I only worked there for about a month, the cook called me a liar and got in my face about stuff that dealt with my family ( my husband having Covid) so I called the owner and told her I quit because I wouldn't work in that kind of environment where a coworker gets into another coworkers face and yells at them over stuff they have no idea what they are talking about.. the owner asked me if I thought I could go back in and pretend it didn't happen.. to that I replied " are you kidding me ?? Let me start by saying that this rating does not apply to the majority of the staff that works there. Most of the caregivers are hard working, very attentive, and really seem to care about the residents. This particular rating pertains to Sue, the owner/manager. After 6 1/2 years of living with us, we moved my wife's mother in there due to needing 24/7 supervision for her Alzheimer's. In late January of this year, at the age of 86, she developed dysphagia. In short, it's the neurological breakdown creating the inability to swallow. She could not get food, water, and (toward the end) even her own saliva down. This is a common issue with late stage dementia patients, and is usually the precipitating cause of death. We were called twice and asked to take her to the doctor or hospital to make certain she was not dehydrated. During their testing, they also discovered her kidney function was in steep decline. Her medical directive was clear: no extraordinary measures, and any measures taken had to be weighed against the quality of life. We respected her wishes, and elected to begin hospice care. After discussing this with a few of the staff, we received a phone call from Sue. Her exact words to my wife were 'Well, we can't just give up on her!" My wife was beside herself! The woman was making it sound like she preferred to let her mother die than to save her! Sue suggested starting an appetite stimulant. We had to explain that it wasn't about not being hungry, she simply couldn't swallow. (Get that, WE had to explain to someone in the business what was going on.) She then suggested feeding tubes. We reminded her that her mom would not leave them alone if we did, and would likely do more harm than good. We also reminded her of the kidney issues. Sue's advice? Dialysis! I explained that we were not going to continue having this conversation. We were respecting her mother's wishes. A few days later, we got a call from the hospice nurse who informed us that, according to the records, my wife's mom had not moved her bowels in 11 days. Nothing moving in 11 days, and Sue wanted to put in feeding tubes and pack her full and risk sepsis! Not to mention they would have had to restrain her to keep her from pulling the tube out. On the 13th, I went in to drop off the check before checking in on her mom. I asked Sue how my mother in law was doing. She answered "It's hard to watch. But I guess I'm okay with it if you are!" It was all I could do to not tell her what I thought of her. But, out of consideration for my wife, I was trying to keep it civil for the remaining time we would have to be in and out of there. My mother in law passed 3 days later just before 6:00 am. A few hours later, we went in to collect a few of her things and some photos for the funeral. My wife spoke with Sue in another room, and asked how long we would have to remove her mom's belongings? Sue's response was "Well, you won't get any money back as long as they're still here!" My wife bit her tongue and just told her we weren't asking for any money back. Sue fell back on the bed, like she was flopping down in relief and said "Oh, thank God!" Here we are, just a few hours after my wife's mother died, and Sue's big concern is not having to give back the money! Offering ridiculous medical advice like an appetite stimulant with the side effect of reduced kidney function, after being told she already HAS reduced kidney function. Suggesting feeding tubes and dialysis, all to keep a bed full and checks coming in! Her audacity in offering unlicensed and ill informed medical advice seems to be surpassed only by her greed. The final insult was her insensitivity to my wife within hours of her mother dying, and showing that her big concern was all about the money. I spoke with someone who has dealt with the facility several times in the past. They informed me that this is a common practice with Sue, and that other families have complained about it, but she just keeps rolling along. If you have need of a care facility, the employees there are generally kind and caring. Except Sue. If your loved one is there toward the end of their days, you need to know what you will encounter. I am only posting this so you aren't as shocked as we were. Understand the level of ignorance and the lack of compassion you will receive. I was told that she is a part owner in the business, so don't expect to be able to go over her head and complain to anyone. Just know that, at one of the worst times in your life, she will be ready and waiting to kick you while you're down, with freshly sharpened cleats.
