My husband and I LOVE Sandy Hook and have wanted to try stand up paddle boarding for some time. So we decided to make reservations the night before a beach trip and give these guys a shot. What a great decision! Before we even left for the beach we called SHK and they told us the conditions were a bit too windy for paddle boarding. He advised us to check the Sandy Hook wind forecast before our next trip and suggested wind under 7mph is ideal. So a few days later we tried again. Upon arrival we were greeted by one of the guys who works there. He told us a bit about how the weather affects your time on the water. Then he got our boards ready and explained where we could go. We had a blast but it was one heck of a workout. Midway through our first trip I exchanged my board out for a more stable (larger) one. What a difference! The 1 hour rental is enough time to explore the area and not feel completely beat. We loved our experience so much we went back 2 more times. read more

The boundary was fairly small (for 2 adventurous adults,) which I completely understand for safety precautions. I contacted Sandy Hook Kayaks today at 2:30pm in the afternoon via the website live chat and received a response within minutes from Brandon. I wanted to take a kayaking lesson and asked if he had any availability for the afternoon. 30 minutes later, I was at the beach and putting on my life vest. Brandon did a fantastic job explaining how to kayak and went out with me on the water for an hour. He even took action shots of me on the water and sent them to me later. Really top notch operation. I spoke to Brandon originally, who literally picked me up at the Sandy Hook ferry dock upon my arrival from Midtown Manhattan on Seastreak (and after I was finished kayaking, he dropped me off at a nearby beach about a mile away). Now that's what I call service! Within 15 minutes tops, the paperwork was processed and I was paddling my kayak! I opted for one hour ($20). Equipment is in great shape, the area is very pretty, and while I was paddling, Brandon's brother Kevin was on a paddle board and passed by me to make sure I was okay! You're definitely in good hands with these guys and the day was 'smooth sailing' (pun intended, albeit a bad one). As an added bonus, I even got to meet their mother that day! I would highly recommend Sandy Hook Kayaks. It's a nice respite from the dog days of summer, especially if you live in the confines of the concrete jungle and are looking for a nice escape out of the city. This is a very scenic kayaking location, on the "bay" side of Sandy Hook, opposite Parking Lot C. The boat traffic is mostly along the opposite end of the bay, so not a lot of wake to contend with. The crew here are helpful and friendly. Prices are reasonable. Online reservations with credit card payment are the way to go, and you can even sign your paperwork online, so you don't have to do that there. Wow this place is great. The owner Kevin is a standup guy. (No pun intended.) He helped my 2 clumsy nephews Gino and Francis get up on the paddle board after their 2nd try at it. Price is right too. Definitly recommend for some good old fashioned family fun. read more
