I had an awesome experience at this LA Fitness. I was passing through on a long road trip and just needed a place to shower before getting back on the road. Drew went above and beyond by helping me out and making me feel welcome, even though I was just passing through. The facility was clean, the staff was friendly, and Drew's kindness really made my day. It's rare to come across customer service like that anymore. I called to see if they could help me get my refund since I was double charged for this month and the person I spoke to first was very helpful and told me I would be able to receive a refund then when I called back someone else told me it was impossible even though I already paid prio, then the dude is gonna Tell me "maybe this isn't the gym for you" even though I already paid 293 dollars just to join.... My main gym is Maplewood, but I thought this one would be convenient. I knew it was bad but not this bad. The only time worth going is 5-8am so it is not packed, and even when packed, it is full of terrible gym etiquette. I am not even talking about cleaning off your machine after using it, which is overkill unless you are leaving sweat marks. But I cannot tell you how many times it would be packed and someone is using three machines at once, on opposite corners of the gym, with no phone, water bottle, towel, or headphones to even indicate the machine is in use. This is the same for people using three different sets of dumbbells while it is packed. Machines being in service for weeks at a time is to be expected, and even people being loud while working out, not a problem. However, even the basics facilities are rough. I went on a Friday and all of their water fountains were not working, no sign, and a bucket underneath one to catch a leak. I tried to fill my preworkout and a staff member told me they shut it off for the pool and he would fix it. He did not, I drank it before he came up to me and it tasted like straight chlorine. If I was a woman I would never go after 8am. The people are rough and unabashedly stare at women squatting. The no guests for basketball rule is a great addition, since the other St. Paul location (my old go-to) was shut down after countless fights and squad cars parked out front. It just sucks paying what ends up to be $35+ a month for a real gym that is not a real gym. At this point I see why people suck it up and go to planet fitness, snap, or anytime, while people who can afford it go to Los Canpeones or Lifetime. read more

I had been grandfathered in many years ago at a rate of $35 a month with one personal training session. It was a while since I've been because of a total life overhaul. In this time I had a few rough patches, and had a phone call about my payment. My understanding was that I was okay. Payments started flowing again, and I signed up for a personal training session through the app. Everything was good. I get to the location and find out I've been paying general membership the last 4 months, and there is no way to get my training back, which is the ENTIRE REASON I signed up. So I canceled. As I left one "team member" said "Thank you" as I was robbed of 70 (yes, SEVENTY) sessions. My response was "no, I should thank you" and walked out. I have been to LA fitness since 2005. I brought one of our friend to LA fitness located 1370 University Ave W, St Paul, MN 55104 to show him and introduce him to gym. The front desk referred us to one of the counselor named "Abati ". We approached him. He didn't even greet us . He said " what do guys want ". I told him that we want to introduce him to gym. He said $20 dollars right away. I asked him if he want to tell us about the members but ignore us. Then I asked for manager. He said I'm the manager. He insisted that he has to have guest pass for us to show him. I said he does have. He insisted $20 or he has to see the pass . I went to the car and got him the pass. He said not for here . I'm sure the low income neighborhood it sits in, with the Wal-Mart across the street makes you want to be cautious about joining this club and it should. In addition to the typical cleanliness issues of a lower budget club, now they stopped putting up shower curtains as someone keeps slicing them (according to the staff). This goes to show you the quality of clients that workout here. I've complained about this with other LA Fitness clubs, but their water pressure is way too low on their drinking faucets. Really disappointed that this is now the lanfitness near me. Worst in the twin cities hands down. Always very dirty. Hot tub is super gross with crust all around from the foam never being cleaned. Aggressive and rude trainers. (Trainers has got in my face mid set and moved me out of my work station becuase he needed to finish training a cute chick. Of course her money is worth more then mine right? Never been greeted in a year. (Only once or twice by the random part time person on the weekend who isn't a regular employee) Very outdated and some rusty equipment. Dirty, dusty, mats never clean, always human hair and sweat everywhere. Bad neighborhood Bad vibes. Certain cultures literally use hot tub as a bath tub. Same guy in a sweatsuit goes and washes his armpits there every day. Rules are not enforced. The planet fitness in Roseville makes this place look like crap. I'd rather drive the extra 10 mins and go to planet. It's clean, good vibe and their employees are actually good at their job. They say hi and have a good workout literally every time. Call me crazy, but when shopping around for gyms it's probably best not to come off as an arrogant, know it all, argumentative pain when trying to get someone to join. Mr. membership advisor ruined that. However, the young man who gave us a tour was excellent. Personable, knowledgeable, friendly and embodied all the laudable skills I find in a *sales* person. Would have probably considered joining if he had not needed approval from the advisor. I remember telling him that they should switch roles. He agreed and said a lot of people have had issues with the membership guys attitude. The gym itself seemed alright. Had everything we were looking for: Pool, nice locker rooms, equipment, close to home etc.. We ended up joining LifeTime Fitness DT which has since closed. I realize now that it's probably best to drag our ourselves outside for no membership fee during the summer and use the local pools. They have tons of cardio equipment, which is mostly what I do, fun group classes that are well-attended, their pool is warm and usually empty, locker rooms are clean, and staff is nice. It's way overpriced for what you get they try to talk you in the buying everything and they make you pay the first and last months bill the initiation or start up fee is $100 and then you're paying like 50 bucks for those two months I will admit I kind a got suckered into buying this I came in with a flyer that said I get six months free no contracts but that was for their highest priced plan at $500 so I would be paying $500 after six months now I should've just walked out and left but I ended up paying for the cheapest one if you could call it that now I went there for two weeks I have encountered four situations that I have reported me and my friends were working out and some old creepy guy kept talking to us asking our sexual orientation we reported him after he refused to leave us alone(I'm 17 she's 18) One time I got followed around the gym and to the gym by this guy who refused to leave me alone from following me from the train There is a worker that is still currently employed there he was being very creepy when I first signed up for this program staring at my chest etc. you'll get a much better value just going to the YMCA honestly for 200 bucks you would probably get a full year at the YMCA if you sign up as a low income family... overall the facility itself is nice the pool in the hot tub is nice and clean but it's super overpriced even though I told them I'm low income and I probably can't afford this also on the flyer it said I would get a $20 rebate per month which I didn't receive I wouldn't recommend going here unless you're making big bucks there's way better gyms I suggest planet fitness or the YMCA sorry if my review was all over the place I was writing it as everything came to my head read more

