A great venue. The interior architecture is phenomenal. Sound quality is very good. The floor is slightly slanted upward toward the back. There are little sections separated by railings, which add a little separation. We paid for the VIP up top (not the four-top tables). We could choose to sit on a counter/bar stool with a thin-line bar top. But, it was farther back and you looked down at the people in front of you. So we moved to the right side in a standing section. The best! On the rail. Had a table to set drinks on. Private bathroom for upper level guests. Way worth it. One thing I wish they did was sell the 4-tops in twos. They are great. It, it's not always easy getting four people together for a show. Oh. Parking is a breeze. I went to the Heated Rivalry Rave and I can say that was such a fun event. Purchasing tickets online was really easy and getting in was fast and efficient, I felt like everyone was working together to make it safe and easy. The venue itself is really huge, I've been for a couple podcast tours but it was always seated so getting to come where there was open floor was fun. Lots of space for dancing and letting our little hearts live in the music. Would totally come back or another event here! read more

I came here a month or two ago for a Morrissey cover band, and it was my first time at the Observatory. Overall, I really enjoyed it and would definitely come back for another show. The only downside was the bartender. Maybe she was just having a stressful night, but she was downright rude for no reason, which definitely stood out. Other than that, I had a great time. My only other minor complaint is that they only have the giant cans of seltzers. I'm a slow drinker, so by the time I'm halfway through, it's warm. Not a huge deal, just something to keep in mind. Was there for a concert and ordered chicken tenders and fyi they are huge! It's nice you can tell they use real chicken, looks like a whole butterflied breast so if you're not starving definitely split these, my friend and I wished we had shared one. I go to The Observatory North Park quite frequently and it's honestly one of my favorite venues in all of San Diego. I absolutely love the indoor Gothic theater look and atmosphere, it gives every show a special feel. The slanted floor is another huge plus because no matter where you're standing, you get a great view of the stage. The staff here is always so friendly and professional, but what really makes this place stand out is the security team. I can't say enough good things about them. I've attended concerts with a friend who needs to sit in the ADA section and the security staff has always gone above and beyond to make sure she is comfortable and taken care of. Tony, Alicia, Carlos, and Kyta are just a few of the amazing members of their security team who consistently make us feel welcome and safe. They're kind, attentive, and truly make every night out at The Observatory even better. I not only look forward to the shows themselves, but I genuinely look forward to seeing them. Another huge bonus is the amazing floor vented AC and everyone who knows me knows this is a huge deal for me. It keeps the venue cool and comfortable even in a packed crowd. They also have full bars and food available, which makes it easy to enjoy the night without having to leave the venue. Parking is convenient too. There is a parking structure right across the street and they even offer free parking if you're attending a concert. And to top it off, the North Park neighborhood around the venue is full of great restaurants and bars if you want to grab a bite or a drink before or after the show. Located in the heart of North Park on University Ave. and 29th St. surrounded by many eateries and bars. Parking was a bit of a challenge; the 29th St. structure was full when we arrived on a packed Friday evening, we found the nearest open spot about four blocks away. The walk was enjoyable, though, as we got to see the vibrant student nightlife which was a pleasant start to the evening. We were surprised to find the entrance to our event on the back side of the building, accessible via Granada Ave. We attended here for an MMA event which was an interesting experience. The setting actually worked quite well, as the cage was positioned on the main stage, giving everyone in the theater a fantastic view. Seating included assigned chairs on the floor and general admission in the surrounding areas. Unfortunately, the unisex restrooms were in poor condition, so much so that I avoided using them. On the bright side, the venue has a full bar, and there's also a connected restaurant and bar for those who want more options. I had a small purse and was allowed to take it in after a bag check. From the friendly and helpful door staff who managed the security check efficiently, to the overall setting, we ultimately had a good time. read more

