My girlfriend gets her hair done here, and insists that I get my hair cut here too. We bike out there and make it an event. I grumble, of course. Katie does the job for both, and "gets my babe on" for me. I'm not as particular about my own hair as the g/f is, but I know HER hair is amazing and I know she thinks I am a total dish for two months after I leave Katie's chair. The salon is a nice swank place with large Lifesavers(tm) in a bowl at the register and comfortable seating should you have a wait (which never gets out of hand). The g/f, who is proofing my review as I type it, says "Make sure the women know that Katie gives a killer blow-out". I'm assured that's not dirty. As a guy, I know I have limited insights into great versus okay salon work, but the people working at Cu are all friendly, my girlfriend is cooing, and that's probably reason to given the place a try. read more

I scheduled an appointment based on Yelp reviews and was incredibly disappointed. My hair is not hard to cut. Pretty normal, straight hair. However, the stylist cut it straight across. No texture, no layers (even though I asked for some), nothing. It was pretty bad. Once it was done, I mentioned to the stylist that the right side was longer than the left. She brushed it off and said, no it's not - it's just because you part it that way. My thought was well..since indeed, I do part it to the side, then it should still be even. She told me if it still looked uneven after a fews day I could come back and get it re-cut. Really? Well, indeed. After a few days I did get it recut. I felt awkward about going in a second time to fix it, but the stylist didn't seem to mind. But - I really needed a whole new haircut and wasn't going to ask her to do anything but fix the length of one side. Positives - the staff were pleasant. It was easy to get an appointment and my husband also went (though to Kaitlyn) and had a fine experience. He plans on going back, while I will not. read more

Awful, awful, awful. So bad that I had to come out of yelp lurkdom to review it. Really, I'm utterly baffled by all the stellar reviews this place is getting. Hey, what are ya'll doing that I'm not? I had a fairly "ick" experience here before--where Summer gave me a weird, ugly cut and boring as hell color--but decided to give them one more try since the reviews are all so good. This time, I figured, I'd make sure to bring pictures--that would solve everything. It didn't. I had an appointment with "Danielle" this time, and produced not one but TWO pictures (front and back/sides) of the haircut I wanted. Happy flowing bouncy layers--it's not hard, people. She suggested that I needed to go with less bangs than in the picture, and explained her rationale for that. I agreed. Then it was time to talk color. People, I must have used the word "funky" about a million times. I explained that I wanted bright, funky, red and blond chunky foils. First she said that the color I wanted wouldn't come out unless I did a double-process--basically first bleaching and then dying it. Ahh...Ok...except for the fact that I get that color with foils all the freaking time in other salons. I reluctantly agreed to a slightly less-bright color, with some obvious highlights and lowlights. (Remember...FUNKY. CHUNKY. I no longer ride a desk all day, so I can go wild with the hair now! Woohoo!) So, want to know how both of these requests turned out? Well, first let's talk cut. My hair is basically all one length, save for a few subtle layers that give it the teeniest bit of movement. When I told her after she dried my hair that I didn't think there were enough layers, she said that I just wasn't "noticing" them because she had flat-ironed it. Right. Because I fell off the turnip truck yesterday, and I don't know how this complicated thing called "hair" works. How about the color? Well, first of all, there are no chunks. There is no funky. My hair is a dull brassy ginger with the tiniest bit of paler ginger and slightly redder ginger. And I have roots. I am completely serious--ROOTS. And those pesky 3 grey hairs that have recently surfaced at my hairline? Still there. I've never had such a crappy color job, and my stoner roommate used to do my hair using Nice N' Easy. In short, both times I've been here I left the salon feeling frumpy, ugly, and bad about myself. Not really the way you should feel the day you get your hair done. Know how after that fab salon blowout, you go around finding reasons to go out to show off your hair? I left the salon (both times) and put my hair in a PONYTAIL. I don't wear ponytails. If you want to risk it, give them a shot. But don't think you're getting a closer and cheaper Newbury St. experience--I've gotten better hair from Lords and Lady's. After I washed my hair and flat-ironed it myself I noticed a HUGE blunder. I am supposed to have layers framing my face and one side is about an inch shorter than the other and it looks ragged and choppy...it looks noticeably horrible. When my hair gets long, it gets curly and and fros up and I want to chop my head off. But when I get my hair cut, my gf cries and threatens to... chop my head off. I've been here 3 times so far, and it wasn't until the last visit that I finally LOVED the place and not just appreciated it. I was contemplating a change in hairstyle for months, but never got it done because I generally won't cut my hair until I can't stand maintaining it anymore. Please understand that I've had the exact same hair style since the 6th grade. Okay, almost ... when the kids in junior high were doing the AZN thang, I followed suite. I also bleached and dyed my hair multiple times, and I even permed it once. But never, NEVER, have I ever gotten a bob. The last time my hair was that short was when I was in preschool! So one day on a Thursday when I couldn't take it anymore, I called in and wanted to get the first appointment available. I was told Christine was a specialist in bobs, but wasn't available until Saturday. I figured I could wait for a job well done, and well done it was! I love how Christine has her book of looks, and how she asked questions to make sure she understood exactly what I wanted and DIDN'T want. The end result? Perfect! You wouldn't believe how many compliments I've received. I think the best moment was when my boss' boss saw me walk by and rushed over with eyes wide open to make sure it was me, in a good way! I think I'll go between long hair and bobs from now on. I have finally found my "look"!! read more

