We recently had our baby boy with the midwives at the santa barbara birth center in August of 2013 and couldn't have been happier with our experience. Having a natural pregnancy and an unmedicated birth was important to us and we were able to experience this at the SBBC. Giving birth at the birth center felt like a home away from home and it will forever have a special place in our hearts. We are so thankful to the midwives for helping us have such a beautiful birthing experience!

I moved from the hospital to the midwives when I was 29 weeks pregnant and I instantly felt a shift in my care. It was so nice to meet with the midwives and talk about what was going on with my pregnancy and in my life. I never felt rushed out of the birth center and I always had all of my questions answered. The environment was calm and relaxed when I was in labor. There were only a few people in and out of my room, all of which I knew very well. My husband and I were both so happy that we made the decision to move my care to the birth center. I couldn't have imagined a better birth story!

She advocates for what her clients want and helps them advocate for themselves as well. The specialist she recommends really know their stuff (chiropractic care, breech specialists, and ultrasounds to name a few). I could not have chosen a better practitioner/midwife to be under the care of. So grateful she's part of my birth team. Her weekly prenatal group zoom calls have been supremely helpful during this difficult time. They've brought a sense of community I felt like I was missing during this pandemic. Knowing that others are going through the same things is so so helpful during this time. I love cheering on fellow members as they get closer to meeting their babies and cheering on the newly pregnant people as well! And her Innate Journey class with Haize Hawke was the cherry on top! So informative, so realistic and caring. Precautions were taken to keep everyone safe during class, while bringing us together as a small group of couples getting ready to meet our babies. We touched on the spiritual and the practical. I've never felt closer to my spouse than after we finished the last class. Haize and Blyss are an absolute dream team!

Every prenatal appointment I felt seen, heard, and cared for in such a deep way. Blyss went above and beyond to check in with me during the ongoing pandemic/covid-19 and during the black lives matter movement. Blyss even created a weekly zoom group for her clients to hold space for us to breath and also connect and ask questions. I was bless to have a homebirth at 41 Weeks with Blyss and she was so professional and caring. Her calming presence and years of experience illuminated during my labor. I trusted her and she constantly reminded me that I can do it. Blyss is passionate about being a midwife, its not a job for her, you can see it's her spiritual calling.

They are kind, knowledgeable, and supportive, but the front office and administrative side has been consistently frustrating. The administrative staff is disorganized and unprofessional. They frequently mix up appointment times, give conflicting information, and make even simple tasks feel unnecessarily difficult. They don't use email or an online portal to send updates, test results, or appointment confirmations, which makes it almost impossible to keep track of anything. Everything has to be done by phone, and the communication is often curt or dismissive. Another major frustration is that any time I need bloodwork, I have to schedule a completely separate appointment with a third-party lab instead of being able to do it in-office. This makes routine prenatal care far more inconvenient than it needs to be. I really wanted to have a good experience here, especially since the clinical care from the midwives has been positive, but the front-office management has caused so much stress and confusion that I'm choosing to switch practices. I hope they improve their administrative processes and communication in the future.

As I mentioned, this was my 3rd homebirth-- which means I had 2 other children to think about during this past pregnancy and lugging them around to prenatal appointments was not on my wish list. That was one reason Rachel was our *perfect* midwife. She not only delivered our baby in our home but all of my prenatals and blood work were done in my home too!! It was so incredibly convenient and my husband loved that we could schedule them on the weekend so that he didn't have to miss anything. Now, more about Rachel.... Rachel has such a calm, sweet energy. She is probably one of the most patient and soft spoken people I have ever met! At every appointment I really felt listened to and she took the time to answer all of my questions. When it came time to actually deliver our little girl, Rachel had given us the birth pool a couple weeks prior so, my husband set it up in our bedroom. Rachel and her assistant arrived promptly after an hour or so of texting her about the length and frequency of my contractions. My daughter was born about 45 minutes or so after Rachel arrived. It was such a relaxing (yes relaxing!), laid back, and beautiful experience. There's something about floating in a birthing pool that makes it incredibly less intense. - I felt my water break while I was in the pool (Rachel by my side outside the pool), and then I felt the urge to push and my daughter came right out. Rachel put a towel on her as I pulled her up to my chest. It was so quick and calm. Then we moved to the bed and Rachel and her assistant cleaned up everything and made us as comfortable as could be. After the birth all the postpartum visits were at my house too! Which was amaaazing because who wants to take their newborn out for check ups those first few weeks?! Hands down it was the BEST home birthing experience I've had and we will definitely be hiring her when we're expecting again. ((Just submitted the claim to my insurance and will update about that when we have an answer.))