I frequent this venue often to see my favorite bands and artists. They do host big names and local acts. The venue is very spacious inside, great sound system, different bar areas and places to sit if you need a break from standing. They do have restrooms downstairs and as well as upstairs with a bathroom attendant (make sure to tip) . There is balcony access if you are willing to pay extra for the VIP perk, but honestly being down up in front is the best. There is off street parking in the surrounding neighborhoods but it will be a bit of a walk, you will better off parking in the parking garage directly across from the venue for a few bucks. My only complaint and concern with this venue is security. Security is absolutely terrible! I have seen so many fights breakout during shows. What's the point of having security if you are just going to let drunk patrons ruin it for everyone else because they can't control their alcohol. Security needs better training to learn how to put out the fires before it even starts! If you see a drunk, obnoxious, rude patron then kick them out before they FAAFO from someone else who is just there to enjoy the show. After the shows make sure to stick around and catch the $10 T-shirt bootleggers in the parking lot and get a bacon wrapped hot dog from the street vendors before you head home. read more

Has the most authentic musicians. Has the most eerie security. I saw another review say security does their job diligently and I would agree however they are over selling the customer service aspect. Security isn't happy to be there. You can see it on their faces. I have been here multiple times because I am in walking distance. I own the observatory take home cup I got from the iconic purity ring show back in November. Last night at artemas, I asked for a blue dolphin which is slang for water in a cup, she did not know what that was so I asked for water in a cup and the bartender would only give me liquid death. * That is legal grounds for a lawsuit. I asked her if she spoke English because she wouldn't give me water in a cup, proceeded to try to get security involved and I just walked away and continued dancing with dry mouth. My friends had been going upstairs all night for drinks and told me to go upstairs instead and I should have listened because boy was there a grade A cunt working last night who had her personal life spilling everywhere tainting the observatory's already shady customer service reputation. Before the water incident my friend told me he also had a bad experience which is why they were going upstairs for drinks instead. Unfortunately because they have authentic niche artists I will always go here but the workers feel like they come out of some sort of transitional program where people from prisons or troubled youth homes are integrated into society. Like a second chance place of work, which is great so expecting workers to be a little... off... is expected but workers scamming patrons into buying liquid death when they ask for -a cup of water- is absolutely a class action lawsuit waiting to happen because I know I'm not the only girl the worker attempted to scam or did scam. read more

Terrible experience with rude and unprofessional security -- won't be returning My wife and I came to West Coast Tavern and The Observatory for what was supposed to be a fun night out, but the experience was completely ruined by the behavior of multiple security guards. To start, the first security guard we encountered was actually very nice, but he accidentally gave us the wrong wristbands for the show. I didn't realize it until I stepped out of the venue during the performance to use the restroom. When I tried to go back in, another guard stopped me and told me I wasn't allowed to enter because my wristband was for the earlier show. I calmly explained that I was already in the current show and that my wife was still inside. Instead of helping, he immediately got confrontational and asked, "Are you trying to cause a problem?" I said no and showed him my ticket on my phone, which clearly showed the correct date and time. He grabbed my phone out of my hand, looked at it, handed it back, and then asked if I'd been drinking. I told him my wife and I had a couple of drinks at the bar earlier--well before the show started. He then told me to "give him my hands" and said I was cut off. I wasn't even trying to get another drink--just to return to my seat. Meanwhile, my wife also came out to use the restroom and ended up being taken outside to the street by another security guard to have her wristband redone. That guard wasn't very kind either and made her feel uncomfortable. I'm assuming she and I ended up dealing with the same guard who confronted me, which makes sense given how unnecessarily aggressive he was. Both of us were completely caught off guard and shaken by the whole situation. We're very easygoing, non-confrontational people, but this experience made us feel disrespected and unwelcome. Between the wristband mix-up, the rude treatment, and the total lack of professionalism, we will not be returning to West Coast Tavern or The Observatory again. read more

Pretty good venue for a show, we seem to be coming here a lot more lately. The entry setup is now more spacious, with new entrance on the west side. The staff and security are very friendly, and the procedures are more streamlined now. It's a clear bag or small purse venue, so be aware. No food or drink, etc. But that seems to be pretty standard at a lot of venues now. I like that they have ADA seating that you can reserve, and it's a larger section than HOB. Luckily there are bathrooms downstairs, you just have to stand in line for them. Parking can be an issue, since it's North Park. If you're going on a Thursday, know that it will be more challenging because of the farmer's market. There is the parking garage next door, but getting out of it can take a while. read more