The clientele leaves trash and weights all over the place (there's a fingernail on the ground today by one of the seated cable row machines). The clientele has zero respect for the facilities or other gym-goers. The staff is completely apathetic and allows this behavior and state of constant filth in the gym. The equipment is dated, ventilation is not great. They could use some ceiling fans to help with the heat in the gym, after all, everyone is sweating after a workout. I only gave two stars because the Zumba and yoga classes make up for it. The Zumba instructors are amazing and I love their routines to the songs. The pool is clean. Not a bad gym for the money, with a decent array of machines and weights. Some the equipment is getting old and could use some maintenance; some of the machines are actually showing signs of rust - which isn't a huge surprise given it's a hot, humid environment, but they could stand to deal with it. As someone else mentioned, the prices are wildly inconsistent. I'd wait until some of the early-year specials, with teaser rates and no "initiation fee" (no reason to pay that if you don't have to). Some people have complained about the customer service; it's spotty, and depends on the staffer you talk with; some are wonderful, and some have all the personality of refrigerator mold. However, they will try to hard-sell you on the personal training. You can find much better trainers than what's on offer here. Just say no.  Some other writers complain about the neighborhood. This part of the Midway is a little downmarket, but not as bad as some have made it out to be. However, there can be the occasional aggressive panhandler in the parking lot. Be aware of your surroundings. The biggest problem, though, is some of the clientele. A few months ago, the shower curtains in the men's locker started getting systematically ripped and cut to pieces by...someone. Who? No idea. But for months, the gym would replace the curtains - only to have them ripped or torn to pieces within a day or two. Whoever is doing this is apparently pretty OCD about it; one morning there'd be a full complement of new curtains; two days later, you'd come in and they'd be cut up, ripped off, gone. The gym has basically stopped trying to keep up with the vandal; there are no shower curtains, ever, anymore in the men's locker. It's annoying as hell, realizing there's someone that sick and creepy hanging around there, and there's apparently nothing anyone can do about it. There are other LAs in the area that are in better shape (Roseville). This one's nice for me, personally, because I can jump on the Green Line right outside and be at work downtown in 20 minutes. I gave myself a day to try to calm down after the absolutely horrendous experience I had at this LA Fitness. This is my review tempered by time. Imagine what it would have been like immediately after the experience as you read it. My husband and I were ready to join a gym. Actually, we walked into LA Fitness ready to join THAT gym after doing a lot of online research and visiting a few other gyms that day. But one does not join a gym blindly. It's a commitment/investment--and an expensive one at that--so one wants to take a look at the facility before signing on. Let me just say--the first guy we dealt with was wonderful. His name was Tim. He took us on a tour. He was extremely helpful and friendly. I want to apologize to Tim and maybe send him cookies or something because, um, Tim? Your "manager" lost you your sale. You had it in the bag. Seriously. We were ready to sign on that day. The facilities looked great. The gym was a hive of activity on a Saturday afternoon. The equipment looked fine. There were a few things that looked better than some of the other gyms we'd seen. There were a few things I didn't like as much as some other gyms we had seen, but I was willing to adjust or acclimate. Or at least give it a shot with a trial membership before dismissing or giving in to my concerns. (I.e. cardio equipment is VERY social/all bunched together. No hope of a private run here, ever!) We went through the whole sales pitch. We were excited. And then we asked if they offered a trial membership. Tim had to go "get his manager" and that's when the sleezy used car sales experience started. Not only did the manager start to quote prices that were different (higher) than the website OR the advertised specials, but he was clearly going for the "hard sell". He asked us what other gyms we were looking at. When we told him, neutrally, he started bashing the other gyms. I.e. Their rates are so high because you're subsidizing child care for other people. You don't want KIDS in your gym, do you? Imagine all their filth in your pool! What he didn't know, of course, was that I had asked Tim if they offered swimming lessons (they don't). Because I can't swim. So I wouldn't be using their pool anyway. It wasn't a sticking point--each gym had their benefits and detriments