Updating my review as I have been here several times now and it has easily become one of my favorite restaurants. The service from my first experience has increased tremendously. My most recent visit was for my birthday last month. Its hard celebrating being away from family and friends but the staff truly made me feel special. They went above and beyond to always check up on me and make sure I was enjoying the entire evening. I even chatted with one of the waitresses for awhile during one of the slow periods which made for a very lovely dinner. I decided to get the Také No Hana for my birthday. There were so many courses that I barely finished all my food. My favorites definitely were the nori crisps, hiramasa kingfish, and miso caramelized 'glacier 51' toothfish. All of the flavors, seasonings, sauces and ingredients were so perfectly put together. Fantastic experience and amazing service during the visit. Also a tip - if you're driving up from Gold Coast you can park near Kangaroo Point and take the free boat over to Eagle St Pier to avoid the pricey parking. read more

When I was up in Brisbane, I was told by a fellow blogger that Sake was THE restaurant to try! Having a Sake in Sydney and yet, not having visited it, I thought 'Yeah, you are SO right!' and thus, we headed off to Eagle St :) I am not by ANY means an adventurous Japanese cuisine devourer. Yes, I am a devourer, Just not adventurous. But my friends? They loved everything and anything on the menu! You know why Sake clicked? Because it TOTALLY delivered for both of us! A menu with a full range of exquisite, intricate and innovative dishes that were reasonably priced for a fine dining establishment! That came as an unexpected and pleasant surprise! Furthermore, the service was impeccable - no fumbling waiters dropping drinks on you, or grizzly waiters getting your order wrong! A polite single waiter who was given our table, with SO much knowledge about the menu so he could cater to any questions or dietary concerns - a sign of fantastic service and going that extra notch forward! The food was brilliant. It really lived up to the reputation of Sake as a contemporary Japanese restaurant because while using traditional flavours, Sake put its own twist on it! For instance, I ordered the Vegetarian sashimi and instead of the usual little rolls I am so used to, I got small packed balls of rice drenched in soy sauce and eggplant flavour, or topped with pickled radish and spring onion, or a giant mushroom top carved into a flower! The meals were also very hearty and generous in serving, there was no skimping on the amount of broth or meat served, nor in the vegetables, which I find is common in fine dining. The smaller the meal, the more exquisite, but here, it is exquisite in large numbers :) A few honourable mentions according to my friends? The Popcorn Shrimp (with a spicy creamy dipping sauce of the gods) and the Waygu Terrine - just a tip for when you shall undoubtedly visit! read more

Having been there before, I knew how busy the city gets on a Friday before St Paddy's Day weekend. So I used the online booking system to book a table for the night for my husband's birthday. I put 'could we get a special table as it's my hubby's birthday' on the booking and when we arrived lo' and behold we were ushered into what seemed like a VIP private room in a super packed restaurant. We felt like Beyonce and JayZ, was this what it was like to feel like a celebrity? There must be some mistake. If there was, we were keeping our mouths shut, because it beats sitting out there with the heathen locals damnit! We ordered the Panko Pork cutlets, Seaweed Salad and Salt and Pepper Tofu to taste as entrees and the beef and assorted tempura to share as mains. Sparkling water of course! You can't cheapskate out now! We have the VIP table! Yelp! I was so excited. The food tasted fresh, came out fast and the service was excellent. The texture in the Panko pork was interesting with the tomato salsa and mayonnaise... because I expected it to taste like a firm cutlet, but it was diced finely and deep fried so the inside was still mushy when you bit into the crispy outside. What delicate flavour... hope it was cooked. I have to say I've seen this a few times now, but more and more restaurants are adapting their online booking systems, and they are fantastic. Not only can you request a booking at a time when the place isn't open, they reply straight away and you are more likely to get your table. Sake is a modern Japanese restaurant with great cocktails and a fun city vibe. Come to Sake expecting perfectly prepared Sushi and an ample selection of share plates to choose from. Went here for after work drinks and dinner on Friday night. The food was average, not outstanding but the service made up for that. The waitress was fab. Attentive, happy to discuss options and recommendations very friendly staff but not over the top. The food was nice, but not the best sushi to date and 2 of my choices were no longer available. Chicken satay was very average. The scallop and salmon sushi was chewy and very uneven portion sizing (which isn't an issue just odd as sushi is usually so precise and presentation is usually much better). The Chocolate cake with Berry sorbet was particularly good though and worth mentioning! Will I come back?? Hmmmm; perhaps just for drinks and a snack. But won't be rushing back. read more

