For a long time I wrestled with posting a poor review for a small local business. But, every time I saw an ad for SB Mattress's own manufactured mattresses, it made me very uncomfortable knowing that I hadn't spoken up and potentially spared someone from having to go through what I did. Here's my story: I purchased a queen mattress and box spring from SB Mattress's own line. My first time sleeping on it, I knew immediately the mattress was defective, but I thought maybe I just needed to get used to it. I didn't. The mattress was visibly caving in the middle, the edges were noticeably higher and abnormally soft (I could not sit on the bed without slipping off). After several months, and a lot of back pain and stiffness, I called and told them about the problem. A worker did come shortly after and inspected the mattress and agreed it was defective. He took the mattress and within a week it was returned and supposedly fixed. It wasn't. Again, the same defective issues surfaced again - sagging middle, poorly constructed edges and dips throughout. I called and again they sent out the same worker, this time he said the mattress was in good condition. His boss, Spencer then told me that he wouldn't be fixing it and that if I wanted to replace my mattress he'd offer me 60% off a showroom model. I just gave up. Took me a while, but I saved up for a new mattress and my back and shoulders have never felt better. Bottom line. Their 15-year warranty is BS. My claim was deemed "invalid" so therefore wouldn't be covered under warranty. If you do buy one of SB Mattress' own manufactured mattresses, insist they guarantee that you will get your money back if you're not happy with it. It was my word against theirs, and I lost big time. read more

Prior to my visit, I researched other places and info on mattresses but to save someone time just come straight to Santa Barbara Mattress . That decision will save you time and headache. We have been shopping for an all natural, organic mattress for about a month... we looked at every option online we could find. Avocado, Awara, Amerisleep, Brentwood, 8sleep, Happsy, Joybed, Naturpedic, Saatva... my husband actually created a spreadsheet to track all of the features (softness ratings, warranties, prices, delivery promises, etc) of each brand. After all of that, we were so confused. We really just wanted to try some of them for ourselves. We decided to take a trip to Santa Monica to check out the Avocado showroom, (4 hours away), because it looked to us like the only place to try and buy a handmade, multi-layered mattress that didn't have harsh chemicals, solvents, or other harmful materials in it. On the trip down from San Luis Obispo, we decided to stop in at Santa Barbara Mattress Company because our doctor had mentioned that they had a number of healthy, high quality, hypo-allergenic and organic options that weren't listed specifically on their website or online. Boy are we glad we did. Not only were their Churchill and Smith beds ultra-comfortable, but the owner and mattress maker, Spencer, was there to tell us exactly how the beds are made, and what he puts in them... layer by layer! This was music to our ears, and after so much research, we were ready to try out the products. Santa Barbara Mattress Company carries some of the most expensive beds in the world, which were also great for us to be able to try, first-hand. Feeling what exactly the most wealthy clients in the world require in their mattresses was very eye opening. So very comfortable... they are truly like sleeping on a cloud. No pressure points anywhere, but supportive at the same time. But alas, we don't have $100k to spend, so we went around the showroom trying everything else to find the closest match for under $5k. We were able to contrast and compare their own brand of hand-made organic mattresses, and find a combination of mattress and topper that feels so similar to the expensive mattresses, I could hardly tell the difference! I went back and forth between the best $30k beds and the Churchill & Smith beds. By the time we had finished looking, we had no need to go to try the Avocado showroom... Shopping done much closer to home, and we couldn't be happier! Can't wait to get our new Churchill & Smith Natural Euro 4000 with 3500 pocket spring Euro coils. (Churchill and Smith is the brand owned by the people who own Santa Barbara Mattress Company). No harmful toxins, carcinogens, polyurethane foams, or VOC spray adhesives. Made the old fashioned way, using organic wool as the fire protectant, and now instead of using water based adhesives, they are going to use their new tufting machine on our bed so there will be no adhesives in our bed at all!!! (Molds love adhesives). With the topper we added, it feels like the most expensive bed in the showroom... a total body cradling experience for my arthritic back. There wasn't a lot of online info about this brand, which is why it caught us quite by surprise to find out about it by accident this way... by actually going into their brick and mortar store. Update: The biggest complaint about online Avocado Mattress Company has been that a customer pays thousands for a mattress, up front, only to wait 8, 10, 12 weeks for their bed to be made, when they were originally promised it would be only 4-5 weeks. Once they have paid, people report that there is no customer service number to call to check on your order to see where it went! Their excuses range from blaming it on covid, to blaming it on too much business, and too many orders to fill. When I found over 160 complaints filed against Avocado Mattress Company with the Better Business Bureau, I started wondering if all organic mattress manufacturers might have this problem. My silent fears were allayed when Spencer talked to my husband yesterday. Our custom made organic mattress was ready to ship... only 10 days after we visited the showroom!!! My husband reminded him that he hadn't even taken our money yet! Parker, who is the owner's son, and Selvin, their trusty long time delivery man, just delivered our brand new bed!!! These guys drove all the way from Ventura (about 2.5 hours away) to deliver it, and dispose of our old bed, for only $100! At every interaction Santa Barbara Mattress Company gets better and better! THE BED: I just tried out our new bed for the first time. Instead of sinking into and getting kind of stuck in the old memory foam we had, it feels more like a supportive pillow. All I can think is "so this is why the ultra rich people pay $100k for a bed..." and this guy, Spencer, has figured out how to make one and sell it for a fraction of the cost! It smells like fresh cotton with no other noticable odors. I love our new bed! read more

