Tranquil spot located deep in the Sugarloaf key, beyond the mansions dotted along the drive. Their is NO CELL SERVICE here so put the phone away and enjoy the view. Great spot to relax and fish as well.

Go figure... this was once the home of some illegal drug operation that our government took care of and then just blacked out the windows and conducted some sort of government operation (perhaps DEA or ATF)... quit the valuable piece of property too (point lot overlooking the ocean with access to Lower Sugarloaf Sound through the channel that passes under Old State Road A4).... It was kinda creepy to see dark tinted vans and trucks here now and then; along with the blacked out windows... and then one day I rode my bike by as I often did and the building was demolished and the site was just left with rubble, loose drainage rock, lots of weeds and a few coconut palms. Not long after that we heard rumor of the county taking over and they want to develop a park but have limited funds so volunteers were expected to provide labor... granted, I don't know if the rumors were accurate but not soon later I arrive on my bike once again to find the rubble and weeds gone, fresh drainage rock covered the site, the boat ramp was cleaned up, a small gazebo was constructed and the gates were open. We returned often to fish along the rock jetty wall (nice snapper were often caught here)... eventually a picnic table was placed under the gazebo and a informational board was erected to identify various birds, animals, fish and vegetation. Unfortunately, as much as we enjoyed the place we started to realize very little was being done to maintain the park and the place was infested with tons of weeds... the gates were kept locked these days; still open to guests but they didn't want vehicles driving to use the boat ramp (the boat ramp was really for kayaks (not for any trailered boats, jet skies or similar). I heard more rumor that the County expected the locals to maintain the park but again, don't know the validity of that. Great location but lack of maintenance prevents a desire to return !

If you are in search of a secluded park that happens to be ideal for inconspicuous fishing, Sammy Creek Landing is your future home-away-from-home. Snapper, barracuda and crab dominate the scene. Don't expect a prize-winning fish here. A few folks were swimming underneath the overpass, while a few folks were camped out on the park benches for most of the day. You won't be bothered by deranged locals nor exposed to ear-splitting pandemonium. SCL is a retreat for those who appreciate the great outdoors. Grab a line, a kayak or your dog, because your tucked-away sanctuary awaits.

THIS IS WHAT KEYS LIVING IS ALL ABOUT…read more I've decided to post a couple outer sandbar Keys frequented by the locals, as it seems to be a recurring question that pops up by visitors. MARVIN KEY Longitude: -81.6445331 Latitude: 24.7115303 If you're wondering where all the locals disappear to on weekends, chances are if they know someone with a motor boat, they are at Marvin Key. This is a popular locals island and sandbar in the outback area off the lower Florida Keys. The only way to get here is by boat. Having had the opportunity to go here a few times already, it is absolute paradise. The sandbars are quite large around the island for walking, kayaking or just wading in the water with your beach chair and a beverage. You can also stroll along the shore with picture opportunities at every turn. Make sure you pack plenty of water, sunscreen, your noodles and even an umbrella if you plan on spending the day. It is not uncommon for waders to visit from boat to boat, so you just may meet some new friends along the way. The age range for visitors at Marvin Key is around 35 and up. The 35 and younger single crowd tend to migrate to Snipes Key which is in the general vicinity. Just like many of the other outback islands and sandbars around the Keys, knowing the area and navigation is crucial to avoid running aground, getting stuck, and most importantly, preventing damage to our reefs and ecosystem. If you choose to venture to this location, be sure to bring a local guide that knows the waters. I'm so glad we did! The boat was equipped with everything we needed - had a bathroom, mini fridge for your lunch, they provided a cooler with plenty of water for the day which was very nice. We had fun catching a variety of fish, including mahi mahi, Bonita, one little tuna and the biggie: a white marlin, which was an unexpected surprise for us all and the highlight of our outing. Jesse worked tirelessly the entire time and it was an overall fantastic day. Once we returned back to the dock, he filleted our mahi for us and we took it over to Kaya Island eats per his recommendation which was the perfect end to a fun, tiring but successful day on the water. If you want a great day with nice, knowledgeable folks who will work hard to make your day memorable, I highly recommend booking with Linda D. UPDATE: Went out again on Wednesday and had an equally fantastic time w/captain Billy & Jesse. We caught several mackerel, king fish (including one very large one) and a few barracuda - the weather was beautiful and it was fun to catch such a different variety of fish over our couple of outings - our dinner was again delicious :) We will for sure be back!