and this wasn't a huge deal to me--but it was a case of the manager being aggressive and adversarial in the sales process. But I digress. That's merely one anecdote. There were other, ruder things. It was definitely a "hard sell" situation. He started harping about the prices at the other places; how LA Fitness was "so much cheaper" (even though, in the end, it actually wasn't...I mean, it was online, but not for this great "deal" he was giving us). I eventually said point-blank that price was not what I was concerned about; I was more concerned about the EXPERIENCE of the place and whether I liked it or not...hence why we wanted to try it out. I'm the kind of person who WILL pay more for a great, consistent experience. And yet he kept harping on about price and having the indignity of kids and old people in our presence at another gym. (WTF?) Tim, poor guy, actually put his head in his hands as the sale was slipping away. It's a pity. We actually still kinda like the gym. But we're going to pay an extra $20 a month to go to another gym that might have a pool "tainted" by the presence of someone under the age of 18 because the staff actually showed us around, didn't give us the high-pressure, sleezy, used-car-salesman sell, didn't insult our intelligence, and was actually friendly. Because even though I really would love to workout at LA Fitness I honestly could not imagine having to walk in the door and be in that kind of environment in any way ever, ever, ever again. It's a bit like PTSD; I cannot overstress how big a jerk the "manager" was to us and I just cannot deal with that when I'm trying to work out. I really, really, really never want to see him again in any context. After this experience I went and read some of the other Yelp reviews. Um. As it turns out I am not alone in this EXACT situation. Major, major fail, LA Fitness. I'm not usually a bad-service blabbermouth--I'm about as Minnesota-ignore-bad-service as you can get--but I will be spreading the word on this one. I was set on joining LA Fitness before I even walked into the building because I work nearby. The price was also right (per their website) and since I play a lot of racquetball it's actually a great deal. Yet somehow, the sales staff member I met with managed to make me feel disrespected to the point that I don't even want to join anymore. After my 'test workout' he could gave me the outline of membership options. When I asked about the "no initiation fee" offer I found on the website he confirmed that it was being offered but decided to give me an "even better deal" by paying a $49 initiation fee for $10 off the normal monthly charge. The only catch was that I had to act immediately (they offered a 3 day return on the deal). I considered it but told him I needed to wait for my existing membership to end and wanted to think about it. He amped up the pressure but I politely declined again. He took everything off the table (literally), condescendingly said "OK fine then, have a nice night" and turned toward his computer waiting for me to get up and leave. He even took back his sheet with pricing options that he had written. I didn't realize that selling gym memberships is now akin to selling used cars, but I'm still blown away that he was able to make me reconsider. If I do end up joining, I will join at another branch because there is no way I'm giving that jerk credit for the sale. This gym has terrible service and it has a distinctive smell. The people at the front desk have this "I'm better than you" attitude. Every time we say hi or bye to them they just have this blank stare and never acknowledge you. They are also not very accommodating. There has been multiple times while playing racquetball that the heaters have turned on in the room? We asked them to turn it off and they just flatly said, "No," offering no explanation of any kind. That's absurd. I hope i have a heat stroke in there some time so i can sue the place. It's ridiculous. Not to mention the people that go to this gym. Jesus christ. While most of them seem like normal people getting a workout in at the gym, some of the people there are the WEIRDEST people. For example, there's this really super skinny guy there who often thinks he's a trainer. He'll literally come over to you to "teach" you how to work out and use the machines properly. I'm sorry but if i was going to be learning from anyone, it's definitely not going to be from a guy who is scrawnier than me with chicken legs. No thanks. And then yesterday while i was working out my shoulders the guy sitting on the machine next to me doing nothing starts talking to us about how that is way too much weight for me, even he couldn't do it. I looked at him and was like, WTF? I ignored him while he continued to talk to us for a good solid 4 minutes about how it's too much weight for me. OMG. So overall to fully utilize the gym, just ignore all the weirdos and the staff altogether and you'll be fine. read more

