A brewery in a little enchanted forest in Salt Spring?? Yea, sign me up! We love breweries and after driving through the forest we stumbled upon this place. Incredible view and layout. Picnic tables throughout plus a patio outside. You do need to be able to climb stairs to go into the place to order. Good selection. Clean bathroom. You can sit inside as well if you don't want to be out in nature. They sell small eats like hotdogs, etc. Our server was friendly, she seems to be manning the place all on her own bring beers up and down the stairs. A must try when visiting this sweet place. read more

A nice quiet escape to enjoy some beers on Salt Spring Island! My wife and I enjoyed the variety of beers that they offered. I especially enjoyed their crème brûlée vanilla stout that is also available in bombers. The location is quiet and tucked away on the hillside. Unfortunately they were restocking merchandise the next day so we couldn't get the hoodie my wife had her eye on. Can't wait to come back and sip on some more beers (or full pours of a few ciders) and tour the facility to see their brewing process and the natural spring where they source their water. read more

Went to this brewery for a change of pace and after talking to some people we met camping. This is a very rustic brewery. The bar is actually up a steep and narrow flight of steps, kind of in a treehouse type structure. They have quite a large selection of beers plus packaged snacks like popcorn for sale. The prices are reasonable. All the seating is outside in a forested area. There are a couple of metal patio tablea and chairs, picnic tablea and then tables with stumps for seats. Choode your stump wisely as some are more level than others. Its not that sunny here so best to come esrlier rather than later in the day. This place has a cool atmosphere with old timey music. Our last day on the island; we had some time before our ferry home so we decided to check out two more spots. First up was Salt Spring Island Ales. They're the only brewery on the island. We dropped in on an early Monday (around 11:00am) and were the first customers of the day. We'd tried earlier to visit (on a Sunday afternoon) but there was a massive line/wait. Walk up the stairs to get your beers, then enjoy on the shaded tree patio outside. You're allowed to bring in your own snacks. There were 6 beers on tap so we opted for a flight to try most of them. Flights are cheap and bottles range from $7.12 to $8.15. They also had a few canned options ($3.75 to $4.50). - Flight ($8.00 for 5) - we tried the heather ale, golden ale, earl grey IPA, dry porter and espresso milk stout. Our favourite was surprisingly the espresso milk stout; tasted like a nitro coffee. Earl grey IPA was decent but light on the earl grey flavour. Heather and golden ales were similar but the latter more hoppy. Standard beers at SSIA but nothing stood out to us. read more

Nothing truly special about this place other than the scenery . The tasting room is always to navigate with a hill to climb and then a set of steep single person stairs . The signs say wait for red light to enter exit , but red light was never used and people where getting clumped up in a very cramped stairwell . Not sure whether they should be coming or going. I tasting room staff on hand for a very busy summer afternoon , did. Or explain flights well and did not or could not hear my preferences through the masks and plexiglass (not truly her fault ) All in all the Creme Brûlée stout was the only beer worth tasting and they didn't have it on tap . A really lovely spot. It's an eight minute walk from the bus and the driver will stop for you even though I don't think it's a stop. You can drink inside (second story, no accessible) or outside. The tables outside have a nice forest view and lots of shade. The beer itself is good. They don't serve food so the bartender told me he couldn't t serve me two flights, so I got one and another beer. Loved the sour especially. Server was pleasantly conversational and told me a lot about the island. read more

Our friend took us here for great local craft beer. Very nice drinking tasty beer with a bunch of friends at outside picnic table. I can't believe they make 6 different beers in this small place on the hill! And the sampler of 5 was exceptionally good quality. So much flavour that we bought 3 big bottles. Only downside was they are expanding and the excavator made a mess of the parking lot. My day old tires looked pretty ugly and had to wait until the mini holiday was over. read more

