I sent my 5 year old daughter to Salem Sayers for after school care. She admittedly has some behavioral issues (some self-control issues, and she doesn't always handle her emotions appropriately), but I'd heard nothing but positive reports from her teacher about her performance there.
Until today. I got a call while I was at work saying that there was an emergency and I needed to pick her up immediately. (She was throwing a temper tantrum.) When I arrived, I was told that she was no longer welcome to attend, because the office closed at 4:30 and if she was exhibiting poor behavior, they had nowhere to send her.
I understand that her actions were inappropriate, but I think the consequence was a bit extreme, especially given that this was the first time there had ever been a behavioral issue at the school. I'm a single parent and there are VERY few childcare options in the area. There was no disciplinary step plan, and I was given no time to find somewhere else for her to attend. She cannot even finish the rest of the week (and today is Thursday). This understandably causes some scheduling issues, as I am a teacher and am not off work until about an hour after her school ends (and that's on the two days a week I don't have a meeting after school). I paid tuition yesterday, and they would not return my check, although she's only attended school for two days this month.
Although the care was adequate, the way this situation was handled was not acceptable, and I'm left scrambling to find another place to send her. read more
