Hunter Douglas Roller Shades - Measurement Issues We have owned Hunter Douglas shades in multiple homes and have always liked the quality of the products. This review is not about the shades themselves, but about the measurement and installation. We had previously worked with San Diego Shades and had a great experience, which makes this outcome especially disappointing. This time, instead of their technician, they sent the sales rep to do the measurements. All of the shades installed in our home were measured and cut slightly too small, leaving the wooden window frames visible on the sides when the shades are fully closed. While this may sound minor, it affects both the look and function of the shades. The issue is most noticeable in our bedroom, where we installed motorized room-darkening roller shades. Light still comes through the sides, which defeats the purpose of a room-darkening shade. I raised my concerns right after the upstairs bedroom installations, but the issue was dismissed with an explanation that didn't address the problem and did not and does not make sense. At the time, we were in the middle of multiple home projects, and I assumed I would eventually get used to them. I didn't -- and it continues to bother me every time I see them. When the downstairs shades were installed and had the same issue, I escalated the concern to a supervisor, and two of the cheaper shades were eventually replaced. Unfortunately, the bedroom shades were never corrected. Even now, the measurement issue is noticeable and frustrating. For a professional installation, I expected better attention to detail and follow-through. My advice: carefully review measurements and finished results before signing off. read more

With 25 yr old+ shades that have been badly abused by sun light and ripping, I went looking for a locally owned, small business that wasn't spending a fortune on advertising and passing that off to its customers. My 5 Hunter Douglas blinds in my kitchen began to delaminate this past fall. The dealer that I purchased them from some years ago had gone out of business. The blinds had a lifetime warranty for delamination. San Diego Shade was willing to take on all the work of handling this warranty issue even though they hadn't sold me the blinds. They were very gracious and kind to me and every person I dealt with including those who came out to install the new blinds was so supportive, careful and attentive. San Diego Shade installed motorized Hunter Douglas shades in our Coronado Shores condo a couple of years ago and also installed roller blackout shades and verticals in both bedrooms. The shades have worked really well and we've been really happy with their service. We've only had to call a couple of times (salt air and strong sunlight can be hard on anything metal) and their service has been amazing. The owner Matt Tregidga is fantastic. I went to this store earlier this year to inquire about Hunter Douglas shades and the sales person who was there was very knowledgeable and welcoming. She answered all my questions, gave me all the information and I told her I was going to come back once my windows are ready. Unfortunately, I lost her contact information and the information about the shades I wanted to purchase and returned to the store today to remind myself of what they offer before I talk to the designers. The experience today was so underwhelming that I left the store speechless. The sales assistant immediately told me that I would have to have their team onsite and that they were going to bring out the samples. Well, I wanted to see all the shade options in person. She didn't offer any help in explaining which options exist. I also asked about the cordless options and she pointed to one shade and said they have fewer options for that design, but didn't offer to show anything . After that, she brought the huge book with shade material samples for another type of shades and went to the back room to work on her computer. It didn't cross her mind to ask what we were looking for, windows or doors, nothing. I tried to get her attention by a simple "excuse me" twice, but she didn't raise her head, so I decided to leave and take my business elsewhere. 3 stars only because the first experience was 5*. The experience today was 0. The person who works here either had a really bad day or thought that I wasn't going to buy anything and decided I wasn't worth her time. I needed new blinds in the master bedroom and had a delaminated blind in another room (that delaminated blind was over 20 years old). I wanted Hunter Douglas, as they are the best. San Diego Shade came over and measured everything. He even called Hunter Douglas in case the delaminated blind was covered by the warranty. (It wasn't.) Sooner than I expected the new blinds were here, quickly installed, and everything looks great. I am very pleased with the service, the quality of the installations, and the speed of delivery. Unfortunately, once the sale was made my experience declined. It's taken over a month to get the shades in which was downplayed. Today was my install date and even after having a specific discussion during the sale, the measurements were off on one side. Sadly, I have to wait again. I've now missed the 4th of July and really most of the summer. Advice, ask a lot of questions, ensure the measurements are accurate and be prepared to wait. I tried to stick with a local company but am regretting not going with a bigger company at this point. read more

Every aspect of their service was excellent. Michael, the estimator, was so helpful, patient and professional every step of the way and came out to measure a couple of times to make sure everything would be perfect for our awkward windows. A vinyl retrofit of two windows that are next to each other on two separate walls left very little area to mount any shades. Hunter Douglas has such a wide selection of colors and patterns and our new cell shades put the finishing touch on our kitchen remodel. We also love the app and the remote control. Our old Hunter Douglas window coverings operated with pull cord that was difficult to get to and the newer technology is such an upgrade. Motorization costs a bit more but it makes something that was once tedious to do multiple times per day so much simpler and scheduling the opening/closing on the app is the chef's kiss. We recently had two new shades put into a double corner window. SD Shade previously put in shades for our sliding glass doors. We were very happy with those, so we simply ordered the