Typical mid-price gym with horrible staff. High pressure sales and inconsistent prices (I know people who pay anywhere from $20-40/month, with 0-99$ join fees, so don't let them screw you over). Trainers and membership people walk the floor and WILL interrupt your workouts to sell you overpriced training sessions or ask to annoy your friends with sales pitches (even if you're wearing headphones). Equipment is out of order more than it should be. Frequent theft from the locker room. Seriously for a better gym at a lower price, I'd head to Planet Fitness. Location and health insurance requirements are the only thing keeping me here for the moment. Once I forgot my gym bag and called right away when I got home (45 min commute away). The staff didn't seem to care but said someone would check the locker room. When I got there 45 min later, my bag was sitting in the locker room, and my new $120 running shoes, plus $300 in supplements and headphones were gone. The staff could have helped and prevented the theft. They seriously don't care at all. If you're a typical 'bro' jock (or spend thousands/year on their incompetent trainers), the staff will give you high fives when they see you. read more

I am a member of LA Fitness and thankfully I can work out at any of the other LA Fitness's in the area because this location has lost it. The gym itself is overrun on the weekends with people under 18 (more like 12-15 year old's), which is disheartening since I was told when I joined 18+ only. If they are there with parents, you wouldn't know because the kids are playing in the pool and hot tub without parental supervision. The gym also has a number of people who go there who don't get it, meaning they attempt to go in the hot tub with anything from jeans to 'whitey tighty' underwear. While management shouldn't have to patrol this, they need to. It happens ALL the time and has lead to heated exchanges when customers tell people "no jeans in the hot tub" etc. Finally the place does not seem clean or safe, they've removed all the shower curtains in the show, the free-weights are frequently strewn about everywhere and too many people think the weight machines are lounge chairs. Again, customers should know better however since they don't at this location management needs to step up and monitor these things. These problems seem mostly with this location, while no gym is perfect, this gym seems to not care about anything. read more

