Cobbler has become my favourite midweek haunt for a quick cocktail (or three) with friends, and it just does not disappoint. The staff are gifted when it comes to their craft, and are gracious in recommending a new drink, or trying a different mix of an old favourite. It's a strictly BYO Food affair, but it only adds to the charm of the space. There's an upstairs lounge with recliners, and a internal deck that overlooks the space below. With drinks named like 'The men of the night's watch', and the 'Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster' it's clear Cobbler doesn't take itself too seriously, and it leaves it up to its drinks to speak for it. Parking is a challenge, but hey, welcome to West End. If you're up for a quiet drink, or a fancy yourself a whiskey enthusiast, I challenge you to find a more enjoyable place to sip, contemplate the world, or just people watch.

They have an ample parking lot, but during peak times expect someone on the gate to check your membership as they try to avoid overflow from the shopping centre. I haven't been for a while, but went to a party in one of the function rooms and signed up while I was there. $5 membership, which auto renews for free every year so long as you make a few visits during the year. The catered food was delicious, but I do recall the food in the restaurants, cafes and bars being pretty good too from previous visits. Is it trendy? Hell no. But if you want some cheap drinks, maybe catch the footy on the big screen and have a decent, filling meal without breaking the budget, it's not a bad place to pop down to.

The first issue arose when it was served: it's huge and there is no cutlery. You can't cut it into slices or halves. If you're reasonably petite (like me) and have correspondingly small hands and mouth, you might struggle to eat the big, dripping with fat, oozing mustard and sauce cheeseburger. You basically just have to smoosh it at your face .... At which point it quickly begins to fall apart. The meat slid out the bottom, the pickles popped out the top - it was awful. Not to mention I was covered all over my face and hands in oily smelly mustard. Four napkins later I was barely half way through when I saw the final straw: the inside of the patty was red raw. Nope, no way, nuh uh. This isn't steak freaking tartare. It's a burger, and it should be cooked through. I couldn't finish. Im now feeling quite unwell from the oil and sauce overload. With Archive Fine Books just up the road, I highly recommend combining a wander through the shelves and shelves of old books followed by coffee and cake in Cocoawoo--makes for a nice afternoon adventure in the city.
