Ugh. They mess up everything! Sent my car registration to someone in Alabama and it took *months* to resolve. When we tried to close a home equity line of credit, it took months and delayed the closing on our house. And when we *accurately* entered their routing number and our account number to pay taxes, they couldn't process it. Now we owe an extra late fee. Find a different credit union! Salal will cost you time and money. (This is maybe the third time I've felt compelled to write a negative review for any business.) read more

Wow, what an unorganized institution. Everytime I go in to make a payment on our loan, I know I'll be there for 20 plus minutes. Last month 54 minutes because due to their incompetence the account was billed wrong the last time I was in. Every single time I go in, it seems there is at least 1 new face. I will never go through them again nor will I ever recommend them. This time when I went in there was a manager sitting in his glass cage and he heard what was going on. SITREP In these days when banks are nickeling & diming you for just about every transaction related to your banking, savings and other financial accounts, it is truly wonderful to find a financial institution that isn't going to bite you at the jugular, just because they can. ATM FEES (There are none!) Salal first came to my attention since, as a member of the Golden 1 Credit Union in Sacramento, CA, (an entirely within-California based financial institution), I was in need of a financial institution that was going to KILL ME with high fees for every out-of-state transaction I conducted. Getting hit with $3 ATM fees by Bank of America even for a simple $20 ATM withdrawal, puts a huge CHILL on wanting to do any banking with a those kinds of financial institutions. Luckily for me, Salal is a cooperative credit union that is a member of the same network as the Golden 1, my home credit union. Because of this, I am not slammed with any fees. I am actually a client in California and have recently teamed up with Salal Credit Union to offer me such an awesome and competitive rate on my solar panels. In Los Angeles there are a plethora of banks and solar companies and by far Salal outshines all of them. The customer service is great as they send follow up emails, snail mail and also phone calls to see how I am doing. They even offered me a really low auto loan rate at 1.99 percent which is unheard of in today's economy where everything is at least 4 to 5 percent. TAKE YOUR BUSINESS AND MONEY ELSEWHERE! We took out a loan with Salal to replace the windows. The 2008+ housing crises made it impossible for us to stay in the house, which we had to shortsale. Our mortgage lender worked out with Salal to settle our remaining debt, and they forgave it. Now 2 years later, the IRS is coming after us for nearly $1K in taxes stating the forgiven debt is income (eventhough the shortsale agreement say its not). I asked Salal if they could reissue us the appropriate IRS forms -- and they flat out refused, saying they it's too much time & energy & paperwork on their part. They have really moved in to the 21st Century. The mobile app is everything you could want. It's odd to me that I can do financial transactions at other local credit unions like Sound, BECU, and Harborstone without feeling I'm bothering anyone, but not at the Northgate Branch of Salal. I walked there today because I couldn't find my $20 when I was at Sound earlier, and Sound is not only further away, but closes earlier. It was 1:10 when I found my $20, so at 1:18 pm I walked to the Northgate Branch of Salal, which closes at 2 pm on Saturdays. It was important to me to end my week with a physical daily deposit, for a 52-week savings challenge, to keep myself honest and accountable. Here's how things went today. I stood at the "Wait Here" sign. Yes, I can read! And follow instructions! I was acknowledged with "Someone will be with you shortly" and responded "Thank you for acknowledging me." As I stood, I removed my driver's license from my wallet and the account card for my credit union and held them both in one hand. A service rep announced her availability, I saw and heard her and went to her station. We both sat down in our respective chairs. She asked what I'd like to do today. I said "I wish to deposit $20 via Shared Banking to my BE-- no! Sound account." "ID please." I gave her my driver's license and pushed the account card across the desk. "Last four digits of your social?" I looked around. People had queued. I looked to the right of her desk and went for a card. "I have a post-it here." She pushed it over to me. I wrote the last four digits, prefixed it with "SSN, Last four" and was on my way to "Please rip/destroy" when she said "ALL I need is the last four." "I know. I've written only the last four." She just balled up the post-it note. I didn't see her destroy it. She could have given me the Post-It note to destroy, I wouldn't have minded. But Jason from Harborstone Credit Union didn't mind sharpening a pencil for me, so why the employee surliness over my request that my personal data be destroyed after use? Is it because I'm not the sort of person to be bellowing out my personal details in front of strangers? Was she irked because I didn't make the numbers large enough for the surveillance cameras? My handprinting was perfectly legible. She gave me my receipt. "Goodbye." I wondered if this was said too abruptly, but I saw three people in queue, and it was 1:35 pm. Maybe the testiness was due to the whole fifteen seconds more I took on the Post-It Note. I had showered hours before with Dr. Bronner Pepperment Liquid Castile Soap, so I know personal cleanliness/body odor wasn't the issue. And I didn't snarl, hiss, or anything. Don't go to Salal's Northgate branch on Saturdays if you expect common courtesy. It's not common. read more

DON'T EVER USE THIS CREDIT UNION!!! I used these folks for a promotional 1 year no interest deal. paid faithfully for the entire year. Never was late. The April payment which was the last "No-Interest" payment was due May 28th. I paid it 10 days early. Hence, the small print said I had to pay it off before April 28th, before the last month interest began. But, the payment statement did not state this. I paid it off. They charged me an additional $17.61 due me "missing" paying it off. Hence, then they had the gall to tell me that the "final interest" 10 day payoff is actually $17.77, not $17.61 and if I didn't pay it immediately, I would continue to accrue interest. Totally FALSE ADVERTISEMENT and DESCEPTIVE practices. Don't use them. read more