I spent close to 4,000 dollars on a bed purchase. Karen was friendly when i walked in but no real customer interest in serving her customers. She was great on receiving money but no call backs and appeared to be tired of what she does. I really wanted to support a long time Santa Barbara business but it would have been great to feel supported and appreciated for doing business with them. The bed is comfortable, but I would say overpriced. I don't think i would want to support them as a local business again or recommend them . read more

Its unfortunate to say that our transaction with this place was a a total waste of time. My wife and I came here looking for a new mattress for our toddler and at first we thought 'hey this should be simple enough,' a decent matress for a toddler. We arrived and weren't sure if this place was seperate from 'Hastens' next door. We found that its all really the same business (no wall inbetween) but the Hastens side has fancy modern decor for the showroom floor while Spencers is really just a room full of matresses. We looked around, decided on the mattress our daughter liked best, asked a few questions from the sales woman and after hearing her pitch on why those matresses are different and why they chose to carry only that brand, we paid and arranged for delivery. When it arrived we immediately noticed it looked totally different. Different colors, different logo, even the material and stitching were different. Ok, I figured the model was just slightly updated and after a phone call they assured us, yes it had just been updated but was the model we chose. Well we sat on it and my god it was stiff, springy and was missing the thick pillowtop. Changing stitching and colors is one thing, but comfort is something else. We went back to Spencers and they were closed. Outside was their warehouse worker sitting waiting for the owner to show up (the warehouse is across the street). We we waited with the warehouse guy for 30 minutes until the same saleswoman finally pulled up in her Mercedes. Finally we got a chance to explain, hey this is labled as the same matress but it feels nothing like the one here. She had the warehouse guy bring one over from stock to compare it with the floor model. At first (as expected) she tried to make excuses about how the floor model would obviously feel different from use, etc. What she wasnt expecting was a reminder about what she had just told us, if the company had changed a model, they would have been notified about the change and the floor model would have been swapped out accordingly. I pointed out, the different stitching, colors, lack of pillowtop padding and obviously different springs within. Shes was ready argue, and why didnt she? Because another woman had walked in to browse. She was clearly afraid of no longer being able to save face and being caught in a lie, let alone of having me explain the shighster bait and switch tactics they obviously knew about. Quickly she became apologetic and returned our money, and we were glad to leave. For such basic needs (a toddlers basic pillowtop mattress) some good old fashioned honesty, customer service (and the ability to open your shop on time), it was a ridiculous waste of time and the saleswoman and experience embody everything that makes mattress and used car sales some of the worst things to shop for. read more

We purchased two latex/rubber mattresses from Santa Barbara mattress about two years ago for our motorboat in the Santa Barbara harbor. We needed custom mattresses given the bed frames, one especially difficult to make because it is king-sized but the length had to be much shorter than a regular king because we had to accommodate the small room size. Cliff (I think that was the salesperson) came to our boat and measured the bedframes and then came again to make sure that the beds fit. They fit perfectly! Best of all, they are amazingly comfortable---they are dreamy to sleep on. I highly recommend that before you buy a mattress anywhere, do visit Santa Barbara mattress.
