If you aren't taking your dog to the Sandy Paw Pet Spa then he/she probably doesn't like you very much. Seriously, your pet is probably giving you stank eye as you read this. This place is a hidden gem tucked away in Winthrop. The owner is quite possibly the sweetest lady I have ever met. Like her, the staff are all very friendly and caring. I really dislike dropping my dog off and leaving him somewhere, but I was at ease here because I can tell the staff genuinely love animals. I've taken my dog here several times, but one experience that truly stands out is this: One time I called in the late afternoon on a Sunday to see if they had any appointments available that day. It was very last minute. I had an impromptu trip coming up on Monday and was taking my dog with me. The owner told me to bring him right over. She took me as a walk in and stayed past closing just to get him washed, trimmed, and groomed. It was so nice of her and I was extremely grateful. We love Sandy Paws! Our Bogey goes occasionally for drop in play time, gets groomed by Brenda (who is awesome! Great doodle cutter!!) and of course we buy food and treats. One stop shopping right down the street. Love it! read more

I was treated HORRIBLY today at this establishment. I have a cat with double claws and web claws and I've taken him up to this place many times with awesome results. The groomers in the past were compassionate and experienced and knew to put a little cap on his head so he wasn't scared. He is a street rescue cat from LA and gets freaked out easily. In the past they were ALWAYS kind, EVEN DURING COVID. I'd hold him and they'd cut. It took three seconds. Today, a little teen girl tried to sweep him away from me to the back, didn't listen to me, screamed that she was a professional, COVID, etc., scooped him up and slammed the back door, saying I wasn't allowed to help, like I have before, even during Covid. Predictably, she got mauled, as well she should have. She is not experienced, not compassionate, and cruel. The owner didn't do anything to help the situation. They are crass, mean, hateful, and refused the service. I will never visit the establishment again. These people are hacks and hags. Clearly hate cats too. I don't know where the nice people went, but OMG. AWFUL. The worst. Hire adults please. Or refuse to help cats. Learn from your past groomers who probably quit because you suck. read more

Besides being the most wonderful people in the world, Sandy Paw offers great pet toys, treats and premium food. I used to own a Long Coated Rottweiler a grooming nightmare! Even though a very sweet boy a lot of groomers were afraid of him. Not at Sandy Paw! They did a fantastic job and he loved them. A year after he passed, I went in to buy X-mas presents for my canine friends and totally broke down sobbing as the memories were still fresh. The staff were amazing and a woman said "Cyrus would want you to help another rescue". She was right! A week later I picked up a senior, female pitmix princess hours away from euthanasia. Brought my shih tzu in to be groomed, advised not to cut eyelashes, short kennel cut, round head, and clean up face. (no mustach)Along with all the normal toy breed extras (ears,glands) picked her up and was charged $55 and while she looked good, nothing was really done. (I even gave them a photo). I called later to see what we could work out and as my dogs visor, and hair in less than a week is covering her eyes again! (because she was washed and brushed only) I was happy when I heard ok bring her down (the following day) but call first. Happy that they would work her in I called as told the next day. At that time I was told I got what I asked for and would have to pay for her apt again. Stunned I asked if she went to the hair salon and was uphappy or needed additional services due to a screw up would she Pay again!? She yelled through the phone that I got exactly what I asked for, and they do not work for free. (well great neither do I!)I told her I would pay but would not be coming back. I asked if she was the owner (of course not) she reluctantly gave me the owners name. Rude, and unwilling to help (us) a new client, she hung up on me. Seriously? Wow I won't even dignify that with a response! I would not recommend bringing your business to this location. At the very least she could have been empathetic to her "new" clients needs to earn future business. Networking is huge in this area and manners are not a privilege!! These folks just want to take your money, and have proven to be rude, and extremely unreasonable. Sad really especially in these times. Stick with BYOD in Southie! I'm very concerned about the day care services of Sandy Paw. I just recently started taking my dog there, and I was told that I could not see the day care room, because there was an excitable dog in the room. Later in the day, I went back to pick up my dog and asked again to see the room. This time, I was shown a few cell phone shots of the room on a staff member's phone, but still wasn't allowed to personally go in. That was a bit of a red flag for me. My mother then dropped off my dog again a few days later, and mentioned to me that my dog had been a bit nervous, so my mother offered to walk the dog into the play room herself, and the staff shot her down, and would not let her enter. She voiced her concern to me that she thought that was odd for any kind of daycare establishment - dog or otherwise. I hadn't mentioned my concern to my mother, so her's is a second independent point of view. The excuses/reasons seem to change every time, but I will not be going back until this policy is dropped. I highly recommend that anyone else who takes their dog here for daycare demand to view the facilities before going again. I have no idea what the problem is, but I can't help but think that there is something that they don't want their customers to see. This is a two-star review instead of one due to the otherwise friendly staff, and the good range of toys and gourmet pet treats. The part of the store that I could see reminded me a bit of Polka Dog in the south end. read more

