We came in tonight hoping for some decent TexMex. We got it. We left satisfied. We were quickly seated upon arrival. Complimentary chips and salsa appeared as soon as we were seated. Our server was there to take our drink orders right away. He was very friendly. He was attentive for our entire visit. My food was really good. I got enchiladas topped with mole sauce. The portion size was huge. I couldn't eat it all. My partner ordered aa taco salad in an edible shell. The shell was fresh. The salsa that came with the chips was really good. This Mexican restaurant is a regular stop of ours when visiting OKI. Just a short drive across the bridge for pretty solid food and service. This shopping center used to be jumping with stores, but now this place is basically the only thing remaining. They have opened a second location nearby, but I'm glad the classic has held on for now. The location is quite large with three different dining areas. The decor is lively with a south western vibes. Booths as well as large tables are available for seating. There's a bar area with TVs too. Of course it all begins with chips and salsa. This place is actually the only one I can remember being physically shut off on free chips. In their defense our large group was still kind of inebriated from a day of beach drinking and was ravenous for food. It was also Memorial Day weekend so the place was jumping more than normal, so food was taking longer. I always have a good laugh thinking about it. Regardless to all that, their chips and salsa is solid. My husband and siblings came here most recently late night after the rest of the family went to bed. No holiday or big crowds this time, so the pace of service and food moved perfectly. I ordered the ACP Texano (fajita grilled chicken, steak, and shrimp grilled with fajita vegetables served on a bed of rice topped with queso sauce). It was a nice size portion, and overall tasty. Unfortunately, some of the meat pieces were a bit burnt which effected the flavor a bit. I did love that their was a plentiful amount of Queso on my plate. Between the food and some remaining chips, I got it all. Their Queso is the standard creamy deliciousness we all love. Seems it was burrito night for the rest of the people in my group. My brother got the Seafood burritos with Shrimp (Two flour tortillas filled with scallops and shrimp cooked with pico de gallo and topped with our special cheese blend. Served with rice, lettuce, avocado and pico de Gallo). It looked fresh and tasty. The other two got the Burrito California (Extra large burrito stuffed with your choice of grilled chicken or steak, refried beans, cheese, grilled onion, topped with cheese sauce and sour cream). We eat here often because these guys do a great job. Many authentic dishes (chile reãno is my fav with a Dos Equis draft) and a few chefs creations and we've yet to have a bad meal. Love the beer selections and the margarita varieties. If I had one request? Fresh chicharrones with salsa. read more

Went for a group lunch with about 40 people. Service was fast and friendly. Chips and salsa as we waited were a nice touch! We didn't have any alcoholic drinks but I would love to try some another time. We had the Texas Fajitas and they were pretty good, but a little dry and we had to ask for lime wedges (quickly brought over after we got their attention). Shrimp, chicken and steak. Our friends had only chicken and got a very large portion of chicken, taking home most of it. The menu is vast as with most Mexican places with many combos. I can see the writing on the wall and I hate it because this is one of my favorite restaurants when I head down to the beach on Oak Island!! When I started coming to Oak Island around a decade ago, San Felipe stood proudly in a shopping center along a RBC bank, a couple of clothing stores and a bustling Lowe's food store. I cannot begin to tell you how many times I have excitedly headed over the bridge from Oak Island to beeline for San Felipe for lunch and dinner whether it was alone, with family or with friends. The staff has consistently been outstanding over the years, comprised of mostly young and ambitious Latinos. These gentlemen are always welcoming and attentive and hard-working. It's an absolute pleasure to walk in there and feel the positive vibes from the staff. No matter how busy they are and no matter how hard they work, all of them are always ready to give you a smile and the best service they possibly can. These guys are tops! Before you can catch your breath out comes a delicious basket of warm tortilla chips with plenty of salsa; mild or spicy. I'm embarrassed to say that over the 10 years I can count on one hand how many times I've ordered anything but their fajitas. Whether I've tried shrimp or meat or chicken or a combination of all the above, it is always a huge portion with just the right spices to make it delicious. Depending on my mood, sometimes I'm a good boy and save half of it for later and sometimes it's so outstanding that I just have to devour the entire dish! The few times that I have ventured away from fajitas and tried something else it was also outstanding and delicious The prices are moderate and fair and certainly worth what you get in return. Unfortunately, I have slowly watched the strip mall tenants drift away. The bank closed, the clothing stores shut down and the Lowes Foods moved across the road. Now when you pull into the shopping center everything is vacant except for San Felipe. To add insult to injury, their sign is partially broken and the façade is starting to look a bit worn. Once I walked inside yesterday, it was the same outstanding staff, the same old but nicely familiar interior and the same outstanding food. I can just tell by the way things are going that their days are numbered. There's no way they can go on and on alone in a shopping center although the crowd inside yesterday would indicate this restaurant is definitely a destination spot; empty shopping strip mall or not. I'm not surprised. I ordered the lunch fajitas which was almost the size of the dinner portion and it was one of those days when I devoured everything on my plate along with the side plate of beans and rice and lettuce and guacamole and sour cream. I also ate every single chip in that basket! So delicious!! Unless there is a turnaround in that shopping center, I would not be surprised if in the near future San Felipe will be gone. I'm hoping they will relocate, but I wonder if any site will capture the magnificent service and food this restaurant always provides. But in the meantime, while this gem still sits proudly alone in that strip mall, put on some loose pants and head over to San Felipe and have a fantastic Mexican meal! read more

Stopped in a few days after Christmas for lunch and was pleasantly surprised! Don't let the front facade fool you. Inside is you'll find a legit Mexican restaurant. Our server, Jose, was friendly, quick, and accommodating. There was no wait, as they seem to have a decent amount of seating (multiple rooms). Jose took our order quickly. And brought out chips, salsa, and our drinks shortly after. I ordered the fajitas - and they were so tasty! Came out HOT with a good amount of food. Absolutely horrible dining experience! My wife and I are not locals and my pregnant wife was craving fajitas, so we decided to have Mexican for dinner. Upon arriving to the restaurant, the booths were rather small, and she is currently in her third trimester so we had to adjust the booth to her comfort. I am rather large and was adjusting my side of the table as well. On multiple occasions we caught the staff pointing at our table and laughing. Additionally, when the waiter picked up my wife's food, he laughed and patted his belly. This experience ruined our date and our impression of this restaurant.