I have been here more than a hand full of times. Definitely a local spot. Note: this is not a seating type venue. I will say that I do love the set up for where the bands play. There's a lot of room as far as where to stand when your watching the show. There's no shortage of not being able to hear anything so you won't miss out on listening. Their is also inside where you can order drinks from the main bar but they have a smaller bar where you see the show which has snacks majority of the time. The snacks honestly are reasonably priced. The drinks are as you would spend or pay elsewhere realistically. I will say the restrooms are a mess a lot of times. I'm not a fan of the restroom attendants upstairs they have. Always feel like I have to tip because I'm getting handed a paper towel and putting soap in my hand that I am capable of getting myself and it's always a small amount like, is there a shortage? Downstairs restrooms are as well always pretty messy. The crowds here sometimes get pretty rowdy. I will say when I accompany a friend in ADA they need to do a better job of telling other people not to sit on the ledges or blocking the view for those in that section or people always sit there that are not suppose to be and leave it for the ones that actually require those seats and their companions. On another note normally all the staff do a great job. Most are rather pleasant. I will say security does a good job of keeping the peace at this venue. Fights don't break out or they do well at escorting people out that get out of hand. They have quite a good amount of security around while the show is on. Sometimes people start mosh pits for certain bands but normally it doesn't get out of hand. But if your trying to people surf during the show they will get you back onto the ground preventing injury which is good. I will say parking can be a pain depending on the day. There is a parking structure but it may take you a while to get out. Also there are a lot of local spots within walking distance if you wanted to eat before or after the show or have a drink at one of the bars close by. read more

I went to the Observatory North Park on May 23rd to see The Afghan Whigs. The show was amazing but the venue left much to be desired. My group got there way before showtime at doors to get me situated in the ADA section as I am in a wheelchair. The ADA section was large with barely any people there. But the person seating people tried to put me all the way on the far side away from center stage. I questioned why he placed me there when plenty of better areas were available. He was very dismissive and rude. I explained that I just wanted to see the show. That we arrived early just to get good spots. My friends walked around looking in different areas to see if the viewing was better. We came back to the person seating the ADA section and asked again if I could get a good spot. He mumbled something rude and walked away. Slammed some chairs around and eventually came back to tell us where to sit. He talked about me rudely to other patrons that would be sitting in the same section. Saying that I am the reason why they can't sit with their guests. I offered up my area so those two other fans could sit together. But they declined. Thank goodness the show was so good because that was such a disappointment. The bartender was great! He spoke to me to find the perfect drink! After I started sipping my cocktail the evening got much better! read more

Beware the 6$ water I understand that music venue serve expensive drinks. But after buying a few drinks and spending nearly $100, my husband and I went back to the bar. He ordered a drink and I asked for water, and was automatically given a $6 can. If you're going to charge like that for water, you need to tell a person before you do it. The bartender argued that "that's what most people want" when they order water, and after I argued, he eventually asked if I wanted him to get the manager to refund the sale. After I said yes, he continued to serve other people and checked in to ask twice more if I "really" wanted him to get the manager for a refund. Serving expensive drinks is fine. Not warning someone that you're charging $6 for something that is often free, and then attempting to make them feel like THEY are the problem - is not fine. I then found a water fountain near the restroom, which I highly recommend. read more

