First on the salon: This salon is unusual in my experience. They have no front desk and no receptionist. As far as I can tell, you pay your stylist at the chair via Square or something other digital, or cash. During my visit, it was really loud. There's music and a washer and dryer going and people talking loudly. They do have easy online booking with lots of open appointments. Everyone was really friendly, but it was a bit too casual for my taste. Second on my cut: TBH I came in with incredibly damaged hair that hadn't been cut in a while. I'd say my hair was medium length and I was looking for a short cut. I gave my stylist a couple of photos of where I wanted to go: short and spiky or undercut. I explicitly said I wanted angular, stacked in the back to give some height on the crown. What I got is the same length all over except for minor tapering around my ears and the nape of my neck. Further, the cut in the back is not even. It is longer on one side than the other. As far as styling goes, there was none. Blow-dried with a phone call in the middle and then hairspray. My stylist offered to correct my problems. I rely on Yelp reviews a lot, so I've struggled with whether or not to post this review. Everyone at this salon was nice. The stylist was nice. I needed some help to get a style after some things, and I got a simple haircut like I could have at Great Clips. Looking back at other reviews, there are lots of folks from out of state who may have needed a quick fix or a touchup. I'd say do your research, and definitely book that consultation. And talk through that consultation. read more

I had a horrible experience with Mo. She is disrespectful and absolutely not professional. I stopped in to inquire about hair coloring. Her language was adversarial and disrespectful so I cancelled my appointment. They were closed on Monday so I had to cancel on the day of the appointment. I didn't trust someone with an attitude to touch my hair. I got my hair done at Zelle and it is perfect. Today when I walked by the Salon she saw me through the window and ran out of the salon and chased me down the street yelling with adversarial language. She told me I could never come back there. I love Salon Detroit! I see Katelyn for my hair styling, but everyone there is friendly and nice, and my entire experience was wonderful. First of all, it's in a prime location. You can get pretty and head out from there! We were greeted immediately by the stylist up front (they don't have a receptionist) and were offered beverages. I only waited a few minutes for my appointment. Katelyn is awesome. I got a double process color and a cut/style and it turned out so beautiful. Shiny, rich multi dimensional color. Her assistant is also magical - getting my hair washed was the best half hour of my life that week. It's modern and super clean with super comfy white plush chairs and a great view of downtown. I do not think I have ever written a review on any place, but felt compelled to do so today. So, I walked into the establishment about 15 mins before my appointment started and was greeted by Ms.Sheila. After about 2 minutes of waiting, Ms.Patti comes from the back and tells me that she does not do cornrows. I was a little shocked, but I still asked if she knew how to braid, and surprisingly she knew how to do that. After the awkward silence passed, I was apologized to and I left. Either way the environment was a little unwelcoming, but that is detroit. But to be a hair dresser and not know how to do cornrows is embarrassing, and unprofessional. Anyways, I do not recommend this establishment unless you know what services they absolutely can/cannot do. read more

Everyone in the salon seemed very sweet throughout the experience, including the person who serviced me. The stylist and I sustained rapport throughout our time spent and she assured me that I'd be getting the look I wanted after she reviewed the reference photo. I mainly wanted a trim (in a way that brought more volume) and bangs. She snipped away and was careful not to take too much off of my ends. She also cut my bangs and then applied Cantu and CHI hair product. My hair did smell good, lol? But that was it. She didn't finish my hair. I left the shop with wet, flat, curly hair which is a very weird look. Since seeing hair rollers on the floor, I thought she knew how to put them to use. While she was processing my payment (I made sure she still received 20% tip, totaling $54), I asked if I would be sitting under a hair dryer. She responded saying "no, it will make your hair frizzy". She could have just said she wasn't familiar with this hair type & I would've left before the wash... As I headed out the door, one of her colleagues said my hair looked good . Y'all take a look at these pictures, they're time stamped. I went home, added some TGIN and used my own blow dryer hood attachment to dry my hair. When I looked in the mirror to examine my bangs, they were cut in a very messy & uneven section. It sucks, not only because today is my birthday, but because my gentleness was taken advantage of. I shouldn't have to mention to a professional hair stylist to finish the style... I left that salon with wet, unstyled hair and everyone acted like it was fine. For the sake of not making it a bad day I didn't say anything, but if you're a person prepping for a big day or one of those people who would have a meltdown after something like this--hopefully you already saw the pics a went to another listing the other stylist saying it looked good makes everyone in there sus: I know that's your homegirl, but come on, now it looks like you guys are in there covering for each other's screw ups please don't don't do this to another client, even if they aren't one to complain! read more

Katelyn Deck, my favorite stylist from curl up and dye, recently moved to Salon Detroit and I followed her. I have thick, curly, short hair that's difficult to style and cut, and Katelyn always does an awesome job. So good, in fact, that I've been able to go 5 months between haircuts because it grows out so well :p The receptionist at Salon Detroit was really nice when I was making a last minute appointment, and the salon itself is really beautiful. It's got a lot of natural light and is right next to campus martius in a gorgeous area of the city. The salon is clean and the music is great - overall it was wonderful. The only thing I wish was a bit better was the parking - it took me at least 20 minutes to find a spot and the garage near the salon was pretty expensive. I'm a die hard threader (eyebrows) and I never go for waxing. It was a desperate time and I don't have a car, so I came in. I'm pretty disappointed because I had a dialogue about the left eyebrow being patchy and to please leave the hairs and keep it even. I don't think Deanna was totally listening as she heated the wax. The inner corner is gone . I just got engaged. I'm going to have to pencil this in significantly until the hairs can grow back. If there's one time in your life you want to look pretty... I can't totally fault the salon because I know better than to wax. Threading is the only way to get it done evenly and correctly and it is better for your skin. Admittedly, I'm a frugal person. This is no secret. I like to spend money, but it's hard to spend more when I can get it cheaper. Sometimes I forget about quality over quantity. Today, prime example. My husband found Salon Detroit on Yelp and we poured over pictures and reviews before deciding to book two haircuts ( daughter and me ) and a brow wax. Really, the prices are in line with other salons, but I fancied the idea of going to a salon in the city. Katelyn and Shelby worked with us ( in tandem ) and really took the time to listen to what we wanted. We got two new do's complete with styling and ran well over our hour appointment. This didn't seem to bother Katelyn at all who came back several times to retouch my hair. Mila got her eyebrows waxed and I forgot to check them out before leaving. Should have bc between the eyes weren't touched, which is where it was most needed. During our visit, we talked about our next visit, which will be color. This salon EXCELS at extreme hair color. Pink, blue, rainbow, this is where to go. Consultation was free ( sitting in chair anyways) and color prices were surprisingly reasonable. ( no I'm not telling what my color choice is, you'll just have to wait!). Katelyns business card has her cell on it, to which she told me to use, and by now we are long time IG friends. I waited for the always expected product up sell but they don't roll like that. I like that we went to the city for a hair appointment. I love the ladies who worked on us.