In a city that is full of Japanese eateries it can be difficult to find a standout, but it has been found. Saké. Looking over the Eagle Street Pier dining precinct in a slightly secluded location next to the Bavarian Bier Cafe, Saké offers a modern insight to the wonderful world of Japanese cuisine. This is immediately noticeable from the elaborate furnishings which comprise a mixture of a bar with typical high table and bench seating, restaurant table seating, a handful of sunken group tables with cushion seating and bar-style seating around the kitchen. The walls and ceiling throughout are graciously filled with Japanese artefacts and artwork. Even the food menu follows the theme with its folded square design, mimicking origami. The menu itself consists of a range of traditions and modern Japanese dishes. There is a selection of the staple sushi and sashimi, tataki, teriyaki, tempura and yakitori along with some creative touches like tuna belly, tonkatsu cups, stuffed quail and popcorn shrimp - an absolute must as an appetiser. A couple of tasting menus with popular options cater for those who cannot choose from the mammoth array of food on offer. On this visit I ordered the popcorn shrimp, wagyu new-style with ginger, chives and yuzu soy, yellowfin tuna belly with edamame & jalapeño purée, sautéed shiitake mushrooms, asparagus spears and nori dressing and steamed prawn dumplings with spicy ponzu. This sounds like a lot of food but the popcorn shrimp the wagyu new-style are starters designed to share. The juicy shrimp, the melt-in-your-mouth wagyu strips and the succulent tuna, it all came together in a sensational, flavour abundant dining experience. The dumplings were particularly notable with the creative use of a nest of thin noodles as their skin. Service was spot on with attentive and polite waitstaff. With exception to the popcorn shrimp, the remaining dishes all arrived together which was a little surprising at the time, but due to the portion sizes and styles of dishes this wasn't a problem. Update- Nowhere near as good anymore. Had an issue with seating and rushed service. Gone is the glorious multi-coloured seaweed salad and even though we had 8 dishes none of then were anywhere near as good as before. Also bare in mind there is no view at night unless you are near front of restaurant as unlike other restaurants on river, Sake is set back and enclosed. As a lunch place (good sushi) sitting near the front with a great daytime view it was great (lunch pricing was better) but for dinner its about what you would expect but nothing more. Then they charged 2% on any card even if you said to put it on savings!!! What a rude way to end a meal!! Old review- Best japanese in Australia? Factor in the river view, deduct the waitress who needed a personality transplant, add the fact they served at 3pm and the answer is yes, due to great food! read more

Sashimi delight! Thought I would check out a bit of what Brisbane had to offer in regards to more refined dining experiences and saw that Sake was a decent offering if you are in the mood for Japanese. This is one of the better Japanese places near the CBD and when you enter you are greeted with a hearty "Irasshaimase" meaning ''Welcome" from the chefs behind the bar. We managed to get a table for our group without a fuss and without a prior booking. They led us straight to our table and explained the menu and the daily specials. The meals are all served with the purpose of sharing which makes this place great for groups of all sizes. We ended up ordering several dishes. We started with Beef Tetaki and Blue Fin Tuna Sashimi (a special on that night). The Tetaki hit the spot and the Blue Fin Tuna was an offering of 3 different cuts starting out least fatty to the most fatty cut. This was exceptional. For a mains course we decided on the Miso Barramundi with Japanese Mushrooms and Seaweed Salad as accompanying dishes. The flavours were all spot on with the Barramundi being a standout dish. For desert we chose two dishes. We decided on Watermelon five ways which included a lime infused with watermelon juice (another special on that night) and a Chocolate Fondant with a white sesame ice cream. AMAZING! If you're prepared to part with $100 (per