Fast forward to me getting pregnant and Google-ing "midwives near me" and seeing Simple Midwifery on a Yelp list. I checked out Rachel's website and talked to my husband about meeting with her. We set up an interview/meeting and after meeting with her (our first and only midwife interview) decided on our way home that she was definitely the one we wanted. The midwifery model of care is just so much more preferable to me and it was really awesome to be able to hear my baby's heartbeat for the first time in my own home with my husband. All of our prenatal appointments were at home, and any lab work that she couldn't do herself, I'd go to PAL and get it taken care of. She was so helpful and knowledgeable and anything she didnt know she would research and get back to us at/before our next appointment. I always felt like Rachel genuinely cared about us and our baby and my health. Our birth was everything I wanted as well. She was involved when necessary but hands off and let me do what I needed to do without being overbearing. I ended up having a small issue after the birth and she went with us to the hospital for several hours after she had been up for 2 days with just a little nap in between. She was amazing and we hope she will still be in town when we give our son some siblings!

Though initially going for a Hospital Birth since I was 43 I was immediately put in the 'High Risk' category and all the shenanigans that come with that. So, at the encouragement of a friend of ours (Natural Birth Instructor) and with my husband fully on board, we decided to take control and started interviewing Birth Centers and Midwives. What attracted us to LA Midwife Collective was that we were getting 2 licensed midwives with years of experience. The moment we met Monica and later Jennifer, we were drawn to their professionalism, knowledge, and comforting approach. They made us feel so comfortable and empowered that we knew were in capable hands for the birth of our daughter. I loved that each visit was not rushed and not just about our baby but me...what was I eating? How was I feeling? Emotionally, physically? Exercises to do and foods to add. When decisions had to be made, they made sure we had all the information needed (pros/cons) so we could make an informed decision. Jennifer & Monica quickly went from strangers to family. The birth of our baby couldn't have gone better. Though Jennifer was off that weekend our doula, Johanna who also was their birth assistant, helped with the delivery of our baby. There were moments during the pushing stage where I started to panic and doubt myself, but Monica was right there saying exactly what I needed to hear. And after the birth as my husband and I were getting acquainted with our daughter Monica was in our kitchen making us something to eat. The care didn't end at the birth when issues came up with breastfeeding Monica was extremely quick to respond to our concerns. We loved the visits made to our home 1 day and 1 week after along with the office visit at week 3 and 6. The level of care we experienced exceeded anything we could have imagined. After this experience I now believe that regardless of one's birth plan every woman should have access to this type midwifery care.

I would look forward to my appointments with Megan so much. My kids always loved going to see Megan too, they never wanted to leave the office. At a typical appointment you have all the normal listening to the heartbeat, blood pressure etc. but she also spends ample time getting to know you, what you're dealing with in life and what kind of birth you're hoping to have so she can best support you emotionally and physically. My second two boys were born happy, healthy and at home with Megan there to support. I was in my 2nd trimester with my 3rd child when my husband was laid off and forced to find a new job. Fortunately and unfortunately he was able to find a new job very quickly but it was in northern CA. So for the last 4.5 months of my pregnancy my husband was 4 hours away all week and he'd drive home on weekends. When I went into labor it went FAST. I was planning on cleaning, setting up my pullout bed with sheets and filling the tub by myself but by the time I told Megan to come, I wasn't able to move anymore between contractions. Megan picked up right where I left off and quickly got things in order. My sweet husband and my mom were unable to make it to the house before baby came out. So it was just me, Megan and Mary her apprentice. Even though my family couldn't make it, these women showered me with love and support and I was able to focus all of my energy on having my baby. So grateful she is doing what she's doing!
