It took me so time for me not to be worried about my parents well-being in their new surroundings. It soon was apparent that they were well taken care of, most of the time they were busy playing Bingo or listening to live music or just interacting with the staff and other residents. I love Brandywine Senior living the facility has put to rest any fear I had relative to my parent care. I can only say if you have a elderly relative who could use a Assisted Living facility, please check out Brandywine Senior living at Fenwick Island. Beautiful facility, beautiful people, wonderful environment. I give them 5 *****, more if I could.

She's treated wonderfully by everyone, especially her caregiver, Kison. Also, Chris, Bethany, and Jamie are employees in her unit and they are upbeat and cheerful. All of the employees seem to know all of the residents' names, and that's pretty impressive. I'm so happy to have found this great facility, and it's only two miles from where she lived before she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. There are so many activities scheduled, she is never bored. I did visit and research other places before deciding on Brandywine, and I'm very happy I made the choice I did. She is also happy there, and I love seeing her happy when I visit. Family activities are scheduled regularly, and the dining room facility is basically a restaurant with a menu...families are welcome to join residents for a meal, and we have done that often. Do yourself a favor and visit Brandywine if you have the need for assisted living.

My husband and I found a new home for my mother-in-law Candy at Brandywine in Rehoboth Beach in…read more2011, three years after she moved in with us. At age 87 her progressive dementia was making it unsafe for her to remain at home, especially since we were still working out of state several days/week. In-home care was no longer viable, and we made the difficult decision to find her professional residential care. From our first meeting, Executive Director Donna Winegar and Director of Community Relations Heidi McNeely were supportive and helpful in assessing Candy's needs and explaining how Brandywine could meet them. They provided information about her care, advice about long term financial payment and assured us that every caregiver would keep Candy safe and care for her physical and emotional needs. We found over time that residents were not left in their rooms on their own. In the Reflections Memory Care Unit residents are in the main living areas for a variety of stimulating activities, crafts, parties, musical presentations, dance parties and holiday celebrations. Reshell Bridell, INVEST Coordinator expertly planned these events and assured all residents and their families had the opportunity to attend and be involved. Over the years we enjoyed many holiday meals with Candy in the beautiful dining room. Candy loved it all, had many friends among the residents and staff, and seemed very happy. Towards the end of her life we were not sure if she knew who we were, but it did not matter because she was smiling most of the time. Our weekly visits with her were truly quality time, and the decision to place her at Brandywine was absolutely the right one for our family. Candy peacefully passed away at Brandywine last week at the age of 95 after eight years of being lovingly cared for by the wonderful staff there. Her dementia became severe over time. The aides, nurses and activities staff were so tolerant of the sometimes agitated and obstinate behavior that people with progressive dementia exhibit (aide Katie Bell was especially good at this!). The staff were trained to handle these situations with respect and dignity. My husband and I visited at different times of the day, observed many staff interactions, and found consistent professional behavior every time we visited. The Brandywine staff became like family to us. On Candy's last evening her nurse Bud Morgan was incredibly supportive and attentive to her and us as she passed. We will never forget his kindness that evening and the wonderful and loving care we witnessed for all eight years at Brandywine.

That said, they often had NO ONE at the front desk and the main floor had many open doors. Did anyone care that folks with declining mental capacity would just walk out the door? Not really...I was amazed at the lack of "oversight" even though they knew better. Yes, they will say "We are not a memory care facility.." Genesis has a skilled nursing facility next door...which was a HORROR SHOW. We departed the following day to Brookdale in Court House - an incredibly better facility.

All those departments needed a definite upgrade of people with intellectual fortitude. I hope they finally have intelligent people running their activities department. I also hope that they finally have someone who deals with the various types of dementia that face most elderly people but many young and middle aged people as well. My Mother had vascular dementia and due to the fact that I have a degree with the proper training in the field of all aspects of dementia, I was able to assist her in slowing down the progression of the disease and helping her to improve her mind and body. The former so-called activities director had no clue how to deal with someone with any form of dementia, let alone someone without. I also have a degree in recreational management for people without dementia. Hopefully, in that department they have all new educated people. When I was there, my Mother and I both made sure that everyone treated my Mother with the utmost dignity and respect. The one that did not was severally reprimanded by myself and the previous administrator, before the idiot administrator was there, and fired. Eli S