same type for the additional windows. Because we were not specific about the style of pull chains we wanted for the new windows, we needed them changed from the ones that were installed. SD Shade responded quickly to our request. Scheduling was easy and new chains were installed without any hassle or cost. SD Shade is a great company to work with. Initially, they helped us figure out what type and style of shade we wanted and needed; measurement for them was exact; installation was quick after our shades were ordered. Obviously, it was their business to make sure we were totally satisfied with our purchase, even when it involved something as minor as a pull chain. I bought a few very beautiful custom-made motorized shades for my condo in July 2022. The rechargeable batteries just died this week (impressive!) and during my spring cleaning I must've tossed the charger. Ugh! San Diego Shade is the best! I had purchased Hunter Douglas roller shades previously from another vendor that had horrible customer service. So when one of the shades stopped working I decided to look elsewhere and reached out to San Diego Shade. Matt didn't hesitate to help me troubleshoot the problem. We eventually figured out that the motor was shot and we had to get a new one. Matt helped ordered one with Hunter Douglas and walked me through how to replace it. I was able to get it replaced but still had some minor issues with it. Matt came out to fix those for me free of charge. I just can't say enough nice things about him. After the installation of our new patio cover, we were in need of some sun shades to keep our outside living area nice and cool. We shopped around contacting several companies along with estimates. This review is long overdue! Over a year ago, I had the San Diego Shade team install three automated rolling shades in my dining room and could not be happier with the result! They look terrific and accomplish exactly what I was looking for in that room! The whole process was professionally managed, the team was quick to respond to all questions and very transparent about the process and timelines. The shades have held up great and I continue to get compliments on them! Fast forward to today - I had a small technical issue with one of the blinds (likely something of my own making!) - and when I reached out to the San Diego Shade team with a question, they were quick to reply and sent someone out right away. I had a Hunter Douglas shade installed in 2010 that I had purchased through Costco that, despite its age, qualified for replacement under the warranty. However, Costco no longer carries Hunter Douglas so I was referred to San Diego Shade to assist me with the claim. I anticipated some push-back and a few since I did not buy the shade there, but Tiffany was absolutely AWESOME--polite, cheerful and very helpful. She communicated with me several times to keep me updated and to make sure the claim and re-order went through correctly and smoothly. My new shade arrived in record time! Update: #3 3/14/17 Billy came to finally install with the warranted part. He spent over an hour making sure the shade was right and that it opened and closed evenly. I've updated my review. Bad luck that Hunter Douglas sent us a bummed shade. Hopefully it doesn't happen to anyone else. San Diego shade came through and took care of their customer. I'd chose them the next time we have needs for window treatments. UPDATE #2 3/9/17 Billy came today to install the new battery pack. However, it seems that the battery pack was not the problem. Must have been a bad batch sent by hunter Douglas. He called them and ordered a new motor and circuit board for them to replace and he requested that they send it expedited mail. Like I said before, I would update my review and San Diego Shade is doing their best to take care of their customer. Billy is a good dude, very knowledgeable and took apart the motor, circuit and even made it so that our skylight was shaded. We may not have the motor installed today, but at least we have our bedroom shaded from the sun which is right over our bed. Thanks Billy. Looking forward to seeing this thing work next week. Previous review: First of all, I would like to make it clear that I will UPDATE our review once our issue is fixed. I regretfully write this review about San Diego Shades. Here is the back story, my wife and I wanted to add an automated sun shade to our skylight. Our insurance replaced our skylight due to wind damage and since we were not able to buy the skylight that already came with the shade, we were recommended to go with this company by a reputable skylight company, Skylight Pros. The shades made by Hunter Douglas isn't a cheap shade. We got estimates from 4 companies and although San Diego Shade was not the cheapest, we wanted to go with a reputable company in hopes of getting a reputable product and professional install. The skylight automated shade is almost $1000. $930 to be exact. We thought that a brand name shade such as Hunter Douglas would be a good fit for our home. But since the insurance company was paying for over half the shade, we thought this would be a good investment. I paid half the cost of the shade and waited over 2 weeks for arrival and install. When Sean, the installer arrived, we were excited. Our skylight opening was freshly painted, and prepped the room for the install. I moved the bed around, removed the huge mattress and bed and even set up a ladder for our installer. However, when he opened the box, the battery compartment for this $1000 shade was busted and he couldn't get it to work. Sean completed the install. My concern is this: I emailed San Diego Shade to ask them to hopefully next day air deliver this battery pack. I also asked them if we could possibly plug in this unit to make sure that it is just the battery pack that is busted. I even called the company and tried to speak with someone about our issue. I was told that they would try to order my part soon. I asked for an eta and he said he would call me back when he heard. I get it, I am being impatient. But for spending $1000 for a 2'x 4' shade, we would expect some sense of urgency or at least tell us it will be fixed asap. I didn't like the "we will get it when we get it tone" when I called about the solution. I really hope that when the battery arrives, that it is only a battery issue. I'm not looking for any discounts or kickbacks from my complaint. Looking for some type of expedited solution. Hope this is fixed soon. I hope that it is JUST the battery. read more
