Since Sal's complained to Yelp that my wife wrote a review and it was a "second hand perspective" and removed it.. here I am writing it myself. Read all of the negative reviews. They're accurate. My son and I have been here once for a haircut and it was uneven and not cut properly. I showed up again this past week to give them another chance. I was a few (3) minutes late for his appointment. I was told "I'm running a business here you're late". And was given a HUGE attitude through the entire cut. I was uncomfortable enough that I was considering getting up and walking out at that moment. I'm not confrontational, so I stayed for the cut. Tipped $2 which the barber didn't even deserve and then left. You won't be running a business for long if you treat customers like this. There are much better options in the area. Don't go here. You've been warned. read more

A year later and a lot has changed!! NO, I'm not talking about Anas and the great haircuts and beard trims I keep getting ... we just had a baby!! I will continue to treat myself to shaves at Sal's. I cut my own hair often but when there's a special event, job interview, or wedding I only go with Anas. There's no better barber shoppe around! read more

You walk in, exchange glances with whoever's already sitting by the windows and you know you're next in line. The chairs are turned, so to say, when the next person walks in. This is because there are no reservations. First in, first out. It helps you if you know if you want scissor action or razors (and what "number" blade). Received a haircut this past Tuesday for the first time at this spot. Didn't quite catch the barbers name but he did say he's there mondays and tuesdays (Sal?) Absolutely gave me one of the best haircuts I have gotten in 9months. I've been dying to find someone I can trust that listens to my requests and can visualize the cut! Three words. Over confident, arrogant and under performing. Bad experience and got a bad hair cut. Even after showing him a sample on a photo of the exact cut I wanted which was pretty simple the cut that he did was exactly the opposite. If you like your hair, do not visit this barber shop. He just wants to get customers in and out as quickly as possible. $20 down the drain. Have to go get it fixed again to some other barber shop. read more

I've been going to these guys for about 3 years and they do a fantastic job every time. I'm done with unpredictable chain places where you never know what you're getting. Even when I've walked in with a few people ahead of me, I'm never waiting long, they work quickly--and they're cheap. And despite not being too articulate about what I want (like most guys, probably), they always figured out how to make my hair look good. Anas, a great new local barber! The original shop is in Jamaica Plains and now has another shop in Newtonville. He is hyper focused on your haircut. He went over the cut multiple times and had an elaborate process to get the cut right. We came in without knowing what cut to get, but he gave my boyfriend the best haircut I've seen on him. 15 dollars on Tues and Wed is hard to beat, especially when it looks like he got it done at a higher end shop. The first time I took my son here, they nipped his ear. I figured it was a fluke after all these great reviews. The second time I took him here, the hair cutter was extremely rude and condescending towards me. My son wanted to keep his hair on the longer side and the guy said that if I didn't want it short I should go somewhere else where they had hair stylists. Yet he still cut it was happy to take my money. I was only asking for trim, not for him to create a new style (although the website boasts that they will find the right haircut for everyone). He seemed to only want to do Buzz Cuts. The women before me with her son was allowed to stand to the side but he demanded that I sit down. I complied but felt very unwelcome here. Been in there a half dozen times with my son, and I think ONCE they got the haircut exactly right. Young guy cutting paid more attention to the football match on the telly than he did my son's hair -- gave a default Buzz cut despite other instructions. It's just not worth the small $$ savings to have amateurs buzz your hair. read more

Just moved to the Boston area from San Francisco and so far I am completely unimpressed with the Barbershops in the area. Maybe because I'm pretty spoiled with the type of pampering we get in SF, so let me just focus on the haircut on this review. I asked for something simple IMO. I asked for a low bald fade up to a #2-2.5 to the top of the fade. A lineup and a thin hard part. Then for the top, only trim the BACK of my head 1/2 an inch. What did they do? I received a HIGH bald fade to a 1/2 at the top of the fade and they cut the top of my hair a whole 2-3 inches off. Seriously. Why are you giving me a military buzz? IF he stopped for a second to tell me what he was doing or seek clarification, this review would be different. I don't like writing bad reviews however, I'm tilted every time I look in the mirror. Real men only. Sales is the best men's haircut I've had in a very long time. The cut is clean and stylish. Very professional. BUT, its the little things that make Sal's great. A straight razor shave to get all of the fine hair around the neck. Blowing away all of the cuttings. Removing all the small cuttings that would normally make you itch the rest of the day. I'm really picky about trying a new place when it comes to hair, but it's so local that I gave it a shot and both of the current barbers (I think they are hiring more as folks are coming in a lot as word spreads how good the place is) are great and quick as well. I used to pay double for haircuts that took 2-3 times as long and weren't necessarily as good either, so I'm a fan after 3 visits to date so I'll keep going back and I've decided to make Sal's my go to from now on. I just took my three year old there. Looking at it the next day, it will is by far the worst haircut he's ever gotten. I am actually cringing when I look at him. My main problem is that the guy seemed super rushed and impatient, and yet we were the only ones in there. My son has curly hair that looks very different when wet, and while I was trying to show him where I wanted the layers put in, he starts spraying water all over my son's hair. When I asked him to stop for a moment, he just kept right on spraying. He pretty much ignored what I asked him to do, cut the back WAY too short, and worked at warp speeed without taking a second to check his work or ask me what I thought. read more