head), you couldn't find a better place to do it than at Saké Restaurant. This really is modern Japanese at its finest. Dining in a group of 8, we had one couple choose all the starters and mains with the help of the extremely knowledgeable waitress assigned to our table. It's a shared styled of eating at Saké, which means you get to taste a little bit of everything. Stand-out starters were the Tuna Tasting Plate, Popcorn Shrimp and the Miso-Barra Lettuce Cups. After all the delicious starters, my taste buds had been tantalised enough and I really could have skipped mains and gone to dessert. Nevertheless, the Ocean Trout was pretty amazing, as was the Beef Sirloin. For dessert I had the Chocolate Fondant, a warm chocolate pudding served with sesame ice-cream. Yum. The perfect end to an amazing meal. The drinks menu boasts an extensive selection of not only the restaurant's name-sake, saké, but also wines, beers and cocktails. As newbies to the world of Japanese cuisine, our waitress chose for us some different types of saké to try. This restaurant has all areas of the dining experience covered--food, service and ambiance. The blend of house-made syrups and infused shochus are mixed, muddled and shaken together to create a Japanese-influenced concoction. Utilising fresh ginger, lemongrass, Maraschino-infused shochu and lime juice, the Ginger Ninja is one refreshing cocktail you cannot go past. The 13 page drinks menu gives you a taste for Japan - from cocktails to sake bombs (select a sake, drop it into a beer, consume). Shochu can be paired with fresh purees such as passionfruit and mixed berries, then topped with soda. If you get lost choosing the best umeshu (plum wine) or sake, never fear, as a sake sommelier is on hand to help you through the menu. Feeling peckish? Overall had a nice time, but it doesn't feel as authentic as I expected. It is more of a pricey fusion restaurant where the wait staff knows it's an expensive place and it feels a little stuffy, but the customer service is not necessarily A+. Nothing bad, but just not A+ because I didn't feel like I belonged there - everything felt a little uptight and it felt like wanted someone richer than me in there. The interior design is beautiful and a little intimidating. The octopus was very tender and maybe the second best octopus I've had, but it was coated in this weird powder that I can't identify that I didn't like. So you're a regular sushi eater and list Japanese as one of your favourite cuisines? Do you enjoy fine dining with a respectable price tag? Then let me guide you to Saké Restaurant on Brisbane's riverside. This isn't just a restaurant, it is a dining experience. From the whole-of-restaurant staff greeting as you enter the restaurant to the mention from your waitress that "the chef likes to serve dishes in random order so you might get your entree first or your main." Did I mention it is also home to one of Brisbane's largest and most renowned Saké collections? No? Well it is. The rare thing is there is nothing I could fault from our dinner at Saké. The service, the food, the atmosphere and overall experience: exquiste. The Mister in the picture, of course, thought the meal portions could be bigger but he's a "typical aussie bloke" and didn't take into consideration that all Sake's meals are designed to be shared. And share we did. The sashimi tacos with sake shot (a must do just for the flavour explosion in your mouth), teriyaki pork belly skewers, Miso-marinated grilled barramundi, and as hard as it is to select a standout favourite, the beef sirloin cooked medium-rare and served on sauteed onions & japanese mushrooms. This is hands down, without question the best beef I have ever had the pleasure of eating. It melts in your mouth. And before you say, "Oh Saké, it is too expensive", let it be known that yes while it is more than your average two sushi hand rolls it is when you consider the quality being served before you darn great value. read more

Had a work dinner here and we were in the private dining room around the back. This venue is quite nice on Eagle Street Pier. We had the set menu and although the quality of the food was good, it seemed to take forever to come out. Not exactly what a group of men needed after flying in from around the country for a work conference. Portion sizes were small and I dare say there were a few members of the group who left still hungry. Saké is another restaurant that has left me a little perplexed. Many a time I've enjoyed a boozy lunch at Saké, with great, fast, fresh food and enjoying the fact that it's a little bit more upmarket (but not unreasonably priced) than your regular lunch haunts. But, I've also been at dinner in small groups, and had rather disappointing experiences. Most staff are generally very polite and helpful, but there is one fairly