After I wrote this review Lauren actually stopped working at Salon Cu and I miraculously was sent to Kaitlyn. I want to say that the haircut Lauren gave me was amazing, but Kaitlyn? Kaitlyn is an absolute goddess. From the very first time we met she became one of my favorite people in the world. I trust her implicitely when it comes to my hair. She's never steered me wrong about cut or color, and is one of the few stylists I've ever met who actually understands that when I say "low maintenance" I actually mean it. I've been seeing her for three years (?) now, and I will never, NEVER, go to anybody else. Kaitlyn, I love you, but you already know that. I had just moved to Somerville and didn't feel like going to Back Bay to get my hair cut anymore. I walked past Salon Cu and decided to give it a shot. I walked in and Summer had an opening in a few minutes. I explained to her exactly what I wanted and she did it. No attitude, just friendly conversation while she cut and styled my hair. The part I loved is that not only did I get a great cut, but Summer was amazing with the hair dryer. I have naturally frizzy hair, and a lot of hairdressers give great cuts but can't handle the styling. If I wanted someone to attack my hair with a flat iron or grease it up beyond recognition, I would do it myself (as I've done many, many times). But when I left the salon, my hair was bouncy and glossy using only a hairdryer and minimal product. When I was paying $60 for a haircut, I felt it was worth the money because they were all decent stylists as well as haircutters. Who knew I could get that for almost half the price? *update 9.15.07. Two days ago I went again, and got another great cut, however, it kept falling in my face at work, and didn't look right tucked behind my ears. This morning I went to Summer and explained my dilemma, and she made a few quick cuts, and it works so much better! She didn't even charge (but I still tipped)! UPDATE: Update to my earlier review! I have recently returned to Salon Cu after bouncing around to a few salons because they have the best service for the best price, hands down. I saw Madison for a cut and balayage and I've had nonstop complements on my hair. Not to mention it's much more affordable than other salons in the area and Salon Cu's stylists and services are excellent. FINALLY a salon in the Boston area with a haircut and style for under $50. I've been living in Boston for 5 years. For the first 3 I didn't get hair cuts because I was a student and couldn't afford it, but once I was in the professional world that wouldn't fly. After frequenting a Newbury Street salon where I loved my stylist but my wallet did not, I started asking around. I live in the Ball Square area and heard good things so I went over. I saw Linda, who was awesome. She gave me a great wash, cut, and style and it was $45! Amazing, I'll definitely be going back. read more

I went here for the first time over a year ago because I had gotten my hair cut at another local salon and HATED it. I don't hate much but this was so bad I went back to get it fixed and I still didn't like it all. A co-worker suggest Salon Cu because the prices are good, it's local, and she really likes the man who does her hair. I was very impressed. Given the terrible growing out from a bad cut my hair was doing, Umberto made the best of it and gave me a cute cut. I told him I wanted something cute, a little funky but not too much so, and easy to do... BAM I had a cute, fun, easy to do hair cut that got lots of compliments. He made some suggestions for what we should do once my hair grew out more. I went back a few times before it was long enough to get it clean up a bit but each time he remembered exactly what we were going for in my length. He's chatty but concentrates when the time is right and I appreciate that. I also appreciate that everyone in the salon seems to be friends and thoroughly enjoy each others company. On of the best salon experiences ever. Kaitlyn did magic with blond highlights-- just the right tone and timing, correcting all the mistakes of her predecessors without fuss or highbrow attitude. The staff is friendly and earthy while the space itself is bright, airy and modern. There were as many men as women clients. A special note about Umberto, one of the owners. Cannot imagine a friendlier, more caring person. FIrst I didn't realize he WAS the owner. Looked just like one of the stylists with an apron on. He offered to run out and feed my meter-- so I knew he was a sweetheart. Then after I was trying to blow dry my hair myself (I opted out the paid service b/c I just wanted it dry), he offered to do it for free just because "he had a few minutes before his next client." It wasn't the money but the care and concern that his clients have a good experience. Not only are these guys as good as any place in NYC or San Francisco where I've lived the last few years, they have the right idea of making people feel great. How rare is that?! read more