Poor service at night. Female employee screaming in the locker rooms before closing while male employees who could remind guests about closing policies hang out at their desks up front. I complained about being screamed at while packing up before their actual closing time. Management is not responsive to complaints in any way. I think asking female employees to not scream at customers and to not enter the mens locker room unnecessarily is a very basic request. The manger I talked to tried to rush me away from his desk so he cold go back to his email. I checked with the front desk today about a item I left in the locker room. She said they throw anything that might be wet away immediately. She cited health regulations that require them to do this. I pressed this issue and she admitted it was just their policy. I asked them to consider just putting things in a plastic back for 48 hours so their customers could retrieve them. She said I would have to tell a manager but they were busy. I asked for a business card to email the manager. She said managers do not have business cards or email. She said I should try calling to see when they were free. All around poor service over easy things they could fix. They just need to try harder. Some employees are very nice and courteous but it seems like they have managers who are not responsive. They spend all of their time trying to close sales on new members. If you join check out another location and join there. Make sure you are okay going to somewhere other than this location. I'd also try to talk down any joining fee because if you need to cancel it is only your loss. The general maintenance at this location is lacking also. Moldy tile in the showers and dirty smelly bathrooms. Towel and sanitizer dispensers upstairs are empty nearly every evening. read more

This location is far closer to where I live than the location I usually go to, but after giving it a couple of chances, I'll never be back. How is this the worst LA Fitness location I have yet to experience in the Twin Cities? Let me count the ways: 1. A single harried woman wrangling 20+ children in the childcare, including half a dozen infants and always at least one kid who is clearly way too sick to be around other kids--poor woman! I don't feel comfortable leaving my kids there. That alone would be a dealbreaker. 2. Filthy mats all in a single disorganized pile in the room where the workout classes are held. No stack of clean mats anywhere to be found. 3. A Bodyworks class instructor who is (A) unintelligible and (B) impossible to follow. She doesn't seem to actually enjoy her job at all. I literally walked out midway through the class. 4. Similarly filthy weightlifting area, with stuff strewn about, equipment that looks like it's never/rarely cleaned. No. Avoid. It's worth the longer drive to the cleaner and more pleasant Roseville location. read more

No one should complain about gyms. You enter, find your machine, workout, sweat, clean it, and leave. Wah-Lah. It's a very individual process. Not many other people should be involved. Unless you make them. I go to this gym everyday, and it has everything I need. The cardio equipment is never full, I can always find a parking space (sometimes I have to walk farther, but hey, more exercise) and the free weight section is never full. Not to mention the always abundant amount of muscle men. :-) Yes, there are people who play soccer in the racquetball court. The class instructor's are sometimes late. And according to the most recent (completely not branded) posters strewn about, this location is having an issue with guests and the basketball court. Doesn't involve me, so I read the signs, cringe at the writing done in a purple and green sharpie, and continue on with my day. No, Lifetime transplants, they don't have towels. Get over it. "You need to take care of yourself, before you can take care of others"....being a nurse this is the advice I often hear but rarely give heed to. A membership at LA is my recent effort of taking care of numero uno. I already have a membership at a yoga studio, and it was hard to muster additional commitment to become a member elsewhere. It wasn't until I discovered the $29.99/month special and $64 for the first and last month (no sign up fees) that I caved in. The little devil on my shoulder had a persuasive argument, "Do you really want to pay any more money, is this yet another unnecessary expense?" My little angel won when I realized I blow $30 more often than I should without thinking on all my bad habits (ie: overeating, drinking, and compulsive shopping). So far I don't regret my decision. The midway location is convenient for me. Despite it being quite busy, I've never had a problem getting onto the machines/using the equipment I want. I'm easily intimidated by the amount of people and the fact some are more focused on checking fellow members out than their own work-outs. However, all is easily zoned out once on the elliptical with my choice of tv, music, or book/magazine. Recommendations: bring a lock, be patient when trying to find a parking spot, come early if you want to go a spin class, bring your own towel, and last but not least don't park too close to Leann Chin. The aromas of peking chicken and cream cheese wontons are just plain dangerous after getting your fitness on. read more

On the whole, the facility lacks basic service, which causes it to fall below expectations. The men's locker room has a curious cheesy odor that never seems to dissipate, probably due to the carpeting. The restroom is horrendously dirty - a mix of body hair, paper towels, mysterious liquids and dirty foot prints everywhere. Customer service is not a strong suit. Sign up was easy enough, but staff are few and far between, although the front desk staff are usually very kind. There is just an overall sense of not caring, from the signs that literally advertise Club Name Volleyball Tournament to the lack of effort on upkeep. The equipment is fine, and it's a plus for me that the swimming pool is relatively underutilized, which generally means no wait. If it weren't for the price and convenient location, I would likely look elsewhere. read more

