More than once, we received diagnoses or treatment plans that were later contradicted when we sought second opinions or specialty care. One experience involved our dog, who had already been diagnosed with an autoimmune condition. She had follow-up bloodwork done at Davies and was prescribed antibiotics. After she continued to decline and consulting an emergency veterinarian, we were told antibiotics were not an appropriate treatment for her condition at all. Then experience that ultimately made us leave was when our dog swallowed a foreign object. X-rays were taken, and we were told there was no obstruction. When she continued to decline, we took her to a specialty emergency hospital, where she needed a $10,000 emergency surgery to remove an intestinal foreign body. The specialist explained that this type of foreign body doesn't typically show up on X-rays and that an ultrasound would have been the more appropriate diagnostic test. An ultrasound was never discussed or even offered to us. Tragically, our dog did not survive. I understand veterinary medicine isn't perfect, and not every case is straightforward. However, after multiple situations where specialists gave us very different diagnoses or treatment recommendations, we lost confidence in the care we were receiving. The weekend availability kept us coming back out of pure necessity but after our experiences, I would rather drive to Roseville and pay emergency specialty prices than risk receiving another incorrect diagnosis or treatment recommendation.

Showed up Saturday morning with no scheduled appointment. Had a horrible night with my girl with her panting and breathing uncontrollably the whole night. No sleep for either of us. Davies was able to accommodate us and see my little girl. I do wish collecting an emergency pay could wait til the end but I'm sure they have dealt with a lot of no pays so I get it.. the doc looked her over, prescribed a small pharmacy of medicines but she is so much better now. Kudos Davies. Thanks for taking care of my gremlin again.

One morning he ran off and I found him scavenging a carcass and before I could get to him, sure enough he got bone stuck in his throat. Fortunately it was not effecting his breathing, but he could not swallow and was clearly in great distress. I got him back home, called my Vet. They had no DR on staff until the afternoon. I then called every other Vet in my area, and they could either not see me because of being over capacity for appointments, or there was no Vet on Staff at the time. I loaded Max in the Truck, called ahead and told them we were coming. It was a long drive, 40 minutes with a dog in distress. When we arrived they got us in right away. Even though Max is a big , strong, and difficult dog, the veterinarian and staff were able to get the bone out of his throat with no sedation, no major procedure. They did not do anything extra, did not require an ultra sound of an X-Ray, and after all was said and done, it probably only cost me a little more than my regular Vet would have charged, and that was for an Emergency appointment. I know people will complain about the cost of VCA, but this is a 24 hour emergency service, and I for one am glad the community at least has this option given that extreme Vet shortage, and IMO anyone that takes on the responsibility of caring for an animal should be ready for things like this to come up. Great Experience, Thank You for helping my boy!

When I called, I spoke to Jeannie (forgive me if I misspelled) who has the utmost pleasant phone etiquette and compassion. It was going to take 50 minutes to get to Chico, but Jeannie was able to get us an appointment by the time we arrived, which was immediately. As we arrived, our pet was napping and comfortable. We were checked in by Alina, who understood what was going on from the detailed notes left by Jeannie, and offered to come out to the car when our appointment time was ready (only about 15 minutes) to keep our pet comfortable. Once inside, our pet was breathing rapidly. Another Veterinarian (I presume, I didn't catch her name) stopped in their tracks as they were passing by and asked if we were there for emergency services due to the heavy panting, and had a look of concern. I appreciate she stopped to ask, fortunately at that time we were not. When it came time to our appointment, Jewel took our pet's vitals and showed great compassion. Dr.Sierra made her recommendation ever so gently, to which my mother and I understood and agreed. When it was time to say "see you later" to my mother's best friend, we were able to be in the room and share her last moments. Pets are not just 4-legged friends, they are family and the only family to some. The care, compassion, kindness, concern and professionalism were by far the best we have ever received. I have been to a different VCA location 15 years ago and cannot say the same as the VCA Valley Oak location. We will absolutely bring every pet we have in the future for any emergent needs. 10/10 Thank you all, sincerely, for everything

