SANA has an incredibly welcoming space. You can immediately sense this is a community and not just a yoga studio. I took a fusion class, so it was energizing, cardiovascular and calming. The instructor had the ability to both push you past your limits and encourage you for just showing up. With yoga, you use your body weight to exercise through various poses that help you strengthen your muscles. This studio makes your experience both physical and mental. I had one of my favorite Memphis yoga experiences here. They allow new visitors to try out the classes unlimited for two weeks at $35. They have in-person, online and private classes with 50, 60, and 80-minute formats for every level, beginner to advanced. The classes include Sumits-style hot yoga, tabata-style hot Pilates, a vinyasa style yoga flow, Ashtanga Short Form and Yin Yoga. They run 5:50 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Sundays. Check them out. They seem like good people. read more

You don't really get a yoga studio vibe here. Should be called Sana Exercise Studio. Most of the instructors are great, which got it two stars vs. 0 but it is the owner's attitude and business practices that knock it down. While I haven't checked every other studio, it appears to be the most expensive in Memphis, even though it offers fewer classes (both in specific types of classes and # of daily classes available) than the competition. Mind Body Haus has been my favorite studio as one specific example. Even though you are paying a premium cost, you aren't getting premium amenities. No Bolsas and they are frequently out of blocks and weights for pilates even though the classes aren't that full. When we started, the "Hot Yoga" studio wasn't that hot, and it was about a month before the humidifier was fixed and the heat improved. They offer Hot Yoga, but the series isn't the classic Bikram 26+2, which is what I have found most other hot yogis are looking for, and the studio's policy is to open the doors numerous times during class to let the heat out. The final straw was we had our membership on pause, and they charged us anyway. I ended up going back and forth with the owner, who lawyered me out instead of simply refunding my money until we were ready to practice again. The owner will sell you an $80 foam yoga mat, but you aren't going to find any Namaste here! On the positive side, most instructors were great, and we met some cool folks. read more

I love this place so much...actually from the moment I stepped foot inside there. I was looking for an "exercise event" that was different from your standard fitness class and I definitely found it here. Not only do I feel like I get the work out I need, but I can also tell that I'm improving my flexibility and physical fitness with my consistency! Also, the teachers are absolutely amazing. Hot yoga? WHAT. WAS. I. THINKING? That was the moment of panic I had just before entering the studio, but all of my fears were erased the moment I stepped inside. Amy was an absolute dream! She made everything feel effortless: from signing in to learning about the space and getting settled in for class. She got everyone checked in, made sure waivers were signed, and pointed out the locker rooms. The locker room was super spacious, clean, and nice. I loved all the mirrors-- even after sweating my life away. The class was amazing. It was hot and I do mean HOT... but it was oddly comforting and really forced me to focus. I felt completely comfortable with the process of being an awkward beginner and had the added benefit of another staff member taking the class right in the middle of the room. Seeing how the positions should look really helped. The series alternated between faster and slower movements and I finally understood that whole "flow" thing yogis are always talking about. We ended with a moment of relaxation and a warm lavender towel over our eyes -- it was as heavenly as it sounds. They have a new client special for 20 classes for $20. Obsessed. Really and truly obsessed. I'm currently in the middle of a personal 14 day hot yoga challenge...and it is life changing. You've GOT to try it! Well, not the 14 day challenge, but at least try one of their classes. It is designed for beginners to advanced as they follow the same routine daily, which is ideal, because now I'm starting to follow along...even though I am a total and complete yoga newbie. Yes, it is hot. REALLY hot...but that's the best part (and it's hot yoga, duh). I used to think sweating was disgusting (and so not fitting for a lady) but now I find it sexy...and it makes me feel good (especially after a hangover - get rid of those toxins!!). Plus you have to stare at yourself in the mirror, which I normally hate, but it's only day 5 and I'm starting to appreciate my body more. I've noticed a lot of the same people in class every day, which obviously tells you that this class is doing something right because I highly doubt they are doing some personal will power test like me. And after the 14 days are up? I don't think it's going to be a challenge anymore...meaning I WANT to come back. No force. read more

