Our last stop before boarding the ferry at Swartz Bay to Vancouver: We had an enjoyable time at Vancouver Island Brewery while waiting for the ferry. Lucky for us, we were able to savor the last few days of warm sunshine on their patio. We went during happy hour and flights were only $5. There were a lot of choices including Lemon Drop Star Anise Sour and Merri Berri Cider. The food menu is limited. We ordered a bag of chips and a jar of salsa and both were very fresh and tasty. One jar was not enough. We ordered another one to finish off the rest of the chips. They also allowed us to bring outside food to pair with their full flavoured beers. These guys got a 5 star bump for the vibe and the fact that they sell limited releases on site! We wandered in during our beer(ish) tour and we're happy to learn they have tastings available! They were offering a total of 8 beers which made it perfect for two of us to come in! Sample from lightest to dark and with explanations of each, it was an excellent $5 each! They have a focus on hoppy ales but also had some fun imperials! The Imperial peach IPA was a "grab one for later" good beer and the NW pale ale was delicious! The actual bar wasn't huge but had a great feel and was roomy enough for about 30 people. We had a nice chat with some folks at our table and after the flights bought a couple for Home. The Imperial Peach IPA was magic and the Orange Cherry Rye ale - their take on a Manhattan was not as epic, but still good! Overall - pretty solid beers available here. The Lychee Saison and the Hazy IPA were both phenomenal. Admittedly some of the others left something to be desired which is why I'm hesitant to give 5 stars. Bonus points for a nice and bright tap room with adequate seating and bathrooms, and centrally located making it an easy stop among a day of brewery tours. Worth a stop! read more

Nice brewery with solid beers. My husband and I tried two flights to sample all eight beers on tap. Most of what we tasted had good body and flavor. The Hazy IPA was probably my favorite . The service was super friendly and they were willing to answer any questions we had. The space however could use more seats. Most of the tables downstairs lacked stools, only one table had a bench. Unless you count the four chairs upstairs. The beer is definitely worth coming here to check out. read more

Brewery tours begin @ 4pm on Fridays and Saturdays. You can call ahead and put your name and party down to secure your spot since they're relatively small groups. Our tour guide was fantastic. I think her name is Jessica but could be wrong. Anyways, she knew everything and anything about the brewery! We've learned more about the brewing process from this tour than any of our other brewery visits in Texas. She welcomes questions and has a sweet way of not making people feel stupid - that takes skill! Tours and four small samples of any beer of your choice is $7. For just $3 more, you can take home one of their pints. The Stormwatcher was SO delicious! I think they said it was seasonal and they don't distribute to the US. Bummer, but I'm glad to have stumbled upon this place. read more

If I had to sum up Vancouver Island Brewery in two words, they'd be "Approachable Variety". And the key word is the second of the two. Variety. The tap room is clean, modern, elegant. Braenden behind the counter is engaging, knowledgeable, and super passionate for beer in general. Multiple styles, executed well and clean. A few unique, or rarer to see styles such as the Dark Lager, an uncommon element in the West Coast beer scene. A session IPA with all the nose and flavour you'd expect of its bigger cousin. (I may well like the session more than it's bigger cousin!) The taproom is large, spacious, plenty of room, it also provides the usual growler fills, but it also provides an uncommon bonus, a great bottle shop. Tried it? loved it? Growler too much? Okay grab a six pack. The friendly staff can easily help you pass hours enjoying the beer and beer geeking out. Just down the street from Phillips, you really should stop at both when in Victoria. read more

It had been almost 10 years since my last Victoria visit. Pleased to say the beer scene is drastically improved. VIB is one of the reasons why. Rapidly expanding its space to be a destination but don't wait. There were several beers that were flat out delicious including the Lager, Cervesa, the gose, and Hazy IPA. I had NO idea how many breweries were on Vancouver Island. This place was by far one of my favorite stops. The staff were great at explaining their beers and the tasting was fair at $5 for four samples (I think). There was a tour group right as I was finishing so it got a little busy but they still made sure I was taken care of while I finished my tasting. My husband and I (who are both 30yo) walked into this place feeling very very old. We talked to someone who worked there and he said that one of the international schools nearby will have their students come by for tastings. I can't blame the place for my aging, but everyone looked over ten years younger. My aging issues put aside, the beer was good. The tasting was only $5 (Canadian! so that's less than USD). You can't complain getting four tastings for five bucks. Some folks came in to get their HUGE growlers filled, for $10. That's crazy cheap. The folks who worked there were very friendly. read more

Just finished a great tour at the Vancouver Island Brewery. The staff was friendly, the information was informative (as information should be) and included a great history of the business of beer making in the area. The groups are limited to 30 people so you can actually hear what is being said. Pay attention to the signs and you might learn how Chuck Norris becomes so powerful. For 7$ you can have a tour, and for 10$ you get a pint glass with the logo included. 1-3:00pm Fridays and Saturdays. If you want to see beer in production, go for Friday. If you want to hear what she is saying, take a Saturday. The best part though was the beer! They are not stingy with samples and it actually is GOOD. read more

Fun atmosphere, good beers. We are from out of town and the server was great giving us tips on what's around. We are from Portland and love beer, so having someone who knew the industry and everything about the beers was extremely refreshing. Ordered two kegs for a wedding-- which were good, and came at a good price. The beer was fine, kegs were ready on time, and all equipment worked. What I really, really, really didn't like, however, was returning the kegs and instead of being refunded my $310 in deposits, being charged an extra $485, with nothing other than a "may take a few weeks to get that money back to you." Meanwhile, the deposit has yet to be refunded, because they evidently ran it as a transaction rather than as a pre-auth. So, we have about $800 tied up while we wait for an undefined period of time for it to get back to us. Not. Great. read more

We stopped in here today as we had a few hours left before boarding the Clipper. It's about a mile walk from the harbor. Boy are we glad we came! They just happened to be sampling a cask version of one of their seasonal beers, which was hoppy and delicious. For $5 you can also get a flight of 4 beers on tap. My favorite was the Hermann's dark lager, which I understand was their flagship beer. We found the three employees there to be friendly and helpful, and even offered us advice on some local places to eat. It appears they offer tours for $2 extra on top of the flight, although we opted not to partake. We will definitely be back! read more
