Our last day on the island; we had some time before our ferry home so we decided to check out two more spots. First up was Salt Spring Island Ales. They're the only brewery on the island. We dropped in on an early Monday (around 11:00am) and were the first customers of the day. We'd tried earlier to visit (on a Sunday afternoon) but there was a massive line/wait. Walk up the stairs to get your beers, then enjoy on the shaded tree patio outside. You're allowed to bring in your own snacks. There were 6 beers on tap so we opted for a flight to try most of them. Flights are cheap and bottles range from $7.12 to $8.15. They also had a few canned options ($3.75 to $4.50). - Flight ($8.00 for 5) - we tried the heather ale, golden ale, earl grey IPA, dry porter and espresso milk stout. Our favourite was surprisingly the espresso milk stout; tasted like a nitro coffee. Earl grey IPA was decent but light on the earl grey flavour. Heather and golden ales were similar but the latter more hoppy. Standard beers at SSIA but nothing stood out to us.

Really enjoyed the vibe here. You get served at the top level of the house in the trees. I got two tasting flights with sours, porters, IPAs and lagers. Snagged two four packs to go!

Giving a 4/5 for being the only brewery on the island. Nice outdoor space, though was too crowded for us when we were there on a Friday afternoon. We're not big beer drinkers, but did enjoy the dry porter, nettle, and earl grey IPA. Intimate indoor tasting room, up a steep flight of stairs, tucked back in the woods.

Our friend took us here for great local craft beer. Very nice drinking tasty beer with a bunch of friends at outside picnic table. Everybody ordered sampler which comes with 5 different flavors of your choice :)

Interesting beer. 5 small glasses of different types of beer in a basket but you can buy in cans or bottles. There's caps, t-shirts, small or large glasses, and even beer soap (pretty neat heh)! Nice service and fast. FRESH BEER!! They got a picnic area outside where it's dog friendly and you can drink or bring your own snacks. They have a bit of small changes for the beer flavours from time to time so it's not always fully those 5 kinds of beers on the menu.

This is definitely one of the more off-the-beaten-path craft breweries we've been to, but well worth the trip! We each had a beer flight (5 glasses, which is a departure from the usual 4-beer flights one usually sees) so between the two of us, we were able to try most of the lineup. It's great to see a few truly different beers, including one made with local nettles and one with heather. The Earl Grey IPA was an overall favourite, something really out of the ordinary, very flavourful and drinkable. The creme brulee stout was super dessert-y - I'd like to try it over ice cream! We enjoyed our beer in the small but lovely outdoor space, and left with several bombers and a four-pack of the Earl Grey. Our only regret was that they were out of the hazy IPA, which was an outstanding example of this type of beer.

    Cute tasting room.

Good selection of beers, cute tasting room, friendly staff; I like this place! We dropped in for a tasting and tried a selection of beers ranging from golden ale to IPA to porter. They also had Kombucha on tap! We left with a few bottles and some merchandise (they have a nice selection of hats and shirts). Big props to the folks behind their branding; SSI Ales' growlers and bottles are beautiful.

It was a perfect way to spend a few hours. It was a pleasant Spring afternoon and it was busy. There is seating indoors and outdoors. We chose seats at the window indoors. Once a big crowd left, it was a lot more pleasant for us -- we like a bit of space and quiet brewery whenever possible. It seems timing, depending on what you prefer is the key to success when visiting here. The beers were delicious. I went with a dark beer, high abv. It was the Doppelback. My husband had a saison Brett for ironic reasons. They were both delicious. It was so lovely just hanging out and enjoying the brewery. Staff were friendly and seemed like they loved every bit of their job. The washrooms were clean. There was a Mac and Cheese pop up stand/truck. Families ordered from it while we were there and the kids sure seemed to enjoy it. Parking can be tricky when it's busy. We ended up parking on the side of the road. Who cares, though. The beers were worth it! See website for more details.