senior "lady" who I've watched think she's being cleverly snarky to people on a number of occasions, thinking she's really clever and that they don't know it. Well, they do. And it's her loss in tips. Anyway. The key to being vegan here is - asking questions, making your own mind up, and not letting them plan for you. The cuisine is Japanese, so, sadly dashi broth (containing fish) is often liberally used. And egg sneaks in a couple of unexpected places. But enough dishes on the menu are vegan, or can be easily veganised. Sadly though, when a group us went for dinner, they insisted on creating a special menu for us that was so very small, and so very disappointing. My menu picks are the crispy fried salt and pepper tofu with chilli and spring onion, the mushroom salad, and the absolutely delicious nasu dengaku (miso glazed eggplant). Not the sort of thing that's going to satisfy a huge appetite, but delicious nonetheless. The anticucho sauce on vegetable skewers is also pleasant, though I'd really prefer something a bit heartier. If you're feeling brave - the seaweed salad can also be prepared vegan-style, and is quite an interesting experience. Cocktails tend to be hit and miss - sometimes absolutely delicious, sometimes rather poorly mixed, and often lacking in decent amounts of alcohol. But a pleasant experience nonetheless! read more

This is by far the best Japanese (new style) restaurant in Brisbane. It was awarded One Star and Two Wine Glasses by the Australian Gourmet Traveler and more recently named Best New Restaurant in Brisbane/Southern Queensland at the Savour Australia Restaurant & Catering Awards for Excellence for 2011. Oh your still reading...well I don't know why...Its the best ok? Trust me. Well...alright I will give you a little more to wet your appetite. Sake is situated in a fantastic spot on eagle street with wonderful views of the river and the city surrounds. The floor to ceiling glass windows on both sides of the restaurant really connect the space to both the city and the water and give it an open ambiance if you are lucky enough to have a seat with a view (which I suggest you request!). The decor is inspired by traditional Japanese designs and architecture coupled with contemporary chic, where sake barrels tower to form floor to ceiling walls, communal tables dominate and lattice walls shape the space wonderfully. All of the menu items are incredibly tasty and in true Japanese style the presentation is awe inspiring. The head chef Shinici Maeda truly grasps the magic of balance and his many years of experience both here (formerly Executive chef at the famous Wasabi restaurant in Noosa) and in Japan shows in every menu option, each with their own unique flare. The following is a list of my favorites: 1) Sashimi tacos = 2 tuna & ocean-trout sashimi-filled baby tacos with chilled tomato salsa, matched with Kozaemon Junmai 'sake shots' (You only get two...but oh Lordy you will want more!) 2) Wagyu new-style thin slices of wagyu beef lightly seared with hot oil, finished with ginger, chives & yuzu soy (Crowd pleaser) 3) Chicken teriyaki plump corn-fed breast fillet finished with sweet teriyaki sauce, served on bok choy & spring onions (Crowd Favorite no#2) 4) Panko rice balls soy bean, bamboo & shiitake mushroom rice balls with wasabi mayonnaise (Fantastic vege option) 5) Kingfish jalapeño Hiramasa kingfish, yuzu soy, thin jalapeño slices & coriander (My favorite...Sooooooo Good) Whatever you chose will be amazing, but I implore you to try at least a few of the above. Ensure also that you accompany some of your selections with some cold or warm sake. If you are unfamiliar with sake the staff here are knowledgeable as well as generally efficient and attentive and are only moments away have you any questions. My last recommendation is that if you are wanting to book for a large group of 10 or more, you have to consider the 'Kawa' private dining rooms which are suitably appointed with long communal tables and and floor to ceiling windows looking out over eagle street, dining here just tops off the Sake experience! read more

Service was terrible. We ordered a somewhat expensive sashimi meal, but the server didn't bring or offer any soy sauce, so I had to go and ask for it. The karaage I ordered never came. I spend a lot of time in the US, where servers work for tips so they're always hovering around asking if everything is cool. When I'm paying top dollar for a meal I expect that I get what I want. Went here on Thursday night only just arrived in at 10 after a late flight on from Syd - not to mention an hour finding where we were staying. This was the only place still serving and we jumped on the opportunity. We had 10 min to order and the chefs looked unimpressed when we took the challenge. After quickly browsing and selecting the head chef appeared at our table - a very polite and enthusiastic young Japanese man with passion in his eyes. He said as it was late he would be personally cooking and would give us the best sashimi we had ever eaten caught that morning in Melbourne and flown up that day not to mention the other 9 courses he selected some on the menu and some new dishes he wanted to experiment with us. Matched Saki was served with the meal and I cannot begin to describe the quality of produce and skill that was involved in these dishes - recently named best Asian restaurant beating the likes of Tetsuya in Syd this was the best Japanese I have ever eaten anywhere in the world. read more

