The 3A side is fenced, and there's a fence that separates the area from the parking lot, but the back side against the woods is open. So, it really depends on your pooch! This property exists not for visitor entertainment and indulgence but to protect and preserve wildlife . Sorry for the rant - a lot of people get upset that they don't have a Disney world experience and maybe that's because they don't truly understand and /or respect the purpose of this refuge. The refuge is located in the Lower Florida Keys (Big Pine), a hundred mile stretch of islands that extends south and west from south Florida. Habitats in the refuge consist of pine rockland forests, tropical hardwood hammocks, freshwater wetlands, salt marsh wetlands, and mangrove forests. National Key Deer Refuge is home to more than 20 endangered and threatened plant and animal species, including the well known Key Deer. Please note there are no big signs that indicate the area is a refuge . There is residential neighborhoods and public sector businesses throughout so it's not like a sectioned off park . The wildlife are not in cages on display . They are in their natural habitats within the refuge and you may not get to see them. There is the Blue Hole you can visit and May spot something but please don't harass the wildlife or enter people's yards because you see deer grazing . This is the only refuge in the keys that is accessible by car while being open to the public so please respect the wildlife and the people who live here . The visitor center is a great place to start to learn more about the refuge and the Key deer. If you have a Blue Goose national wildlife refuge passport you can get it stamped here for all the Key refuges. They have very clean restrooms , small gift shop , informative displays , maps and staff on hand to answer questions. Manage your expectations and you will enjoy this area !

Sammy Creek Landing is no exception. Basically it was once upon a time a home but today it's a local park but we can't figure out if it's a county park or from the state. We always wonder because one year it's nice and relaxing and another year it's overgrown with weeds and kind of sad. I remember when it had no parking (limited to parking on Old State Road 4A), and nowadays it has a parking lot and it's landscaped and it's pretty clean. Nonetheless the place is nice... and I cherish the memories I have of this place.

Both the beach and campgrounds reopened in 2022. This beach is also a long stretch of sand and is located just past Loggerhead Beach. I have heard great things, and in photos, it was great, but when we reached, there were lots of seagrass on the shore, like really a lot, and it was disappointing to see, so we turned back to Loggerhead Beach. It offers scenic views, access to natural areas like parks and wildlife refuges, and is a linear state park with various services. While much of the trail is paved and safe, some sections require users to walk alongside the highway shoulder, especially on busier bridges like the Seven Mile Bridge. Highly recommended.

Great memories as a kid driving over the original Seven Mile Bridge, which was partially demolished…read moremany years ago and no longer used for transportation. However, the rebuilt historic bridge is a visually magnificent car ride with green water on both sides. When driving south toward Key West, portions of the original dilapidated bridge is still viewable for great pictures and fishing. FYI: If you are driving behind a tanker truck or camper, it will seem like the seven mile stretch is forever.

And he genuinely seems like he's give you the shirt off his back. It's a little bit of a drive for us but 100% worth it due to his hospitality. We've already recommended them to our friends who plan on visiting. Beautiful place and in a very safe neighborhood right down the road from the sheriffs station.