I have been practicing yoga at Sumits for a year and can't say enough great things about this place! The studio is beautiful and welcoming to anyone who has a lot of yoga experience or none at all--and the same with all the classes: they are all designed for any level of yoga practice. Students come in all shapes, sizes, and shades. I have struggled with anxiety and depression for 10 years and have tried different versions of exercise to aid with my treatment, but it wasn't until I found hot yoga that exercise made a real difference with my issues. I have been to many yoga studios, and let me tell ya, this place is intense. Intense in the best way possible! Their teaching mainly consist of a mix between ashtanga and bikram. Ashtanga just so happens to be my favorite :). Y'all its hawttttt. So hot. Like wait...am I about to pass out? Hot. Nelly was probably talking about this place. Bring water. Lots of water. Also, maybe don't go to Italian Fest the night before and drink...I digress. When it comes to instructors. They are all so toned and strong. Its actually ridiculous. How long will it take me to look like them? Hopefully sooner rather than later ;). I loved how they had one instructor talking, and the other one going through the motions. No other studio I've been to has done that! Once again, unlike other yoga classes, they had us take a Shavasana every 20-25 minutes. I kept thinking it was over (a little heartbroken), only to find we would keep on going! A little warning: If you are an avid yogi, try this place out. You'll love it! If you're a beginner, you may have to work your way up to really appreciate it! read more

This class was so challenging for me. So hot. The instructors encourage you to work at your own pace and I definitely heeded that advice. However, this was only my 2nd (and most difficult) hot yoga class ever and the instructor noted that it gets easier with time. What I really liked about this studio was the way they conducted class. Three instructors were positioned in the front of the room for the class to observe while another stayed in the back and talked us through the poses. This allowed the instructors in the front to really focus and breathe. It made me want to match their intensity with each step. The flow was great. They started us out by bringing awareness to our breath in child's pose. From there, the movements became more challenging. Every single person was dripping. Towels wet with sweat. Makeup running down faces (I know make up in hot yoga seems silly, but for Yelp events they have cameras out. However, I personally ended up looking like alice cooper after 20 minutes of class anyways). After a set of fluid poses the instructor would have us come to Savasana to rest before moving to the next set. There were many times I thought it was over and I was relieved only to find out we had yet another set of poses to do. Very very challenging. At the end they came around and placed a cool cloth over our eyes. The studio itself is very peaceful and beautiful. Two walls are mirrored, which helped me greatly to make sure I was correctly executing poses. I had never done my downward dog in front of a mirror before and this helped me confirm that I was holding the correct posture. But it also helped me correct angles in other poses and better mimic the instructors as well. Awesome experience. I would definitely like to return! read more

My sister and I took an essential oil chakra class at Sumits last month with Dinah Wilson. The studio is upstairs in the shopping plaza. When we walked in, we were greeted immediately. The staff is super nice and very accommodating. The bathrooms are large and spacious, they do have showers to wash off after class (it is a hot yoga studio after all). There is a small boutique area in the lobby with great brands. While we were in there, they also happened to have a sale on a lot of their items. We loved the class and while Dinah isn't a teacher that is normally there, I do know that she comes into town occasionally and will host a class at Sumits. If I lived closer, I would definitely give one of their hot classes a try. I was really impressed with Sumits! read more

Oh my! As a frequent exerciser, but a yoga virgin I knew I was in for an experience. I, in no way, performed the postures as directed, but I did find strength in the attempt. After the first 10 minutes I did not FEEL hot, but the sweat rolling down my face told a different story. Often when I do cardio I am thirsty, but I did not feel thirsty during this practice. It helped to be in a group of novices. I think I might be intimidated in a regular class. Overall, I didn't dislike it and I think I could grow to like it. read more

Joining this yoga studio has been life changing. My boyfriend and I enjoy seeing these people every time we go to class. They have all the knowledge necessary to conduct a phenomenal class. They treat us like family each time we walk through their doors. They work with you at your own level and encourage you to be better. Sumits yoga has been life changing for the both of us. We seriously don't know how we lived without it before. We tried Bikrim yoga and we just were not happy with what we we're getting. It seemed very military where as Sumits is calming and relaxing. They also play great music during the class. It's an amazing workout and an incredible sweat. If you are willing to sweat and workout then you have to try this place out. Sumits Yoga had me sweating to say the least! I am absolutely in LOVEEEEE with this place. I left there feeling refreshed and five pounds lighter. There is something about this place that connected my mind and body more than any other yoga studio i have ever been to. They increase your heart rate to a point where you are getting an extremely good workout... but they give just enough breaks to allow you to catch your breath. They are completely aware of beginners in the studio, and let you form your own flow or yoga versus pushing you to be like everyone else. Five starts to this place- I immediately signed up for the two week trial after my first experience. It is hard, you sweat a lot, and everyday I can't wait to go back. I've since been back to enjoy Wednesday's community classes ($7) and was reminded why I love this studio. Congrats to Kayla who now is instructing classes regularly. Excellent flow- if you're feeling great, you can really bust it out; if you're a little sluggish, Amy offers modifications and breathing tips to make it through.
