This park starts off with numerous baseball fields which I assume that little leagues use throughout the summer. Spread out around the park are a few small children's playgrounds. The organized sports and fun for the kids: Check! Near the middle of the park there is this decent sized pond with a fountain. Also ducks! Lots of ducks! Different ducks! Friendly ducks! Did I mention there are ducks? Benches and swings are all around the pond. It's the perfect place to take a daytime date to relax. Date/Nature/Pond: Check! On one side of the park and out of the way you'll find a small skate park. It is tiny and they really should expand it for the skaters in the area. They have more than enough room and it's hard to find great places to skate. Alternative activity space: Check! On the other side is a paved path that circles the park. It's a great path, but I wish it wasn't just a flat and winding path. They should install more trees or other things to admire. This path is surrounded by grass and only grass. I think this park could benefit from more trees, plants, and flowers. There is a gazebo on one side of the park in this area. There is also a dog park tucked away. The only reason this park gets a 4 instead of a 5 is because of wasted space. There's a lot of underutilized space that could be made beautiful here. I'm surprised anytime I talk to someone from the area and they have no idea that the park exists. Everyone from Danville and the surrounding area should use this park! No excuses!

Sports complex - There are two baseball diamonds with covered dugouts for the players and bleachers for spectators. Adjacent to the diamonds are two regulation sized soccer fields with goals. There is also fields appropriate for younger athletes. Central to the complex is a concession stand run by volunteers in the community. A wide variety of beverages as well as snacks are offered. Some of these include sodas, juice, water, hotdogs, pretzels, nachos & warm cheese, etc. There are restrooms located in the same building as the concession stand. 2. Rachel's Fun For Everyone Park - This past year RFFEP became a reality to our community as well as its founder, Rachel Ritchie. The park is fenced in so as to contain the children and prevents them from running into the parking lot. The intention of the park is for our special needs friends within our town and neighboring towns as well. The equipment includes swings, slides, a rock-wall, seated zip-line, seesaws, tactile toys, benches and most importantly a soft surface pad to protect our friends from injuring themselves and allows wheelchairs/motorized/walking aides to travel safely from each piece of equipment. The park is for all of our little friends. 3. Parking - There are parking options available adjacent the park as well as the outside perimeter fence surrounding the soccer and baseball fields. 4. Picnic tables and over head cover are available for picnickers and travelers and are adjacent to recreational vehicle hookups. There is plenty of shade, walking areas and a stream that runs parallel to the park where people often fish. Each year the park hosts Vine Grove's Fall Festival, Bluegrass Festival, organized run/walks and other events. The only reason why I rated Optimist Park at four stars is because the bathrooms are small, sometimes messy, not stocked with soap/paper towels and does not offer a changing table.

The only issue I have is that the very back of the park is filled with graffiti, some including slurs. They have a soccer field that is maintained fairly well for youth soccer but the baseball field(s) are rarely used except for practice and a local match between police and fire fighters. Overall a good place to visit, but be wary of the loud train that comes by every once in a while. I would rate it 5 stars if it was not for the graffiti.

Easy to access, plenty of parking (although it was a bit tight due to a men's baseball game happening at the same time) and comfortable seating. The field itself is in beautiful shape. All in all, a really nice place to take in a Big Ten softball game. I think the only downside for me was the loud music that was played during the break between the two games. I love music, but this was turned up way too loud for the size of this ballpark. It made it difficult to talk to friends sitting right next to us. Looking forward to taking in more IU Softball before the season ends, plus IU will host the Big Ten softball tournament this year, so bonus softball!

Shower houses and restrooms are decent but can be a walk from your cabin, depending on where you're located. This cabin is the "Persimmon" cabin. We like seclusion, so it worked perfectly for us!

There are multiple baseball fields on site and there appears to be a lot of parking that is paved. It didn't appear to have a problem with flooding even though the creek lies just beyond a wooded area to the south of the park. I did notice a playground for smaller kids near the entrance which cleverly uses the slope of the hill to add a long and winding slide. My only negative is that it is a long distance away from the ball diamonds which make it difficult for parents who wish to watch the game and keep an eye on their kids. I didn't see any playground for larger kids to use, though I may have missed it. (The parks website don't list features.) Another well kept park in Orange County. But what makes this park special is an area called Riley's Place. Riley's is a playground that is made with dark stained wooden towers, ramps, and equipment. After parking along the street, there is a ramp into the area which is surrounded by a short wooden barrier. Most of the park is elevated with a mulch base underneath and in the open areas. There are more towers than I could count, swings, climbing areas, and an assortment of objects made from wood (cars, turtle, musical instruments). The park seemed to be in good shape though I think the drainage of the open areas could have been a bit better. The parking is very limited to street parking (and not on both sides of the road), so hosting an event here would be difficult. Overall, it's a nice park with a uniqueness that you won't find elsewhere in the area. Review #2918