Ok, I thought I never heard of The Observatory North Park (and it's true). I never "saw" it either, until I looked it up on google and realized I've walked past it 100 times while I was in North Park. The entrance for the concert is through the back, not the front with the beautiful lights. I found that to be a bit odd! But the other direction allows for a large line to form. The security was really great at keeping it organized and even though it was scary when they yelled (they need to be loud for a reason), they kept everyone safe-- because the line was split between a road crossing. There were several security personnel outside manning the line and telling us to walk this way, line up here, take out ID and hold out wrist. There were two lines for "no bag people" and "bag people." This was smart! Both people still had to walk though metal detectors I believe. They looked into my purse but they weren't rough and nosy. The ticket scanning was really easy. After that we walked through and into the venue. To me it looked small, but it's actually quite large and can hold lots of people. They have a bar area, merch section, and a restaurant off to the side I think. The bar area is where the bathrooms are located! I found the bathrooms to be clean and spacious for one person. They had both a toilet and a urinal. In addition to that there was a water station! A nice tall cup for endless refills of water, but there were no lids for them and personally-- I don't want to bring a drink out to the crowd without a lid. For my concert (NOTHING BUT THIEVES) it was standing only. It grew a bit tiresome, but overall it was ok and worth it. I liked that there was a slight breeze every once in a while from AC I think? The lights were bright and sometimes in direct eye line which was troublesome, but I find that it just depends which performer it is. I read that stage diving and crowd surfing is prohibited, I guess moshpitting is ok at the venue. Lol, not saying this is what you should do--please be mindful of others :( I've experienced having a lady jumping up and down and bouncing her body into me x3, quite an unpleasant moment but it is what it is, I guess. I think that if you're going to moshpit at least do it with willing participants not people that are trying to enjoy the concert reguarly. PARKING: they have parking available at the parking structure right across from the venue on 29th street. The fee for the concert ticket includes validation for the parking structure which is redeemable at the venue. This is pretty awesome. I didn't learn this until that night after we parked by a school several blocks away. Another key note is that the venue is CASHLESS!! We were able to bring a film camera in which was pretty cool! read more

The venue itself is a sight to see! Shout out to my favorite band, Thrice, for making my entire year by throwing on a 20th Anniversary tour of the Artist in the Ambulance album. And to the details... THE FOOD ELABORATION. There are snacks offered such as trail mix, but with VIP access, you can order at the VIP bar from the West Coast Tavern menu and eat at your table or bar counter (see my Yelp review of the restaurant to see what we ordered). THE DRINKS DRUNK. Specialty cocktails and beers are available. The speciality cocktails are from the West Coast Tavern menu (see my Yelp review of the restaurant to see what we ordered). THE VIBE EVOCATION. Historic theatrical vibes. The walls and ceiling are a rich, red pigment with gold finishes. Beautiful, ornate chandeliers bring a sense of grandeur and opulence. They have an expansive ground floor and a beautiful balcony at the top which is used as a VIP access area. From the VIP perspective, the bar and restrooms are steps away from your table so you don't need to keep going up and down the stairs. THE PARKING AFFAIR. We parked in the Ace parking structure located on 29th St. and North Park Way (next to the Observatory). There's street parking which has a 2 hr. limit from 8AM - 6PM. So, it looks like you can park for more than 2 hrs. after 6PM, but read the signs carefully before parking; there are things like street cleaning and the Farmer's Market that alter the parking rules. No bottlenecks leaving the parking structure after the show and I think it's because parking is paid upfront. THE RETURN QUANDARY. I'd come back for another show. I love the venue! read more

Horrible experience. First time here, was supposed to be a wonderful night seeing Social D with my daughter. About 4 songs in we were attacked by several girls. My daughter was on the floor getting her hair pulled by 2 girls, getting hit in the head with a cell phone. I was on the ground getting kicked in the face. I walked out with blood streaming out of my nose. We got kicked out, even though we started nothing, just trying to defend ourselves. Was not offered EMT help, security laughed at us, gave us fake names. My daughter's glasses were broken in half. She can't see without them. The Observatory is a great local venue to see some shows. I came this past weekend to support a friend who was playing and I'd have to say for having a behind the scenes experience and also getting to be a "fan" in the crowd all ends of this venue deliver. As a music fan I'd say the venue passes all of my marks for a great venue. The sound system was stellar, staff were super professional and nice, and the venue itself is intimate enough that you really can't have a bad spot in the house to see a live band. It's great when a venue is small enough that you can feel close to the action even if your towards the back. The layout was spacious and they met all of my expectations, clean space & bathrooms, a bar area, and good security. Also on the backend I was really impressed with this venue and the staff. Everyone was super professional, friendly, and helpful. Appropriate parking was reserved out to the side for the buses and guests cars. It wasn't too tricky to navigate the backstage area and they had nice accommodations for the artists and their friends. I felt that security was A+ keeping an eye out for who was coming and going. Also appreciated that security walked us through the easiest entrances and exits. All around good people and if your an artist this seemed like a stellar place to play, at least in my opinion looking at the accommodations and staffing. Definitely a great music venue in San Diego. If you're on the fence about coming, don't be. It's a great spot and I'm sure you'll have as fabulous of an experience as we did. read more