Overall a nice club. Pros: Gym is ok and has many options for weight machines. Some of the cardio machines are dated. Pool is excellent for swimming and pool area is very clean. I joined LA Fitness about 3 months ago after being a longtime Bally's member. LA Fitness is much cleaner, has more equipment, and the locker rooms are better then Bally. I agree that it's easy getting on equipment, even during the busy times. The fees are reasonable. I went to the Rosville location today and someone got on an elliptical machine right next to me when there were several others available. Other then that, Roseville is just as nice. read more

I believe exceptional customer service is what distinguish the business apart from all the other businesses. I would pay a bit more to be served well. HOWEVER this place failed at that. Omar Hussein, the GM at LA Fitness Midway, is the rudest person to be serving customers. I was looking for a fitness club to join, and I saw the 3-day guest pass available to try the club. I also wanted to bring couple of my friends, so we all got the passes. To redeem the passes, my friends and I sat down with Omar, and he asked to see the IDs. My friends, who are from a different state and attend school here didn't have MN issued license. Omar rejected to get the passes, saying the policy is that you have to have a MN issued ID. When getting the passes online, that policy was shown NOWHERE. He showed me a printed policy that was on his desk, that said "provide a state issued ID" and "to verify address". I pointed out that the policy doesn't state a MN ID - it is just saying a state issued ID, so I could just show you a different state issued ID. He said he has to verify the address. I then said you can verify the address with a bill statement, etc. During the conversation, he was very rude with terrible etiquette. He even said "what do you want me to do?" At this point, I had to get up and leave. I would never come back here even if they give me free membership. read more

This gym is just ok (as many have said). The price is great so I will over look some things as a result. Pros: I mostly go here for the classes. I love cycle and body works. Almaz is my hands down favorite cycle instructor I have ever had (at any gym). Honestly most of my rating goes to Almaz. There are plenty of weight and cardio machines so there is never an issue with waiting. Additionally the free weight area is huge. An extra bonus is that it is very convenient for me to get to with a large parking lot and right off the greenline there is no excuse to not go. I have not had a chance to try out the Juice Bar, but I love that the option is there. I'm very likely going to treat myself one of these days. Cons: My biggest complaint about the place is that the pool/spa area is pretty revolting. I rarely swim here (since it seems there is always a aqua fit class going on) so that isn't a huge deal to me. The showers could also use a deep clean as well. Hair and mildew in them. I get in and out of the shower as quickly as possible. All in all its a good gym for the price. Very affordable! **I have to drop my rating because Almaz is no longer there and as I said most of my review was for her. I'll leave it at 2 stars since I have had even worse experiences at other LA locations (theft form locker room). read more

Overall a good place to work out; however, someone keeps ripping out the shower curtains in the mens shower area. I have complained to Stephanie (the club's GM) she is either too busy to speak with me or intentionally ignores me; regardless, months have gone by with no resolution to the curtain situation. If you value privacy then scratch this location off your list. read more

One of the best decisions I've made in a long time was joining this gym. People do their thing, stay out of your way, and it's a well rounded gym. I never wait for equipment, I find the place pretty clean, not pristine, but better than other gyms I've belonged to in the past. The second best decision I've made was to sign up for personal training sessions. I'm averaging about twice a week...and I am booking my appointments with Steve. Steve sets very challenging but achievable goals within the appointment and I always leave with a sense of accomplishment. A month in, I'm already seeing visible results, but more importantly, I feel stronger and believe I am making headway with my fitness and health goals. Steve has also helped in making exercise modifications for injuries/problematic joints (i.e. I've had 3 knee surgeries but he's found ways to still get me using those muscles without causing further discomfort/problems). What can I say, I feel good! This was such a no brainer...my only regret is that I should have joined sooner. read more

I used to be a member at LifeTime Fitness until their dues started going through the roof. L.A. Fitness is just a small step beneath them, but the dues are nearly half as much. I pay $35 a month. This location is always clean, the employees are always nice and I am always able to get a machine (though I do go in at an "off" time in the middle of the afternoon). I've been to Edina as well, and it's just as good. read more