I made an appointment at Salon Cu at the recommendation of my friend, Sierra. When I called, I didn't know who to see, and the receptionist asked me what type of hair I have to match me with a stylist. The salon is big and airy, with huge windows that let in a lot of natural light. The place has a very bright, modern design, with huge pop art pieces on the walls, and metal floor-to-ceiling metal stations. The shampoo girl was new, but very sweet and washed my hair in cool water at my request, since I had walked there and was hot and sweaty. (August) Carlo cut my hair, and it came out fantastic! I have very very thick hair that's just wavy enough to be annoying, and I have a weird cowlick on my neck that makes half my hairline grow downward like normal, and the other half grow upward and stick out oddly. I asked him for an angled bob that follows my jaw line. He thinned the crap out of it , which made the whole 'do hang so much better, and now I can dry it in half the time. The cut was fantastic, with a great angular shape and a shaved neck to overcome the cowlick. And he styled it exactly the way I would have, smooth and straight with just enough product to give it a piece-y bedhead look. I am absolutely going to return, and I recommend them highly. read more

Her work sure did put my grown out $4 box of hair color and $15 haircut to shame. I tried this place on the recommendation of other Yelp.com reviews. My hair is long and a bit unruly but the stylist, Summer**, did a pretty good job with it. Unfortunately she used those funny insta-layer shears (I don't know what the proper term for them is, clearly!) a LOT, which, while it creates a nice, light look direclty out of the salon, seems to damage hair in the long run. (Note to self: Ask stylist not to use insta-layer shears next time.)* As something of an aside, the stylist also assumed I like my hair blow-dried straight (I think because I made a comment about the frizz and curl), which meant the look when I left the place wasn't quite the way it would look once amateur moi took over the styling. She DID do an excellent job straightening without getting it frizzy, at least. Generally though, I think it was a good cut and it has lasted well. The price is decent, comparable to other salons I've been to in the Somerville/Cambridge area. A woman's cut costs $35 and up (mine was $35) and includes the standard wash & dry. NOTE: Like many salons, they no longer allow you to put the tip on the credit card charge (due tax purposes). So bring cash. *4/3/07 I have been informed that insta-layer shears are called thinning shears. Ah ha. **6/18/07 I went back a few weeks ago for another cut. This time I think the stylist was Carlo. This place received such rave reviews, but I ended up disappointed. I went in there wanting to have my current hairstyle fixed because it was so out of date and atrociously not me. I had my hair cut by Kristen. She was fairly personable, but she didn't quite listen to what I wanted done with my hair. I disliked it so much that I actually asked her to go back and cut the ends differently. It still looks pretty awful, and it's uneven. I liked the solid color I got, but I think she just didn't have the skill to fix what my previous stylist had done. I'm never going to get my hair done anywhere ever again. This place rocks, Umberto rocks, and my sweet, sweet haircut rocks. I cannot stop playing with my hair today. It's shiny, healthy, and gorgeous. It was easy to fix this morning, and looks exactly like when Umberto fixed it. That's usually my problem; I get my hair cut, it looks great when I leave the salon, and that's the last time it looks nice until the next cut. Umberto cut it so nicely, it was almost effortless to fix this morning when I got ready. Book appointments far in advance: Salon Cu is pretty popular and books up two weeks out. I went here on a Friday, I suggest making an appt. While they did have some walk ins they were very busy. In fact, I had to wait 15-20 minutes despite having an appointment. The big take away from this was that I got my hair trimmed like I wanted. I go to a lot of places in Chinatown just because you know, Asians know how to cut Asian hair. Our hair is a different texture. But they always thin out my hair. And I don't want that. I tell them no and they do it anyway. So Katie cut a couple inches off to get the dead ends off. She wasn't too rough when she washed my hair, which is good. The price was decent, pretty much what I pay in Chinatown but without me freaking out about how they thinned out my hair again. While I enjoyed how close this was to my home, price, and cut. I found another place by Fenway that I'd like to try next. So I may or may not be returning. The waiting for 20 minutes with 3 pre-adolescent boys running around was not the best part of my experience and may have affected it rather negatively. read more

