This review is to assist you with avoiding Sallie Mae at all costs. Do not have your child take out a loan for school through them. They are so aggressive with calling nonstop. You speak with a representative and you update and they are inputting your status into the system. Apparently they don't share the same system. After you've been on the phone with a representative for hours. You have multiple representatives thereafter calling and harassing you. It's so frustrating and unwarranted. I really hope that are better informed when a rep has spoken to someone and also notated that college graduates are not getting employed right after graduation. Give them time. BEST PREDATORY LENDOR EVER. 100% RECOMMEND IF YOU WANT TO GO BROKE. I've paid on time, sometimes twice a month. And always more than my minimum. I called last month to see if I could get a reduction in my monthly rate, they said no. I've been paying for THREE YEARS STRAIGHT, took out 18k and still owe 20k ($380/month @ 16% APR)..... I refinanced today WITH SOMEONE ELSE & now I pay $184/month @ 9%. Do better, absolutely disgusting. If I could go back to my freshman year when I took out this loan, because I needed to summer school, I honestly would have just dropped out. These people will harass you to death. After enduring a few years of constant robo-style phone calls from Navient, I decided to start the New Year by fighting to get them off my back. So I answered the phone and I *waited* for a live person to pickup on the other end of the robo call. [Sigh!] The guy from Navient was very professional, but I had to endure a bunch of personal questions so that he would realize that I am *not* the person they've been trying to find to collect money. I wasn't happy about answering personal questions posed by a stranger on the phone, but what else could I do to stop the constant harassing robocalls? Turns out, my name is different; my gender is different; my age is different (I graduated from college over 30 years ago); and the last 4 digits of my social are different. No surprise to me. Sooo...why the heck did Navient harass me with multiple robo phone calls every single day for years? Ugh! Now, at last, the calls have stopped. Such a relief. They call me at least 2-3 times a week saying I will be sent to collections; I speak to a manager and ask them to review the last phone calls that are recorded. Here is my PSA for the day: if you go to college and take out student loans, make sure you never, ever deal with navient. (And honestly if you have the ability just don't take out student loans). I am so sick and tired of these people and their predatory bullshit and I know that now I am going to have to take at least 3-4 hours out of my life on Monday to deal with them. About 2 months ago I called because my loans came due and I finally am in a place financially where I can start paying them back (yay!) But, the crux is I cannot give these people $600-$800 dollars a month, I'm sorry that's more than my rent! So I started the process of consolidating all of my loans (Even my private loans I made sure of that) and getting a lower payment. My payments weren't supposed to start until next month, November... guess who lied... again, I got a bill for this month and paid it ($168, I won't complain about that). The problem is I have been getting calls at my home, my parents home, and my job from Weltman, Weinberg & Reis, an attorney company that deals with defaults and collections. It seems someone had sent one of my private loans to them for collections. I called them back to set up a payment plan and let me tell you I absolutely love these kinds of assholes. The bill is around $1,700. And "they can give me a deal and I can pay it off today for $1,500!" Yeah no, I'm sorry I don't have that kind of money to give you, I am still in the process of rebuilding my life financially and that's not a deal, bite me. So I set up a payment plan to pay them $50 a month so they would stop harassing me and my family. Now, here is the kicker, I am being charged TWICE for the SAME LOAN! when I went online to check my statement I noticed that Navient was attempting to charge me the the full amount of the exact same private student loan of $1,700, that the asshole at this company had argued with me about. This guy on the phone at the attorneys office had told me flat out that Navient had lied to me (which they do consistently I am not surprised when they do, they don't teach their techs anything), and that it is impossible for my private loans to be consolidated, I am unable to do that and it was sent for collections, this man basically called me an idiot and said it was my fault I was in default even though I have done everything right. I get it bro, you deal with liars on the daily, but I am not one of them. So now I am paying this attorney and Navient for the same loan, and that's not right! And this is not the first time! February 2015 I had to track down the VP (on LinkedIn) and I lost it, they harassed me and my family while I was unemployed and in school to pay loans I couldn't pay on and they knew it. Although a Sallie Mae loan was suggested to my by my sad excuse for a financial adviser---I decided to do some research and TG I did! Sallie Mae is a HOT MESS. If there was a no star rating, that's what I would choose. THIS IS THE ABSOLUTE WORST BANK I HAVE EVER DEALT WITH. I had a student loan financed through this bank. I sent in a pay off check with the settlement amount (that I received from a SM operator). I dated it that day and sent it! 10 days later they received the check. THEN THEY HAD THE AUDACITY TO TELL ME I STILL OWED BEC THE AMOUNT CHANGES PER DAY. That would mean no one can ever settle up?? They're just trying to hang on to business. They can shove it. I really wish I could give one star on this. If you have a choice on who services your loan choose anyone but Sallie Mae. This is the most inept company I have ever dealt with. What ever you do do not take out private student loans. They own you after that. You don't have any of the protections that come from federal student loans but you also have no recourse to do anything about them. Attention Students: I would suggest to not ever go with this lender. Recently, I applied for only $3k to pay for my last class before I graduate and I knew I had to have a co-signer and my partner did for me and I am greatful he offered!!! Well, here is what happened, When Sallie Mae called my co-signer to verify them, they said that even if he had a 750 score, that they were declining the loan due to my co-signer having to high of balances on their credit cards, even if he pays as agreed!! I was so shocked that they declined a loan based on your credit limits!!! even if you have perfect credit and pay as agreed and we are talking about a person with a 750 score.. So before you get a co-signer,,,have them check to see if their credit limit on al their cards are below half.. The rep had the nerve to tell the co-signer that he should learn to consolidate his credit cards to one or two and not have three or four cards.. The nerveee!! So, I contacted the ECOA and the Consumer Finance Protection Bueru to investigate these folks and to conduct a comparison analyst review on their student loans. This is discrimination based on how someone keeps their personal credit card limits, not how they repay.....Students, think twice before you contact these folks and please save your money or go somewere else!!! read more