No matter where you are in the venue you'll have a great view! Some friends and I attended a concert here on a Friday night and it was quite the experience. The band we seen was amazing, sounded amazing, overall great! The venue experience, however, was the opposite. Starting off, we parked at the parking structure across the street from the venue. It was very helpful that they had an attendant pushing the button and handing out tickets, rather than waiting on each car to figure it out. A plus was that since we were seeing a show we didn't have to pay the $5. Upon leaving, the attendant was there still so it made exiting that much faster! The security team at the venue were all very helpful at directing us around and making sure we had proper wristbands for being over 21 or whatnot. We had to stand in another line to get upstairs to the VIP lounge. This is where it goes downhill. The woman at the host stand was very slow, or maybe her device to process payment was, but that line was not moving. We already had tickets, so she scanned them and told us we can buy a table or sit at a bar stool on the left. The price of the table, $250. Sounds like a friggin joke, but it's not, and my friends were quoted $320 when they asked later on. Also **disclaimer** the VIP lounge is for the venue, it is an additional cost if you bought "VIP" tickets for the tour you're seeing, it's not included. This was not indicated anywhere on the website. Inside the VIP lounge, if you did not pay for a table you have to go to the bar over by the host and order food/drinks. No server will wait on you. I go to put in an order for food/drink and the system is not working. The man behind the bar, Josh, was very kind and told me to put in an order with the server, Tia. These two employees deserve the shout out, they really held it down. The overall disorganization of the venue was such a headache, but these employees handled it SO WELL. They were the best part of the night besides the actual concert. I am not even sure Josh is a bartender, he was supposed to be fixing the register system, but none of it worked most of the night. The food was typical bar food, nothing stood out and I was so hungry by the time I got it, it didn't matter. In conclusion, VIP is really just somewhere to sit in this venue, but I wouldn't shell out for a table. This is still a decent venue to see a show. read more

I went here for a concert and the venue staff was so incredible. Security went above and beyond protecting us and making sure things were safe. A lady had gotten sick behind me at the barricade and Phil immediately got a team of people to come in mid-show and clean it up. He also helped hold down someone trying to rush the stage in a very unsafe manner, injuring himself in the process. He got us waters, picked up things we dropped. Phil deserves a raise. Thank you to the staff for making the night so great. Highly recommend going here for shows! Food was also cheap which is rare at venues haha! read more

I love almost everything about this place. The way it looks, sounds, and the intimate vibe. Lots of room. Easy to get to bars and restrooms. Everything is really clean. What I don't like is the fact that they are extremely unorganized and unfair when it comes to who gets in first to see a show. I was mislead in thinking VIP means anything there. Or that those who bought fast passes in advance held any value. Don't bother with either unless you have your heart set on the balcony. Waste of money. The bar was passing out fast passes left and right if you were spending at least $20. Meanwhile the $100 I spent months ago, got me in AFTER those people. Not cool. If I wasn't there to see Yungblud, I might have let it ruin my night. Still managed to get pretty close. It's just the principal of it. I was sent to 4 different areas by security. Ended up going through the bar. Still have my unscanned tickets that did nothing for me lol! Get it together please, because it's a great place to catch a show! Paid extra for vip club. What they don't tell you is that there are only a handful of tables available first come first serve. The rest have to stand on a SMALL balcony with very limited view or pay for a vip table. We were quoted $350 for a vip table. It's a great hustle on their part, since a lot of people were stuck with no view or the choice to pay for a vip table (on top of your vip club upgrade).
