Went camping here with a group of friends. It's just a strange location for camping, since its right next to the freeway! Ah not a relaxing way to camp with the freeway right there in your view. It's $10 per car to park, CASH only. Not cool. The beach was pretty nice, the hike down was easy. read more

A SoCal longboard mecca, one of the original surf spots on the coast. You need to have a State Park pass or get ready to pay north of $10-20 to park for the day. On the weekends, the park gets full and you have to wait in the overflow lot (they go to a 1 in, 1 out crowd control). The road to Dog Patch is unpaved, so if you have a fancy car, you might want to park at the lot before the pavement ends and walk in. (Also a great parking spot if you want to walk to Church's to surf) The place has 3 Points and always has a high crowd factor but the vibe is awesome and plenty of families make a day out of it during the summertime. read more

Definitely a picturesque place for surfers. My gf doesn't surf and she was really awe struck by the vibe and scene. So why only a few stars? Well the few times I've been here the state park officials either had the gate closed due to an "unforeseen" event that was not brought about prior or delays entering the park. There Is no running water though portable restrooms are available. What really makes this place is the people that surf here - laid back and just looking for a fun time. Sure there are jerks who think they're gods gift but ignore em and it'll a many memorable experiences. read more

The beach is fantastic as well as the weather. The waves are even better but the beach is small and rocky and the parking lot is almost always full. The water has been exceptionally warm but it contains massive amounts of seaweeds that make the water just a tad bit murky. It is also rocky upon the bottom of the ocean which makes it hard to swim and ideally makes this beach a "surfers beach" read more

Nice beach camping.....if you enjoy the sound of Jake brakes at the weigh station all night...the sound of interstate 5 all night oh yeah and the constant harassment from the park rangers and staff. We got there late the night of arrival and did not see the pay box...went to our sight and people were in it so we camped in the spot next to it. The night ranger was cool and said no problem as long as we clear it with front gate in the morning. we did and after we made our reservations online they still made us pay for an extra car and another campsite. About the only good from the trip was all the military action at night and at sea that we got to hear and sea. read more

I enjoy going here when I don't plan on getting into the water. Unless you want to surf, stay out. The rocks are huge along the shore and they crash into your legs hard. It was horrible. I do enjoy tanning here. Parking is also very limited. read more

San Onofre is a beautiful beach and well worth the drive. The water and waves are excellent. Despite the recent lawsuit, nude sunbathing is still going strong! Also be sure to check out the gay section just inside the military base. read more

San Ono Fre State Beach A great place to go. Located right along a military base, it is a known nude beach and although nudity is prohibited on state beaches, this small section of beach is a "no complaint-no problem" section of beach. Legal court battles have recently upheld a 1970's governorial decision to allow nudity in this area as long as there are no complaints from visitors. Requires a hike down a bluff trail, but is fairly easy access if you are physically able to hike a few miles. There is a recently posted NUDITY PROHIBITED sign place at the beginning of the area that is used by nudists and rumors have been going around since the court battle to close the beach (which failed) that authorities are going there more and asking visitor to don thier clothing. The court retained the 'CAHILL POLICY" which was used for years to give nudusts some protection at the beach so it still remains as a nude beach, however according to the law, if you refuse to get clothed when asked-you are subject to be cited under the ordinance that is posted. We will continue to go there ourselves on a regular basis. Its easy access for the kids and trail 6 is good for bikes, cooler wagons, etc. read more

Smedley beach. Super dusty parking, you will need to wash your car unpaved, no showers. Decent surfing. If you are not surfing forget this beach it has some cute tiki huts though. Good place for foreigners who have never seen or tried surfing to check out as the break is longer than you would expect . read more

My parents have been staying at this RV park for 4 years and will no longer be returning. The new rules they have are absolutely ridiculous. To have people move every month who are long term residents specially when it's one space over is silly and a huge hassle. To tell me you can't book the same spot is a lie as they have done it the 3 years prior. The handling of the flooding was very poor. Giving people less then 2 hours notice to move and asking them to do so immediately when there is no instant risk and my family works and can't just drop everything to come there. Even when asking to move immediately they still require the paperwork signed before moving. If it was that dangerous you would think paperwork would be the least of their worries. Just poor service all around. The girls in the office are sweet, it's not their fault as they are just doing what they are told. The people running the show, military and otherwise need to rethink things or they will lose much more business. My parents will find a new place to spend 6 months out of the year. read more

Went here yesterday afternoon. Very clean beach, not crowded, soft sand, and a fun spot to watch surfers. Parking is only $1/hour if you park at San Clemente State Park. Worth the trip from LA! Will be visiting in the summer again! read more

Great long board surfing! High tide is easier to paddle out in because it is very rocky and difficult at low tide. Well worth the $15 to surf! read more

Rocky beach and parking is a pain, we went on a Saturday (wait times during the weekend are longer) We had to wait approx an hour just to get in and park..15 bucks for parking btw. Overall I love it. It's a beautiful surf haven and definitely feels more private than HB read more