i wandered into Sandy Paw on my walk with my dog. I needed treats, and this place was delightful. It had great dog toys, good quality food and treats. The woman who waited on me was helpful and pleasant making for a nice, welcoming, shopping experience. When I am in Winthrop, I will shop there again. read more

I've had numerous dogs over the years and always managed to bathe them in my own tub. However, I just got a large furry dog in need of a bath and realized I needed outside help. Sandy Paws provides a do it yourself set up with walk in tubs. aprons, shampoos, scrubbers, dryers, etc. So today I took advantage of this and tried it out as a walk-in customer. They also have full service grooming but I couldn't wait for an appointment--my dog needed a bath. It was a wonderful experience! The staff was very helpful in setting us up and it was so much better than messing up my bathroom. And the tubs are stand-up height--good for the back. I will definitely be a repeat customer. They also carry a good offering of pet supplies/foods and are helpful in recommendations. Prices are very reasonable. I've shopped in the brick and mortars and on line so I can tell you they are competitive. read more

If I was a dog, I would be barking and wagging my tail at my owner to take me here! King of the grooming throne! That is how I would feel. You can take your pet, Saint Bernard size if you wish, and bath with him or her the tubs are that large. They have special shampoo that smells better than mine! Fluffy towels, conditioner, hairdryers and cool brushes. Of course, if you would prefer a drop off appointment, they offer a long list of grooming services so you can drop your favorite off, and go across the street for a cup of cappuccino or just roam around town. Did I mention the tasty treats. I personally have tasted many of the treats I purchase for our dog. The yogurt balls are delicious - Baxter loves the chicken nibblers and the peanut butter cookies. me and my husband like to come in here and get stuff for our cats. They do not have a huge selection of stuff but everything in the store is super cute, reasonably priced and everyone on staff answers all your questions and if they do not have something they will order it for you or will tell you where you can find it. read more

We have been bringing our dog here forever, well at least since they have been open! The owner is the nicest person you will ever meet and the staff is super caring and friendly. This place caters to your pet and they have a cute stuff to buy as well. Reasonably priced and will keep going back here. read more

This place looks promising but the lady assisting us was just flat out rude. She started off by insulting the dog I brought in calling him fat and pathetic then tried helping us by cleaning his face and she ended up being so rough with him that she made him bleed below his eye. Also if your a guy, forget about it. Plain and simple she hates guys. It's pretty amusing actually. This place is nice and all but unfortunately and unhappy employee ruined my experience and I will NOT be a returning customer. read more

My mother just brought my golden retriever back from the sandy paw and I am absolutely mortified. This is the absolute worst cut I have ever seen on a dog. I have actually never seen a golden with it's hair cut this way. We had brought her to the sandy paw before and were happy with the results, (they had left her feathers and just trimmed her coat) so we thought that we could bring her back and expect the same results. My poor dog now has a basically shaven body (which was clearly cut unevenly) and the fur around her tail and bum was all taken off, so her tail now makes her look like she is a squirrel that got an electric shock. I literally cried when my mom brought her home and I am pretty sure my mom was crying too. I literally CANNOT WAIT until her coat grows back. I love Sandy Paws and my dogs absolutely love it there too! Friendly employees who know my name and my dogs names. They have gotten groomed there and occasionally go to daycare. I also buy their dog food there. I saw the negative review about not being able to see the daycare area and that should be a common procedure at all dog daycares! The dogs get all worked up when they see people so that is best for the other dogs safety and your safety to not be allowed down there! Keep up the good work Sandy Paws staff!!! read more