I re-financed my home with them 9 years ago. They seem to be NEW to what they are doing. They consistently change how they have me submit payments. It has changed about 6 times. Originally auto-pay was only available on the 7th and some other odd day no where near where I wanted to pay. They finally added more dates, and recently (I guess) you can choose any date. I have had trouble with auto-pay for other bills so I would rather send a check. This year, especially the last few months my mailed payment has taken 10-14 business days for the bank to receive and process. They keep blaming the post office. NOTHING else I mail takes that long. It goes across country in less time. I believe they delay processing JUST so they can collect more interest. I drove it over one month. Their new location is in a high traffic area, and parking is around the side, difficult to get into, and out of. There are about 8 parking spaces, only 4 of them were available. There were only 2 customers in the credit union, so who else is parking there? The person I spoke to recently needs customer service training. The whole attitude was, I dunno, the post office is really slow these days, and your option is auto-pay. They did not know who I could contact to find out why they are not being processed in a timely manner. I am ready to report them to the authorities. read more

I am mostly glad we switched here from Bank of America. The customer service is friendly and efficient and they are very prompt in responding to calls and emails. The only reason I didn't give this credit union 5 stars is because of the mobile deposit feature. They are one of the ONLY credit unions that places holds on mobile deposits. My husbands work only does paper checks (no direct deposit option. I know, they're in the stone age) and it's inconvenient to drive to Northgate for every paycheck deposit. When my husband is paid on Thursdays, the check is held until Monday before the funds are available. This is annoying. Verity Credit Union and WSECU both don't place holds on checks under $2,000 for mobile deposit. Had I known about Salal's hold policies, I would've selected one of the other two credit unions but at this point, it's too much a hassle to switch banks again. If they fix that feature, I'm happy to update to 5 stars. All that said, my husband calls every time he deposits his check and they're able to push through the check right away but that's just one extra step we wish we didn't have to take. read more

BEWARE!! Salal is not only completely disorganized, their policies are more representative of a bank than a credit union! Every time I visit a branch, which is the only way you can deposit money and have quick access to it, there are new staff. Lack of staff retention must reflect something about a company! If you deposit money in the night deposit, it will be processed AFTER the bank opens, whereas all your withdrawals go through at 8am - two hours before branch opening. If you, like so many of us, live paycheck to paycheck DO NOT USE SALAL. Overdraft fees are $29 a pop, and it doesn't matter if your deposit was sitting in the night deposit box before your withdrawals went through. You'll receive that fee. BECU is the place to go. Much better customer service, policies, and they get the whole digital banking thing! You can deposit your checks on-line with funds immediately available!! read more

Over the last seven years my husband and I have had several financial issues to discuss with our bank and have always been met with friendly, accurate and timely assistance. The online banking works well for all of our day to day banking needs, including transfers between different accounts and banks, etc. The mobile app is also becoming a favorite! I'm not sure what's happened to this place but it's sure not what it used to be. They made such a stink about moving people from the big banks over to a credit union. Worst mistake I've made. The service is awful and once they mess up on your account it takes an act of God to get things corrected. If you are thinking of taking a loan out make sure you plan about 6 months in advance to get things finalized and certaianly don't think of using them on a home purchase. Credit Unions have raked in the benefits of banks bad behavior. But do not be fooled, they are just as evil. Prime example: Salal Credit Union. I have had several very tense conversations with customer service reps and even a bank manager. I am not employed at the moment and am trying to scale down my expenditures. I found that when one makes a debit card transaction a hold is placed on your funds and automatically a "courtesy" fee of 25.00 is place on your account. If you have other debit transactions that come through at the same time. the transaction of the largest amount is pulled through first, a 25.00 fee is charged if there are not enough funds. This allows the credit union to charge fees on the other transactions. In other words, first they cover their 25.00 fee, before clearing your other transactions, and this is just on funds that are on hold. I have never had this happen with a bank. INF charges were made on charges that went through, not holds. What's worse is that Salal pays themselves first, then your transactions. This practice is largely due to, of course, slimy greed on their part, but also because credit unions are not as regulated as banks. i had overdraft protection removed from my account and explained my situation clearly to the branch manager in Bellevue WA. She really hesitated to remove the protection and said that I would be charged a 25.00 INF fee for checks that are made without enough funds to cover them. I then asked what about all other transactions ( I hardly use checks, so that didn't bother me and I make sure to have enough funds to cover them). She stated they would be declined. Any fees? No she said. Well, I tried to temporarily remove a direct bank withdrawal from another lender that was automatically drawn from my account. The lender said they have a standard hold but would not send it through. Well of course Salal charged a 25.00 INF fee for this hold. I have had it with this credit union. The branch manager knew my situation. I usually am ok about remembering transactions I've made and I look at my account daily. However, a miscalculation in the amount of 20.00 wreaked havoc on my account. That is why I had overdraft protection removed. I could not afford the fees. I would rather have a transaction denied at the checkout than pay the credit union 25.00/ I explained all this to the branch manager. I even told her that I need to choose between rent, food and medication, but she obviously didn't care. Her one objective is to make money for the credit union and it doesn't matter if it's on the backs of the poor or working public or in my case - not working. She should have explained everything to me and this is the one responsibility that banks and credit unions laugh at. They love uneducated customers. Financial savvy is their number one enemy. The main problem, again, is that they are unregulated. Hopefully, not for long. This information went straight to my congressional representative and I hope this information goes out to BANKS too! read more