** Amazing Day with Salty Goat Deep Sea Fishing Charter**…read more On Sunday, March 1, our group had the absolute best experience with **Salty Goat Deep Sea Fishing Charter**. There were six people in our party plus two additional guests, and from start to finish the trip was incredible. Our captain, Ashley, and first mate, Paul, were fantastic. The entire five-hour trip was fun, relaxing, and full of great moments. On the way out to our private fishing spot--where there were *plenty* of fish--we saw so much wildlife including turtles, dolphins, jellyfish, and pelicans. It was an amazing way to start the trip. Once we reached the fishing spot, Ashley and Paul were incredibly helpful and patient, guiding us through the process and sharing their knowledge about the different fish we caught. Thanks to them, we ended up with a cooler full of fish! They were also very patient with me as I kept getting my line tangled and "making a nest" with my reel--LOL. The whole atmosphere on the boat was perfect. We had great music playing, lots of laughs, and really fun conversations. Ashley and Paul are clearly experienced, knowledgeable, and genuinely enjoy what they do, which made the trip even better. One of the most memorable moments came on the way back when we noticed a young pelican struggling in the water. Ashley and Paul carefully rescued it, brought it onto the boat, and contacted Fish and Wildlife so the bird could be picked up safely when we returned to the dock. It was amazing to see how much they care about the wildlife around them. To top off an already incredible day, when we got back to the dock Ashley and Paul cleaned and filleted all of our fish and packaged it up for us. We brought it to a local restaurant that prepared one of the best meals we've ever had. This charter is the **real deal**--a knowledgeable, fun, and laid-back crew who clearly love the ocean and sharing the experience with others. We had such a great time and will *definitely be back to fish with Ashley again*. Highly recommend!

But at the end of the day, this is one of my favorite places to spend time. Some people just don't get how special these protected areas are... or just how vast it is. The area is encompasses an area that is over 8 miles long on Sugarloaf Key (accessed from mile marker 17 and partially from mile marker 20) and includes a lot of spots that locals visit often including Burn Out Bridge (aka End Of The Road), Loop Road Trail, Sammy Creek Landing, Old Overseas Nature Trail (west end of Old State Road 4A), Jumping Bridge, and the Secret Beach Old State Road 4A passes through most of it and there are a few residences as well but majority of the area is mangroves and open water. There is plenty of area to support incredible wildlife; you may not see much of it visiting but after years of bicycling and walking all the trails and focal points I've been lucky enough to see plenty; come common and some rare to see... in addition to the common sightings like raccoons, snapper, tarpon and crabs, we've seen key deer, spoonbills, horseshoe crabs, bonnet head sharks, bald eagles and other birds of prey. Park at the corner of Old State Road 4A and Sugarloaf Boulevard and walk east past the vehicle barriers to walk to Jumping Bridge (its just what is sounds like) and if feeling adventurous then continue onto Loop Road Trail (stop at the open water areas for a dip in the water), find the Secret Beach and walk the nature trail to Burn-Out Bridge (and watch the boats travel between Sugarloaf and the Atlantic) ... Or drive past the intersection to the west and stop by Sammy Creek Landing... it's a park with a boat launch, decent fishing and a good spot to bring lunch/picnic.... Or go onto my favorite and drive (or bike) all the way to the west end of Old State Road 4A, park the car and continue onto the Old Overseas Nature Trail. It's a very long hike to the end but it is gorgeous with some areas in the shade (tree canopy over the trail creating a tunnel like experience) and a lot in the sun too; great views of the water and mangroves. For those that have sweet blood... bring insect repellent/lotion
