With the absolute sludge that has been forced upon us by corporate mergers and acquisitions plus…read moreprivate equity absolutely flattening every single experience across the board via "per my last email put a pin in it circle back to upward mobility" corp speak aristocracy it is SO unbelievably refreshing to walk into Borrmann's Steel and experience a place with real, genuine character and history as well as an hilarious crew of old heads who obviously know how to work hard, but can also have a good time. I instantly connected with all of the staff. I am new to welding, but long time in various different trades ( mechanic, short stint as an electrician, lots of on the side hobby stuff too ) and went to Borrmann's in search of a steel plate cut off to build my first welding table. I decided to go full bore with a buy once cry once mentality, but I also had to be realistic with my current budget. I found a 30x48x1/2" steel plate cut off that was perfect. They cut me a fantastic deal, loaded it up, and I was on my way. I got the plate home and placed it on my temu pot metal fixture table which inspired me to build this new table in the first place as it bends and flexes like crazy. I set it up, super stoked, so happy, but then realized it had quite a bend in it. Turns out it was cut using a press brake and it put a pretty significant bend in it. What a bummer! I called Borrmann saying, "I don't know if you remember me, but I swung by this weekend grabbin a 30x48x1/2" plate and its a bit bent." The guy on the phone said, "How could we POSSIBLY for get you! Swing on by with the piece and we will check it out." I was having a bad day and I laughed SO hard and really needed that. You just don't get this kinda customer service anymore. I really appreciated it. Admittedly, I was slightly annoyed I had to reload it ( 210lbs of steel + a few knocks on neighbors doors ), but the office staff and I were belly laughing the first time we interacted. It literally felt like a bunch of friends hanging out just swappin' stories of being young and dumb and I decided, "Sure. Lets see what happens" and loaded the plate and headed over. I show up with the plate, get in the office and they immediately begin smiling and welcoming me back. They tell me to have one of the staff look at it and if its bent to "burn me a new piece." I am new to all this so I had no idea what that meant. The staff member looked at it and confirmed it was the press brake that likely caused the issue. The staff then proceeded to grab a BRAND NEW STEEL PLATE and cut it with Oxy-Ace ( "burn it" ) loaded it up and sent me on my way. I am sure this is not common practice and probably not something they do often, but a gesture of kindness due to my enthusiastic newbie excitement I was beaming and the "back in my day" rapport we shared. This is the kind of thing that makes me as a customer decide to chew a few dollars on materials even if the local corporate metal supplier is cheaper. They had every right to say, "it is a cut off and this is what ya get. All sales final. Sorry." but instead they made things right for me. I forgot what integrity was like. Sad to see the for sale sign on the building, but this is unfortunately the way of the world with my aforementioned distain for corporate America flatlining the character of long time family owned businesses across all industries. As long as Borrmann's retains the same hand shake integrity that I experienced yesterday, they have a customer for life.
