The Motor Transport Museum is a free museum, however a donation is suggested and very much appreciated. The museum is run by volunteers and is only open on Saturday's and the 1st Sunday of each month. I never caught the names of the volunteers that were on site when we visited, but they were very nice and full of knowledge about the history of the cars and the iconic Mill building. When you arrive, you will go into the Mill. They have a guest book that they will ask you to sign and there is free bottle water available to all guest and other soda and snacks available for purchase. From there the volunteer will give you a tour of the Mill and tell you all the history of what they do there. It is a great little tour and we appreciated it so much. After the tour, you are free to roam around and explore the property. There are a ton of unique cars, truck, buses and other machinery all around. You can easily spend an hour to a couple of hours here. HIGHLY recommend a visit. We paired this adventure up with a ride on the Pacific Southwest Railway which is about a mile and a half down the road. Makes for a great day trip for the family.

I have to say it's still incredibly beautiful in the evening, watching the sunset. It's definitely one of the best views around and getting a chance to see the stars so brilliantly is a must as the pollution is more limited up there, making for clearer skies. The elevation is obviously higher, so dress in layers. I didn't drive up here this time, which was really nice, I had the chance to catch up on my sleep. It's not that bad of a drive though. We stayed nearby overnight, but it's worth the drive either way imo. There aren't that many places like this, especially in underdeveloped areas. The Pine House Cafe & Tavern is nearby on the Sunrise Highway if you get hungry afterwards. Be forewarned there's a bit of a walk to the top of the road from the visitor parking lot to the visitor's center. Adjacent to the visitor's center are the two apartments for visiting astronomers, a lecture hall, a kitchen for public gatherings, and the museum/gift shop. The Mount Laguna Observatory is owned and operated by SDSU under permit from the Cleveland National Forest. It's not unusual to see SDSU or local community college students here working on research projects or school activities. They do have a dedicated visitor's telescope and deck for public viewing. There are other telescope domes that are not available to the general public, but if you're willing to get a graduate degree in astronomy from SDSU I'm guessing you can get in there..

We saw the sign for the Imperial Valley Desert Museum on our last trip and it sounded interesting...but I didn't really expect that much being so far away from any towns. We weren't sure we were even heading toward the museum since there was no sign and road was gravel and bumpy. But around the corner there was the terra cotta roof of the museum. No sign for the entrance either but they were glass doors so in we went. No one was at the desk but there were people looking at exhibits so we went in. The museum was not large but had areas with different exhibits and historic artifacts. The exhibits were very informative and well done. They have a beautiful collection of pottery by the Kumeyaay, a local First Nation tribe (who had bands that covered north from Escondido to near Ensenada and east from Yuma, AZ. to the Pacific Ocean. There is a movie that explains how the different bands lived that was so wonderful and informative that I would watch again. We were there about an hour and didn't see everything in detail. I really enjoyed learning about the Kumeyaay people and the desert area of Imperial County area. We will definitely come back to go through it again. I highly recommend making the stop to see the museum.

For years, this museum sat vacant. Finally enough money was raised to build out the interior. When it opened, I just had to go see it. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. For its size, I was surprised to see the number of displays they had and the quality of them. They also have a nice bookstore with trail maps and other informative desert literature. If you've driven on interstate 8 eight between San Diego and Arizona, I'm sure you have seen this museum. It has an outdoor trail with many native plants. There's also shaded sitting areas. If you have an extra 30 minutes to an hour, drop by the Imperial Valley desert museum. I'm sure you would enjoy it.

Campo, California…read more The difference between Gaskill Stone Museum and the Mountain Empire Historical Society is that the Society overseers a handful of historical sites including the Gaskill Brothers Museum along with Camp Lockett, Campo Valley, and various other items in this border region that cover more than the Campo Valley areas. The structure used to be made out of wood, but, harsh fire fights forced the Gaskill Brothers to reconstruct into the bulletproof stone which is what the building is today. The bottom floor is dedicated to the convenient store, and several local things. The upper floor is dedicated as the Army's Regional Operating HQ. The upper museum is dedicated to the 1st, 10th, 11th and 28th Calvary from 1876 - 1944. Access/Roads: C Paved. CA Hwy 94 travels east and west along the Mexico border. Parking: F Enough parking for three or four cars. Distance: C Located between El Centro & San Diego. Tecate, Mexico is a few minutes away. It's not that far from civilization. Costs: A Free Nearby Attractions: -Pacific or Campo Rail Museum. -Historic Campo Valley Town. -Pacific Crest Hiking Trails. -Golden Acorn and Jamul Casinos are nearby. -The Campo Band of Mission Indian HQ is nearby. There IS dedicated parking for Bingo, reserved parking! The Bingo Hall has its own building with some slots in the lobby, snack bar, and a decent size restroom with plenty of stalls. BINGO ETIQUETTE Fair reminder, there is "Bingo Etiquette" - it's quiet as a damn library it was so uncomfortable to even speak or whisper. Our group was hushed by some random lady a few times and she snitched on us and staff (who seemed to be laid back) would occasionally mention in the prompt that everyone needs to be quiet (they didn't single us out but we knew that message was directed towards us). "Library Bingo" was so quiet, I could hear myself think that I was able to solve a coding conditional logic for work (that I been working on for days) in my head and write it down. PACKAGE DEALS This was overwhelming to understand. I just went with the flow of what everyone else was signing up for. Early Bird ($10) + 175 card ($40) + happy ball ($5) = adult fun with friends. DIGITAL VS. PAPER Next level Bingo! Received an iPad that basically does everything for you. The only action from you is type in your account number (received on your receipt after paying) and calling out "BINGO" if you win any of the games. Literally hands free and focus free - it's nice to eat, snack, try to whisper-converse amongst the group, do whatever. Yes, option to dab the paper oldskool if you like. FOOD AND DRINKS They don't tell you this but INSIDE the Bingo hall are free drinks (soda, coffee, water, etc.) . Don't buy drinks at the snack bar right outside before coming in. In addition, people bring their own snacks from home if you want to save money. But the snack bar was relatively cheap compared to the increase of food from inflation. Most of us got Nachos because it was the most for your buck. There is option to get Carne Asada or Chili and but default you get a mini bucket of cheese. BRING TUMS AND PEPCID AC - you are going to need it. B-I-N-G-O! So close yet so far. The night we went, the buyout was $750 per game. Wow! Other days it can be even higher. We were here for several hours playing Bingo and the Bingo games weren't just one stretch of line... Bingo came in different shapes and sizes. If I'm looking to kill time and be a mute, I could see myself coming here to do so (LOL). Sit, eat, and hope to win. Didn't win anything this night but maybe in the future. Honestly, with a group of people who like socializing this "Library Bingo" "SHHH Bingo" might be too quiet and you become the distracting background noise. Still, I could see myself returning - it was still fun!

We usually walk over there and get take out from one of the many places. Bingo staff are all very nice, friendly and helpful. We don't often win but always have a good time.