I went to Salon Cu twice about a year ago and was very happy both times. Judging by the reviews, I believe I saw Katie the first time- jet black hair, no small talk? I was never naturally a small talk person (I kind of developed it over the years bc that's just how going to the salon is) and I was surprised but it was kind of nice to just be able to sit and get my hair did. I don't know why (I hardly ever get haircuts) but it is totally one of my favorite things; going to the salon. Its relaxing. Anyways, one thing I used to have a problem with was that stylists never did what I asked for, but Katie totally did. Everything looked exactly how I wanted and I felt good. A couple months later I think I saw Kaitlyn. She was so personable and super sweet, I had a great conversation with her. She took a bit longer, but she seemed like a perfectionist and I appreciated the time and work. I left looking hot and feeling great! I would go back to either one of them any day. By the by, the price is Right. I was pleasantly surprised at the reasonable prices being so proximal to the city. I'm from somewhat further west and the price here was only a little higher than what I was paying back home; I like. I tend to wait a pretty long time between cuts, but every time I walk by here I'm tempted to see if they can squeeze me in. read more

Yesterday I tried a new stylist, Katie. She had some serious blow drying skills and a light, careful touch. I looked pretty shmancy when I left the salon. However, after I came home and rewashed (too much smelly product) - I was a bit disappointed. My hair looks pretty boring. I. Hate. Haircuts. Maybe it's trauma because my dad shaved a divot of hair off of my head when I was little and he was giving me a home haircut. Maybe it's the fact that I have about 49 cowlicks and haircutters/barbers never know what to do about that. Maybe it was the bowl cut I had in junior high. Maybe it's the blue hair I had in high school. Maybe it's because my hair grows crazy fast and I hate trudging to the salon every 6 weeks for a haircut, because I hate haircuts themselves so much. I don't know why, but I hate getting them. But I woke up this morning, looked in the mirror, and saw a Beatles reject staring back at me. Going off recommendations from friends, I decided to give Salon Cu a try. I called at 10, and they said they could see me at 10:30, so I hauled my ass down there. Kaitlyn cut my hair, and let me just say, she rocks. This is the first haircut I've EVER had where I really thought the person cutting my hair had some stock invested in their work and wasn't just trying to crank out a quick cut for a quick tip. She took her time, patiently chopping her way through my ridiculous cowlicks, and gave me an awesome haircut. Standard short cut, nothing fancy, but she was thorough and I felt like she really cared about making it look good. Plus--and this is always appreciated when I'm getting my haircut, cuz nothing is quite as awkward as sitting in silence while someone is getting all up in your head's business--she was super friendly and a great conversationalist. I've been giving myself haircuts for nigh on five years, with wildly varied results. And I've gotten decent enough at it to avoid outright mockery in the streets. But people keep telling me that I'm "an adult now" and "really ought to stop living like [I'm] a poor college student" and "please sir I must insist that you put some pants on or I'll have to ask you to leave". What was I saying? Oh yes. I decided to get a proper haircut. Found this place via Yelp, as it's not too far from my apartment, and had generally positive reviews. I've had my hair cut three times now, and can give the place a solid endorsement. Umberto has done it all three times, and rules. He really knows his stuff, and has some great stories. Fun, good, and efficient. I make an appointment for my next haircut right after I get each one, as he's usually pretty booked (with good reason). Oh, and the all 90s station on the XM radio had everyone in the place rocking along the second time. Nostalgia ahoy! Sadly, one can only tip with cash, and I've forgotten to bring cash two of three times. Though that's more a criticism of my total lack of preparedness than of Salon Cu. I can't speak for all of the various options available to people with longer hair, or heads that aren't oddly boat-shaped, but for me, my weird noggin, and the exact haircut I want, this place is top notch. read more

