integral role in my "getting in the best shape of my life" objective. I started working out in February when it opened and enjoy the quiet weight room. I was 242 lbs and candidate for a heart attack. After 5 months of almost daily workouts at SPAC, I'm down to 188 and loving it! The club provides a nice serene, non-threatening space for group fitness classes and my individual workouts. The weight room is HUGE with a ton of machines and free weights. I LOVE the turf area for P90x-esque plyo/crossfit workouts. The pool is amazing and staff is uber friendly. I looked at the Y and Lifetime and settled on the more upscale SPAC environment. I was however looking to take massive action and cause massive changes in my physical condition. I was not going to the gym "to be seen" or looking for eye candy. I'd recommend SPAC to anyone who is ready to focus and make a real change for life. Parking - There is usually parking on the street within 40-60 yards of the front door. I've used the Victory Ramp (one block away and connected via the skyway) to access SPAC and it only costs $1 as a member! Cheapest parking in downtown St. Paul! Group Classes - I take the Monday and Wednesday barbell workout with Jason. Classes range from 15-25 people each time with physical ability across all ranges. Jason does a great job of showing you the modifications of each move which I took advantage of in the early months. Tuesdays and Thursdays I use the HUGE gym and there are normally around 10-25 other members there between 4:30 and 6:00. The gym is open till 10pm I believe. Word in the men's locke room is that the spin classes are killer. Have not ventured in. read more

I was traveling from Kansas City so just got a day pass to train while I was on the road so I barely scratched the surface of all the features this place offers. There is so much good stuff here! Plus I had the entire place to myself (let me qualify my 9:30 am workout). I travel to the TC once a month and this gym could be THE selling point for me to stay in St. Paul instead of Minneapolis. I didn't join this gym when it opened because they seemed to be overlooking a remodel for the women's locker room. But I've gotten over it, and I'm very happy. It's never crowded which is refreshing. As a former member of the Minneapolis Lifetime Athletic Club there are a few amenities that I miss, but I'll get over it. Pros Never crowded Wonderful pool Two running tracks Executive level locker room with lockers for rent Street parking is almost always available Cons Miss having a nice restaurant to order good healthy eating choices. Like egg whites or chicken breast and veggies. No water or vending machines No tv in executive lounge Would be nice if it was open an hour later. read more

I didn't come here for the gym, but TCFF had a screenplay reading of Junk by local writer Nickolaus Swedlund. It is my first screenplay reading, a very interesting experience. Looking at this beautiful dark wood venue, I am sure the gym and service are equally impressive. You can rent a if or small venue place for your events and there is a cash bar in the room. We parked at the Victory ramp which is only a 10 minutes walk using the skyway for $10. read more

The club itself it immaculate and beautiful (be warned though, you get an "extra" workout with all the stairs between floors). HOWEVER the parking is terrible and the skyway they are connected to feels like East LA. The Victory ramp is the only ramp SPAC can use, and if you have anything more than a Yugo it is treacherous. It looks like the ramp hasn't had any TLC since 1975, and cars are crammed in. As for the skyway, it seems to be a hangout for hoodlums and don't be surprised if you are accosted or panhandled walking to the gym. It is a great gym but in a terrible location. My fiancé and I were to be married at the St Paul Athletic club in November 2020, but with the Covid pandemic that nobody expected, it became impossible to host the wedding. While many other vendors were money-focused and took deposits, etc from us at this challenging time, the St Paul Athletic club treated us like people and met us where we were given the circumstances. They gave us a full refund with no hassle, were gracious, and wonderful to deal with. They actually care about you and not just their money. I would advise working with them. I love SPAC and have been a member for over a year. Beautiful facility, great equipment that is well-maintained. Fun classes. Because of the multi-floor setting, it's never crowded. It's kind of a maze at first since facilities are spread across several floors and their are a few different workout rooms. It's elegant - where else can you do cardio in a room with high ceilings and chandeliers? And what health club has happy hour on Thursday nights? I just hope it doesn't become TOO popular! read more

I've been working out at SPAC for over a year and a half, and it's absolutely the best place to sweat in St. Paul. If you hate crowded gyms and enjoy a beautiful peaceful ambiance to workout in, or you just like to hang out in a lovely historic building, this is your place. With 5 floors of workout facilities plus racketball and yoga studio on lower levels, even if there is a lot of people at the club, it's never crowded. I've never had to wait for a machine, as there is plenty of quality equipment available to use. I find the monthly membership rate very reasonable, especially after I get my health insurance kickback. The thing I love most about SPAC is the classes - I regularly do spin and barbell strength, and add in yoga, barre and women's warrior strength when I can. The instructors are great and classes are effective for everyone, no matter what your fitness level. Class times are convenient - I typically work out during lunch or after work. I live about 10 minutes from the club in Cathedral Hill, but there is no better place to workout in the area. Parking is never a problem, there is usually street parking open after work hours, or you can park in the Victory ramp for $1 for 2 hours or $2 for 3 hours and walk over in the skyway (3-5 min walk). read more

I've been a member for several months and absolutely love it here. Highly recommended, especially if you live or work downtown. The amenities and spaciousness make it more than worth the membership fees, and it's like night and day coming from a smaller, corporate gym like Anytime. Pros: Great equipment, much of which is new. Very clean space, lots of towels available. Good variety of classes (cycle, yoga, barre, sculpt) at convenient times, that are included within regular membership fees. Access to classes plus access to the weight rooms makes it well worth the dues. NEVER crowded. I typically go around 5:00 pm, and only encounter a few other gym-goers. I never have to wait to use equipment and always have plenty of space. Large, clean locker rooms. Cons: Somewhat short-staffed - usually only one or two people staffing the four-floor facility so security is questionable. Due to aforementioned short-staffedness, they are not great at communicating when group fitness classes are cancelled. I showed up for a class once that had been cancelled, but the person staffing the front desk didn't even know about it. read more

