One of the stops on Florence's T2 tram line, this station is above ground and located at surface level on an island in the center of the Via di Novoli. There are proper crosswalks on each side with traffic control devices, or you can do as I did and cross at the opposite side of the station without issue. There is some cover and a few seats while you wait.
San Donato - Università is between Liceo Da Vinci (towards the city center, Unità) and Regione Toscana (towards Peretola Aeroporto). There is a ticket vending machine on each platform which accepts coins, cash and cards. You must have a ticket before boarding the train and then validate it on board. Once validated, it is good for up to 90 minutes including connections to the other tram line or to buses. That should be enough time for even the furthest bus stop. The tickets are currently €1.50 each.
There is a screen indicating how long until the next three trains to arrive as well as an audible notification when the next train is arriving. You can board at any door, just remember to validate your ticket (if you don't have a pass on your phone).
