It's scary to try a new hair salon, but Salon JKU put all my fears to rest with a very positive, relaxing, competent, and friendly haircut experience. After trying another high-rated salon in Philly and having a hairdresser try and fail to thin out my very thick hair for two hours, I did some research and came across Salon JKU. Even though they don't don't have an online booking platform, it was fairly easy to make an email inquiry, then book a time within the week over the phone. I booked with Amelia, and was really glad I did. She asked a lot of good questions about what I was looking for, then talked me through what she was going for. I get my hair cut every 6 months, so I was really just looking for someone to take out weight and give my hair some shape. Amelia gave me a wonderful short haircut with a lot of movement and texture. Her cut was meticulous and she took out an incredible amount of weight, yet maintained volume and body. After our discussions about my typical haircare routine, she gave me a cut that looks good without any styling. I really appreciated that, because sometimes the cut looks amazing after it's all blown out, but it's not a look that I can ever recreate at home. A few days after my appointment, someone asked me how I styled my hair, and I told them I didn't style it at all. They couldn't believe it because it visually had so much volume! The pricing is higher than other places that I have been in Philly (I paid $100 + tip), but in my opinion, it was totally worth it for one of the best haircuts I've received. read more

As an adopted Asian American female I never really had guidance on how to style and color Asian hair. I suddenly realized that maybe I was missing out on something for the last 27 years. So I went on the phila queens Facebook group and posted for Asian hair stylist recommendations for both cut and color and someone kindly recommended salon JKU to me and after looking at their Instagram and their stylist personal Instagram's I decided that this was the best salon for Asian hair given a lot of the stylist are of Asian descent. I got a full head balayage done by Memmi (@coloristmemmi) and haircut done by Chris Sotos. I cannot express enough how pleased I am with the results. PLEASE note this does not mean the salon is specialized in Asian hair only. I was the only Asian client in the salon yesterday. You definitely don't HAVE to be Asian to come here lol I just really really wanted my hair done by someone of Asian descent since I've never tried that before. Anyway, Memmi did such a good job and was so pleasant to talk to while she was doing my hair she really is an interesting person with such a cool backstory. Same goes for Chris, who I had many things in common with. I cannot wait to return to the salon for my next cut and or color. I've been going to Seiko for color for years. She is a true artist. I get so many compliments on my color - many don't know I am not a natural ginger. When Salon JKU opened, I started getting my hair cut by Johnny. I have fine straight hair and he is a magician. Everyone who works there is kind and unpretentious which is not the case at many salons. Love Salon JKU! read more

I was previously attracted to this salon because a previous reviewer mentioned that they can work with Asian hair. I had such a great experience here! I went in to see Amelia back in late June to dye my hair back to a dark-medium brown but still keeping the dimensions from the blonde that I had. I talked to her what my goal was and she suggested a couple of options based on where I wanted my hair to eventually fade into. I was in and out in under 2 hours. After about a month, the color has lightened up a bit but it still overall a dark brown. The salon is so clean and refreshing, and you also get a nice view of the city. Highly recommend! read more

This lovely salon just opened a few weeks ago. Seiko(one of the owners) is definitely the top colorist in town and I do not want anyone else do my coloring! I've known her for a long time because I keep following her wherever she works to get my hair color. She is also incredibly sweet and a beautiful lady! She does an amazing job everytime I visit her. It's always the perfect color blonde and matches my complexion even though I'm asian. She really knows where to place highlights to give it a nice natural look. If you are looking for a colorist, go see her and I promise she will surpass your expectations! read more

I came here in November to get a balayage, which I think was a combination of foils and balayage. It took me a little time to adjust to my new look because of the rooty look that I came in with, but looking at the photos of the beautiful highlights compared to many other highlights that I had in the past elsewhere, this was the most natural look that I have had. Now, almost 4 months later, my balayage has grown out softly and I am not hurrying to get it redone because of the soft grow out, I have debated letting my natural grow in because of the soft grow out. Another hairstylist who I consulted with said that he loved my highlights that were done here, more than any of the other photos that I showed him of other highlights that I had done previously elsewhere. I also enjoyed my beautiful brush set blowouts, the lovely Milbon treatments, oil and Olaplex treatments. The salon is beautiful, it looks very much like a modern gallery, very chic and a beautiful space. I like that it is a small space, and not overwhelmingly busy like many salons. I very much enjoyed my experiences here, however my only feedback would be that I wish that I felt more comfortable communicating with my stylist about my color, and that my hair got dry from the highlights. Aside from that, I am glad to have come to JKU. It is conveniently located and they carry high quality products such as Olaplex and Milbon. Johnny and Seiko and the whole staff are fabulous. Cuts and color are given with the utmost care and style. The shop is mellow, nice decor and clean. Johnny is an artist with hair--understands it, knows how to work with its individual character to style it in wonderful well shaped ways. he's completely sensitive to what his clients want, no prima donna forcing something on clients they hate when they leave the salon.