Roughly 3 months ago, I told one of the girls at the front counter, that she looked like a certain…read moreactress and I showed her a picture of the actress. She said yes, she can see the resemblance and that was the end of it. The next month, I picked up insulin for my dog without any issues and again the month after that, I picked up insulin for my dog, yet again without any issues. Then a few days ago, I called in his prescription and they said, that they would fill it. It was his last refill, before needing blood work done again. Then just 2 days ago, I received a voicemail, while I was asleep, saying that I am no longer a serviceable client, due to an incident in their office. If they are referring to the conversation that took place 3 months ago, it wasn't an incident, it was a conversation and if that's what they are referring to, why is it now an incident, 3 months after the fact? Regardless of their reasons, if they don't want me as a client, that's fine, but don't let my dog suffer without insulin, over a 3 month old complaint. They are the only Vet, that had my dog's records and therefore, it would cost me hundreds of dollars, just to have him seen at another Vet and to have a Blood Glucose Curve done. No new Vet, will just give you insulin for your dog, without an initial screening and without a Blood Glucose Curve. I work long hours and 6 days a week right now, so scrambling to find a Vet, that would see my dog in the next day or two, was gonna be a challenge and that's not even considering the monetary aspect of it. I had to come up with a few hundred dollars and find a Vet that would see him immediately, just to get his insulin, which he hasn't had in 2 days. I still had 1 refill for my dog, so I suggested that I pay over the phone and send a friend in, to pick it up, but they refused to release, his last refill. Diabetic dogs shouldn't go more than 2-3 days without insulin, as it could cause life threatening issues. So whatever the issue was, which wasn't bad at all, they blew it out of proportion and they were willing to let my dog die, all because they took the word of one of their staff members and didn't even hear my side of it. Professionally, they should have let me know, what the complaint was and allowed me to share my side of it. I am only guessing, that it was the conversation that took place 3 months ago. I was able to round up enough money and I found a Vet that would see him today, so I took him to the new Vet and paid for the initial visit and a bottle of insulin for my dog. They scheduled an appointment 2 weeks out, to do a Blood Glucose Curve for him, but they gave me a bottle of insulin anyways, to save my dog's life. Whatever the incident was, I can assure you, it wasn't inappropriate, or sexual in nature. Even if she felt uncomfortable about it, why complain about it 3 months later? Why choose to not treat my dog, over something that I may, or may not have said, without hearing my side of it? I still don't even know what's it's about. Either way, they were gonna let my dog die, because if I wasn't able to come up with the money, or find a Vet that would see him immediately, he would have continued to go without his insulin. Not wanting me as a client is fine. Letting my dog suffer, or die, is not fine. I was even willing to pay for the insulin, over the phone and have a friend pick it up, but even that was denied. Luckily, I found another Vet, that was able to see him and they gave me a bottle of insulin to take home and scheduled the Blood Glucose Curve, for 2 weeks out. They saved my dog's life. I won't mention the Vet that saved my dog's life, not in this negative post, as I don't want anyone to be confused on who the negative post is about. I will write about, the positive experience that I had with the rescuing Vet, in a separate review. I don't usually write reviews, but this was about my dog and his life wasn't valued enough, to even get his last refill. I get defending your staff, but I did nothing wrong and still don't even know for sure, what the complaint was about. Even so, my dog could have died, because of the complaint, that if I am right, wasn't even an incident.