I have long, thick, past-shoulder-length hair. And it's curly. And I've colored it for years. And it gets mighty frizzy. And I have possibly the worst attitude one can have for my kind of hair: completely laissez-faire. I don't want to spend one second on it, ever, beyond washing and brushing. No product. No styling. No blow dryers. But I always want it to look fantastic and bouncy and shiny anyway. I also want to see a real, live unicorn. I'm used to stylists rolling their eyes at my wanton disregard for proper hair care - and styling - and whatever the kids are into these days. Not Christine. She even said she liked my crazy hair! And we talked about Somerville for the next hour, which was awesome. She gave me a haircut and color that not only do I not to have to try too hard to maintain - but that my friends and co-workers are STILL complimenting me on three months later. 5 stars for sure! Carlo is the man. Although difficult to get on his schedule, it's so worth it. He takes extreme care with his work, listens to exactly what you want and delivers. He's hysterical, too! I've been going here for almost 3 years now and have never once swayed from this place. What I especially like about Salon Cu is that the stylists are not here to push certain products on you. They will make recommendations, sure, but you don't feel obligated to purchase whichever product is on their shelves. After living in Somerville for a year, I reluctantly bit the bullet and decided to find a local hair salon rather than travel the 30 minutes to my regular favorite. Under the recommendation of my sister I was able to make an appointment at Salon Cu with only a days notice. The salon is very bright and modern looking. It's a little more no-frills than places you might find on Newbury Street (no fluffy bathrobes or herbal tea), but for the price (under $50) it has everything you could ask for. Jackie was very sweet and friendly and took the time to find out exactly what I was looking for in a haircut. I wear my hair curly and straight, and Jackie was able to conquer the difficult task of giving me a haircut that looks good both ways. My only regret is that I waited so long to try this place. If you are as salon-phobic as me you can take my word for it that this place is worth a try. read more

5 stars for a hair salon from me! This is the first time I like how the hair dresser cut my hair. I am very particular with my hair, wavy, thick, and fuzzy without products. I also am a bit spoiled by the awesome and reasonable priced hair service in Taiwan. Well I got my hair cut by Umberto here. He is professional and really good. My hair is even on both sides which rarely happens. I have gone to harvard sq., south end, and many salons, pricey and cheaper ones. All the hair dressers seem to have "razor fever". They ruin my ends and make my hair layers uneven. Umberto gave great advice on how to take care of my hair and he gave me a lovely hair cut just the way I hoped for. I have never been faithful to a hairdresser since Salon Cu! I always went to hairdressers for one or two visits and then would "cheat" on them by going somewhere else for something new. I have been going to Carlo for a few years now . . . literally five of my closest friends and about the same number of acquaintances go to him as well. He does an outstanding job on my very precise bob...but does just as well on my long-haired friends. He will also share his opinions when you when you ask for an unflattering cut...which is something I really appreciate. (I just don't know what would look good on me.) Since I don't have any gray hairs yet, I haven't seen him for color yet. However, he is one of the best colorists I've seen (based on my friends' hair). I have also been to Christine for eyebrows. She has a bizarre passion for eyebrows and has a plan for them. As my friend said the other day, "I don't think anyone (including me) has ever had a plan for my eyebrows...and I couldn't be happier about that." Overall, the whole staff at Salon Cu is amazing. I always feel like a mini celebrity when I'm there....they all call me by name and all stylists participate in our conversations like one big happy family. I can't emphasize how much I love having found a great, inexpensive hair salon that is literally around the corner! (I am, however, slightly worried that sharing this amazing salon with others will mean I have to wait a long time for an appointment. I live around the corner, and was inspired to try the place based on the good reviews on Yelp and on the very cute haircuts my roommate got there. Salon Cu is kind of like the hair salon version of Cheers, except more sleek and modern looking. Everyone is very friendly. Carlo cut my hair, and did a FANTASTIC job. My fine blond hair has never looked so sassy after a blow-out! I was hot to trot that Saturday night, that's for sure. Parking is easy - meters on the street. Saturday appointments need to be made about 2 Saturdays in advance. Tips in cash only. There's no need to be elitist about hair salons - people off Newbury Street DO in fact know how to cut hair! You know what, I'm actually a fan of this place, and I don't typically like salons and even cut my hair on my own. I made two separate appointments, one for a cut and one for a color. I've now been twice to Salon Cu, once with Christine, and once with Summer, and I've been very pleased by both experiences. I have dark brown hair that I've dyed dark red for the past two years. Because of some confusion with the receptionist, I ended up only being booked for long enough to do a single process, even though I tried to explain that I usually had highlights or a second tone. Still, when I got to my appointment, Christine reassured me that my older highlights would still give depth and definition to my color with just an overall red, and she was right. She I liked the color and she gave me a great cut and blowout. My hair is thick and my cut/colors are usually very pricey, so I was very pleased with the $85 price tag. Second time round, I came to Summer. This time, I had learned from my mistakes and made sure they booked a long enough appointment to do what I wanted and still have time after the cut to dry and style my difficult hair. Summer was great in helping me choose a shade that was "more adventurous this time". The color was vibrant, the highlights were bold, but still natural - I loved it, and the cut was fantastic. She was more expensive (more in the range of $130), but still much less than I've paid for less-quality jobs at other salons. The only real gripe I have is that it's pretty hard to get an appointment at late notice - which is difficult for me because I can't usually set my schedule that far in advance. But my hair looks great, so I'm going to keep coming back. read more