I'm giving this a 2 star because of the customer service experience. The ales were excellent - we had the Golden and Heather. BUT the seating area to enjoy the ales was woefully inadequate. The main Seating area was full and the auxiliary area had newly deposited dog crap that rendered the place uninhabitable. We headed down to the parking area to finish our beers and were accosted by a surly customer service representative who informed us that we couldn't stay there and had to return to the aforementioned areas or the over crowded tap room. Interesting beer. 5 small glasses of different types of beer in a basket but you can buy in cans or bottles. There's caps, t-shirts, small or large glasses, and even beer soap (pretty neat heh)! Nice service and fast. FRESH BEER!! They got a picnic area outside where it's dog friendly and you can drink or bring your own snacks. They have a bit of small changes for the beer flavours from time to time so it's not always fully those 5 kinds of beers on the menu. read more

This is definitely one of the more off-the-beaten-path craft breweries we've been to, but well worth the trip! We each had a beer flight (5 glasses, which is a departure from the usual 4-beer flights one usually sees) so between the two of us, we were able to try most of the lineup. It's great to see a few truly different beers, including one made with local nettles and one with heather. The Earl Grey IPA was an overall favourite, something really out of the ordinary, very flavourful and drinkable. The creme brulee stout was super dessert-y - I'd like to try it over ice cream! We enjoyed our beer in the small but lovely outdoor space, and left with several bombers and a four-pack of the Earl Grey. Our only regret was that they were out of the hazy IPA, which was an outstanding example of this type of beer. read more

A beautiful little home up to the tasting lounge. There were free samples, but by the time we got there on a Sunday (before noon!) they had sold out of half of the beer! The customer service was great, the girl at the counter knew a lot about all the beer and was able to answer all of our questions. The labels are really well done, with cute little jokes on the back of each bottle. The beer was also amazing. If only I could bring it on the plane with me. read more

They also had Kombucha on tap! We left with a few bottles and some merchandise (they have a nice selection of hats and shirts). We found this brewery because a worker on the ferry to the island told us about it. We were on bikes so it was a little risky striking out based on her vague directions, but a local brewery is a local brewery, it must be explored. We found the turn off the main road and struggled up quite a steep hill and were then relieved to see the sign for the brewery. We had a very good time tasting four different ales from a blonde to a porter. The heather ale was especially interesting. The barmaid was friendly and fun to talk to. There is no food offered, but there is a bathroom, the cutest outhouse you can imagine (seriously). Well worth the trip, even on a bicycle. Drink safely my friends. read more

The staff was great even though we rolled in right before closing, but they still let us taste their beers (for free!) after we had made a trek all the way from NC mind you. How about a beer in the woods!? The brews are malty and interesting but what is compelling is the setting - you walk up to what seems like a forest cabin equipped with beer taps and merch. You can only get tasting flights or purchase bomber bottles that you can have out on their downstairs picnic area. A perfect, quiet place for a beer. Will be back! read more

This is the most beautiful brewery I have been to. It's magical with the cedar touches, the wood, the lights in the trees and the forest setting. Excellent spot to drink beer with nature. It would be nice to have more seating inside for rainy days but not a big deal for me as it's also nice to stand and mingle. Delicious beer and staff was friendly as well. Hidden away with its rustic charm and great tasting beer, this is one stop that you should go out of the way for. Even better, free tastings on Fridays & Saturdays! I personally like their Brilla seasonal beer but it's now onto a new season which doesn't disappoint either! Handy for me, they fill growlers. In addition to the friendly and knowledgeable service, they have cool merchandise too (branded growlers, glassware, shirts and snapbacks). Only wish they'd offer food or snacks. I enjoyed our little side trip to the tasting room. Nice family of brews and a pleasant reception. I especially liked the full-bodied Golden ale, followed by the ESB - dry, with a long tale. The IPA is pretty routine, and that makes me wonder why each and every micro-brewery feels the need to have an IPA. My only critique of SSIA, however, is that tasting is expensive. Tasting should be free, as the best marketing - I'd certainly try, buy and recommend more if it were! A small flight of 4-oz tastes comes to over $9, which, I imagine, makes it a "one and done" proposition for lost of visitors. In my humble opinion... read more