The doctors take time to discuss the pets' issues and needs. They both listen to my concerns and my observations, and they take plenty of time talking about our options and explaining things when I have questions. They allow for discussion and have often treated me as an equal partner in determining the best course of action for my pet. I so appreciate this! Though this is a thriving business, I've been able to get appointments within days of calling. And though they always have patients in the waiting room, our wait has never been more than twenty minutes, often less. Today we had my crippled dog in. The vet techs so kindly carried him in his bed from my car. They always are so kind to my animals, giving them lots of love and compliments. They allow me to be in the exam room the whole time. My pets feel comforted and less stressed. We get excellent medical care here too. Majid, my dog, had recurring UTI's. We were with another vet, who didn't have time, and prescribed the same antibiotic that wasn't working, for four rounds!!! Finally I brought Majid to Middletown. They tested him again and Dr. Shackleton identified the bacteria and a different antibiotic to treat it. That worked! It finally resolved his UTI!!! We were so relieved. This vet is also very considerate with the costs of care. They give you a written estimate to approve before doing any treatments. I really appreciate how they listen to my concerns and respond. Since the human caretaker of the pet is the largest component of the pet care over time, it helps that the vets and techs are so respectful and work as a team with you. We've used many vets in the area and Middletown, though it's an hour drive for us, is by far the best. Sometimes it's hard to get the desk on the phone on the first try. But once you do reach someone, they are kind and professional and get what you need taken care of. May all your pets be healthy! And happy. And if you need a vet, I recommend Middletown Animal Hospital.

He is dull, unresponsive to normal commands or even to calling his name. He stares at nothing for minutes and looks at me blankly. I brought him in because of a pain that he was having at night and I was concerned about his elevated B.U.N. leveI reported in his blood work done a few months ago. I emailed for his medical records and my concerns about his pain on a Saturday morning. I was emailed back and told that there was no available time on Saturday but to bring him in on Monday. I brought him in on Monday and there was no record that an appointment was made. I forwarded the emails to the office staff immediately. The staff went back to talk with a doctor and said she had time at 1:30 and during triage, Megan stated to leave the dog and they would start drawing his blood for testing. So when the vet was ready to look at him, the blood tests would have already been ran. This did not happen. I met with Megan the tech and I explained the pain he was having to her along with what his symptoms were. Bad breathe, lip smacking and gagging with no vomiting also the appearance of what looked like reflux to me. Dr Isabel V. never came in to talk with me. Instead she called at 1:30 and said she examined my dog and that he had impacted right anal gland and after having a difficult extractingly the gland he would not put his right leg down. She said his knee probably was the problem and that she needed to do an x-ray and in order to do the X-ray Dr. V sedated the dog. She oversudated the dog. It took him over 48 hours to come out of it and to stop shivering and panting. It's been 10 days now and the dog I used to have is gone. He has no personality, lost and confused all the time. Again, I requested his medical record and blood work. After reviewing the paperwork, I saw that the notes taken by the vet tech were not conveyed to the veterinarian. Dr V proceeded to work on my dog with no idea as to why he was there except for he had pain. In the end she prescribed gabapentin for a possible muscle issue because of high protein in his blood. The lack of communication between the Saturday office personnel, veterinarian tech and the doctor has literally destroyed my dog. But to make matters worse, he still has pain and I don't know what is wrong with him. I called back again and asked to have Dr V call me. When she called me back. I explained to her that my dog did not recovered from the sedation and that he was over sedated, her response was that he reacted well to the sedation. I explained to her that his problems still exists and the prescription of gabapentin only triggered more intestinal issues and that it appeared to me to be reflexed. Dr. V quickly flipped her prognosis and prescribed surflate to coat his esophagus and stomach lining because on the acid would inflame them. She did not suggestion to bring him back in to confirm my thoughts on what was wrong. She did not apologize or explain why she did not even come in to talk to me about what was wrong with dog. She just suggested another prescription. I would like to note that this is the third time I brought the dog in with the same symptoms. The first time Dr. V described prednisone and a cough medicine, the second time it was because he needed his teeth cleaned and now the third time, he prescribed gabapentin because of the protein in his blood. I do not have the words to explain how much it hurts to see my pet disappear before my eyes into a shell of a dog. I am so angry at myself for trusting Middletown animal hospital in Middletown CA.
