Trolling a ballyhoo with a skirt is my usual method of fishing and though I've caught plenty of dolphin (the fish dolphin, not the mammal type), the one termed Mahi Mahi in restaurants in order to justify charging a higher price, I wanted a method more targeted toward dolphin fishing. So what I really needed was to speak with someone who would know all about it, know what I needed to target dolphin and be able to provide me with the proper tackle for the job. So what to do? I could go to a big box store like Bass Pro. They'd certain have whatever I needed but have my doubts they could answer my questions about it, help me select what is proper or tell me how to use it effectively. So, this is where the smaller custom tackle shops come in and what lead me to SaltH2o Custom Tackle. When walked into SaltH2o Custom Tackle I was warmly greeted and after looking around and chatting with the owner, Kevin, I could immediately tell I had come to the right place and that Kevin, with over a decade of experience with custom created fishing tackle knew about everything I need to know. So, I told him my situation and he immediately gave me his good advice and began rigging up a custom rig specifically for dolphin. As he did it, he explained everything, the reason for the colors of the skirt like surface lure, the hooks he selected, the leader lines, the necessity of a bearing swivel etc. When he finished, I had a custom, literally created from the ground on up, specific for dolphin rig together with all the info on how to use it plus the additional information of where and when the dolphin might be hitting. This is all something you're just not going to be able to get or have done at big box sports stores like Dick's, Bass Pro, etc., and not even at those smaller tackle shops that don't have the knowhow, experience or engage custom work. As an aside example, while I was there, two gentlemen who work aboard transatlantic cargo ships came in wanting to fish off of the cargo ships but needed information on how to do that. Without hesitation, Kevin told them what they needed (braided not monofilament lines) and made up fishing rigs for them with that specific use and purpose in mind. Like where else would you be able to get info on fishing off of cargo ships in the middle of the ocean? Another good thing about SaltH2o Custom Tackle is their inventory. It's all there, all nicely displayed, everything you might need including a freezer full of frozen baits, and if isn't there, they can get it for you. But still, the best is the information you can get, enough of it and good enough that I've come to believe the owner who says "I have saltwater in my DNA." LOL! read more

Just discovered this place by my job. They have a nice selection of items. They have all of your typical weights, lines, hooks and lures but also some styles and sizes I haven't really seen at other shops. I really like that they also do custom stuff which is something I will consider in the future because I'm sure any pre-rigged lure they can come up with for me will be better than I can. They have clothing and fishing glasses. They have a nice selection of poles. With and without reels. The guy who was there was very helpful and friendly. Definitely appreciated my business which is nice to see because you don't see it often these days. He also mentioned that they do sell bait. I like the layout and look of the shop too. Not that it really matters but I've always gone to fishing stores that really didn't have a style but they have a nice setup with music and a big screen. The guy offered me beer while I was shopping which I later read that he has a cold keg on tap. Definitely a unique and cool idea for beer drinkers. read more

I have gone to LMR custom tackle for the past 6 years to fill all of my orders via charter boats and private boats. LMR LACKS in customer service as well as not having exactly what you need. I went to SaltH20 and was greeted by a friendly face with great customer service. They were the only tackle center that carried 64oz trolling leads and the owner Kevin was not only professional but knowledgeable about what we needed and gave advice regarding the type of fishing we were about to pursue.