This place is the bomb for sushi. It's not cheap (sashimi, beer, and seaweed salad ran about 60 bucks) but man was it worth it! The raw fish was super fresh and not slimy like many of the sushi bars sitting on the sides of the street. Sake deserves credit for creativity and execution. They've got an imaginative menu with plenty of clever and unique dishes on offer, and everything we ordered was beautifully presented and delicious. They'll also accommodate requests for off-menu items and custom sushi rolls, which is awesome. The barra nigiri is excellent and definitely worth trying; they should really come up with some rolls using this fish as well. There were a couple of major letdowns that prevent me from rating this place higher than 3 stars, however. The first was the pacing of the meal, which was all over the place. Our entrees were delivered within 5 minutes of us placing our order. This is fine (or if anything, a little *too* quick). Then we got to sit around and wait for about 40 minutes after we finished off the starters before the rest of our meal started to arrive, all the while watching patrons all around us receive plate after plate of delicious-looking food while we sat there, hungry, with nothing. And when the food finally came did any of it come together? No. We'd receive one dish, finish it off, then sit around for another 20-30 minutes before the next item arrived. And they served the nigiri *after* the maki! I expect any high-end Japanese restaurant to know better than that. The other issue comes back to pricing, and portion size. The prices here are sky-high for the most part, and the portions are absolutely miniscule. The $35 "main" my wife ordered left her still very hungry, and not because she has a huge appetite or because I ate most of it for her. There just wasn't enough food on the plate. Same goes with the starters, the portions are mini-tapas-sized. Expect perhaps 2 mouthfuls per entree, as that's really all you'll get. Perhaps if you order 4 or 5 starters, you'll get enough food to make one reasonably-sized entree. So it's really hard to say that Sake offers good value. You'll get delicious and creative food here, but expect to pay around $100/person, minimum, if you don't want to go home hungry. Also, the wasabi on offer at Sake is pure reconstituted horseradish powder (colored green, of course). For a place as trendy and spendy as Sake, I consider this unacceptable. They should be using real wasabi, or at least offering it as an option for a small surcharge. read more

I love love loveeee Sake! Both the drink and the restaurant. While the menu has items listed as starters and mains, I find the dishes are great for sharing. And going with a few friends is optimal so that you can order and try lots of the dishes instead of only picking one or two (which I think is like trying to choose your favourite child or something). One time at the Sydney Sake I was told that I had ordered quite a bit of food, possibly too much. After we demolished every tasty morsel the waiter sheepishly admitted he was wrong to question us! The service is fantastic and it's one of the few places I don't mind waiting for other guests because there's a lovely bar to sit at with some great cocktails. Sip on a Godzilla while you prepare yourself for some serious feasting. Here's a tip: order the sashimi tacos, do not share. Seriously. Insist that everyone order their own serving or they miss out because they certainly won't be having any of yours. They are two small tacos (two bites to eat one). They are delicious. Saké is the best Japanese restaurant that I've ever been to in Australia. Food is top quality and the booths are very cosy. Saké is perfect for special occasions, in this case it was a birthday dinner for two. The service was outstanding - attentive but unobtrusive. They are very helpful when it comes to ordering sake. We're fans, but novices. We pretty much picked one item from each section of the menu to share. It's hard to choose standouts because it was all so good! I'll give it a go though: sashimi tacos - an old fave, fresh and spicy; sweet and succulent barbecue corn; panko rice and edamame