I've been doing my morning work-outs here for several years now and I really appreciate the facilities and the people. Joan at the front desk always has a friendly hello, the locker room is spacious and clean and they have everything you could want in terms of space and equipment. Plus it's so beautiful -- where else could you work out under chandeliers, huge windows and high ceilings? If it wasn't for the amazingly beautiful facility I'm not sure I would go 3 full stars. This gym and its sister club (university club on summit) are sadly just a hobby business for its owners. This means the club is short staffed, security is questionable and the membership fees are high. Class instructors turn over every few weeks and equipment is not maintained. A truly beautiful club with brand new equipment. However it feels more like a ghost town than a gym. If you enjoy a place to work out that is beyond quite - no music playing at all, and listening to the VERY outdated air conditioning system kick in and out this is the place for you. They did one thing right here with the new matrix equipment but obviously have not owned or managed a gym before. Don't get your hopes up to continue going to a class because they are always taking classes off the schedule. Does that mean they are about to close? Who knows. I enjoyed looking around for a while as it is gorgeous facility. The pool is amazing but you can only use it as an executive member. The Sauna and steamroom seem to always be out of order. I'd save your money and go somewhere better. read more

I have been a member of SPAC since they opened there doors a few years ago. For the most part, it is a decent gym. The equipment is your standard commercial gym stuff, which tells me the person in charge of ordering the it, especially the weight room equipment knows little or nothing about lifting weights, or perhaps the owners are just too cheap to buy and or lease better equipment. If your a casual gym goer, or afraid of picking up heavy stuff then I guess it wouldn't matter to you. One of the most troubling things to me is that some time ago they took away half of the weight room space in order to hold Crossfit classes, or what they call "Fusion"(a rose by any other name, or this case "a dumb fitness fad by any other name, would still be just as stupid ). But I digress. The gym staff is alright, but than again I'm not one of the many pampered, needy, yuppies who probably need someone to tie their shoes for them that you will find goes to this gym, and who the SPAC is really trying to cater to. Which brings me to my next point. They have to types of memberships. The "basic or standard" and "the Executive". The basic is just that, basic. Use of the swimming pool is not included with the basic membership, which I find quiet odd, since most gyms include the swimming pool as a basic amenity. I guess SPAC withholds use of the pool from it's basic members to justify the extra 40 or 50 buck a month you will pay for an Executive membership, which I guess also includes a small private weight room(nothing special, I guess this is for those who cant fathom the thought of working out around the "unwashed plebs"), free coffee, and laundry service. Me personally, I have been washing my own underwear for years now, I can make or buy my own coffee, and even though I'm not the most social person(that's why I always keep my headphones in at the gym, I'm there to put in work, not hang out, hint hint), I can handle being in the presence of others, its easy, I just ignore them, unless of course I see the a guy loading too much weight for him to handle on a bench press and damn near kill himself, which then I pause for a brief moment to laugh, think to myself "what a dumba##" then I run and help, or the Crossfitters doing their God awful "kipping pullups" which are an Orthopedic surgeon's wet dream. One last point, recently they raised the membership fees for us "basic plebs" by $10, which now makes the standard membership $96.01, including tax. However, the "Executives" fees weren't touched a bit. To be honest, this kind of burns me a bit. A letter was sent out a couple months ago to inform members of the increase, the reason being increase in operation costs, etc. etc, blah, blah, blah. Then the letter went on to talk about that SPAC's basic membership fee price is competitive with other gyms(I almost wet myself laughing when I read that). I talked to one of the staff about it and she said that the reason that the Executives didn't get a bump in their fees, was because they have to pay a $200(if I remember correctly) initiation fee when they join, which is odd, because I had to pay this fee also when I joined. Personally, I think they just needed a way to pay for operation cost increases, without pissing off the yuppies, so they decided to increase the basic membership fees to offset their costs. In other words, the basic members are not only paying for the increase in operation costs, we are paying for the Executives' fee increase as well, otherwise the increase would probably wouldn't have been as much, maybe only a couple dollars or at the most 5 bucks. I wouldn't have as much of an objection to this increase if there was some incentive down the road, like better weight equipment (maybe a hack squat, a good cable pulley setup, and some better bench press setups where the bench is not crooked, I mean if I'm paying about $100 a month, is that too much to ask for, apparently, yes it is.) The reality is that like any business, they are in business to make money, and you cant do that by spending too much money on fancy things like good weight equipment because it would cut into their profits, I mean, come on, what do I think the place is, a gym or something...oh, yeah right, it is supposed to be a gym. For anyone who may read this, please don't get me wrong, I am saying all this in good humor, although everything I have said is true. The truth is that I am paying for the convenience of having a gym in walking distance from me(I live in Downtown St Paul), and for me that's a big deal, since I work out on average 5-6 days a week. At this point, the convenience factor is what is keeps me as a member, and the fact that there isn't many other options in the area(The Skyway YMCA and Anytime fitness is even worse). Overall the SPAC is a decent gym, I've seen worse. The membership fees are far too high considering that its obvious they are not concerned with putting any money back into the place or its equipment. read more