This is a review for San Onofre Bluffs Campground. The sites are small, we are literally on top of our neighbors with only inches between their truck and our camper. Be prepared for your neighbors to encroach upon your space if their camper is big or they have pop outs. There is zero privacy. There is a small picnic and bbq area but it's not aligned with our site, we basically have to go sit in front of our neighbors to eat and cook and they had to take down their awning so the flames from our fire wouldn't burn it. When we got here the site had not been cleaned-- there was bird poop all over our table and a bag of dog poop in our fire pit!! Also, our picnic table was rotted so badly there was a huge hole in the bench!! They have tripping hazards all over the place-- the thick chain holding the rotted picnic table, and the cement things that stop your vehicle from going into the dirt. Both are very dangerous both in the day and at night because they are hard to see and you don't expect something to be trying to trip you. We literally have a space that is 5'x30' to relax in because it is so cramped. We took a walk, excited to go to the beach...but then we found out that the trail is completely eroded and it is extremely dangerous, so we can't get down to the beach at all-- the beach is rocky, not sandy, and at high tide there's nowhere to go anyway. All of the trails are overgrown and some have dangerous holes caused by erosion-- and there is no warning, so if you're not paying attention, you will get hurt. We tried to take a walk but trucks and RV's keep speeding by and we almost got run over a few times. There is no place to go to relax or enjoy nature, nothing here is maintained, it is noisy from being so close to the train tracks and freeway, but here's the worst part about the noise-- because some spots are located directly across from the Border Patrol Checkpoint, their megaphones woke us up at 5am!!! At first we thought it was someone on a phone but then we realized it was the Border Patrol, and boy were they loud! We will likely cut our trip here short, there is nothing enjoyable about being here. Perhaps if our site was one with an ocean view it might be tolerable to stay here, but many of the sites do not have good views, so chose your site carefully. They do not have any general store and they only sell firewood ($7) and the nearest store is 10 minutes away. I would not recommend this campground for kids, as there is NOTHING for them to do and nowhere for them to play, it's not for elderly people and those with disabilities as they will have a difficult time enjoying it because of the lack of proper maintenance on trails, I would only recommend staying here if you get an ocean view site and you're hard of hearing and you don't mind that you will have other campers basically right on top of you and if you have no interest in going to the beach. The only reason I didn't give it only one star is because of the view, it is incredible. This place has so much potential, I am shocked that they don't take better care of it and they let it crumble like this. read more

People need to know before they trek down here it's no picnic in terms of amenities. This review is for San Onofre Surf Beach, which is just north of the nuclear power plant, not San Onofre Beach which is South of the plant, and has a campground. This is not located at the address above either, someone needs to fix the map. This place is known as the birthplace of California surf culture, along with Malibu, and Windansea. If your not a surfer though, you may not like this beach. It's not the prettiest for one, with the awesome view of nuclear reactors. There is not much to do but surf here. All the firepits are gone, except for one. All the picnic tables are destroyed. There are NO Bathrooms and NO SHOWERS! There is always a line about an hour or two long in the summer, mostly of surfers, and marine's trying to get to the base campground which uses the same entry as this beach. Once you get down there, you realize after waiting an hour, there is not much parking, except way down by the reactor, or way by the entrance in the little parking lot, where youhave to haul everything down the hill from. The beach itself does not allow dogs, or swimming, is extremely rocky, and dirt. You will leave needing a shower. The ranger gives out tickets for drinking alcohol too, and blazes the sirens about 7:30 that it's almost time to leave, by 8 (so early?). The surf can be good, but not any better than Salt creek. It's probably the most crowded spot in southern Orange County. If you get a parking spot in the beachside parking you can literally throw your cooler right onto the sand, all 8 feet of it. The beach is really tiny, because the sand is almost all gone from erosion. They do have a volleyball net, which was in use, and it's convienent if your stationed at Camp Pendelton. read more

This place is a saving grace! After camping at the San Mateo campgrounds and having a very negative experience trying to get down to the beach, I was really bummed out that our camping trip "at the beach" had turned into somewhat of a disaster. Lucky for me, my cousin came to visit us at our campsite, and told us about this beach. A short drive later, we were chillin' at the beach, the previous days experience a distant memory. They have beach wheelchairs too which is awesome because my husband is in a wheelchair and we were able to enjoy the beach as a family. I love the vibe of this place, the locals are so friendly. I would definitely recommend this place. The only down side is that there are a lot of rocks in the water, which makes it difficult to navigate into the water. Being from San Diego, this wasn't something we're accustomed too. But all of the other amenities (palapas, picnic tables, showers, bathrooms) made up for it! read more

My husband and I have been surfing here for years. One of the best places for surfing in Orange County. Most days throughout the year the waves are small and rolling. Great place for long boarding. We have a pass so we don't have to pay- I think it's about $15 a day. So if you have to pay stay the whole day. There is a small part of sand to hang on the beach but it isn't a great place if your not into surfing. The bottom of the ocean is rock so not good for swimming or kids playing in the water. Best place to take your kids to learn to surf. We love that it's a relaxed beach with friendly laid back people. Everyone is nice and there are lots of lady surfers which I like- nice seeing other girls out there surfing. On bigger days you can bring a short or mid size board as well just have to paddle a bit further out than other surf breaks like Newport. The road is dirt and rocky so don't bring a convertible that you are concerned about. You can drive in the parking lot just go slow but just a heads up. Oh and one other thing about San o is that you need to get here early on summer weekend days or if the surf is good because it can back up and you will have to wait in a line before getting in as you wait for cars to leave. Sometimes we have to get here at 6/7am before a line if it's a great day to surf. read more