balls - just the right amount of wasabi heat. There were a lot of really appealing vegetarian options, which is a nice change when it comes to fancy riverside dining. Just a heads up, there's a 2% surcharge when paying by card. My partner and I dined at Sake for a romantic birthday dinner and it was fabulous! We arrived early and were given the option to head to our table or enjoy a cocktail at the bar. Upon choosing the latter we were impressed by the cocktail menu and enjoyed our drinks. I noticed that Sake offers a bar menu too; this would be a great venue to have a delicious nibble and nice sit down cocktail or two before hitting the clubs on a Fri/Sat night. Also the bar area is separate to the dining area so the more formal dining area is kept quieter, less busy and relaxed. I am a big fan of Japanese food so we decided to order a variety of dishes as opposed to a standard entree/main/dessert. I love sashimi and the kingfish just melts in your mouth. The modern Japanese fusion is executed perfectly; even my partner who is not a seafood enthusiast was devouring sashimi as the flavour combinations and fresh ingredients are amazing. We ordered the special which included sea urchin from Tasmania and it blew us away! Our waitress was lovely and attentive. I took my partner here for our 4th anniversary. We have one of those traditions as most couples do, that on our anniversary we will go somewhere super nice, order whatever we feel like and not stress about the bill. Sake is the perfect place for that. Sake is one of those very hip Asian fusion type places, It's not the place you would go if you were wanting a traditional Japanese feast. It actually reminds a lot of a great restaurant that I went to in the meat packing district New York, so it was nice that I could get that same kind of experience right here in good ol' Brisbane. The menu is overwhelming, particularly if you're a sushi or fish fan. We decided instead of doing two entrees and two mains and desert that we would just order a whole bunch of entrees. We started with a tuna tasting platter for two which had a couple of tuna and avacado rolls, a couple of bite size tacos, a small tuna tataki salad and a couple of shots of sake. This was an amazing start to the meal and each bite was filled with flavour that seemed to explode in your mouth. We ended up ordering about eight starters. They are all relatively small in size, so we could walk away feeling really satisfied, but not stuffed. The highlight of the meal for me was the miso barra lettuce cups which is possibly one of the best things I have ever eaten. All in all, sake is a great restaurant, perfect for a special occasion. Visited site okay last night for dinner with special friends. Had a great waiter called Marco, Who bought special dishes out to give us a taste of all the cuisines of Japanese food. We gave him some parameters around cost and tastes and he was very good at sourcing the correct amounts and flavours!! We could have done the chefs tasting menu all the signature tasting menu but decided a more personalised approach was better! Particularly recommended the popcorn prawns and the Sashimi tacos! Outstanding food though the service could have been better. Shared the kingfish and eggplant with my wife and both were amazing. The wait staff had to take our order twice (not sure why) and then sent one of our mains to another table. As mains we had the tempura snapper (amazing) and pork belly which was nice but nothing special. A bit expensive and the drinks are ridiculously priced but overall pretty good. Probably wouldn't be a regular, but definitely good for special occasions. read more

Saké is the best Japanese restaurant I've been to in Australia, bar none. The sushi, sashimi and share platters are all delicious you only wish you ordered more! I went with a group of friends, which afforded us the option of trying a spectacular array of starters, mains and also dessert! All of it was exquisite and well worth the price in my opinion. The setting is intimate and eloquent in the evening, the ambience warm and alluring and the selection of beer, wine and saké means you'll be spoilt for choice. Arriving after 7PM on a cold evening, it was great to be seated at the sushi bar and be welcomed by the staff in such an enthusiastic manner. I tired the sashimi platter with 18 pieces of mixed seafood and absolutely enjoyed everything about it, there was a great variety of fish and couple of marinated bites. Next I had the steamed prawn shumai and wagyu gyoza both hit the spot and arrived nicely after I finished my platter with the arrival of my miso soup that really warmed me up - though admittedly that could have been the sake. There was also a nice bar area that on warmer evening would be glorious to sit and watch the world and river by. read more