I have brought my toddler here several times and they are so patient and accommodating. My son wiggles a lot and somehow they manage to do a great job while working on a moving target. If there is a line, it moves quickly. read more

Anas does not mess around. I walked into Sal's around 4:30 expecting a wait, only one barber inside, so I had a seat. About 3 minutes later, Anas finished a cut, was prepped and ready to go. I had a seat, told him what I wanted, and 5 minutes later, I was looking at a fresh cut. No joke. I set my parking meter for 60 minutes, and got back with 46 minutes left on it! $17 + tip, high quality cut, friendly service. Will definitely be back! read more

Previous customer, now really disappointed. Been coming here for the last 2 years with pretty decent results given the price ($17 for a cut in Boston, pretty affordable), but just had a terrible experience today. Went in for a quick cut, haircut finished within 3 minutes, ended up too short, with multiple bleeding cuts on my lower neck from careless shaving, and visible patches after returning home. Came back asking for help, seeing if they could fix the parts sticking up in the back, but was met with significant confrontation from the barber making me feel inappropriately bad for asking to quickly fix a bad haircut. Anas took me in the back shortly and gave a verbal offer for a discount on the next cut, but after the embarrassment I had in simply trying to express my unhappiness with the worst cut I've had there, can say for sure I won't be going back anymore. Shame. Bottom line, if you need a quick cut and don't care so much about results, then Sal's would be fine. Don't expect them to be open to feedback though - if you're not happy with the result, maybe just keep it to yourself. read more

Wait system is terrible. No written list, no numbers. They ask everyone to just sort of figure out whose turn it is, which gets very confusing when there is a lot of people waiting. Needlessly stressful. Join the twenty first century, guys. read more

About the only positive thing I can say about this place, is how clean the shop was. I walked in for a haircut on a Friday afternoon, and my barber appeared utterly disgusted he had to cut someone's hair. So needless to say I was already put off slightly, but when I communicated what I wanted his voice was soft and hard to understand. Nevertheless he gets straight to work, though slightly nervous as I'm used to barbers loudly communicating with me so we're on the same page. When I asked to have my beard cleaned up, not cut/trimmed/touched just clean the edges up, my 5" inch beard was cut down to 3/4 of an inch. At this point there's nothing you can say because hair can't be put back, but I wish I could say that was the only thing that turned me off. As the final step of a haircut, you get a straight razor to the back of your neck, and I'm not stranger to straight razor shaves but, this felt like talons being dragged down my neck. A facial grimace is usually an indication that someone's in pain, but not this barber, he just kept going in his half ass manner and didn't even clean up the rest of my hairline with a straight razor like many shops do. I guess my fault for being impatient and not wanting to wait to go to my normal barber, but an impatient 35 dollar cut that left my beard ruined was not worth any of this aggravation. Never ever again will I go here. read more

The beard trim came out great. Looked quite sharp. The price can't be beat and there was a minimal wait time. Nice and clean shop with friendly barbers. The shave left a LOT to be desired. There were no compresses or product open to help w/ the pores. I was nicked twice on my adams apple and all that was used to stop the bleeding was a piece of paper towel, which took greater than 5 minutes. This has since left two scars on my adams apple, that even after a few months are still VERY apparent. In addition to the two cuts, the razor burn I suffered was pretty bad. A bunch of rude guys who do not listen to customers at all. I sat and watched them for 15 minutes and customers were treated as if these guys did them a favor by cutting their hair. I estimate I've had well over 800 haircuts in my time and this was the quickest(I've never been to Supercuts) and most painful. Anas used clippers when I asked him to use scissors and it was "whiz bang thank you man" . His hard bristle brush was harsh on my scalp. I have a robotic haircut, This well reviewed, attractive and clean looking shop was empty with only one barber when I entered mid morning on a Wednesday. That alone should have made me wary. I was greeted with a silent smile and a hand gesture and it was downhill from there on. My usual barbershop,always welcoming, less than 3 miles distant, would have 3 or 4 barbers and several waiting customers at this time of day. Just started going to Sal's on a fluke because open on Monday when my regular barber was closed. And now Sal is my regular, and I've gone back 6 times. Best cut I've had after trying 4 barbers in Newton. Price is right, he always has soccer or politics or other sports on TV, and is very interesting to speak to given his back ground. He and his wife live in Newton, so he is a local guy to support. I highly recommend, especially now when you can walk in so easily.