I applied to co-aign for my little sister for a student loan. I jave excellent credit. My credit debts are never late and are in good standing and they will not apptovr the loan. My sister has money in the bank and a CD with triple the amount we requested to cover the balance owed to her school. Keep your flaky loan for 3,300.00! I hate this financial institution. I've been dealing with them for over 10 years. My son needed a higher ed loan and I didn't do my homework well enough. We signed with SALLIE Mae and it was the biggest mistake we have ever made. They are impossible to get ahold of. And when you do, they are rude and of no help. Sallie Mae is by far the worst company I have ever worked with. I went to a private school, accrued much debt and was left with a great education, a great job and student loans from 3 major banks. Sallie Mae is the only bank which makes it difficult (to say the least) to pay above and beyond the minimum payment. They hold my money and do what they want it. They keep my additional funds paid in their account, waiting to apply them to my loans in a random order never the same routine month to month. For the past 5 years I have been trying to convince Sallie Mae to apply my payments the same week I pay and to the principle of my choice. This is still not happening!!! Some of the reviews on here are a bit subjective relating to the private student loan slavery system. I took out those loans and intend to pay them back, regardless of how fair I think the system is. Reviews should be objective and relate directly to our experiences with the company, as this one will be. Please Note: I am writing this review after having dealt with Sallie Mae for over 10 years and I now have my loans serviced by Sallie's sister, Navient. (Navient, you're next.) Sallie, please get it together. I'm paying you a LOT of money for very little effort. I don't particularly care if when I call, I get a native English speaker or not. I do however, expect that when I've been on hold for 20 minutes, my request is handled efficiently. When my requests are not fully understood or at the very least, repeatedly repeated to ensure my needs are being met, you are not meeting my needs. I've tried making it easier on your customer support team by using your website to find basic information about my account. Here's an example: Complete transaction history. It's nowhere to be found and surprisingly difficult to get. I tried to send you an email but after submitting my request, I realized that if I had not looked closely at the next page (which I've learned to do when private student loans are involved) I would have mistaken your cleverly placed "Are you still sure you want to send an email" page as a confirmation page. The reason I'm looking for my complete transaction history is that I've paid more than my regular monthly payment and you have some very suspicious language next to my "No Payment Due" notice. It says I don't owe anything for the next couple of months but that I can still make a payment if I want to. I know that if I don't pay at least the minimum amount due, every single month, my account will no longer be in "good standing." Where am I in that window of time? How much do I owe? Why in the world can't I find this information about my own account? You have a bad website and even worse customer service. If you were a restaurant, your food would taste incredible and there'd be line around the block! read more

This is the slizziest bank I have ever seen. I applied to open up a 1-year CD with the advertised rate of 2.35 (APY). It was a web application and should have gone through immediately. However, they know that the rates were going down, so they did not process my application for 4 days till the rates changed. Meanwhile, I lost my chance to secure an equally good rate from a competitor bank. In effect, what they did was false advertising which is illegal. I do not recommend this bank to anyone. In fact their student loan business is not any better. I meant to give them "0" or even negative star if it exist. Borrowers beware!! My son attends a college that only accepts student loans from Sallie Mae - no other financial institutions. We have excellent credit. For his first loan we chose a fixed interest rate with a monthly payment. The interest rate is 8%!! Very high compared to other financial institutions. Now we've applied for a 2nd loan. Again, fixed interest rate with a monthly payment. It's close to 10%!!! We tried negotiating the interest rate down. They wouldn't budge. In the meantime, my daughter got her student loan through Wells Fargo. Fixed rate of 6.2% and no monthly payments until she's finished college. Do yourself a favor and get a student loan through anyone BUT Sallie Mae. They'll milk you for everything you've got! read more

I cannot be removed from their call list because their website doesn't allow me to email them to request removal - only to apply for a loan. When I call, they have long wait times. Sallie Mae has got to be the most ill run company in the world. They hire total idiots to try and deal with people's finances, when they themselves, don't have a clue regarding the loan industry. Each and everytime a loan is paid and it's not the normal payment, they screw up the loan. You can give them specific instructions in writing about how the payment should be applied and they STILL misdirect the funds. They of course have NO PROBLEM cashing the check, just applying it. Each and every time it takes HOURS to get their mistakes rectified, and that is not until you ask to speak to a manager because the peeon doesn't understand English.
