Quaint little shop in downtown. Parking was easy on a wet and windy Friday morning. I liked all the little details in the shop and the chairs were comfy. Mike was just finishing up with another gentleman, though he said he'd get to me shortly. When I sat down, he was very courteous and professional, got me all set and then asked how I needed my hair cut. I told him I needed short on the sides and be gentle on top because I'm thinning. He asked if I had an appointment, because he does those in the morning and walk ins in the afternoon and I was very apologetic, I didn't know, and he said not a problem, I'm sure we'll get you taken care of before the next appointment arrives. We spent the time talking about my corvette and his brother's hot rods and just car talk in general. He was done before I knew it and it looked great. When I tipped him for being so understanding and so professional, he looked me in the eye and shook my hand and asked me my name. Mike's a great guy and gives a great haircut and I'll make the drive back to the island the next time I need to get "street legal." Keep up the great work. Thanks. read more

Since moving here 15 years ago, Mike has been my only barber--well, his brother was helping him out and cut my hair once. Sandy passed a couple years ago now but I still love hearing people refer to Mike as Sandy. He won't correct you. The shop has a beautiful new window and the door is getting painted soon. The owner of the business is Mike and not Sandy so if you don't hear Sandy when you call, do not be disappointed, Mike is great and doesn't disappoint, unless you're unfortunate enough to not make a morning reservation and therefore have to chance a walk-in, in the afternoon. What I love about Mike is that he listens to what you want and doesn't just give you what he thinks you need, an unusual trait with many barbers who fancy themselves artists and you, their palette. Mike is always good for an interesting conversation and not just about himself but also interested in learning about you. This small, two-chair barbershop on Winslow Way in downtown Bainbridge Island is the real deal. Mike, the current owner is hospitable as well as entertaining. Whether he is giving tips on good fishing and crabbing spots or sharing a bit of humorous, local history, you're bound to enjoy waiting for your haircut. There's always a room full of local regulars waiting. So, there's frequently an opportunity to catch-up on local "news". It's getting pretty rare to find a barber that still uses a straight razor. So, I'm grateful to have someplace I can still get the same kind of a haircut the men in my family have gotten for the last five generations. That means I'll need to fly home every two months or so to get my haircut - I fell that strongly. After months of working from home, I got a surprise from my boss. I needed to start coming back to office a few days a week. The scruffy look that had been fine for Zoom wouldn't work so I dropped by Sandy's and got in right away. I told Mike just to clean it up and keep some length on the top. He took us from there and gave me a great cut. I'm not much of a talker, but he kept it lively and the time flew by. Classic barber shop. I've been twice and has earned my business as my go to barber. Quick, friendly, price is right, and finishes with a straight razor. About me, my preference is a high and tight , 1 on the sides, blend in the sides with scissors. From what I've seen, he's skilled with both clippers and scissors. One happy customer. read more

This is, by far, the worst barber shop that I've ever had my cut in. I went there because of the reviews here, and even though my intuition was telling me to leave I stayed just because I wanted to give Mike the benefit of the doubt. He failed miserably. My hair looks like it was chewed up by a camel. It's so bad that I'm going to have to wear a hat for at least 2-3 weeks before I have enough hair in certain massacred spots that a follow up haircut can repair. Other problems I saw at the shop was that it was quite dirty and neglected. Mike does not sweep between cuts, either. There's filth and grime everywhere. Honestly, now after the experience I wonder at myself for having stayed. It's my fault I went for it, but that doesn't mean that I am not going to expose this absolute amateur at cutting hair for who he is. I am rather certain that I would have been able to give myself a better haircut if I cut my hair in front of the mirror after smoking a joint and having a few glasses of wine. So, moral of the story, don't trust all reviews you read on Yelp, including my own. Don't believe me? Go get a cut with Mike and let me know how you like it. It's pretty obvious now that the four positive reviews (only four reviews in 4 years) are by people who have a connection to the owner and were put in probably as a personal favor. My recommendation?
