I felt the amount requested for preparing a simple probate petition was excessive, and even the judge agreed the fee should be reduced. As a parent trying to protect my daughter's inheritance, it was upsetting to feel as though her estate was being depleted by unnecessary legal costs. Our original attorney, Kevin Childress, stated he was overloaded with cases and transferred us to Mr. Underwood. When I expressed concerns about the fees, it was implied that I was seeking free services, which was never the case. I simply wanted fair and reasonable representation. After receiving payment from my daughter's estate on two separate occasions, Mr. Underwood later chose to withdraw from representing us. Attempts to communicate directly were unsuccessful, and I was instead referred to another attorney, Danielle Woods. Overall, this experience left me feeling frustrated and taken advantage of. Or, perhaps, to be told that she wouldn't qualify no matter what the app said. Trying to follow the accepted wisdom to "get professional help when you don't know what you're doing". In my experience, when I've had questions about how I should proceed with legal matters, attorneys have always been willing to sit down and discuss the the situation and offer guidance - some times with a fee, some times not. In this case, the receptionist was adamant that I must have submitted an application to SS before they'd talk to me. Because she was missing the point of needing to specify what I should say on the application BEFORE I submitted it, I pressed her a little. In response she said "I can pass you over to intake, but she's going to tell you the same thing." Not very professional. Not at all helpful.
