The gentleman who owns it bills himself as grouchy and surly, but we weren't fooled. He's clearly passionate about his business, his cat, and his coffee, including commissioning his own personal blend from a local roaster. Our lattes were smooth and delicious (almond and oat milk). Although pricing is pretty reasonable, especially for the Keys, I do wish they didn't charge extra for plant based milks. WIFI is available with a $5 purchase, and there is a variety of books to browse and/or buy while enjoying a coffee or pastry.

The selection of books is plentiful, ranging from self help, romance, children's & cookbooks. The gentleman at the front is friendly and knowledgeable. The best part of this bookstore is not just the price of the books but the children's area. It is in the back of the bookstore, and it is like entering a surreal world, filled with books, arts & crafts, plush animals, a comfy couch & the walls are decorated with children's artwork. Personally, as an adult it was amazing to experience so I can only imagine what it is like for a child. I tell everyone about this bookstore and am excited to go back!

You walk through an outdoor entrance with black iron gates and the first thing you see at this bookstore is a bar! Ha. They have a cute outdoor patio seating area where you can eat, drink and read a book. There is an indoor cafe space and seating area as well. There are literally books EVERYWHERE!!! On the left side is an entrance to one side of the bookstore and on the right side is another entrance to the other side of the bookstore. Super organized with tall shelves of books, books and more books!!! f you walk past the bar outside and pass the outdoor patio area, there is another entrance in the middle to the indoor cafe with more seating. The indoor cafe entrance also connects to the bookstore inside too. We stopped by here during the day when we were walking around Coral Gables grabbing lunch and checking out the local museums. But we didn't have time to browse so we came back at night after dinner. At night, there's a bar/lounge vibe which is cool. They also had live music when we were there on a Saturday night. Beautiful bookstore set up and organization. They sell cute gift items too and the kids section is great! The open courtyard at the entrance has a bar offering light lobster options and wine. The floor plan has a winding maze-like layout making your browsing experience much more interesting. They also host book signing events with local authors so checking their social media pages is a good way to sneak peak what's in store. Mitchell Kaplan founded Books & Books in 1982 in a 500 sq ft space in Coral Gables when he realized that he loved books more than going to law school. Somehow this independent book seller has managed to stay in business in a time when most books are bought online. One of the ways they have stayed relevant is by hosting over 60 author events every month. Books & Books sponsors one of my favorite events every November, the Miami Book Fair, when 300 hundred authors converge on the Wolfson Campus of Miami Dade College for a week of one of a kind literary events. The fair was started in 1984 by Miami-Dade College Wolfson Campus President, Eduardo J. Padrón and Mitchell Kaplan in partnership with the Miami library system. Many famous people, artists, athletes, politicians, and celebrities have come to Miami to speak about their books at the fair. It is now the largest literary festival in the country. I discovered this small Books & Books outpost while exploring Bal Harbour Shops. It might be one of the only stores I can afford in the entire mall. As soon as you walk in the heavenly smell of books engulfs you. I wish they sold it is a perfume. On the wall and tables are a good selection of the latest best sellers, popular fiction, children's book, and non fiction. They also sell reading glasses. In a time when most books stores have been shuttered, it is wonderful to see that Books & Books has managed to keep the literary loving community engaged.
